My Review

Started and finished this book in a single day. I love when I get sucked into a book so quickly that I lose track of time! It has been awhile since I have really enjoyed reading and I am finding some awesome reads lately that are just sucking me straight in.
This was a suspense/mystery without much graphic so I consider it to be a fairly clean read. There was some moments but that was more than expected.
The story for me was quite unique having it be a private investigator rather than a police officer or another member of law being the one who is doing all the leg work and unraveling the mystery/story. I enjoyed the extreme use of humor in this book, it really made it feel like I was reading the thoughts of the narrator rather than just the actions, which was a lot of fun. I love that this story had me guessing as the pages turned. Definitely recommend it to anyone who is into crime novels!!

3. Roots of Indifference by Terri Ragsdale

Author: Terri Ragsdale
Paperback, 509 pages
Published December 1st 2009
By Booksurge Publishing
ISBN 1439203547
ISBN13: 9781439203545

Summary

WINNER OF THE PINNACLE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD IN LITERATURE HISTORY!

A suspenseful novel filled with unbridled passions, jealousy, incest, murder, witchcraft and dark superstitions. Roots of Indifference is interwoven with the story of a prestigious family during the early 1900s, struggling with racial intolerance as they try to carve a place for themselves in a hostile land during the Mexican Revolution, World War 1, and The Great Depression. This fascinating novel brings to light the horrendous injustices inflicted upon the Mexican-Americans, who suffered cruel indignities and discrimination. It is a story that needs to be told about the turbulent times during those dark years of indifference.

My Review

This book is LONG but well written and it contains a lot of history that we don’t often think much about any more which I personally enjoy. The author does a good job building characters. I think that this is a book for people of all ages and that it would be welcome reading for school projects or book reports. This is a story of injustice, racism, wartimes and everything else that was going on in the early 1900’s. I absolutely love reading fiction that is so well done that you believe it to have actually happened as written and that is what Terri Ragsdale does, she brings us to the past and lets us live through her characters so we can understand how bad things were. A MUST READ!

6. If I am Wrong, I don’t Want to Be Right

‘In one way or another, I’ve always suffered. I didn’t know why, exactly.
But I do know that I’m not so scared of suffering now.

I feeI more than I’ve ever felt, and I’ve found someone to feel with, to pIay with, to love, in a way that feels right for me.

I hope he knows that I can see that he suffers too, and that I want to love him.’

Each cut, each scar, each burn, a different mood or time.
I told him what the first one was.
I told him where the second one came from.
I remembered them all.

And for the first time in my life, I felt beautiful.
Finally part of the earth.
I touched the soil and he loved me back.

~Secretary Movie~

I have learned a lot about myself over the years, a lot of scary stuff and I have definitely earned a lot of battle scars. This movie though, Secretary, it speaks my soul in a way that only my journal can. It doesn’t talk about God or what’s right or wrong or the politics around it. It is sensual and full of the broken-raw emotion that we call love.

I am in love. I have been for over 2 years. I struggle a lot with needing because when he isn’t there I feel downright lost. Yet, I have only cut myself once since we started, maybe because he forbid it, or maybe because in his telling me “no” I found a freedom to embrace my emotions in a way that I never was able to do.

I am definitely a multi-faceted soul and I feel like I am always in this state of self-discovery and I also find that it is through the love I have that opens me up to know myself.

The quote above comes from the movie and really, I could quote the whole film. I am not sure who the writer is but I think it is clear that they are very familiar with the feelings of being different, scared, scarred and broken.

9. Taylor Solid Body

As I have said before, my brother plays guitar and my guitar looks at me rebelling against any type of music coming from it. I love to look at guitars though, for gifts, and simply for their beauty. It always amazes me how much detail can go into a guitar!! These Ttaylor solidbody standard guitars are absolutely beautiful to look at! I would love to hear one in action! This is definitely something you can get your grad, that they will keep forever, even if they don’t play, because it is a piece of art!!

