When you hear the word cruise, you immediately envision a sense of relaxation, of peace, warm sunshine, cool breezes, exciting cocktails, sarongs and time slowing down.
You can hear the kids giggling as they play and imagine the endless amounts of amazing food and entertainment.
Ok, some parents (insert grin) might also smile in glee at the thought of kids happily entertained in kids clubs so they can enjoy some adult relaxation too like restaurant eating and deck lounging with a good book, going to the gym, walking about deck, having a nap without, "Hey mum, mum can you, mum look at, mum she hit me... every 3 seconds haha!!
Going on a cruise is like the ultimate family holiday I am sure, something for everyone packaged into a really safe way to travel where everything is taken care of for you, you don;t have to worry, you don't have to cook, you don't have to wash up, you don't have to rush, you can de-stress.
3 years ago we went on a holiday to spend some time with family on the opposite end of the country, and this was wonderful but this also involved for me as a single mother, a 2 hour car trip at very, very early hours of the morning, then airport navigation carrying a little one on one hip and one hand on another one and organising tickets, luggage, drinks, snacks, kids entertainments, jackets, shoes, toilet stops, Then a long flight with one child screaming for at least 40 minutes, both getting restless, one putting stickers on the sleeping man next to me, frequent toilet visits in that cramped space, drinks spilt, that was followed by another 5 hour drive to our destination which involved about 2 hours of crying from a fed up toddler, a few lovely days spent with family before doing it all in reverse but throwing in a flight change and a 30 minute window to dash from one connecting plane to another and onto a final plane with no entrainment causing cross kids and then waking up kids to get them off planes and drag them on another road trip home after so much rushing about already. I came home stressed, delighted to have spent time with my family, but stressed and realising wow, travelling with young kids is full on...
This is why honestly, myself, my kids and my mother are planning on taking a cruise ourselves soon as my kids next big holiday experience, I think travel wise it is going to be a holiday we can actually relax on and it leaves from Sydney which is just a short flight away! Yay
I know from friends that have done them with kids that a cruise is going to be perfect and is one where we can spend time just laughing, eating, having fun and relishing the moments. Where the kids are completely catered for and have the best time, which means happy kids = relaxed mum!
Going on a cruise.
It feels like the perfect holiday already, but imagine combining all of that with the utter thrill of a celebrity chef restaurant experience too...
where do I sign up???YES, that's right.
As if going on a cruise wasn't enough fun already now, with
cruise agency you can actually book into a celebrity chef restaurant experience while on your cruise!
Food is one of the biggest memories you take away from you when you travel.
I have often heard it said that one of the things people tend to remember most when they go on holiday, travel is the food.
I absolutely love the idea of not just enjoying a family holiday but having something like this to look forward as a special highlight, imagine, Jamie O's Italian food!!
I'm hungry just thinking about it!
Have you been on a cruise?

Every year it always feels like Summer and Christmas and all things happiness when cherries start to appear in the shops. The little, pretty red balls are such a refreshing dash of flavour and colour.
And nothing makes it feel quite like Summertime than beautiful ice cream.
This year my first new ice cream recipe for the Summery, Christmas season involved not just cherries but an ingredient that flavour wise matched them perfectly, a beautiful, creamy yoghurt I had not tried before
CapriLac Goat Yoghurt.

This yoghurt is lovely and creamy and the natural flavour has just the right amount of tartness to make it a fantastic ingredient to work with. Goat yoghurt is said to be much better tolerated by a lot of people in regards to digestion as a healthy alternative that is easy to digest and can reduce tummy bloating (and all girls want that in the Summertime!).
It has the beneficial live and active cultures and the CapriLac brand is preservative free and naturally A2 and gluten free.
Found in Coles and Woolworths makes it readily available for families and it turned out to be popular with my kids too!
Cherry Bomb Goat Yoghurt Ice-creams
1 & 1/2 cups cherries pitted. (Can use frozen too)
1/4 frozen cherries.
2 tablespoons raw honey
2 teaspoons organic vanilla paste
paddle pop sticks (food quality)
Method
- Divide the yoghurt in half.
- Prepare mold suitable for ice creams, (even plastic cups are fine)
- In a blender combine one half the yoghurt with the honey and vanilla. Blend well, set aside.
- Blend the other half the yoghurt with the cherries.
- In the molds pour a layer of the dark yoghurt mixture and drop some frozen cherry pieces in.
- Top with the opposing coloured layer and keep going until the container is full.
- Use the pop stick to very gently swirl the two colours lightly together - only just!
Freeze covered with cling wrap or a cover like 4Myearth until frozen.
About 10 minutes in or when just starting to freeze add the pop sticks in, (they should stand up ok in the mixture by themselves).
Run under warm water on the outside to loosen, remove and enjoy!
Notes
- To get a more jazzy and defined look freeze the separate colours one at a time and store the mixtures in the fridge. This will take some time but does look fantastic.
- You can add sweetener to taste for either layer as desired like raw honey, stevia, maple syrup, rice malt syrup.
- Try and add frozen cherry pieces in as well as they give a lovely texture contrast.
Toddler Tips
- Adjust to your child's preferred sweetness tastes. I find with little kids that the less sweeteners you use when young the less they need, give them a chance to taste sweet and tart foods with little added sweetener and then adjust from there as needed.

Strawberry Spring TrifleClear blue skies, cool ocean water and gardens coming alive everywhere. Spring in Qld is one of my favourite times of year.It also happens to be when beautiful local strawberries are in abundance, one of my absolute favourite of fruits. As an local and healthy food blogger and as an ambassador for the new Nutworks Gourmet Sprinkles range found in Woolworths I couldn't wait to create a recipe that tasted and looked like Spring. This trifle is just bursting with strawberry flavour and creamy Maleny Dairies real cream. The Nutworks Sprinkles add such an amazing crunch and hit of flavour tie-ing it all together so well.
Ingredients
- You will need a trifle jar.
- 2 x container's of Maleny Dairies real cream. (Or equivalent if you cannot get this cream where
- you are - its just my favourite! You can also use coconut cream for a paleo/vegan version)
- 1 x 250 gm punnet strawberries, washed, stems removed, cut in halves and frozen.
- 1 x 250 gm punnet strawberries, washed stems removed and kept fresh.
- 1 x packet Nutworks Gourmet Sprinkles - Raspberry Crumble Boost.
- 2 teaspoons organic vanilla paste/drops
- 1 teaspoon coconut sugar (opitonal)
- Shredded coconut
- Edible flowers and extra strawberries (whole) to serve
Method
- Blitz together half and half cream and frozen strawberries. I used one container Maleny Dairies Cream and the equivalent in Strawberries. It should be lovely and thick and tangy and a nice pink colour. Set aside in the fridge.
- Whip the second container if cream with the vanilla and optional coconut sugar.
- In your trifle bowl spread a layer of the whipped cream, top with sliced strawberries, then a layer of sprinkles, then a layer of the strawberry cream, then a layer of coconut then strawberries and then back to the cream and continue until the bowl is almost full.
- On the very top spoon a layer of whipped cream and form a peak in the centre.
- Cover with sliced strawberries and coconut and then generously cover in the sprinkles and top with 2 - 3 fresh whole strawberries.
- Chill for at least 30 minutes and serve!

White Wines for Cooking
When gathering together ingredients, spices, and sauces to cook most people tend to think of wine, but seldom which type of wine is the best to use. Red or white, dry or fruity, there are a number of different types of wines you can choose from, each of which will go best with a particular type of dish. If you’re looking to cook with a dry white wine and are wondering what types of dishes and varietals will work best, here are some options for you to choose from.
Dry, Crisp White Wine
By far the most versatile white wine and the easiest to cook with is
a dry and crisp one, such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc or Unoaked Chardonnay. Each one of these wines brings its own unique set of flavours to the table. Pinot Grigio tends to be quite neutral (not too sweet, rich, or acidic), making it the best to keep in the kitchen for general use. Sauvignon Blanc has the highest level of acidity which works especially well with richer seafoods, such as scallops. Chardonnay is by far the richest of the three, and is best used with white meats and cream sauces.
White Sherry
Another good option for cooking wine is white Sherry, which is an extremely versatile tipple in the kitchen, whether you’re deglazing, adding depth to a sauce, or simply looking for something to serve alongside an appetizer like oysters, clams, or mussels white sherry is good choice.
Sparkling Wine and Champagne
White wine is well known for making a perfect mignonette to serve with your oysters, but it can also be used in a pinch as a replacement for white wine, especially for use in beurre blanc.
Alcohol Content
An important thing to keep in mind when choosing any of your cooking wines is the alcohol content, which you want to keep low to moderate—look for wines with 10 to 13 percent alcohol content. The problem with picking wines with a high alcohol content is that the goal of cooking with wine is to allow it to reduce and add a tenderizing brightness to your dish. Whatever you’re making for your next meal, consider adding a bit of flavour with a dash of white wine.

