3. Inklings!

I also started to experiment lately with Sumi ink and started a series of Black Cats. They are SO MUCH FUN! but messy......but fun!

The idea of just using simple contour silhouette of these black cat and letting loose with abstract textures has been rattling around in my head awhile now. Last month a dear friend suggested me to paint a simple watercolor painting of a black cat for her, that made me think about this idea more and more...

Till one warm sunny Friday afternoon, I decided to procrastinate and ignore all the work on my to-do-list and do a little experiment with some sumi ink I found stashed away in my closet. (that ink has been around 6 years at least)...... It was a lot of fun. Creating art with no expectations, no problems to solve and not worrying about the final outcome. The whole process was pure, uncomplicated and enjoyable. Letting go of control and letting the materials do its magic...  I will definitely make more.

5 of these ink paintings are available as art prints in my Etsy store!
Link: www.etsy.com/shop/isabellakung
I'm doing a storewide 10% off sale right now till the end of August. Use code: FIRSTSUMMER10

I'll also be doing art print giveaway soon, so follow me on Instagram or Facebook to find out next week!

4. Good Evening Bubo (Color samples!)

Finally got around to working on my story again! Did another draft and polished up my manuscript some more and did 4 finished paintings as color samples for my dummy! Can't wait to show my critique group my new dummy and see what they think. Then after is the dreaded process of research and submitting it.....><

5. Father's day!

For father's day this year, I finished an illustration just in time for my Dad. I remember there used to be a fence covered in morning glories near my home in Hong Kong, my dad will always pick me one when we walk by, and I always called it trumpet flowers.

I'll probably put these up for sale as greeting cards on my Esty store next year. Stay tuned!

6. Mother's day

I did this piece specifically for Mother's Day. Inspired by some of my fondest memories of my childhood with my mother. Living in the US (my parents resides in Hong Kong), I sorely miss her cooking, as I'm sure most of you out there can relate. Nothing beats Mom's cooking!

Used this opportunity to try out a new technique. Basically after my initial lighter layers of watercolor are dry, I used a scoring pen to indent the watercolor paper, leaving patterns to indicate the steam, smoke and aroma of a home cooked meal. Then I added a layer of color pencil on top.

This is a very personal piece to me. This year for the first time in my entire LIFE, I forgot my mother's birthday! I was so filled with guilt and sadness! Not that my mother was mad or made me feel bad, she was actually fine with it. We are a very easy going family. In fact, I recall her forgetting my birthday last year. I was just so sad that I have become so preoccupied with my life that I'm starting to lose track of my family back home. My parents have sacrificed so much for my brother and I. They worked hard their entire life and saved money for our future. Now my brother and I are both living in the US, and I only visit every 2-3 years, the least I can do is to remember their birthday! Plus, I've always been proud of remembering all my family's birthday.(unlike my father and brother cough* cough*)

So right after that, I immediately started working on a card for my mother. Finished it a month before mother's day and mailed her a large size print early. I ordered some postcards too to spread the love! Cheers to Mother's everywhere!

8. Watercolor Demos

Here's a few demos I've done for my classes this semester.

Did this little sheep as an example of the Facet Shaped Assignment, it's a great exercise for practicing edge control and play with design/patterns:

Here are my animal demos. Beginning later and finish.
I remember timing myself and I finished the rooster in 1.5 hours! The demo only lasted 30 mins, then stayed after class to finish it up. I was pretty happy with that time, teaching definitely helps to train me on my speed

Then last but not least, portraits. Thinking about adding a listing to my esty store for custom portraits...emm....maybe....

9. Quick Studies

February - May, I made a point to force myself to go to more quick studies workshop at the University that I teach at. I've always been rather intimated by all these 1 min, 2 min, 3 min poses, especially when some of my friends and colleges who go there regularly are just so amazing at it.

I had only gone a handful of times before this year. BUT NO MORE! The only way to get better at something is practice! I went almost every week, sometimes every other week...

Now looking back at it, I have definitely improved a bit from the start. Can't wait for next semester!

10. Experiments with Yupo paper

Yikes, has it been almost 3 months since I last updated? Well to make it up. I'm going to post quite a lot these next few days! So where did I leave off last time? February - March....

