Hey, you guys!
Boy, did I love Mad Max: Fury Road. I can’t handle how much I love that film. It was beautiful and so fun to watch. George Miller is just the best.
I decided I would paint a showdown from the film. There are a lot of people in this showdown because I really just wanted to paint everyone! I was so jealous of the character and hot rod designs. I wish i came up with that stuff. The Mad Max world is a pretty unique world.
So I painted it. Would you like to walk down memory lane with me as i painted it? It was not as much work as actually making the film Fury Road, but it was an ok amount of work.
Ok, here goes:
FIRST THING TO DO was gather what images of the film I could find and take screenshots from the movie trailers. I enjoyed sketching those hot rods. Geez louise. I sketched them all over this paper here. Check it out…

I scanned all these little sketches into the computer, cut them up and moved them around in photoshop to make a sweet little composition. Most everyone just stood there looking pleased, but the War Boys had to be having a real good time. SO i made them having just a blast all over the place. They looked like they really enjoyed being War Boys in the movie didn’t they?

I printed the drawing out in pieces and taped them together, so I could trace the drawing onto watercolor paper.

I started laying in all the big washes of colors first, just so i could feel like i accomplished something early on. I also painted all the skin first for some reason. I am not sure why i do that. A superstitious maneuver i suppose.

Here is my little cat’s tongue brush as I painted the wheel there on the Gigahorse.

Everything is pretty light here as i started out. Here’s the War Rig. See all the skin painted in? why do i do that first? i do not know.

Look how sloppy i painted those wheels. Geez.

Everything is pretty sloppy at first. That’s ok, i can tighten it up later. But Mad Max vehicles should be all janky anyway, right?

Oh, Geez. Here i am starting on the Doof Wagon. At this point, i was sort of dreading the speakers. I was not looking forward to painting all those speakers. But i sure loved that Doof Wagon. And i was really looking forward to painting the red pajamas on the guitar player dude.

The speakers. Here they go. Janky circles all over the place.

Alright. All the basic color washes are laid in very lightly. I can step back and check it out happily.

Now i can start my favorite part. The linework. Also using the cat’s tongue brush and watercolors. I only use two brushes really. The cat’s tongue and the flat brush.

The one stressful part of the linework stage is the likeness on the faces. I am always a little stressed that they will work. Sometimes the drawings look pretty awesome and i screw them up at this stage. Other times, it works the opposite way. And still other times, they just work ok.

Little War Boy is checking out the speakers. The Speakers look a bit better now.

I liked painting these pole lines for some reason. Long relaxing janky lines.

All the lines are in. Now i go back and punch up the values. Make everything contrast nicely.

Oh, the War Rig is looking better i think. Getting some of those darks in there.

Carving out those skulls and the grating. Super satisfying.

red pajamas on the guitar player! Aw, so nice. I know some of you are bummed that i flipped the guitar player. He doesn’t play left handed like i portray him. I just flipped him and forgot about it. My mistake. Please forgive me everyone. Especially you guitar players. I know how you feel.

Ah, yes. Everything is getting darker. I am starting to dig it.

I am finally digging the speakers here. They look nice when you can get those darks in there to pop them out.

Everything needed to be darkened at this point. Even the linework. I usually just darken the outlines and leave the inner lines lighter. It holds the drawing together better.

I’m getting really into this Doof Wagon here.

I can finally figure out what certain parts look like. Like this arm here that raises the scoop plow on the front of the War Rig. These are things i wouldn’t have ever noticed had i not painted these things! i like to discover those little things in the designs.

Treads are looking nice and dirty.

Ah, the gang is looking happy!

But these guys are just so excited to be there. At this point, i signed my name in the corner there. It is my little reward.

And there it is all done!

Thank you for walking down memory lane with me, you guys. I hope you enjoyed these memories. See you soon!

Last week, i was one of four authors to speak at the Spring Festival of Children’s Literature in Frostburg, MD. What a wonderful show, you guys! Thank you to everyone at Frostburg University for hosting me and showing me a splendid time. I love hanging with teachers and librarians. They are my favorites.
Here are some memories from the trip!
Frostburg is a charming little mountain town in western Maryland. We stayed in this old hotel called the Gunter. It had a jail, a doll room, and a Shirley Temple room inside there. A strange little place that i liked very much.

Here is the auditorium where the talks went down. All the projects from local classrooms lined the walls and the stage. it was crazy heartwarming.

Look at these amazing Hug Machine projects!! My heart melted all over the ground.