10. Fifty Shades of Grey

Ebook: 356 pages
Published: May 25th 2011 by Vintage (first published January
By: Vintage (first published January 1st 2011)
Original title: Fifty Shades of Grey
ISBN: 1612130291
ISBN13: 9781612130293

Summary

When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

My Review

Fifty Shades of Grey
First, I NEVER planned to jump on the Fifty Shades bandwagon -ever. BUT, after seeing soooo much hate for it and the movie on social media, especially with people saying it was nothing but “rape” etc my interest was peaked. Afterall, why would this be THE BEST SELLER and talked about on every platform if it was nothing more than a rape story? Women wouldn’t be all over that! So, after seeing a post last week saying that if Christian Grey wasn’t a billionaire this would be an episode of Criminal Minds, I decided to jump in with both feet and see what it was all about. First, I watched the movie, everything is consentual, safe and follows the standard BDSM ‘rules’. I loved the movie so I bought the trilogy for kindle and the first book was sort of blah, the author, E.L. James was on the right track but the book struggled to come alive for me, perhaps because I had already seen the movie, which I must say was really well done WHILE following the book very closely -which is rare in books made into movies. Now I am reading Fifty Shades Darker and E.L. James seems to really be in the groove of things as the story is engaging, erotic and best of all relatable.

11. The Never-Open Desert Diner

Author: James Anderson
Hardcover: 288 pages
Published: February 15th 2015
By: Caravel Mystery Books
ISBN: 0912887109
ISBN13: 9780912887104

Summary

BEN JONES, the protagonist of James Anderson s haunting debut novel, The Never-Open Desert Diner (Caravel Books, February, 2015), is on the verge of losing his small trucking company. A single, thirty-eight-year-old truck driver, Ben s route takes him back and forth across one of the most desolate and beautiful regions of the Utah desert. The orphan son of a Native American father and a Jewish social worker, Ben is drawn into a love affair with a mysterious woman, Claire, who plays a cello in the model home of an abandoned housing development in the desert. Her appearance, seemingly out of nowhere, reignites a decades-old tragedy at a roadside café referred to by the locals as The Never-Open Desert Diner. The owner of the diner, Walt Butterfield, is an embittered and solitary old man who refuses to yield to change after his wife s death. Ben s daily deliveries along the atmospheric and evocative desert highway bring him into contact with an eccentric cast of characters that includes: John, an itinerant preacher who drags a life-sized cross along the blazing roadside; the Lacey brothers, Fergus and Duncan, who live in boxcars mounted on cinderblocks; and Ginny, a pregnant and homeless punk teenager whose survival skills make her an unlikely heroine. Ben s job as a truck driver is more than a career; it is a life he loves. As he faces bankruptcy and the possible loss of everything that matters to him, he finds himself at the heart of a horrific crime that was committed forty years earlier and now threatens to destroy the lives of those left in its wake. Ben discovers the desert is relentless in its grip, and what the desert wants, it takes. An unforgettable story of love and loss, Ben learns the enduring truth that some violent crimes renew themselves across generations. The Never-Open Desert Diner is a unique blend of literary mystery and noir fiction that evokes a strong sense of place. It is a story that holds the reader and refuses to let go and will linger long after the last page.

My Review

I *thought* I had reviewed this book but apparently I somehow forgot, which is a surprise because the book is a really great one! My dad is a truck driver so in some of the things I can relate simply by going to work with him when I was a kid. This book begins with a man who seems to be hiding in the desert, away from his feelings, we are then introduced to several other characters, all of whom have their own degree of mystery. The book is well written, a fun and easy read and one I am excited to keep on my shelf. I have an uncorrected proof that was sent to me in exchange for my honest review so I won’t go into detail in case edits were made. Overall five stars and a thumbs up!

