Hey, you guys want to go behind the scenes? See what happens behind those scenes?
The Scorsese tribute show that Spoke Art curated at Bold Hype Gallery in New York last weekend was a sweet success. The piece I created for the show was called “The Five Points Experience”. It was inspired by the epic fight scene at the beginning of Martin Scorsese’s Gangs Of New York.
Spoke Art will be releasing a limited edition print of “The Five Point Experience” at 5pm PST today! So go the Spoke Art site and prepare for that.
Would you like to go behind the scenes and see what went into this piece? Well, let me take you there, my friends. You deserve it.
1. INSPIRATION
I very much enjoyed the opening fight scene from this film. It reminded me of those classic Bruegel paintings depicting the everyday craziness of medieval life in the streets. People hanging out, fooling around, fighting, chatting, selling things, standing on their heads, these have been some of the most exciting paintings for me to look at ever since i was a child. Old newspaper illustrations of the five points gave the impression that the New York streets of the 1800′s were just as packed with crazy activity.
Check out all these medieval guys having a blast together in the streets…

The New York streets were just as packed with activity as these medieval villages…
And here is Scorsese’s Five Points. Bill The Butcher’s gang is getting all pumped in this first shot here.

2. DRAWING TIME!
I took all of this reference to the cafe and sketched dudes fighting and having a rough time along with some loose layout sketches…

3. COMPUTER TIME
I scanned all these doodles and composed them into a nice little piece. Very loose of course, so i don’t get bummed on myself if the final painting doesn’t turn out exactly like the drawings. I like to use the doodles as they are exactly and just blow them up so they retain that same energy.

Put some rough values in there so see how the groups of dudes looked there. It is hard to tell when it is just line work.

This is what i printed out and traced onto the watercolor paper…

4. Tracing Time
I traced that thing right onto the paper with my pencil and my light box. It was no big deal.

5. Painting time
Then it was painting time. I started by choosing some colors that might go nicely together and tried to stick to those for the rest of the time..

I like to do a big wash of the background color first. And then i put all the skin tones in. I don’t know why i do this. It’s just a superstitious thing that i do.

Then i just put all the basic colors in there. It looks like a mess usually and I always get a little worried at this stage.

When i can’t handle it any longer i mix a good line color and paint the line work. I am thankful for this point because then they start to look like little dudes with little lives…

Paint that house. Don’t forget the house.

Finally i could relax and begin bringing out the value contrast a bit and make those darks way darker. Make those pants really pop there.

6. CALLING IT DONE!
Eventually, i just need to call it done because I could noodle on this thing forever. So after adding some gouache spots of white for snow, i call it done! And it looked like this! And still does to this day!

oh, wait! THE FRAMING!
I found this amazing old frame in a thrift shop and my friends over at Make A Frame in Brooklyn turned it into the sweetest little piece. I was super happy about how it turned out. I could see it chilling in an old bar in the Five Points perhaps.

Thank you, everyone for reliving the magic with me. If you are interested in a print of “The Five Points Experience”, you should jump on it today at 5pm PST at Spoke Art!
Ok! Later days!

Well, it is the Holiday season again, you guys. Time to get super joyous and give things to each other.
I know it can sometimes be hard to think of things to give to loved ones, but don’t worry because i have made a list for you. The MASTER LIST that is sure to get any loved one incredibly pumped. And here it be…
- The Great Showdowns Book – Let us start this list with the crown jewel of gifts. The Great Showdowns book, the first collection of showdowns from the smash hit series The Great Showdowns. This little book will fit nicely into any super large sock or jacket pocket. If your loved one likes movies, then they will almost certainly freak out on this. You can look through it together and strengthen your relationship through working together.

- Great Showdowns Print Set #10 – If decorating is more your loved one’s bag, then perhaps he or she might like to hang some Great Showdowns on their walls. There is a brand new Great Showdowns print set available at Gallery 1988 for exactly that person. They could hang them together in a group or strewn all over the house in secret places.

- Original Great Showdowns paintings – Or how about actual paintings that are already framed? That might look nice on your loved one’s walls.

- The Great Showdowns Coaster set – I’ll bet your loved ones enjoy refreshing beverages. Well , these Great Showdowns coasters will make great spots to rest those beverages between sips. What a Great Showdowns Holiday it will be!

- Original Paintings and things from Gallery Nucleus – Perhaps you already have just too much Great Showdowns stuff and would like some other paintings for the walls. Well, don’t worry about that because Gallery Nucleus has all kinds of things from paintings to prints to even shirts!