Sprinkle up your taste buds
As a food blogger, recipe developer and local food ambassador I am so excited about the NEW Gourmet Sprinkle range from Nutworks found in Queensland Woolworths Stores Stores and made right here on the Sunshine Coast. Nutworks have brought me on board to promote this delicious new product range.
This Sprinkles range has me excited. Nutworks are well known for having natural and healthy high quality ingredients and with these products even the simplest dish can become extraordinary from just one of these packets of flavour.
For example my Savoury Smokey Zucchini Herb Muffins with cream cheese frosting came alive with the Gourmet Sprinkles. Just by adding the Nutworks Texas Smoked Sprinkles the muffins have instant wow factor.
RECIPE >>> CLICK HERE
The Gourmet Sprinkle Range has been a conceptual idea for some time. In 2013 Nutworks created the original flavours and held a focus group for invited foodie and local business guests to come and taste the original and first trials of these sprinkles. The sprinkles were well received. Over the next year and a half the recipes were refined, trialled and improved. At the same time Nutworks team were pitching the concept to the market. Finally at the end of 2014 the Gourmet Sprinkle Range was accepted as part of a 1 year contract into selected Queensland Woolworths Stores. An exciting development for local food on the Sunshine Coast indeed.
What I absolutely love about the Gourmet Sprinkles range is how they not only taste sensational but how healthy they are for you as well.
Nuts are very important in a well-rounded diet. The diversity of flavours within the sprinkle range ensures that there is an opportunity at every meal to get the recommended serve of nuts for your daily intake. Research shows that nuts reduce your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and can help with weight management.
And these ranges are just using natural ingredients and spices to create outstanding flavours.
Sprinkles are perfect for busy multi-tasking mums and families. Great for creating an outstanding dish for a dinner party, an event or just delicious family dinners without all the hassle of trying to perfect flavour combinations and spending heaps of time in the kitchen.
With flavour ranges of:
SAVOURY
· Texas Smoked Almond
· Asian Cashew
· Mushroom, Rosemary Walnut
· Lime Pepper Cashew
SWEET
· Banana Coconut Boost
· Raspberry Crumble Boost
· Lime Coconut Boost
· Apple and Cinnamon Boost
The Sprinkles Gourmet Range has a flavour combo to make any meal or snack outstanding.
I am really looking forward to working with Nutworks, a local food producer that I love to promote this range and craft some stunning recipes around them so stay tuned to the blog, newsletter and facebook and Instagram for more information and recipes!!

Disney Product Talk Draft
Story Telling is a magical part of life.
From a very young age children look on in awe at the stories and characters that unfold before them in books. They meet fairies, princesses and dinosaurs from the comfort of their own home and in the safety of mum or dads arms.
As the stories unfold they learn about believing in themselves, being a true friend and overcoming obstacles to reach their happy ending. Morals of stories stay with us through our life, which is why all cultures, all over the world have always enriched their children lives with story telling.
As we have just started our book week here, my house is full of excitement over books and characters and dress-ups for school parade and it is so wonderful to see kids interested in books and story telling. It warms an author’s heart!
Which is also why as an author and as a mum I am very excited about the new Disney Junior’s once upon a time story telling series.
“Disney Junior’s The Book of Once Upon A Time” is a locally-produced, interactive story-telling series hosted by Australian actor and playwright Kate Mulvany. Tune in for a story every day at 7:10pm on Disney Junior The Channel (Channel 709 for Foxtel subscribers), or anytime on the website
The second season of “Disney Junior’s The Book of Once Upon A Time” will launch in Book Weekon Monday 24th August with “Snow White and the Great Jewel Hunt”. (I know, awesome timing right??)
Later episodes will include new Disney stories from “Winnie the Pooh”, “Aladdin”, “Sleeping Beauty” and EVEN “Frozen”!!! I can hear my two girls screaming now!!

And one of the most exciting features as well is how it is set up so that it is easy for parents to make storytelling part of children’s bedtime ritual because Disney Junior invites parents to settle down and share a magical moment with their little one every evening on Disney Junior around bedtime.
Then the “Land of Once Upon A Time” lullaby follows each episode, encouraging children to prepare for bedtime.
I can’t wait to try this out with my youngest.
I love that this helps busy parents establish that beautiful calming and enriching night time routine, let’s face it we just don’t all have the time to go to the library all the time and select and read through first appropriate books and then establish a routine.
The Disney Story room is such a great, easy way for parents to bring that routine into their children’s lives and calm them down for bed time at the same time, all the hard work is done, you just get to enjoy this quality time with your kids and then let them drift off to sleep with a mind full of wonder.
Check out the Disney Story Room HERE
The Book of Once Upon A Time features Disney stories that are available as eBooks from the Disney Story Central app, available to download from iTunes

Chocolate love with good for you,
Superfood Chocolate Fruit & Nut bars.Once you start making your own raw chocolate there is just so many combinations you can make. One of my favourite is a healthier twist on the classic fruit and nut bars.
Simple. Healthy. Delicious.
Ingredients1 cup coconut oil, runny room temperature
1 cup organic rice malt syrup (I often use less as we don't like it too sweet)
6 tablespoons cacao powder
2 heaped tablespoons
Nutra Organics Super Greens Plus Reds (oh yeah all that goodness! Optional)
2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste
*1/2 teaspoon pink himalayn salt
*1/2 cup peanut or macadamia butter
*1/2 cup sunflower seeds
*1/2 organic raisins
*1/2 cup walnuts
*1/4 sultannas
*1/4 cup macadamias
*1/4 cup goji berries
Now my biggest TIP is you want your coconut oil but for the best consistency when mixing for a smooth chocolate I put mine in a bowl and place in the fridge for about 10 minutes or so until it is just crystallizing around the edges, when it reaches this point it will blend with the other ingredients beautifully with a wooden spoon, no fancy equipment needed.
Mix the coconut oil and rice malt together well.
Then add cacao and greens powder, salt, then the nut paste.
Mix together very well.
Stir in all the nuts, seeds and dried fruit, stir through.
Line a baking tray or dish with baking powder.
Pour the chocolate mixture into the tray, smooth down.
Place in the fridge until set, (usually at least 3 hours depending on the thickness you make it), remove, slice up into chocolate bar shapes on a chopping board, place in a sealed container and store in the fridge ready to eat!
I do recommend putting on a high shelf otherwise your kids will slowly but surely shorten your supply when you are not looking! Haha ;P
If you are REALLY desperate for a choccy fix, (like need right now) and I "may" have done this, you can set it super fast in the freezer hehehe!
Bek Xx
How exciting is it when something really healthy for you tastes like pure indulgence?
Really good right?
With an abundance of such stunning fresh strawberries on the Sunshine Coast this time of year and always having a love of chocolate, this smoothie to me is just soooo good it is almost addictive!
Chocolate Strawberry Smoothies
Ingredients
(per smoothie - if using a large blender to make multiple adjust quantity to suit.)
1 cup of washed, fresh and really ripe strawberries.
1/2 cup spinach
1/4 cup kale
1/4 cup chopped celery
1 heaped tablespoon cacao
1 teaspoon raw honey (optional)
1 cup almond milk (or favourite alternative)
1 frozen banana for creaminess (optional you can leave out.)
1 teaspoon super greens powder (optional)
Extra cacao to sprinkle on top.
Extra strawberries for serving.
Ice if desired.
Method.
Blitz all the ingredients in a high powered blender or nutrabullet.
Serve in a tall glass.
Sprinkle with cacao powder and sliced strawberries on the glass.
Enjoy!!
Notes
You can of course add a good quality protein powder and even some oats if you ant a really dense smoothie for say after the gym.
Strawberries are an excellent source of Vitamin C and manganese and are said to have many health benefits including anti inflammatory and anti cancer properties, and people that eat them, fairly often are said to have decreased cardiovascular disease risk
Kid Tips
Kids love this one, the sweetness and colour from the ripe seasonal strawberries makes it such a hit!
It has been a long running inside joke in my family that I should open a muffin shop. I seem to be always making muffins and crafting new ones. There is something so wonderfully comforting and exciting about a muffin all at the same time, and the flavour possibilities are pretty much only as endless as your imagination!
What is not to love??
When Nutworks told me about their exciting new Gourmet Sprinkles range I was excited to try it, even more so when I started tasting the flavour combinations they had come up with. I have long been a fan of their products and natural ingredients.
In fact when you read the back of these sprinkles, their is not an additive or preservative in sight.
Nothing quite dresses a muffin up more than a whipped topping and a pop of crunch and flavour on top. Well these handy packets take all the guess work and prep work out as they are ready to snip and go.
As a busy mum, I really like that!!
When I tasted their Texas smoked my mind flew to paprika and smokey flavours and cream cheese so I crafted these muffins around my daydreaming taste buds. I hope you like them as much as I enjoyed making them!
Bek xoxo

Nutworks Texas Smoked Sprinkles. (Find me at woolworths.)

Whisk eggs and oil together in a large bowl.
Sprinkle in some salt and add into this mixture the cheese, ham, zucchini, pepita, paprika, sun-dried tomato and spinach and some of the water.
Gently fold the flour through the wet mixture, add a little extra water from the cup of water as needed. Mixture should be reasonably runny, easy to stir texture.

Bake for around 20 minutes or until golden on top.
Remove from heat and allow to cool on a wire rack.
Whip the cream cheese with an electric beater/mixer with the lemon juice and nice and smooth and a little fluffy. Adjust amount of lemon to taste. You can use just a hint and replace with water.

