1. Will ‘Climb-It’ Climb the Shelves?

I don’t know about any of the rest of you bloggers out there, but I am an avid writer. I’m such an avid writer in fact, that that is the excuse I use as to why you readers out there do not see daily blog posts from me.

That being said, you readers out there might be interested to know that I just entered my first ever writing competition called the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest.  The topic?  Science Fiction!  That’s right, folks, I just wrote my first ever Science Fiction short story in the hopes that it will become awarded, published and recognized by at least some of the Sci-fi fans out there.

Now, for those of you who know me, you know that I’m not much of a Science Fiction buff (that’s Mom!)  The extent of my Science Fiction appreciation revolves around my contention that Doctor Spock has the cutest pointy ears on the planet.  But, I have never been one to go delerious over Deep Space 9 or to be starry eyed over Star Trek.  So, the writing took some doing.

Then, for those of you out there who are known to go gaga for Battlestar Galactica and DO know Science Fiction, you also know that it is a vast genre in which originality is of the utmost importance if one is to have any chance whatsoever of garnering any respectable level of fan appeal.

I certainly hope that I succeeded on some level even if I do not win…we’ll see what the judges think!

My Story Title and Synopsis:

Climb-It

A Science Fiction Genre short story revolving around an unforeseen natural disaster that leads to the climate of “Climb-It” (yes, Climb-It is a pun and play on the misspelling of the word climate as well as the name of the fictional community in my story) becoming angry at the residents living downward in the atmosphere and enacting its revenge in various fashions and in direct proportion to the particular weaknesses or superficialities of the particularly targeted resident.

Will “Climb-It” find the right climate of readers who will appreciate its modern take on an all-too-talked about future catastrophe?

I hope so!  And I’ll keep you posted!

2. LAYING DOWN THE LAW

After not having written for some time, I finally have some interesting (allbeit ironic) news to report.  If anyone out there has followed my very few other blog posts, you know that for two days, I discussed my passionate desire to be in graduate school for Screenwriting and Intellectual Property Law as well as my seemingly infinite and breathless waiting for an affirmative decision from UCLA on my second application go round.

While UCLA ultimately rejected me and was unwilling to set up any sort of fomal or informal meeting to discuss the reasons behind my rejection, it would seem that my long time friend/sort of family member Kristina Richards (who has apparently been leading a paprallel life to myself where goals are concerned) has been offered admission to the University of Iowa School of Law.   It seems that as my big sis, she will always be laying down the law while I might just be laying down :(   While I wish her a big congratulations, I wish that I was joining her :(   Congrats, Kris!

3. SOAKING SUMMER SUN

Summer is far from over here on the Central Coast and while I wait for the school daze to lift (nope, believe it or not, the daze still has not lifted and NO decision has been made by UCLA or UCSB–no surprise in this siesta bliss), I am “blistering in the sun” (Sorry Violent Femmes, I had to do it!) And actually, I think there was definitely something more violent about the sun than you guys, ’cause I really did come away with sun blisters!  Anyway, while I wait for the daze to lift I am writing, writing, writing, writing…and studying, studying, studying, studying!!  And all this for what?  Hopefully a “fire victim” benefit album and some hefty profits to launch my way to the next step in my professional life–REALLY fast writing (like for TV and movies and stuff!)  and REALLY being able to get the bad guys in trouble like the legal demon that I have always been at heart.  Will all of that come true in the stars or the end of summer sun?  Keep posted on my posts to find out as I do!

4. School Daze

Even though most people around me are thinking about what they are going to do for July 4th Weekend, I am in a daze.  About school days, that is.  None of you know yet, but I have been trying dilligently to get into UCLA for graduate school in Screenwriting and Entertainment Media Business Policy Law.  Sadly, though, I was rejected…hence, the daze.  So, today, I researched other programs both in and out of the United States.  With UCLA reconsider or will I be in an altered state about having to say good-bye to the States?  I’ll keep you posted!

5. Solstice Summed Up

With Summer solstice weekend behind me, I find like most of the rest of the world that it is time to return to my daily routine.  For me, that means that on this Monday morning, I awoke at between 6 and 7 a.m., had breakfast and began compiling a list of tasks that needed to be attended to most urgently.  And being homeless and job hunting that means that my current job is looking for a job.  For the first 3 days of this week, several area businesses and department stores are conducting interviews and according to my free, local rag mag, the nearby university is seeking to add some more intellectuals to its staff.  This opportunity might be ideal for a professional student such as myself– because after enduring merely one year of the blaring stereos, vibrating car radios, rambunctious shrieks, and the debilitating ulcers that will come from drowning in the bottomless pots of coffee that I will need to mitigate stressful migraines, I MIGHT be able to stash away enough cash to pay for 1 and a quarter to one and a half years of my graduate education at a same-system university one hour south of me here in SB!  Yay!  BEING in graduate school will mean that the REAL WORLD can ellude me for another 2 to 5 years and FINISHING graduate school promises that I can make $11,300 more than when I just had my B.A. (Source: WorldWideLearn.com).  Let’s pray that I really AM smart enough to be this university’s new friend!

6. June 24, 2011

Today is Friday–the start of Solstice Weekend in Santa Barbara.  Solstice is a BIG event here that attacts tourism from all over the countryand that shows off the City’s penchant for pageantry.  I have seen the Soltice Parade that is held here almost every year that I have been here and I always enjoy its liveliness tremendously.  This year I expect to be no different.

When the parade is over, I will relish my observations of the closing down chaos–confetti filled streets, the remnants of float bits on sunny concete, the organized bedlam of the crowd as people make their way past strangers to their next destnation, and the joy-filled faces of amatuer photographers who have somehow perfectly encapsulated shots of the area for posterity.

I hope your Summer Solstice weekend is as memorable as I expect that mine will be!