By: Timewise Press
ISBN: 0692369201
ISBN13: 9780692369203

Summary

We live in a world of endless contradictions. Work vs. family. Money vs. fulfillment. Desires vs. obligations. The body vs. the spirit. We rely on conventional wisdom to point us forward. But conventional wisdom gets it wrong more often than we imagine.

Open this book and celebrate the marriage between the greatest collection of verbal images in history — King Solomon’s Book of Proverbs — and the most famous visual image in the world — Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

· Find tranquility in the midst of conflict
· Develop attitudes that deepen relationships
· Gain clarity through times of darkness and confusion
· Decrease cynicism and find joy in the daily miracles that fill our lives.

Take a guided tour beneath the surface of the world we live in through the lens of news stories, historical vignettes, folktales, the wonders of nature, and the discoveries of science — all woven together in a lyrical and surprising medley of the human experience.

Researchers have no explanation why people, when blindfolded, can’t walk a straight line; but what is it about human nature that makes us wander in circles? What does former NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to ease Manhattan traffic with “congestion pricing” reveal about the way we make decisions? What can fig harvesting, migraine headaches, and two Miss America titleholders teach us about the underpinnings of emotional well-being?

The answers to 3000 years’ of questions are here, revealed for every seeker of truth and self-awareness in the language of our modern era. Guided by the wisdom of Solomon and the mysteries of the Mona Lisa, learn how to find tranquility in the midst of chaos, how to savor the moments of everyday life, and how to resolve the paradoxes of the human heart.

My Review

I was raised Catholic and have been a Christian for as long as I can remember. So when Yonason Goldson emailed me inquiring about a review of this book I was a little hesitant. I received this book in exchange for an honest review. The book is amazing and I found myself taking notes before the first chapter even began. This book is full of wisdom and is beautifully written in a way that makes it relatable to everyone. It took me awhile to read through because I was note-taking and such. It will be on my shelf and in my “to read” pile for years to come!! Love it!

About the Author

I graduated the University of California with a degree in English in 1983, then set off across the United States hitching rides and sleeping in hostels, campgrounds, or by the side of the road.  Half a year later, I set out farther afield, this time across Europe, intending to circle the globe via Africa, Australia, and a return trip to Asia.  (But that’s another story.)

Too weary to carry on after months on ten-dollars-a-day, I crossed the Mediterranean for the Land of Israel.  There, I planned to occupy myself picking oranges on a kibbutz before stalking the southern hemisphere.  You can read about some of my adventures here .

We know what happens when Man plans.  A strong dollar had given a few million other young Americans the same idea, and there wasn’t a spot to be found on any kibbutz in the country — an unprecedented event.  With dwindling funds and a depleted constitution, I took a most unlikely turn and found myself as a neophyte in a talmudical seminary.

It took two months, ceaseless bouts of syllogistic sparring, and a former professor of philosophy from Johns Hopkins University to convince me to see the world in a new light.  Read about how my background in literature sparked my personal awakening here .

I spent the next nine years learning ancient languages and studying the accumulated wisdom of 3300 years, starting a family, earning my rabbinic ordination, and acquiring the credentials to teach Mankind’s most profound wisdom to others.  After leaving Israel, my wife and I spent a year teaching in Budapest, Hungary.  You can get a taste of our experiences here .

Two years later we moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where we have lived since 1996.  I teach high school, lecture adults, and write on contemporary issues, currents events, inspiration, education, childraising, history, philosophy, spirituality, and self-awareness for Jewish and popular journals.

In between the responsibilities of my day-job, I have been invited to address such organizations as the Kiwanis Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Oasis, as well as a variety of religious and secular audiences.