Our guide Carla took us for milkshakes at the same booth where Harry S. Truman had milkshakes way back when. Brian Floca and Matt Phelan were two of the four speakers that also participated in the festival. Good dudes.

On one of the mornings, i spoke to a couple 3rd grade classes at the La Vale Library. They were great!

At the end of our time together, they presented me with a little book they all made together about they own Hug MAchine concepts. I couldn’t believe it. You can see on my face here, that i could not believe it.

All in all, it was a wonderful festival. i came away very inspired by the other speakers and by the energy of the whole festival. So great!

Hey, you guys!
Do you guys remember Zombie in Love?? It is the book by Kelly DiPucchio and I made a couple years back about the poor Mortimer the zombie who had a real rough time finding love. He eventually did find love in another zombie named Mildred, but it was no cake walk. It was a tender story. It even had worms in it. A theater group in Portland, OR, even made a children’s musical production out of it!
Well, I am happy to share with you that Mortimer and Mildred are back with the sequel book called Zombie in Love 2 +1! It follows the young couple as they journey into parenthood! A brand new human baby is left on their doorstep and they must learn to care for him. They discover quickly that human babies are not into zombie stuff. Parenthood can be a struggle normally, so you can imagine how tough it is for these two zombie parents to care for a human baby. I mean, just imagine! And guess what? All your other friends are in this book, the zombie dog, the worms, even a new zombie cat. You’ll probably love it.
Anyway, Kelly DiPucchio and I are super excited for you to check out this book! Kelly is touring around with the book now, so you should track her down! I will probably do so in a couple months, starting with a show in LA at Gallery Nucleus. More on this soon!
Here are some pages from the book. Go get lovey dovey!

Hello, everyone!
It is that time of the year again. When we show our loved ones how much we care about them by coming up with super clever gifts for them to enjoy! It’s tough coming up with gift ideas, I know, but don’t worry! You can get all your shopping done in one place over at the Scott C Shop with a SCOTT C SHOPPING SPREE!!
And for a limited time we are having a HOLIDAY SALE! 10% off everything in the store (use code Holiday10) and free domestic shipping for orders over $150! Nov 28 – Dec 1st!
Here are some brand new ideas for your loved one for the Holidays this year:
IDEA #1: NEW PRINTS
We’ve got all kinds of new prints in the shop! The adventures of Sonny the Fox in the forest for example. All kinds of cute little scenes. There’s the scene where Sonny is performing for his forest friends...

Or some of the quieter moments where Sonny is Chatting, Peering into a Pool, or Posing With Spoils. You can even get these in a Power Pack of 3 if you want!

Or perhaps you are feeling romantic! The Ghost: Pottery Wheel series reflects upon one of the most romantic scenes in film history. Tender moments with some of our favorite Ghosts and ghost companions.
There is the fellow who busts ghosts and his very first ghost catch!
There is the packing man and the ghost that often chases him around that strange maze!
There is the little monster and his Ghost Host from Space!
There is the young Jedi and the old man who taught him how to swing a sword made of light!
Or if you can’t decide get the 4 Pack!

Idea #2: IPHONE CASES
This is brand new to the shop. Three different designs for a sturdy protective case for the Iphone 6. The Skeleton Warrior Waterpark, the Bunny Amongst Plants, or the Cosmos. All ready to protect your phone as a solid little case.
If you have a different phone or a laptop or a tablet or even a video game system, you can go to Nuvango.com to choose from 6 different Scott C designs! Your loved one is going to freak out.

Idea #3: HUG MACHINE (the picture book)
I am sure you want to give your loved one a hug for the holidays. But even if you do not, let this picture book do the hugging for you! Hug Machine is a tender story of a child who is very good at hugging. He hugs everything and enjoys telling the world about it. A self proclaimed little Hug Machine. Written and illustrated by Scott C!
There are all kinds of books at the Scott C Shop actually! Go see!

Idea #4: SHIRTS
I’ll bet your loved one would like to wear a nice new shirt. Well, we’ve got three shirts for your loved ones to wear! The Whale Hug shirt, the Body House shirt, and the Dogs Being Dogs shirt! All fine shirts to make anyone look wonderful.

Idea #5: GHOST TOTE
Sometimes it is tough to carry all of your new gifts around. This GHOST TOTE can carry those gifts all over the place! It’s got ghosts on it! Ghosts the float there while you carry your things!

And thus ends the Scott C Holiday Gift Guide! I hope you have a wonderful holiday time however you spend it! See you in the year 2015!