Enjoy!!

Zucchini and Chia seed, Moist Chocolate cake A chocolate cake with some added goodness x
A beautiful, moist chocolate cake (with added goodness).
Most of us love a chocolate cake and if you are going to have a chocolate cake why not have one with some goodness inside!
Ingredients- 125g butter
- 1 cup coconut or organic raw sugar (Or swap for stevia)
- 1 tsp good vanilla
- 200g dark chocolate, chopped
- 3 tbsp chia seeds
- 2 cups zucchini finely grated
- 4 free range eggs
- 1 cup almond meal
- 2 cups organic self raising flour, OR wholemeal spelt with 2 teaspoons baking powder or gluten free self raising flour.
- 1-2 cups whipped cream
- jam (I use homemade or sugar free)
- walnuts
- fresh strawberries to serve
Method- Pre heat oven to 180`c
- Grease and line with baking paper 2 x 20 cm cake tins
- Gently melt chocolate and butter
- Combine chocolate butter mixture in a bowl with the sugar
- Add in vanilla essence, eggs
- Mix in almond meal and flour, mix together well
- Fold in zucchini and chia seeds
- Pour mixture into lined tins
- Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until springs back when touched
- Turn both cakes onto a wire rack to cool
- Once cold place one cake onto a dish, spread with a generous layer of rosella conserve and then a layer of whipped cream and some sliced fresh strawberries
- Assemble second cake on top (arrange it flat bottom on top for a neater topped cake), top with whipped cream and decorate with walnuts and fresh strawberries
- Enjoy!
Notes- Use milk chocolate for a milder version
- Leave the cream out and instead make and use a dark chocolate icing in its place
- Squash can be used in place of zucchini if you find you have lots of them growing in your garden!
- Swap walnuts for more fresh fruit or even choc chips!
- Use wholemeal spelt flour – this does make the cake heavier so I recommend adding in some vanilla yogurt if you use any type of wholemeal flour

Introducing a NEW segment on the blog >>>> BOOKCLUB!!
This is NEW and a great way to not only find out about great new books out there but ALSO to support our amazing authors!
As an author myself I just love to meet and support other authors.
As an avid reader I also know how a great book can steal your heart, take your sleep, run you through all your emotions and leave you with a book hangover...
A love of reading is a life skill to treasure forever.
If you don't love reading, I say you just haven't tried the right book for you yet!
This week I am delving into the some adrenaline rushing, (note to self - don't read late at night or you wont sleep), reading of new Qld author JM Peace's thrilling new crime release, A Time To Run.

Before having children I loved a good horror or thriller. I had long exhausted Steven King, Dean R Koontz, Clive Barker...since becoming a mum a well written and fast paced scary book has taken the adrenaline rush to a whole new level so it is something I only do on the odd occasion now!Not only was I incredibly excited when I learned my amazing friend JM Peace was having her first book published but when I read the start of A Time To Run, I knew it was going to be one of those occasions. One of those books on the HAVE TO READ pile.
And so it has been. Gripping, fast paced, and intelligent with a main character you take to right away.
A Time To Run is written by police officer and busy mum turned writer JM Peace who I have interviewed for you with my first bookclub post!Q. Jay, you are an incredibly strong woman and inspiring role model for women, first as a police officer and now as a published author. You book's main character is a strong woman and you yourself have a daughter, what piece of advice would you give to mums of young girls hoping to raise strong women?
A. 'Be brave. I don't mean wrestling crocodiles or disarming bombs, but do the things that make you apprehensive or nervous. Just have a red-hot go at whatever comes your way. Don't be scared to fail. Failure doesn't mean the end. And let your children see this. Regardless if you succeed or fail - most of all, let them see you try.'
Q. You juggle writing with work, two active children and running a household. How do you manage to keep all the balls in the air?
A. I think I’ve become quite good at time management. I try to be organised and ready ahead of time. My mother is a very efficient and practical person and I think I learnt a lot from her.
Also, as the writer side of things has started to take off, I pretty much watch no TV. The evenings after the kids are in bed are when I get most of my writing done. So although I enjoy TV and movies, I’ve set my priorities and stick with it. It’s important to me, so I find the motivation because I want to.
Q. What do your children think about you being a police officer? Or a writer?
A. My kids have always been proud of the fact that mummy is a police officer. All their school friends know, kids often run up to me in the school yard (I never go to the school in uniform) and ask “Are you really a police officer?” As far as I can tell, there has been nothing negative for them having a cop as a parent. I am very alert to the fact that this will change at some point.
The kids are only just starting to grasp the whole writer thing in the last few weeks – firstly, once they could hold a copy in their hands and secondly, now that I have appeared a couple of times in the local media. My son has apparently told his class that I am famous. Hmm.
Q. What made you start writing now?
A. I decided I no longer wanted to be a police officer. I gave a lot of thought on what I should do, such as going back to Uni, and eventually decided I should try to do exactly what I had always wanted to do – be a writer.
One of the reasons I chose writing is it was potentially something I could do from home, setting my own hours. I try to make my family my priority and I don’t like missing events in my childrens’ lives. Although they may seem like little things, they are so important to the kids at the time and you just can’t get those moments back. It’s tricky trying to tick all the boxes as a working mum.
You can find A Time To Run in all good Australian bookstores.FIND JM PEACE on Facebook HEREThank you for your time Jay, and for the sleepless nights and pondering of visiting Bunnings to buy much bigger deadlocks for my doors now hahaha!!
But seriously, congratulations on such a well crafted book, it is exciting to read and I know you are going to really quickly find an avid fan base following and be the next big writing thing!
NOTE of interest: Jm Peace is the author's pseudonym who is still a current serving police officer in Queensland.
Which only adds to the magnificent mystery and excitement of the book!!Want to JOIN IN THE FUN of the book club??

I love to garden, I love to grow things, I love adorning my house with bowls of fresh fruit that look gorgeous and the kids can help themselves too.
Living in Qld though, insects are a part of daily life, Think ants, stick insects that make you jump a foot in the air they are that big, spiders **shudders**,
mosquitos, cockroaches and having big bowls of fruit in the house, fruit growing in the garden and compost bins means you have to deal with the dreaded, FRUIT FLY...
Nothing ruins that dazzling, gorgeous fruit bowl on display in your kitchen quicker that these tiny little flying dots of havoc....
I have been through humid Summer's where it has been optimum conditions for them and they have grown to plague proportions....They can feel nearly impossible to get rid of sometimes and nearly drive you to drink as they wither and ruin beautiful fruit. Especially when it is growing beautiful and organically in the garden!
But you can take offensive action! Oh yes, feel like the sniper of the veggie patch and arm yourself with some tricks of your own to outwit these tiny little flecks of fruit doom.
TOP TIPS for dealing with pesky Fruit Fly
Even though we are in Winter here and fruit fly are at their most annoying in the heat, they can still be a right pest, so it is a great time now to get into some good habits and proactive action.
- Be vigilant in the garden about picking up fallen/rotten fruit. I swear they can smell this stuff from the other side of Australia.
- Even though of around 200 species of fruit fly only 2 are said to be a problem for home gardeners one of these is a particular pest in Qld, where I live and is usually found around plants like tomatoes, bananas (oh how they love to ruin my bananas in the house!), citrus or all kinds, guavas, eggplant (weird I know right?), pears, stone fruit, apple, capsicum, avocados and they just have massive rave parties with mangoes!! So with these plants try and keep their area as "clean" as possible.
- Use very specific "bags" to cover fruit you really want to protect in your garden. Ask at your local nursery.
- Companion plant as much as possible. Many strong smelling herbs and plants work as excellent garden "friends" helping to hide the scent of other tasty varieties, like basil with tomatoes. Not full proof by any means but it does help!

- Fruit fly are said to in particular really dislike Rue. Plant some in your orchid, grow some in the garden, put it in a vase near your fruit bowl if you like!
- Cover fruit bowls with some sort of light covering inside like cheesecloth, mosquito netting. not super attractive but after a couple of days if your kitchen is also super clean they will dissipate and look elsewhere.
- Trap them!
You will find an ENORMOUS variety of fruit fly home made traps on the internet and by asking around neighbours and farmers but you know what?
The simplest have been to me over the years the very best.
This is my ever trusty go to fruit fly trap. It works and you can whip it together with what you have around the house!
Bek's Super Simple Fruit Fly Trap in a Jar
You will need:
1 jar
1 piece of paper
1 chunk of banana or apple or pineapple etc
splash of vinegar (I used apple cider)
sticky tape.
First clean down your kitchen, all surfaces and make sure all dishes are dried and put away, all fruit bowls checked for suspect fruit etc.
Cover remaining fruit bowls after swooshing away fruit flys with some sort of netting to keep them off for a day or so.
Take you jar, place a chunk of fruit in there and a splash of vinegar.
Roll the paper into a tunnel with a tiny end and a large moth end.
Put it tiny end down into the jar.
Tape the paper funnel into place so you dont have escape holes.
Place it near the fruit or area you were finding them leave for a day or so.
Wallah!
NOTE: make sure to keep the area very clean and fruit covered so they all are left with the trap as most attractive option.
I am a firm believer in living 80/20 or 90/10. Doing the best we can, eating, drinking, cleaning, having the most eco options out there for the most of the time for the healthiest life we can.
I am also as someone who does a LOT of cooking, cooking demonstrations, catering gigs an absolute freaker over cockroaches. Esp living in Qld where they are everywhere, in every house and as big as birds (ok maybe that was a slight exaggeration) but they are just nasty, evil arch enemies of chefs and home cooks everywhere so I have to be completely honest and tell you, while I do use natural pest control in my veggie gardens and things I do use cockroach bait in my house sometimes. Yes, I do!!
Are you an ECO warrior or a 80/20 healthy living mum? What is one none eco thing you NEED to use/have?