In my last post I mentioned I did some experimenting then with Yupo paper. It is basically like painting watercolor on plastic. Hard to control but a lot of fun. Unlike normal paper, the watercolor does not get absorbed into the paper. Instead, it sits on top of the Yupo surface. I love the interesting patterns and edges when you do wet-on-wet, but it also means you can't build a lot of layers on top because it lifts so easily. The upside to that is you don't have to save your "whites" anymore and can easily scrub away any mistakes/highlights...

I named it the Aftermath. I watched a documentary last year where a scientist explained that an over populated ocean with jellyfish is a symbol of an dying sea, one of the many effects of global warming/pollution. Since then I had this idea of a single boat passing through an oil spill, revealing our sea over crowded by jellyfishes, creating a beautiful mess. Below are some WIP and final pictures.

I also did a fan art illustration for my friend Ben Jelter (Instagram name @BenJelter ). This is the main character in his webcomic Heliosphere. You should all check this crazy story out, really great stuff. http://Heliospherecomic.com

I like this paper, plan to do some more of these in my spare time!

11. Sketches and Valentines

Been sketching more lately:

and started a personal piece that I've wanted to do for a long time. Its on yupo paper, It's fun and frustrating at the same time! It throws out the standard rules of watercolor and you can lift things out with just a little dab, so saving whites are not an issue. It's slick surface forces you to be looser and creates beautiful textures. It can be hard to control at times, because its literally like painting on plastic, buts that's part of the fun too. Below is the work in process, will post more as I find time to complete the piece.

I hope everyone had a great valentines day yesterday. Even though it is an over the top commercialized holiday, it has always been a rather special day for me. Not only does my husband buy me flowers, it is also the anniversary of adopting our cats from SPCA 6 years ago. Our valentines gift for each other this year: he bought me a pot of my favorite plant, hydrangeas, and I painted a our baby girls as a heart shape for him. I love my family and can't imagine my life without them

13. Goodbye 2014, Hello 2015

Its been a bit more than a month since my last post, and so much has happened! I must say it is the busiest I've been in my entire life! I have never been so exhausted physically and mentally, glad I got to go on a vacation to unplug afterwards. So to recap:

SF BAZAAR went great,  I sold out of all the Fuzzball calendar and totebags! Hedgehog totes were really popular too. Too bad I didn't take a picture of all my products... but sleep deprivations does terrible things to the brain, I don't recommend it ;).  It was a lot of work preparing everything, but it was definitely worth it. Thanks to all of those who stopped by and said hi! Will be applying for another booth next year!

Me and my booth mate Ciaee

After that weekend, I wrapped up teaching for the Fall semester and started packing. Yes you read right! I moved! And boy did we had to move fast, packed everything up in 4-5 days, WHILE taking 2 full day (9 hours) scuba diving lessons. Moved into our new place and had to unpack everything in 3 days! Mostly because we rented these recyclable plastic boxes designed for moving, and we only had them for a week. It sounded like a great idea at first, better for the environment and don't have to worry about tape and all that stuff....but after experiencing that, I would not recommend it. The movers actually don't like them, they are heavy and the time constraints were just stressful. At least we got it all done fast and I love my new place. I finally get my own studio space separate from the living room and lots of sunlight. My cats love it too.

That weekend right after, we drove to Monterey and did our ocean dives and got our certification! It was FREEZING cold, but we were glad we got it done in time for a trip to Mexico where the dives were amazing! Below are a few sketches while we were in Monterey.

As soon as I got back from Monterey, I jumped right back into finishing Leo's Ball. I painted day and night to make my deadline, and I think I broke a record even! 8 spreads/16 pages in 2 weeks, plus scanning and editing too! Heres a sneak peak and a wip:

The back to back work schedule for months on end was soul crushing. Looking back, I am very proud I did so much in the last 4 months. Though there was a downside, I got sick twice, constantly stressed and I was absolutely burnt out at the end of it. I'm still currently trying to get myself out of it. Been feeling a bit stuck creatively. I am a very lucky women to have my husband to be there for me, I honestly don't know how I would make it without him.

For 2015, I definitely need to say no to projects sometimes and really carve out some "me" time. To play and have fun with my work again, to live life and let it inspire my work, to enjoy my time with my friends and family.