13. How to Enjoy Reading Your Bible

How to Enjoy Reading Your Bible
Author: Keith Ferrin
Paperback: 176 pages
Published: May 19th 2015
By: Bethany House Publishers (first published May 12th 2015)
ISBN: 0764213237
ISBN13: 9780764213236

Summary

Finding Joy in Reading God’s Word
When it comes to the Bible, most of us talk about two things: Is it true? And how should it impact our lives? But you may be missing something vitally important: Do you “like” the Bible? If you don’t, consistency will always be a struggle, and the Bible will be less likely to transform you.
Keith Ferrin has been talking to churches about enjoying the Bible for years, and now he’s compiled his most helpful tips. Written in a friendly, conversational tone, Ferrin teaches you how to develop a relational mindset and to approach the Bible in a way that lines up with the way your brain learns best. “How to Enjoy Reading Your Bible” will help you genuinely love the Bible more, read it more consistently, and apply God’s Word to your everyday life.

My Review

This is a simple to read book that really emphasises reading your Bible rather than spending hours or weeks learning how. I really appreciate that this book is so down to earth, has recommended scripture readings and each “chapter” is called a “Tip”. As someone who studies the Bible daily I know how easy it can become a chore and at times that has caused separation between me and the Word. This book came at the right time (God has good timing, perfect actually) and I read it just as I was beginning to slide into that slump. I am so excited to have received this book for review from Bethany House Publishers because I don’t think I would have bought it on my own. Now, it is a treasure that I will read again and again and I have already recommended to others!

If you are only going to buy one book this year about studying the Bible then this should be it! Definitely five stars!

14. A Strapping Strap – Guitar Accessories

My guitar came with this junky shoe lace material type strap that I can’t even figure out how to use so hanging out over on the Musicians Friend site and finding some nice ones at awesome prices is always a bonus. I am seeing this leather shoulder strap pad and thinking it would make a great birthday present for my brother who has about 5 guitars. We spend so much on our instruments why not invest in the accessories they deserve too?

Dear Homemaker,

Are the inmates running the asylum?

I hear you. Sometimes I look around my house and wonder how things got so out of hand.

When I was a little girl, I dreamed about getting married, becoming a mommy, and having my own home.

I imagined a home that was more than just 4 walls, a roof, and a mortgage.

I wanted to make a special place that was a magical mash-up of:

  • a school,
  • a playground,
  • a refuge,
  • a boo-boo “fix it” station,
  • a “you can do it” pep rally, and
  • a safe place for personal expression, sharing and growth.

And then real life happened…

…laundry, diapers, stretch marks, and never-ending meal prep… money worries, gritty floors, soap scum, and the stain that won’t come out of my son’s favorite shirt… holiday stress, and teaching my daughter to read (and master long division)… a husband who works long hours, a kid with the sniffles, stomach aches and a fever… and a secret dream to run my own little business from home.

And that’s why Erin and Stephanie created the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle… because as rewarding as it is, homemaking is hard work and it doesn’t always come easily.

I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

It is a complete library of carefully selected eBooks, eCourses, audios, online conferences, and printable packs designed to help you turn your house into a home… without all the overwhelm.

What’s in the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle?

Are there too many books in the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle?

Let me ask you a question.

Have you ever taken your family out for a buffet dinner… and then been disappointed when you couldn’t eat every single morsel on display?

Of course not!

Sure. There’s that first, breath-taking moment when you see and hear and smell the amazing meal spread before you… and you think, “Where will I even start?”

But that’s the thing… because you do start… with something.

Maybe it’s a tender flaky biscuit, or a piece of delicious roast beef, or maybe you’re like me and start with a piece of pie (mmm, blueberry or apple with whipped cream)?

So relax, enjoy, and start anywhere you like. Come back to the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle “buffet” as many times as you like. It’s all here for you.

Is the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle worth it?

In a word… yes!

To be absolutely certain, Erin and Stephanie asked questions, tried techniques and just about drove themselves crazy making sure that the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle was the very best homemaking resource anywhere.

They dug through hundreds of websites and connected with dozens of authors and teachers.

And then we all worked together to make these resources the most affordable possible.

And They Were Delighted to Help…

The result? This collection is a fraction of the price of what someone would pay for each resource individually!