This recipes was my favourite of the three I demonstrated with the help of amazing little chef volunteers at the
Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show this year.
All the fruit & Yoghurt Biscuit Trifles at the show where made with stunning local produce from
Jeffers Market if your on the Sunshine Coast or visit this way ever - you NEED to go and check out Jeffers!
I love this recipe so much and I wanted to demonstrate just how easy and simple it can be to make something AMAZING and healthy for the lunch box that kids really will demolish and better yet can even make themselves for their own lunchbox the night before! Oh yeah! Less work for us mums!!
And one of the greatest things about this recipe is you can use whatever fruit is in season right now, whatever fruit is on special or locally grown and beautiful and whatever fruit your kids like and each child can make theirs with their favourites!
What you need
- A nice clean jar with a good sealing lid.
- Yoghurt of choice. I like Maleny dairies, Jalna, Qld Yoghurt and Five AM. (Not paid to say that). For all the ones made at the show and the one pictured here I used Maleny Dairies yoghurt.
- Assorted fresh fruit, think things like blueberries, strawberries, rock melon, kiwi fruit, watermelon, passionfruit, pineapple, paw paw grapes and whatever is in season and tastes great in your area.
- A nice healthy biscuit. Homemade is best or look for one that is gluten free and refined sugar free.
- Spoon to pack with it!
Method
- Prepare all the fruit you will be using.
- Make sure jar is squeaky clean.
- Get the kids to assemble a generous layer of yoghurt.
- Top with lashing of beautiful fresh fruit.
- Place biscuit in a paper bag and smash until it resembles crumbles.
- Sprinkle biscuit crumbs on top.
- Seal and pack with an ice pack for an exciting morning tea!
Simple. Delicious, Budget Friendly, Healthy. Notes
- For dairy free use coconut yoghurt or soy yoghurt.
- You can either create just like this OR do it in layers like a real trifle, starting with a biscuit base, then yoghurt, then fruit, then biscuit, then yoghurt then fruit etc.

Silverbeet and Kale Feta Rolls
I love packing my kids full of greens.
Right from babies I have got them growing their own in our garden and in pots, greens are just so versatile in cooking and so incredibly jam packed full of nutrients. In face when you look at eating styles and trends there is always one constant in them all!
Eat more green leafy things!!
Paleo, Vegan, Raw, Low Carb, Michelle Bridges 12 week boot camps they all seem to agree green leafy things are especially good for humans!
So as a mum I have always given my two girls lots of greens and found so many delicious and clever ways to feed them to them! Because, lets face it too not too many toddlers are going to eat a pile of lightly steemed spinach quite joyously?
One of my kids FAVE ways to get a big greens fix and a recipe that I LOVE to make for LUNCHBOXES is this super easy and cheap to make,
Silverbeet and Kale Feta Rolls.
Why Kale?
I know it has become trendy of late and sometimes you might think oh kale this and kale that....BUT it is for a very good reason!
Kale is a
sensational power vegetable and was in fact a very popular vegetable in the middle ages and is a popular food source in many, many parts of the world. During World War II it was also in the Dig for Victory imitative in the UK because of its nutrient content, where everyone was encouraged to grow it in there gardens.
Kale is extremely good for you and is a source of beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, copper, vitamin B6, and rich in calcium and according to *Mind, Body Green has more iron per calorie than beef.
It is also a source of two carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin and has other properties which are said to have anti cancer and DNA repair in cells properties.and the combination with fresh basil and a great Parmesan and feta is beautiful.

Kale (Brassica Oleracea) is a green leafy vegetable considered to be one of the highest in nutrients with many health benefits including it is said, to have anti – cancer effects so it is well worth tracking down or growing your own. There are
many varieties available now including beautiful pruprle leafed types
and it is also excellent in things like juicing,
green smoothies, all kinds of fresh
salads,
spinach and kale cheesey scrambled eggs and often made into kale “chips”. I also put it fresh, shredded in my kids wraps.
It is also extremely EASY to grow!
Look out for organic seeds or seedlings and grow it in a really nice sunny spot (at least 6 hours), in good compost rich soil with plenty of organic matter and good drainage. Water deeply once established to promote a healthy root system and feed with diluted seasol once a week as a baby and then every 2 weeks once established. Harvest as a whole plant or just the leaves you need as you need them.
Grow them amongst marigolds, chives, spring onions, sage, thyme for companion planting.
If your worried you will plant and "forget" and they will die, plant a pot near your front door, amongst your flowers, somewhere were you will see them everyday and remember to water them.
I know for me I love taking 5 minutes of peace in the garden of an afternoon or early morning to have a cup of tea and water, it is actually very relaxing!

Silverbeet and Kale Feta Rolls Recipe
Ingredients- 2 cups fresh silverbeet finely chopped and firmly packed in (or 1 pkt frozen spinach, thawed and drained well will also work fine)
- 1 cup fresh kale, washed and finely chopped. (You can find in Coles and Woolies now or farmers markets and places like Jeffers market on the Sunshine Coast.)
- 3/4 of a 250g pkt feta cheese. (You can use less if you find feta too salty for your palate or more see notes).
- ¾ cup grated cheese.
- 2 sheets puff pastry ( I use butter puff pastry or wholegrain when I can find it and sometimes gluten free puff pastry)
Method- Pre heat oven to approximately 180`c.
- Combine spinach, kale, feta and grated cheese together.
- Semi defrost pastry sheets.
- Cut each pastry sheets in half to make two long rectangle.
- Line each one down one side with a long strip of the mixture.
- Pinch the two sides of pastry together right along both sides to make it an enclosed ‘parcel’ or roll over on to itself to make a roll shape.
- Chop up into desired sizing rolls.
- Brush top of pastry with milk.
- Bake them in the oven on baking paper until golden and pastry is visibly cooked.
- Serve hot with fresh salad
Notes- For a more ‘adult’ version you can add lightly sautéed onion, chilli or spring onion.
- Perfect for school lunch boxes.
- Freeze rolls before cooking for ready to go meals and lunches
- Adjust the amount of feta to you and your kids taste buds. Use a lot less if you generally find it too salty and more if you like a strong feta flavour. I find in general kids do not like a too strong feta flavour but rather just a hint of feta so I often will use 3/4 of a packet, depending on the amount of greens. I would suggest the first few time you make the recipe to tweak to make it with a 3/4 packet and then tweak if needed the next time. I prefer to use a Australian hard feta and just crumble it.
Toddler Tips- Make them half the size again so they are handy toddler sized sausage rolls.
- Serve with a toddler friendly salad of things like cheese cubes, avocado cubes, cherry tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, capsicum slices and carrot sticks.

FUTURO review and my personal health toolkit.
When you become a mum you sacrifice, you give, and you do everything in your power to raise healthy, happy and protected children.
And then you get a bit older and things start to weaken or show wear and tear or maybe even illness or disease strikes and you realise how little effort you may have been putting into looking after YOU as well.
Now when you have medical issues I think you can either become a sufferer or a doer, just like the glass half full scenario. I have decided to be a doer and find the best ways to help me and my body, as it is after all my only body, to better cope with life and live a long, healthy, happy one.

There is just something about the old classic, the pasta bake...
It instantly reminds me of my mother and dark, rainy nights snuggled in front of a cosy fire when we lived in the country. Happily eating her pasta bakes covered in crochet blankets!
Warm memories.
I love the way food is such an experience that certain foods are linked for us with events and times of our lives. Food really does tell a story and for me the pasta bake was one of my first comfort foods.
Now I make it for my kids too, but with a healthy twist, now we are also not gluten intolerant but I like to do a large amount of our meals and snacks gluten free as I believe it is more kinder on the bowels!!
This dish can be whipped up in not very long at all, it freezes really well and makes fantastic leftovers and school lunches too or a bring a plate dish for the next BBQ!
If you like pasta bake or macaroni cheese you will love this healthy version.
Gluten Free Vegetarian Pasta Bake
Ingredients
- 1 box of gluten free pasta, cooked according to packet directions.
(I also find it helps to add a little dash of oil in the boiling water with gluten free pasta to stop it all sticking together. - 2 tablespoons gluten free flour
- 500ml almond, soy or dairy milk ( I used almond.)
- half a teaspoon nutmeg ground
- 2 teaspoons paprika (look for a really good quality one - it makes a lot of difference!)
- !/2 cup broccoli, very finely chopped.
- 2 carrots peeled and finely grated.
- 4 stalks celery, finely chopped.
- 3 large tomatoes. 2 chopped one sliced.
- 1 zucchini, peeled and grated.
- 1 cup grated cheese.
- Freshly chopped parsley to taste ( I used about a good handful ).
- Fresh and thinly chopped chives to taste. (I used about 9 stalks).
- 2 teaspoons wholegrain mustard (or to taste)
- 1 free range egg.
- 1/4 cup of sundried tomatoes (optional)
- pepper
- himalayan salt - to taste
- 2 cloves garlic finely chopped.