At least out of this overworked tunnel was a light! It was Mexico! My husband and I finally got to relax and enjoy the sun and beach for a few day, did a lot of diving and visited ruins. It was a lovely vacation and I was glad I got to unplug for a little bit. Here are a few sketches I did there:

Painted this old man on the plane back to SF, but had to stop because of turbulence. That was seriously the bumpiest plane ride I ever had! At least we arrived safely and early too. Now, its back to reality, got to work on alternations on 2 different books and get ready to meet my students this week.

15. Demos this Fall Semester

Catching up on posting here, below are some demos I did over the last month:

Subbed for a class where the in-class assignment was caricatures. After showing examples from amazing artists like: David Levine, Jason Seiler, Ricardo Martinez, Steve Brodner & Tim Bower. I handed out mirrors for all the students to do a self-caricature. I did one too!

A step by step landscape demo I showed my watercolor students:

Another landscape:

Subbed for another class, where I took the students out for their first plein air painting! We went to Huntington park near Grace Cathedral.

16. November already?

Phew, time just flies on by! It's mid November already. Work has been crazy! Juggling teaching, finishing painting "Leo's Ball" a sequel to "Leo's Job", painting a set of Fuzzball emojis, worked on an exciting but secret project, preparing for Holiday SF Bazaar, planning for a move and a trip etc etc..... I've never been so burnt out! I need to stop saying YES so much. Just need to push through another month! Crossing my fingers I don't get sick!

Meanwhile heres an update on October, it was inktober and I managed to participate 15 out of 31 days. It was a lot of fun, wish I could do more or spend more time in my sketchbook, these definitely revived my love for ink! Here are my ink doodles:

My favorite ink piece, started as a demo for my class, then I just had to finish it.

Finally got a haircut a week ago! :P

Thanks for stopping by, heres a sneak peak of the endpapers of Leo's Ball:

20. Centaur Kid

Just realized, I've never posted this piece here. I did this maybe 1-2 months ago. All digital! Yes, I know, quite unlike me to spend time on a full on digital piece and not paint in watercolor. That's exactly why I decided to do it, its been a quite a while and its time to do some practice.

I loved the way it turned out and really enjoyed painting my character in that lighting. DAPPLE LIGHT IS AWESOME!

21. Long time no post!

oh I know its been forever! Using instagram has just gotten so convenient, sharing on multiple platforms in one click, but I'll still update here every month or so with a longer post.
So what have I been up to lately?

1) Finished teaching summer semester, nice small classes with a group of great students!
Heres some pics of demos and my classes:

Their final projects. They did so well! this is their very first illustration class on their 1st semester!

Heres 60% wip of a Red Panda <3 p="">

I gave this one away to my mother-in-law for her b-day and she loved it!

2) Besides teaching, I've finished all the line drawings for Leo's Ball and is now working on the color studies. It's digital for now, for the speed and flexibility. I'll be using watercolors like the 1st book for the final pieces!

3) And today I'm excited to receive the news that Fuzzball, the kitty character I created (He makes his own rules!) won a contest with Ree! REE is an independent artist friendly emoji platform currently available on iTunes. I'm going to be a featured artist there and I can't wait to paint more Fuzzball!

23. Busy Busy Bee

I know, I know its been awhile...... 2 months! I'm sorry, blogging is just not my thing and the fact that blogspot is not linked with instagram just makes updating harder. If you want to see more frequent updates please follow me on instagram or Tumblr:

Okay so heres what I've been up to the last 2 months:

- My dear friend Erin Fellows gave me this amazing thing!

- Wrapped up teaching for Spring 2014. Heres some progress shot of the last demo I did for the semester:

 - Finished the line drawings for my story "The Night Owl". Now I need to print these out and make a dummy! If you want to see the character designs for these 2 besties, heres the link to a previous blog post: http://isabellakung.blogspot.com/2014/02/my-main-characters-for-my-story.html

-Had a booth with Yuki Yamagata at SF BAZAAR tent in Maker's Fair. Thank you to those who stopped by and said hi!

-Working on the line drawings for the 2nd Leo book! Below is a sneak peak:

Heres a link to the 1st book: http://isabellakung.blogspot.com/2011/11/leos-job-is-out.html. If you are interested in purchasing a copy signed by both the author and I please feel free to email me at [email protected]

Now I'm trying to get as much of my freelance work done before the Summer semester starts, I think I took on too much teaching. Balancing these 2 careers are one of the toughest part of it all, I want to say yes to so many exciting projects, but when I take on too much, my entire life is consumed by work.

Thanks for dropping by!