- PRINTS from Poster Cabaret – If prints are what your loved ones really dig then you should probably go check out Poster Cabaret because they’ve got a whole bunch of new ones over there. Spacey ones, Twin Peaksy ones, Spidery ones, and just loving couple ones. Just all kinds of nice ones.

- Amazing Everything: The Art of Scott C. - Of course, if your loved one did not get this book last year and had some real tears about it, then perhaps you should remedy that this year! It was the topic of 2012 and you really don’t want your loved one to miss out on these conversations.

And that is the Scott C Holiday Gift List! I hope you totally find something that they might like!
*****Oh, and a special note: If you live in New York City and would like any of this stuff signed by my hands, i will be doing a signing party in Brooklyn at Cotton Candy Machine on December 8th, 7- 8 pm! We will have books and prints and even original Showdowns paintings for you! We will also be releasing a new limited edition set of Tender Times prints! So you should come!

Well, i am back from the UK travels, you guys. It was an amazing trip. Thank you to Forbidden Planet in London and Thought Bubble in Leeds!
Here are some photos from our adventures:
First night was spent with bros Olly Moss, Rex Crowle, and Aled Lewis near this old clock…

The signing at Forbidden Planet with Olly Moss was super fun.
Derek Bremner took some awesome photos of the event. You can go look at them right HERE.

Katie and I visited Corfe Castle. My new favorite castle…

We also visited Haworth in the North. The little town where the Bronte sisters lived…

The Friday before Thought Bubble was the insane Mondo show. It was pretty neat to see all those posters large, as they were meant to be seen. The Q&A was a crazy mob scene. But a graciously controlled mob scene. Justin is a good master of ceremonies.

Thought Bubble itself was absolutely amazing. I could not believe how many people came by the table. I was blown away and almost had some tears. Thought Bubble itself was super well organized! Lisa and Clark were the best. Thanks to Nabil at Travelling Man for getting all the books there!

Met some amazing people at the show. Some of them gave me sweet little drawings! Like this pleasant one here of me showing down with a TV!

Alex was the dude who helped KAte and I out at our tables all weekend. He was a real together dude.

The big Thought Bubble gathering was at this place called the Corn Exchange. The outside looked like a cool old dome, the inside looked like the inside of an actual universe with organized stars…

The whole weekend was splendid and i am happy that i got to spend good quality time with old and new friends. Here is an example of some friends: Olly, Aled, Becky and Frank, and Clark!

That’s the end! Thanks, the UK. You are pretty great over there.

Hello, you guys!
Some of you may have seen the Great Showdowns livestreams before and that is great news if you have. We did a one most recently at Gallery 1988 Return Of The Great Showdowns exhibition (on display until OCtober 13th) where a live studio audience was on hand to watch the painting of a very special showdown from the film Back To The Future Part 2. Jeff Yorkes was kind enough to document the day with photos.
Would you like to see what happened? well, let us journey forth together.
1) Here are the materials laid forth for everyone to see. Pencils, pens, watercolor paints, brushes, watercolor paper, copy paper, and a plastic bag. I did not use the pens for anything. they were just there.

2) Here i begin to sketch out the dudes in the hoverboard scene. (earlier in the day, i chose the hoverboard scene and did my RESEARCH, gathering photo reference from the internet. It is all chilling there on a Cintiq, so i can just look at it when the heck ever.) i am in the process of drawing young biff in this photo right here.

3) Here is one of the pages of sketches that we scanned in. not super tight and doesn’t totally look like the people yet, but that’s ok because i can mess with stuff in photoshop later.

4) And here i am doing those photoshop things. i’ve cut and pasted all the sketches into one file and am now just moving little bits around, like eyes and ears, so they look a littlemore like the real characters.

5) When the drawing is solid in photoshop, i printed it out and pulled out my friend Chris’s enormous light board that he let me borrow. Thing was nuts. I had to put it on the floor and get kneely with it. Here i am putting my special homemade cardboard window around the little watercolor paper to it isn’t too bright for my sensitive eyes.

6) In fact, that monster lightboard was so bright, i had to put other things around it to block out the light, like trash and some weird black zipper case. Anywho, i traced the drawing right onto the paper there using a 4H pencil because it needed to be a real subtle line. I don’t want people noticing it later. The lines. And it’s still real sloppy looking at this point because i am just going to be painting it again anyway.

7) Here i start laying in all the colors! Very lightly. Pink bat, jackets, shoes, all that… i bought that paint plate on ebay a million years ago as a part of a whole set of nice plates, that i can’t find anymore.

8) Check it out. More colors. It looks almost ready for the line stage.