For a short time, the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle… a complete library of:

I think Laura Ingalls Wilder said it best…

16. UV Protection, Bug Repellent and Fashion Collide! FINALLY!!

I saw this YouTube video for a cool head band and I am really excited to see about ordering one! According to the video it can be worn as a headband, under a bike helmet, a s a ponytail or even as a wrist band. It shows it on both men and women which is also fun! I am so excited for you to watch how to wear a half buff at AvidMax website and to let me know what you think and how it will work for you. I have a couple of people in mind who I think this would work really well for, like my dad who works outside all the time and gets sunburned and a friend who spends much of her time in the garden growing and teaching. Plus, we also have all those people who are on medications (like myself) who can use some extra sun protection since some medications make you more sensitive to the sun. There is a “Buff” for pretty much all weather from winter to summer with UV protection or without, and some with bug repellent and UV protection! How exciting is that?

I hope you enjoy this video and give this awesome product a try because it looks like it has been thought out for every season and for every wearer.

Fun Facts

“The UV Buff is made from Coolmax Extreme fabric to block 95% of UV rays* and wick sweat quickly away from your skin with its four-channel fiber. Ultimately designed to keep you comfortable and protected hour after hour on long, sun-filled adventures.”

“Don’t let bug bites and sunburn put a damper on your adventure. Infused with an invisible repellent that lasts through 70 washings, the UV Insect Shield Buff helps keep biting insects at bay. Plus, it blocks 95% of harmful UV rays and features Polygiene technology to kill odor-causing bacteria.”

19. I Have Posted so MUCH about THIS company!

It has been awhile since I did a post over here but wanted to take a few seconds to remind everyone how awesome Musician’s Friend is. Now that the holidays are over our kids are back in full swing and with the weather being much cooler they are spending time inside and working on extracurricular activities, this includes music of all types.

Why not use this time to learn something new with the best possible tools you can? Music is a definite investment but it is well worth it in the end!

If you have a future rockstar in the family or you have your own band then electrified Washburns may be for you!

21. Comment on The Kidney Sellers – Sigrid Fry-Revere by Marisa

If you are not in Iran it is illegal to sell your kidney. It is also illegal to sell your kidney by traveling to Iran. You can face a huge fine, I believe up to 50,000 PLUS up to five years in jail even if the procedure is NOT done in the United States. Donating an organ for profit or personal gain is highly illegal. For more information contact your country regarding organ donation to find out current policies. I should add that in Iran they only receive about 3000 for their kidney. It is also NOT recommended to do if you are a woman of child-bearing age from what I understand. If you think you won’t get caught if you do it out of country consider the next time you need an MRI, Ultrasound or even a physical exam as it will be noticed and correct legal steps will be taken to prosecute you and the recipient.

Can a Small Town Lawyer Get Lucky?

Atlanta’s billionaire heiress Annie Hartford has no desire to marry a man she does not love; but her controlling father has been calling the shots for his 29 year-old daughter her entire life. This time he has pushed Annie too far.
With minutes to spare before she is to walk down the aisle in front of 600 guests, Annie is forced to make a decision. She hijacks the family limo, only to have it break down in small town Pinckney, Georgia. Annie, who has never wanted for anything, suddenly finds herself homeless, penniless, with only the clothes on her back, a designer wedding gown and diamond tiara.
~~~
Small town lawyer and restaurant owner Sam Ballard has been unlucky in love, and the last thing he needs is a red-hot blonde in a short waitress uniform who seems hell-bent on breaking every dish in his Dixieland Café. Still, he can’t very well fire her, she has won the hearts of everyone in town.
Will rich girl Annie find happiness living in a garage apartment, wearing second-hand clothes, and making her way around town on a borrowed bicycle? As for Sam, can he put his past behind him and trust that Annie won’t run home to daddy when her new life presents one obstacle after another?