HEy, you guys! We have three winners of the HUG of HUGS contest last week. You want to meet them? They are great.
1. Jatinder sent in a few photos, but this one was just the best! He is dressed as Hug Machine himself hugging a mailbox that looks different than the ones i am used to. This one is in the UK, so i suppose this is the first British Hug Machine to be documented. Extra marks for closing his eyes tenderly. Marks docked for not wearing red boots.

2. Peter is hugging a regal looking eagle carved out of wood and wearing a scarf. It’s a one armed hug, but that is ok because i think he is holding the camera there. The eagle is too in it’s zone to care.

3. Justin sent in this photo of two special people hugging with birthday hats on. The one with yellow hair seems to have a dog treat balancing on his or her nose. You must hug very tenderly to keep that dog treat balanced on there for sure.

Each of these amazing people shall receive a signed copy of Hug Machine from me and a little drawing!
Super pumped about it. Thank you everyone who sent in photos!

Alright, everyone! It is time for you to get all huggy.
I am on tour for my new book HUG MACHINE and to celebrate, we are going to have a special little contest called HUG of HUGS. Here is how this contest works:
I encourage YOU to take pictures of yourself or loved ones hugging something. The crazier this thing, the better. Get super creative, you guys. Hug Machine has hugged a whale, a mailbox, a rock, and ice cream truck. Those are some examples of sort of creative things. What can you hug? Just take that picture and tweet it, post it, email it to me ([email protected]), do whatever! But make sure you use this little hashtag: #HugMachine and if you want, you can use #HugofHugs.
You can send me things up through this Friday October 3rd, at which point, I shall choose the top 3 photos and then post them for all of you to see next week. The TOP 3 HUGS shall receive a copy of Hug Machine signed by me and a little drawing of you hugging whatever you want.
So go to it! Go hug some stuff.
..scott
Oh, and you guys, don’t hug any dangerous stuff, ok? Be safe out there with your hugging.

You guys! Today is the most exciting of days. For today is PUBLICATION DAY for my new picture book called HUG MACHINE!!
That is right! HUG MACHINE is out today in stores all over the place. Whatever store carries books near you will probably have it today! This is incredibly exciting for me because this will be the first picture book in which I have both written the words AND drawn the pictures. An exciting milestone, my friends.
HUG MACHINE is the story of a child who is super down with hugging. He is the self-proclaimed Hug Machine and he is very excited to tell everyone about it. He is very good at hugging and he is not shy to show the world. He is ready for you to watch how amazing he is at hugging…

He hugs people…

But he also hugs things! Nothing escapes. Nothing.

He even solves problems with his hugs…

Sometimes he comes up against some real tough hugs. Hugs that would make others give right the heck up and turn away…

But the Hug Machine does not back down ever…

I won’t tell you what happens here, but i’ll bet you can take a wild guess…

And of course, there is a spread with a lot going on and a dotted line trail for you to follow the Hug Machine’s exploits. Because i love spreads like that. I am just so into them…

And if you, the reader, need a hug? The Hug Machine will hug you. Do not worry!

So go check it out, you guys! I am so excited. I hope you like it and spread the word for this little guy because he reeeeeally wants the world to know that he is amazing at hugging. It is important for everyone to know how good he is at it!
And to celebrate this momentous occasion, we have made this little hug workout video to help everyone prepare to hug the heck out of everything this week! When you bring the book home, you will be glad that you have this little workout to keep your hugging energy in tip top shape…
BOOK TOUR! I will be posting more about my touring schedule soon. One thing I can tell you about is HUG A BOOK WEEK taking place Sept 6 – 13th. I can also tell you about the launch party/exhibition for the book at Gallery Nucleus on September 6th!

HUG A BOOK WEEK - Sept 6 – 13th
Are you a teacher? a librarian? Do you have a bookshop? Or do you just have some kids that you are excited about? Hug A Book Week will be a super exciting time for everyone! You can find out more at HugMachineBook.com. There are activities you can print out and other exciting things. Go check it out.

HUG MACHINE Exhibition and Launch Party - Sept 6 – (Alhambra, CA)
We will be having a party and exhibition at Gallery Nucleus on Sept 6th. It will be just a wonderful time. I will be reading the book, doing some demos and signing books. The night of the opening should be a really fun time.
OPENING NIGHT HIGHLIGHTS
- 6-7pm: Read, color and hugs-ercise with Scott!
- Free admission
- Hourly raffle prizes
- Complimentary refreshments including pizza!

So go out and hug some things today! And get that book to read to your loved ones. If you are too nervous to hug someone, perhaps just reading this book to them will do the trick.