9) Oh wait. I guess i have more orange to paint on there somewhere. Who knows where though. Maybe the board? I seem pretty into it. Biff is yelling on the screen there trying to get my attention.

10) Here is a close up of the paints just before the line stage! Look at that loosey goosey mess of colors.

11) Line stage! My favorite stage. But also so stressful because this is when it really does need to look like the guys. Sometimes it is sweet success and other times it is not sweet success. But almost always, i am very quiet during this stage. A very tense and suspenseful stage. The studio audience was sweating.

13) And after a bit more value touch up, we call it done! A brand new GREAT SHOWDOWN is born. Cute little Showdown.

That is about it! Thanks to everyone who came!
If you would like to see this showdown or other like it get painted, you can go to livestream.com/scottlava.
Ok, thanks! Talk to you soon!

Well, that was sure a splendid week last week. Want to Hear about it? Ok, i shall tell you about it.
The Great Showdowns exhibition went super well! Thanks to Gallery 1988 for setting up such a great show and for all of you who came out for it! I very much enjoyed myself. I hope you did as well. There were many familiar faces and many brand spanking new faces that i totally enjoyed seeing.
If you would like to view the show in it’s entirety and purchase any of them go to nineteeneightyeight.com
The contest went very well. There were 10 people that handed in perfect scores, so i drew the final name out of the hat that was shaped like Darth Vader’s head. and the winner was and is………
Tony Piantesdosi!
He chose the film BRICK as the showdown he would like painted. Which is exciting because i have never seen Brick, but i am very much looking forward to watching it and maybe eating some mint snacks while i do so. I hear the dialog is pretty interesting to listen to. I will paint it for you soon!
Anyway, here are some photo highlights from the show. (Some photos were taken by some of you! thank you!)
1) Here is Katie hanging the show. She did it all in one day. She is amazing and experienced at that sort of thing. She used special tools to make sure everything was straight….

2) Here i am painting the title of the show on the wall. I used a shakey hand technique that well trained artists use….

3) All my favorite faces were the first to line up for the show. Josh brought a chair to sit in. I like all of these guys a lot. They are super nice people. Josh, Peter, Germain, Amanda, Richard, the whole gang. It’s a real good gang.

4) The line started growing a bit, so i went out to hang with everybody and draw some portraits…

5) Here i am drawing someone’s portrait. This is what my face looks like while i am looking at someone else’s face…

6) Here is an example of a portrait. This particular portrait was of Peter. I labeled it in case people had a difficult time figuring it out.

7) We opened the doors and let in all of the good times party….

8) Those red dots mean that those Showdowns will have new homes to live in after the exhibition comes down.

9) Check out this moody photo someone took…

10) OMG, look at the tattoo that this fellow got of my Beatles painting from a couple months back! It looks pretty sweet! Almost looks like a forearm gatling gun tattoo. but if you look close… it’s just the Beatles with long legs.

11) I got some amazing little gifts from people! Like these little guys…

12) And here is Tony Piantesdosi’s winning scorecard. Tony’s got a sweet writing style. I am excited to talk with him about this film BRICK.

ON SATURDAY, we did the Livestream with a LIVE studio audience! It was super fun, but not without it’s technical difficulties. In fact, who knows if the videos will ever be on Livestream, but you can go see if you want! right here: livestream.com/scottlava
We chose BACK TO THE FUTURE 2 as the Showdown to be painted. Specifically, the hoverboard scene. Because that’s the main part i remember.
The live studio audience was awesome. lots of sweet questions and comments going on. Thanks for coming, everyone!

And here is the finished Showdown! I’ll post it on greatshowdowns.com this week.

And now for the EXTRA CREDIT STORY:
I had the amazing opportunity to visit NPH and the gang on the set of How I Met Your Mother. What an amazing bunch of people that is. A sweet TV show family.

Chris and Pam were calling all kinds of shots that day. They are the best. And they were wearing shirts of the HIMYM Showdown i painted for Pam. Best surprise ever to see this.

They put me in a bar scene to support Jason. I pretty much nailed it. i probably looked like a was talking about some very interesting stuff behind him there.

Then we posed.

But oh, man, you guys. Look at this. The whole crew wearing the shirt! It was really the best ever. man. I love this whole group! Super fun visit.

Anywho, thanks for looking at all this stuff. i very much enjoyed my trip and feel super inspired now that i am back home in NYC!
Oh, and you can all buy the new Great Showdowns book very soon! in bookstores everywhere and online in late October! Keep your eyes peeled!
Thanks, everyone! You are great!