- Cook gluten free pasta according to directions, rinse very lightly and then drained and set aside.
- Very, (extra very for fussy eating kids) chop the broccoli
- Grate the carrot and zucchini.
- Place the vegetables into a mixing bowl or even straight into the baking dish.
- Place the butter into a saucepan and melt slowly over a low heat.
- Once melted add in the flour, stir constantly for 1 minute.
- Add small amounts of the milk stirring the whole time until they are combined with the flour mix, keep doing this until all the milk has been used and it is a nice consistency. Use a whisk of needed to make sure it is nice and smooth.

- Season with the nutmeg, paprika and a pinch of himalayan salt and add in the mustard. Taste.
- Add in the cheese and stir through until melted in. Taste again add more mustard or salt and pepper if needed.
- Let the sauce cool a bit and then whisk in the egg.
- Mix everything together except the sliced tomatoes and a small amount of the chopped mixed herbs.
- Pour into a deep baking dish top with the sliced tomato and some of the fresh herbs.
- Bake at 180' fan forced for 20 minutes or until nice and golden on top.
- Serve on its own as a simple dinner or with a nice fresh salad with a zesty dressing and optional garlic bread for a great tasty meal.
Notes
- This dish is great for leftovers and school lunchboxes.
- Make and freeze ahead for those tired nights.
- Add some chili for more punch.
- Add mushrooms at the last step before cooking.
- For VEGANS, leave out the egg, make the white sauce with olive oil in place of butter and leave out the cheese, add another half cup of milk when making the sauce and instead add savoury yeast flakes for a lovely cheesey flavour.
Toddler/Kids Tips
- Kids love the cheesey flavour. You can make it even stronger my adding a strong flavoured cheese that is suitable or more grated cheese.
- Freeze lunch sized amounts in container for easy lunchboxes and pack on the day with a fresh salad or chopped raw crunchy vegetables.

WATER
Beautiful, life sustaining water.
I think in modern times, and even especially now that healthy eating has become so very in, we often forget the simple things and one of the most important ingredients of all for a healthy, happy life, WATER...
Up to 60% of the human body is water, every cell in our body uses water. We need water to function, to live and yet so many people don't drink enough water! And don't worry for many years that was me too...
More and more studies have been done that show dehydration to be found in almost every known disease to mankind and it also makes almost every illness's symptoms worse.
Think about it, when something is seriously wrong what do they do in hospital? Put you on a drip! Because they know how important proper hydration is.
Last year I read an incredible book on this very subject coming from decades of medical research called, "Your not sick, your dehydrated."
Wow, what an amazing book and eye opening read.
It wasn't long after reading it and being inspired to include much more water into my day that I began to really notice and worry about the chemicals and toxins found in tap water.
I can totally understand why they are in there. Council's have to make sure no moulds, bacteria or anything harmful gets into people's drinking water, no easy feat when it usually comes from lakes and dams I can imagine.
BUT, if I am making all this healthy, chemical free, beautiful food and trying really hard to have a chemical free house then surely these chemicals are counterproductive?
It was right when I was thinking this over and wondering also at the state of the inside also of my rainwater tank which the owner told em he wasn't sure had been ever cleaned (eek, I know right) that I was contacted about reviewing an amazing, high tech, extremely efficient (and complicated) in home water filtration system that conveniently is all inside a handy jug!
It is just the perfect size for a family, would fit into any household and is portable so also very convenient for anyone who is renting.
And while the process it undertakes to clean and energise the water is highly complex, you don't have to do much of anything! (Perfect for a busy mum like me) who has little time for more complicated things in life.
It is even designed into an attractive jug that would not clash with any kitchen decor either for that matter.
Which funnily enough has always been of great importance to me and my kitchen purchases ;)
I also LOVE that the company you buy it from is created by Joanne Musgrave, a certified health coach who uses her own training along with naturopath Julie McNab to offer a range on her website that you know has been really well researched, not just the ingredients but the company itself too and their ethics. What is there is beautiful products and you know you can trust what you find at
Shop Naturally.
Now this means a lot to me, and I really place a lot of value in businesses that take their products and their word on said products seriously. This makes my life so much easier as a shopper and busy mum and also gives me great respect and admiration for their integrity and passion.
I am just delighted to say that Shop Naturally is one such business.
I don't have hours and hours of spare time to research everything, I just don't so when I can trust a beautiful business that makes my life and shopping experiences so much better.
On the Sunshine Coast I have this trust with the Jeffers Market stores where I know Stephen Jeffers would not stock anything he had not extensively researched and now I have it online at Shop Naturally now I have discovered them too.
.JPG)
The water jug I reviewed and fell in love with is called
Waters Co Bio Mineral Pot Ace 1.5L Water Filter Jug
Check out out here
It is 1.5 litre, adds minerals back into your water, has a nine stage filtration system, alkalines the water and filters out chlorine and fluoride.
"
The 9 filtration stages are: prefilter, activated carbon filter medium, ion exchange resin, bio organic alkaline minerals, organic germanium, far infrared and magnets. They filter out chlorine, heavy metals, fluoride, nitrate, odours, sediment, bacteria, cysts & viruses. At the same time, the filtration system adds around 60 bio organic trace minerals & restructures the water molecules to significantly increase cellular hydration, adding 'Ki' (Life energy)." Website quote. It even comes with a PH testing kit, something as a horticulturalist I was very impressed with and interested in.
I have long since suspected the Sunshine Coast water to be acidic and I found out I was right and considering research also sais that cancer can only live in an acid environment I think we all want to improve our bodies PH to be more alkaline and one of the easiest ways to do this is drinking alkaline water everyday.
Improving your hydration and becoming alkaline improves your skin, eyes, hair, weight, mood, bowel movements and is said to be powerful healing for everyone and especially people with auto immune diseases, arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Reactive Arthritis, asthma, chrons, eczema etc etc
Drinking more water always sounds simple but in reality so often ends up being a bit slap dash!!I find this jug not only gives me better tasting water that is so much better for me and my family but it also keeps me accountable too as I know just how many times I should be refilling it and drinking from it for me and my two gorgeous girls everyday!
Thank you goes to
Shop Naturally for this review and for introducing me to an easy way to beautiful, clean, alkaline healing water for me and my children.
Eat Beautiful, Be Active, Live Well, Find Calm AND stay hydrated!

Dinosaur Biscuits
Gluten free, Refined Sugar Free, Egg Free
My little miss 4 is a funny little thing. While she belts out Frozen songs as much at the next girl and does ballet and loves barbie dolls she also absolutely LOVES dinosaurs, dragons, bugs, crocodiles, sharks and trucks and motorbikes.
Myself and my miss 9 often just look at each other mystified as we are both very much girly girls.
Violet's bedroom greets you with dinosaurs and dragons. her favourite colour is green and when she grows up, she wants to be a DRAGON.
Yep.
For her fourth birthday of course it was a Dinosaur Party - you can see the food and party ideas for that one HERE
These biscuits both my 4 and 9 year olds can make and they both love! Though my 9 year old often makes hers with a love heart instead.
Ingredients
100 grams butter
½ cup coconut sugar or Natvia stevia
1 & ¼ cups gluten free plain flour or spelt flour plain – note spelt is not gluten free only low gluten)
1 teaspoon vanilla paste or essence
¼ teaspoon baking powder (gluten free)
3 tablespoons almond, coconut, soy or dairy milk
¼ cup jam with no sugar added. You will find many of these at supermarkets and health food stores.
2 tablespoons water
1 potato
Method
Pre heat oven to 180’c or 160 if it is fan forced.
Line a baking tray with baking paper, I use non bleached If You Care brand.
Heat jam in a saucepan with the water, stir and set aside.
Cut a large potato in half. Then take one half and score/cut a dinosaur shaped foot print into one side so that it sticks out.
Beat butter, sugar and vanilla until it looks fluffy and well together.
Gently fold in the flour and baking powder with a wooden spoon.
Once mixed well roll into small balls and place on the baking tray.
Flatten down slightly.
Use the potato to put a footprint indent into each biscuit.
Fill indents about ½ to ¾ with the jam.
Bake for around 12 minutes or until nice and golden looking and firm.
Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.
Notes
You can of course swap the dinosaur foot print for a love heart, star, circle etc have fun with it!

