Here's a little guy I might do a painting of.

So, I figured, let's go for it!
The demo started at 12:00 and there must have been about 25 people sitting around the easel in a half circle. There was a large screen which projected a detailed view of his process as he worked.
He started with a bright orange/red ground of acrylic on board. He said he never uses acrylic on canvas, only on board. He had a pile of brushes of every kind and said he uses whatever he needs at the time. His palette was clipped to board in a vertical manner and I can't believe I never thought of that. It's a great idea.
He made sure to divide the board into grids to insure a strong composition. I learned a lot just by watching this process. He used a paper towel to blend and smooth out the paint and started laying in the darks and then the lights.
He cross-hatched color over and over using a variety of every brush in an almost violent motion, with his whole arm, flicking paint. This part of the process looks awesome by itself!
He continued tightening up the painting.
He finished around 5:00PM. The photo I took of the final painting isn't great because there were people crowding to get a shot of it. He did a spectacular job. What a fantastic painter! And he gave the finished piece to the model!
Here are some notes I took, along with a sketch I made of the model. She did a fantastic job.
During one of the breaks I was chatting with Steven and I showed him this sketch I made of him painting. He said "Great drawing!" I think that comment made my year. HAHA! If you look at the bottom of the sketch you'll see some red paint. That's from shaking his hand. Maybe some of that talent will get transfered into me! LOL
A couple of weeks ago I was browsing my twitter feed and saw a post about a Very Merry Super Twitter Secret Santa Art Trade by Genevieve FT (@GenevieveFT on twitter). I thought it was a wonderful idea so I signed up. I was instantly intimidated by ALL of the amazing artists on the roster. I started sketching but wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I thought about Santa but decided on something more out-of-the-box. What better way to start than with robots!
My daughter is fascinated by little fury animals so that was next on the list. It was a cute idea but needed to be more interesting and fun. Then, I did a little drawing of this creature with a robotic arm. That set the stage for the final design, a cyborg fury creature robot! Or, as I like to call him, Santa's Little Helper.
I fleshed him out more and did some action poses.
I finally had my character and so began the evolution of the design. The initial design was nice but his legs looked like vacuum cleaners! I couldn't have that so I simplified them into cylinder shapes. I also changed the shoulders into a stronger, wider look. A quick color study set the mood but it needed more variations. Next, I did a clean-up drawing and transfered it to smooth press illustration board. The final painting is acrylic.
Ta Da! The painting was completed. As I was developing this little guy I thought it be great if he was animated. I can imagine him running, ducking, sliding, flying and striking poses, all with his big tail following behind him.
My Secret Santa buddy was an artist named Shaun Bryant. The guy is amazing. Check out is work if you get a chance.
Many thanks to Genevieve FT for suggesting a brilliant idea.
Merry Christmas!

I was saddened to learn about Maurice Sendak's passing. I still remember reading Where The Wild Things Are when I was a kid. I loved that book.
Here's my tribute to the man who made so many dreamers.

I've been looking at the drawings I did for last month's Inktober and my mind's been racing. I've been jotting down notes and doing some sketches that I think could be made into a short comic. The ideas are beginning to come together and this could be a neat story. Here is the first color version of concept art.
Here's a plein air painting I did around the corner from where I live. While I was painting this scene I could smell an amazing fragrance of flowers every time a cool breeze blew by. I think it was gardenia but I'm not sure.
I'm testing some new blog designs so be aware there might be changes now and then.

Thank you, Mel!! It's super sculpy and gold acrylic paint. It would be awesome if it was real gold! LOL! Or better yet, filled with chocolate.