Dream it. Do it. Do more. I will do.
DO - it's a rather powerful word isn't it?
"Do or do not, there is no try." YodaThe more you do, the more you can do, so the more you do."
The Pram Diet Book, Random House. As 2014 is coming to a close and 2015 is just around the corner we are on the brink of that exciting time of year when we seem to find extra enthusiasm and determination. We set goals and dreams, we often start out the new year wanting to be healthier, fitter and often slimmer!
We think wistfully about sports and dancing done in youth, and ones we would love to try.
We plan on fun runs and marathons in the year ahead, we might decide to take up a sport or active hobby, climb certain mountains, run 5k, beat our own running times - even compete in a sport.
The Australian Institute of Sport has long been a very highly regarded and respected institution and one I really respect; sport and being active is something I personally am very passionate about and think should be heavily encouraged for all children and also parents and adults too, as sport increases our physical activity level in a fun way and makes us healthier people.
Exercise improves your health, helps prevent disease, helps you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, boosts mood, reduces stress, helps ease and prevent depression and has a very important link to reduced Post Natal Depression and also easing PND symptoms. For me exercise was key to getting through and then over my PND, and also boosting my self esteem and confidence and general overall happiness - something so important for us mums.
I also loved the way exercise empowered me and gave me goals and challenged me. I was so proud that I was able to go from not exercising at all, to walking my pram around the block to eventually jogging with the pram 8 km a day! And lost over 30 kilo's in the process.
We all have it in us to be active and find ways of doing it that are fun, exciting and challenging to us.
"DO: MORE is a philosophy, a rallying cry for those who want to devour life and all that it brings. It is a motivator for the doers of this world and a reminder to us all that we should maximize every moment, commit to those things that move us and pursue our passions with an unrelenting hunger." The
I will do campaign is a new and exciting way to help Australians achieve their fitness goals through the help of the Australian Institute of Sports and Rexona sports ambassadors.
In this campaign everyday Australians will have access to information and articles written by the AIS normally only reserved for professional athletes.
Next year, for me,
I will do more by trying a
sports class like either tap dancing or ballroom dancing, or maybe go back to my past love of boxing and taekwondo. Something fun, active, challenging and just for me!
I am planning on pushing myself to do more and have fun doing it too and with tools and tips like the I will do campaign I am sure I will get there!
What is your fitness goals for next year?
What is something you would love to do? Or have done?
Is there a sport you would like to try? Maybe you would love to do a fun run!
Live Well. Be Active. Eat Beautiful, Stay Calm. Be Happy.

Juicing has to be one of the most exciting elements I have added into mine and my children's lives.
I had always heard amazing benefits of juicing and its ability to heal our bodies...but I only ever had the odd juice.
Then one day in a moment that felt like synchronicity during a period of stress an ill health I happened across Joe Cross's documentary,
Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead and the whole world went quiet as I watched. Not something that happens very often when you have 2 kids and one is a young, toddler!
I was just totally captivated and inspired by it.
It was living, filmed proof off the power of juicing for a healthy, happy life.
Not just beautiful, juices are life energy in a glass.
Juicing is this incredible way we can give our bodies amazing healing and heath boosting nutrition in a way our bodies can access incredibly fast with little effort.
What are some of the benefits if juicing?
- Weight loss.
- Increased Energy.
- Immune boosting. Our immune system is our own personal army and defence system, anything we can do to support it and protect it is .
- Drastically increases your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables easily which is always a great thing!
- Liver Cleansing and Support. Your liver is such an important part of your body. Your liver cleans your blood and removes harmful and dangerous toxins from your body, you need it in a really great healthy state. The sad thing is they say it is actually quite common for a large proportion of us all to have fatty deposits and livers not in the best state, and this is not a good thing at all. Plus giving your liver a detox improves general wellbeing and even improves your skin in so many ways and helps skin conditions like acne.
- Lusher hair. Due to all the nutrients it is said that juicing can improve hair growth and condition.
- Digestion. Due to the fact that juicing gives your body a large amount of nutrients while your digestive system has to do little work this is amazing for resting your digestive system and allowing it to heal and look after itself, which is so beneficial for everyone and especially anyone with an autoimmune disease, bowel or digestive issues.
- Cancer fighting abilities. Due to the extreme amount of antioxidants juicing is said to help prevent and fight cancer, so it is enormous benefit to everyone. There is amazing research out there on this field alone.
- Cold and flu fighting. Due to all the nutrients in a powerful raw easy to access formula juicing is an incredible way to help your body and immune system fight off all sorts of colds, flu's and bugs.
If you have kids juices are a fantastic and easy, fun way to get a big does of vegetables into the kids!!This Christmas and with the new, fresh year coming up upon us I think one of the best investments we can make for our family and our own health is actually fresh homemade juices using something like the
Vitality 4 Lifes Juicers. I use my juicer so often it s honestly one of the best investments I ever made in my home and for my health too.
I also make small juices in glass bottles for the kids to take to school sometimes and I just love the feeling of giving them a juice with their breakfast in the school morning, or after school on the way to sports or dance knowing what a powerful does of nutrients their bodies are getting.
Plus if your keen to get Summer beach body ready then juicing is your new friend! It can help you drop dress sizes, reduce bloating and clear up skin so you can GLOW this Summer!
We have a few favourite juice recipes but this beautiful, rich Healthy, Happy Life juice is a current favourite!
A Healthy, Happy Life Juice
Ingredients
2 cups chopped watermelon
1 large beetroot
1 &1/2 cups fresh green kale
1/2 large cucumber
1/2 cup baby spinach greens
1 red apple
1 green apple
4 long stalks celery
Method
I juice the beetroot, watermelon and red apple together.
Then I juice the kale, spinach, cucumber, green apple and celery.
In serving glasses I pour some of the red juice then top with some of the green and while it ends up dark you get this lovely swirling effect of the two colours on top, which adds to decorative effect - not essential you can absolutely just juice it all together of course!

I purposely left the ginger out of this one as my kids often find ginger in a juice just too much, sometimes you can hide it but it is nice to have some juice recipes that are ginger free for them too.
I highly recommend letting the kids make the juices with you!! Kids love putting the fruits and veggies in and turning them to liquid and this fun element means they are going to be excited about trying them
If kids, especially older kids are new to juicing, you will want to start with extra fruit in there like apples and then slowly reduce the fruit and increase the veggies over time.

Smashing ingredients in a mortar and pestle, releasing their intense smells and flavour is one of my favourite kitchen experiences. My beautiful Thai friend Peta brought this into my life when my oldest was just a tiny little thing. It is so different to just chopping or mincing them up.
It is like passion added to the flavours; with this very earthy and intimate hands on experience with your food and its ingredients.
 |
Unlocking the flavours in an earthy, beautiful way |
If you don't yet have a mortar and pestle I highly recommend you get one, or at least put it on your Christmas wish list! You can pick them anywhere from $12 through to $200 + and tiny to large so there is one for every budget and kitchen out there!
In this recipe it brings excitement to the kitchen right away as everyone comes wondering what the great smell is! Plus using fresh organic turmeric has so many amazing health benefits as the curcumin in it is one of the most powerful natural anti-inflammatories out there.
Of huge benefit to anyone with inflammation of any kind like arthritis, uveitis, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, Ankylosing Spondylitis and general back and joint pain in the body it is also said to help prevent Alzheimer's as scientists believe it breaks down plaque in the brain and areas where they eat a lot of turmeric like India have the lowest rates of Alzheimer's in the world.
And the best bit is, you don't have to eat crazy amounts of it, they say even one meal a weel with fresh turmeric in it is beneficial!
Now if you are one of my Sunshine Coast readers I can tell you if you don't grow your own you can buy fresh turmeric from Erbackers, Jeffers Market and often at weekend markets.
Also look out for it where you live at Asian or Indian deli's and grocer stores, wholefood markets, health food shops, fresh fruit and vegetable shops, sometimes even the big supermarkets will have it.
The powerful benefits of the turmeric combined with the garlic and ginger too makes this is a fantastic dish which is why I was excited to team these ingredients with the new
Barilla gluten free pasta range when they sent me out a gorgeous parcel to try. as gluten can be inflammatory for many people this gluten free spaghetti (that truly was not gluggy like some out there can be) is a perfect partnering and the result is just lovely.
This recipe is simple, fragrant and delicious.
It is also easy to make vegetarian, one of my kids ate it that way. I simply made a smaller batch in a separate pan with extra veggies and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Turmeric, Garlic & Ginger Yoghurt Prawn Spaghetti
Ingredients
1/2 kilo green prawns
(I was given a big batch of super fresh, local ones from my neighbour as he is a fisherman- I know right?! Cool neighbour!) Try to find Australian ones if you can and don't be afraid to ask about them and where they are from and if the place supports ethical fishing practises.
Fresh Turmeric. I used a piece about 2 cm long and 1/2 a cm wide. Wash, peel.
Fresh Ginger. If applicable look for local! Washed, peeled.
6-7 cloves of Australian garlic. (Or at least a non bleached kind)
1 red onion, sliced
2 carrots, peeled and sliced longways.
2 zucchini's peeled and sliced longways.
1 large red capsicum. sliced in long strips.
1/2 lemon
1 teaspoon cardamom (or use freshly ground)
1/2 a kilo of natural yoghurt. I like to use Jalna or Maleny Dairies brands
1 & 1/2 cups fresh baby spinach leaves
1/2 bunch fresh coriander
Pink Himalayan salt to taste (optional)
olive oil
Method
Prepare your prawns. I also devein mine and left about 1/3 with their tails on for decorative effect.
In a mortar and pestle smash your turmeric, ginger and garlic until it is pulp like. Take the time to slow down and enjoy this process. Make it a moment in the kitchen. Be present. Enjoy the smell sensations and you hands on with your gorgeous ingredients. If you drink, this is a lovely time to sip a nice glass of wine.
Cook the Barilla gluten free spaghetti according to packet instructions. I served mine el dente.
In a deep pan gently fry the onion in some olive oil on a medium low heat until wilted.
Add in the turmeric smash, stirring well for a minute or so.
Toss in the carrots, zucchini and capsicum, stir through for another 2 - 3 minutes.
Add prawns, yoghurt and cardamom and cook for around 4 minutes or until prawns are cooked.
Squeeze over lemon right at the end and season with a little salt if desired.
Arrange spaghetti on plates.

Top with a layer of spinach and coriander leaves.
Pour over some of the prawn mixture and drizzle with extra sauce from the pan.
Top with a little fresh coriander.
Serve and enjoy!
Notes
The gluten free spaghetti used here is available from woolworths.
This works just as beautiful vegetarian, increase the veggies and leave the prawns out.
For those who do not like coriander this works perfectly without it as well, though I would recommend some fresh parsley in its place.

I love a good theme, its so much fun and I love any reason to celebrate, party, cook and....decorate!
Yep, I love Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Fancy Dress Parties
Its also always a great, fun opportunity too cook and create new things.
As a mother of two girls I never thought I'd be doing a dinosaur theme, and I have to say I am so glad my youngest is such an eclectic girl, the type who wants to wield a lightsaber while wearing a tutu! Its fun.
My little V loves dinosaurs, so it was only natural she would want a dinosaur party! So Kindy and ballet friends invited the dino planning fun began.

Discovering the non fiction section on dinosaurs at the library has been a highlight of V's year! |

 |
TAKE HOME BAG IDEA ***Dinosaur arts and crafts - great little addition for the take home bag that is not sugar and additive laden lollies is a paint your own dinosaur plaster of paris figure and cut out dino shapes, its personal, the kids love making them and who doesn't like glitter :) |
 |
Not the best shot (boy does that time go fast when you are setting up!) But you get the idea, lots of green and jungle features. |
 |
Dinosaur footprints lead the way |
And such a fun part - the party food! Now I do believe in living life pretty much 80/20, yes my kids eat very healthy a large percentage of the time but I will also let them have abought icecream on a hot day out, fish and chips at the beach and a normal cake for their birthday! But I do still try and have lots of party food that is home made, additive free, fresh, wholefoods and refined sugar free as much as possible. In fact I even had the face painter comment at V's dino party just how calm and happy all the kids were - and yes, the kids were all still munching away happily! It is just that, yes its a party so you have some treats but you can also have lots of fun and delicious food that is healthy too.
 |
Dinosaur footprint biscuits! These are fun and simple! I'll blog this recipe soon - why not sign up over on the side so you don't miss it. |
 |
Dinosaur eggs - these are my bliss balls made small get the recipe HERE |
 |
Flower Fossils - gluten free , get the recipe HERE |
 |
I found this idea on pinterest, I just made little mini spelt muffins, turned them upside down, cut them flat and then when cold topped with melted white chocolate that I mixed a few drops of food colour & beetroot juice into. |
 |
Viola iceburgs - these made the kids drinks of cold water funky, always a great idea to provide lots of iced cold water at parties, if you want you could add some cordial, there are also stevia varieties out there. |
We also served a sausage sizzle right before the cake, we had gluten free meat sausages and vegetarian sausages (cooked separately) and gluten free and fresh baked bread. We served with the Natvia refined sugar free tomato and BBQ sauces (find in Coles). Always a reliable hit for kids (and parents) and everyone loves the smell of a cooking bbq and onions :)

 |
Swamp Dip - Guacamole Yes, I didn't get a shot before the kids had tried some haha! |
Swamp Dip Guacamole
4 large ripe avocado's
1 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce (I used homemade refined sugar free, made with stevia but bought is fine)
1 cabbage
Cut up carrot, celery (leave some with the leaves on to look jungley), red capsicum slivers and we also had gluten free corn chips
Blend together avocado, sour cream and sweet chili - taste test, tweak if needed.
Kids love this dip and it is not hot so don't be frighten of the chili sauce in it!
Cut your cabbage in half, trying to leave any funky outside leaves in place for the dinosaur/jungle look. Using a knife score the pieces of cabbage and then remove with a spoon (give your self a few minutes to do this part)
Fill with the smooth guacamole.
Serve.
 |
The Dinosaur Cake Ok, yes it does look a little like a chameleon haha but the kids didn't notice - I blame the eyes! |
To make a Dinosaur cake I made 2 of my chocolate yoghurt cakes with organic sugar (but you could use whatever kind you liked really). One round, one rectangle. I got the idea from a food ideas magazine and then tweaked and played around with the design. I drew the shapes I wanted on baking paper to use as a trace to cut out the pieces, waited until the cake was stone cold and then used green butter cream icing to decorate and cut down ice cream cones for spikes and horns, you could actually put spikes right along the back of the dinosaur as well.
The frill was cut as one piece and slipped over the head.
I recommend making the cake the day before if that works for you timing wise. I didn't decorate mine with lollies like the food ideas magazine but you could if you wanted too, I was just trying to keep additives to a minimum, but that are brands out there that are additive free and you could of course make this with a gluten free cake mix as well - if you were looking for an easy, instant one I recommend Tania Hubbard's from Gluten Free Grain Free.

Finding Calm in A Busy, Modern Life.
When parenthood hits you are in a bubble of bliss. You have your new baby, life is a miracle full of love and all is good in the world.
And then, as it does, life starts to get busy. Babies grow and life becomes a bustle of rushing around.
I don’t know about your family life but my day to day can get pretty hectic!

Kids to get ready for school and kindy, lunch boxes to make, hair to do, uniforms to have ready, sibling fights to negotiate, then there is after school sports and activities, work schedules, housework, dinners to organise, meals to plan, shopping to do, appointments, events and then throw in some life events, accidents, unexpected hiccups and the odd illness or day care bug and of course the blog to look after and write and is it any wonder that life can get a little stressful?
Stress as we know (and hear in the media) can be very harmful to our bodies.
Stress activates the body’s sympathetic nervous system and our inbuilt fight or flee response.
It is a very powerful design and does of course serve us well in times of emergency however activating this as often as we do in our stressful, busy modern lives can be very detrimental to our health.
In fact many experts now say we can eat as healthy as we like and exercise well but if we are not also making reducing stress an equal priority we can still get serious health issues.
So as a busy mum when the new year clicked over to 2014 I decided my word for the year was going to be CALM…..
My mind, my body and my health had to start taking some priority if I was going to be healthy and happy and a great role model to my kids. I needed to bring some quiet, some peace, plenty of time outs and self nurturing and as much relaxation as possible into my day to day life. I needed more CALM.
So how do we get more calm into our busy lives?
Here are some of my TOP TIPS for blessing our lives with more beautiful calm.- Get organised. Yes, it really does work. Have a calendar (I have two) plan out each day and major events/appointments/sporting activities/school dates/bill due dates/fee due dates/birthdays/banking reminders. Have it somewhere visible that you see all the time and use it as the great tool it is. If you’re a blogger you could even have one just for your blog and what you need to do/post and when.
- Have an organised space in the home for all the kids activities. I have a rack with containers for school (including bags), kindy, ballet, swimming, gymnastics etc. It makes life so much smoother to know everything for each activity is right in its spot when you need it and always has that organised home to go to. I find it also empowers the kids to look after their own stuff and also know where to put it each day.
- Bake it Sundays. This cuts out so much stress! Each Sunday I spend quite a few hours baking muffins, biscuits, quiches, sausage rolls or pies type things and then freeze them for the busy school/kindy week ahead. I can then take out what I need as needed for lunchboxes.
I also try and make a few dinner options for “those night” things like a cannelloni, quiche, and lasagne, bolognaise sauce that I can freeze for any easy meal during the week. - Mummy Time. Oh yeah, we soooo need it!! This can be as simple as an Epsom salt bath for 10 minutes, reading a book somewhere quiet, a walk on the beach, a gym session, yoga class, art class, dance class, a run around the block, catching a chai with girlfriends, making jewellery, painting, going to the cinema by yourself (and it’s not Disney), doing laps at the local pool, even cooking to music in an empty house – whatever makes you feel relaxed and full of JOY.
- De-Clutter – it’s amazing how much better you feel when you declutter! One of my favourite books, “Does this clutter make my but look big” helped changed my life and inspired me to de clutter my life! Yes, I am still not perfect and yes I have ornaments and things and occasionally some clutter creeps in here and there but every so often we have a family culling and it always feel wonderful!
- Insure what matters in your life.
This can take a MASSIVE chunk of worry off your shoulders.
Imagine rushing about your morning routine, kids in the car ready to go to where they need to go and you head down the road and the unimaginable happens someone goes right through that stop sign and hits you. You and your kids are all ok but your car, is a write off. What would you do? Who would you call? How when you still get the kids to where they needed to go, not just today but every day? You never realise how much you rely on your car for everything until you can’t.
Trust me, I have had this exact thing happen and you guessed it, we were not insured and the other driver at fault’s insurance company only paid out the lowest market value they could find on the internet for our car. Not taking into consideration work or improvements (it was a 4 wd with accessories) and they took forever and a day too.
We have more than enough on our plates already so take some stress away from the occasion, take out comprehensive car insuranse. - Have regular health and dental check ups. Yes, it might seem boring but when they find and treat things early on – it works out so much better (and cheaper) in the long run!
This year I got both my kids well known to our local dentist, they have had check ups and cleans and talks with him about the importance of brushing, plus he gave them barbie toothbrushes which as you can imagine went down rather well! - Get on top of that paperwork. Did I hear you groan? Or maybe you are one of those super
ocd organised people that I wish I was!! Yes, it can be heavy going but really a draw, cupboard overflowing with folders or a filing cupboard you just thing eergh about is not aiding to your new zeness! If you can afford to (and need to) hire a bookkeeper! Or make a day once a month to go through it all and keep it organised and filed and shred what you don’t need and if its not glossy – turn into super urber useful garden compost J - Be Prepared. Some might laugh that know me well but yes, I like to be prepared! I have an extensive first aid kit in the car, one for the pram and one at home. In my boot I will have an umbrella, torch, mini tool kit, rope, 2 towels, change of clothes for both kids (including undies), spare thongs for everyone, money for a phone call, picnic blanket, bottles of water, non-perishable emergency snacks for the kids, wipes, sanitiser, even a toilet roll! Just In Case. Haha
Yes, I guess it is a little dorky maybe even OCD of me ( I am a little bit) but you would not believe how many times over the years it has come in handy! And not just for me, sometimes for other people I have helped! - Teach Your Kids Your Phone Number & Address. Easy to overlook put this is a really simple thing that could be very important if they ever got lost.
- Tee up Emergency Parent Pick Up Friends. Ever had that day when something happened and you couldn’t get to the school in time to collect your kids? Or needed to drop them off too early?
A really great idea is to form a small network with some parents you trust that live near you where you can swap each other’s details and organise to be a drop off/pick up back up option when something important comes up. This really will REALLY reduce stress in your life. There is such relief in knowing if you get stuck, can’t get away from work, your car breaks down, an appointment runs over or is too early that you have someone you can call who can help!
Of course there are many more things you can do to reduce stress in day to day life, these are just a few that I have found really help me. Would love you to leave any tips you too have below as well for everyone!
Live well. Eat Beautiful. Stay Calm. Be Happy.

Last week I got to do something pretty fun.
Kids Business invited me to a special bloggers event the launch of the
Myer #Giftorium! Now I LOVE Christmas, it is one of the happiest times of the year for me, the decorations, the gift wrapping, the gift buying, the shopping, the making, the cooking, the relaxing, THE FOOD, the family and friends getting together, the shared meals and festivities, the events and outings, the Christmas lights, the Santa photo's, the decorations ( I said that already didn't I...?Well they are pretty wonderful, maybe I am just ornament obsessed ;)

A beautiful princess carriage - sigh - and an event calender that is timeless, classic and has no sugar filled treats that the kids would want to eat at 6 in the morning #winner |

I caught a train,
by myself, from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane for the event and it felt really odd at first as I always do everything with my kids,
like everything. My kids are my world and I love spending time with them so when anything special or fun comes up I find it hard to think of the experience without them.
But, since making looking after me a priority in my life too, doing things just for me and getting to know me time all by myself all over again I am making the effort to take adventures on my own too.
At first I felt a little guilty, then peaceful, then exhilarated and when I saw all the amazing fun for kids at the new Myer Giftorium I felt guilt all over again, ok, maybe only briefly I was enjoying myself too much!
 |
I even got an AWESOME arm workout striding through the city to my train carrying all my goodies! And PS a soda stream PLAY is an awesome idea for a Christmas present for the kiddos!! Watch my BLOG for some very exciting refined sugar FREE recipes coming soon or look up my PINK LEMONADE recipe in the search button. |
I was very impressed with the whole event organised by Kidsbusiness it was beautifully set out, the shopping was incredible and there was magicians, face painters, balloon twisters, personal shoppers called gifticians and so much helpful staff to make Christmas shopping relaxed and stress free.
Yes, I am all for anything that helps us bring more CALM and JOY into our lives.
From November 8th all 67 Myer stores will have their own Giftorium, personal shopper experiences, gift wrapping, Santa, Vista print (I am SO excited about that!!) and staff in funky Christmas themed outfits and weekend entertainment for the kids.
Really I think Myer is going all out to bring the magic back to Christmas and as a big fan (or the child inside maybe) I was in awe and cannot wait to take my kids to both the Brisbane Myer and our local Sunshine Coast Myer store this Christmas and do some Christmas shopping in amongst all the fun.
Some of the themed sections of the Giftorium which features over 2.2 million products include:
Miracle Mum
Glamour Gran
Dapper Dad
Trendy Young Things
Kids Cubby
Paws Corner (yes, the pets have a gift section!)
Globe Trotter
Techno Freak
Food Fanatic (Oh I saw all sorts of lovely kitchen things here!!)
Hop, Skip, Juice (for health & Fitness fans - oh yeah, this section rocked)
and all the Christmas ornaments, decorations and pieces - sigh...so beautiful!
Check out the hashtag #GIFTORIUM across social media to see pictures from right around Australia!Plus in store they will have a huge digital screen showcasing all photos from Instagram with that hashtag! Why not check it out and then join the fun :)

Since hitting my 30's I have noticed my skin go through a real change. Gone is the oily skin of my youth and now I have skin that needs,
wants moisture.
I can still hear my mother saying to me when I was young what her mother had told her and her grandmother had told her mother (and all had great skin and aged very well) you must moisturise your skin every day and with moisturiser you can trust, look after your skin as a woman, especially your face, neck, cleavage and hands and you will be forever glad you did.
Even when I look now at photos of my grandmother (whose last boyfriend was 34 years her junior!!) and my great grandmother I am amazed at how great their skin was and how well they aged, even my own mother in her late fifties now looks younger than she is and ix not heavily lined at all.
But did I, a modern girl born in the good old 80's listen to advice from generations of women in my family??
Gah, I wish!!
No instead I have spent years in the sun (horticulturalist so sort of comes with the territory I guess), in salt water and when I did put anything on my skin it was usually chemical laden make-up with no doubt toxic levels of who knows what!?
And yes, I have started to noticed those lovely face
friends, wrinkles...
Well, good old hindsight and all that at least I am on to it now!!
 |
Proof I am looking after my skin more and getting sun savvy! |
So this year in my life self care and self body love is playing a big part.
When I watching the series breaking bad, (yes I was surprised that I got right into it), there was a scene when the pregnant Skylar was moisturising her pregnant belly and her arms and neck, it instantly triggered in me memories of always watching my mother moisturising and I realised that I just don't spend that much time doing simple acts of self love like this...
Am I really
that busy or tired after the kids have gone to bed that I cannot spend even 10 minutes shining some love on myself and body?
No of course not so this is now a part of my nightly ritual!!
As part of this I have been on a mission to search out and find brands of skin care products that I can trust, that my skin actually likes and that really resonate with this self love and appreciation act.
In my search I have been delighted to come across a gorgeous brand called
The name appealed to me right away as it sounds like a natural beauty range made by a woman who is proud to put her name to her product.
Of course it was (and some of you may already know I have a real thing about getting parcels ;) sent to me in a gorgeous packaged way with such detail it made my day!
When I first looked over the products I was absolutely thrilled reading the ingredient list - what a change from some out there with all those scary long unpronounceable chemical ingredients!
Here is an example:
The **beautiful** lip balmWheat germ Oil
Borage Seed Oil
Golden Seal root extract
Calendula flower extract
Slippery Elm extract
St John’s Wort extract
Simple Tincture of Benzoin
Pau D’Arco
Vitamin E (botanically derived)
Jojoba
Rosehip
The lush cream:Golden seal
Calendula Herbal extract
Borage Seed Oil
Aloe Vera
Simple tincture of Benzoin
Colloidal Oatmeal
Vitamin A
How could you not be thrilled with ingredients like that? Now I have also been trying quite a few natural skin care ranges lately and some have been great, some meh, some just lovely and the Caroline's Range definitely came under just lovely. Especially the lip balm - which I had to hide from my daughters and my visiting mother ( I guess I know what they will be getting in their Christmas stockings!)
Caroline's is also said to be excellent for Eczema, Dermatitis and Psoriasis.
My review? I really liked the range, I would add this to me fave natural ranges. I find the face wash leaves your skin really smooth and clean feeling, the moisturiser is nice and light - I could probably use a little heavier/deeper moisturising for my skin type on top of it but it felt just lovely on with no greasy residue and you can easily apply make-up after it without having to wait or worry about it not applying properly.
Also I know this range is safe, chemical free and even safe for my kids should they sneak some (which being girls they are wont to do!)
I will definitely add the lip balm to my beauty essentials, it is one of the best I have tried.
You can find the Carolines range and check them out yourself
HEREAnd find them on
