1. Well, actually…

That hiatus I mentioned last post might not be as over as I thought.  I have a serious case of blogging and reading fatigue, and the S.A.D. certainly isn’t helping.  So I’m closing up shop for now. I wish everyone a very happy holiday season, and a bright start to 2015!

2. Strange things did happen here…

Hi everyone!  So, that was another fun hiatus.  Since our last episode: My family moved from our Wisconsin home of 20 years, to the Fort Wayne area. I’ve made it a project to check out all the area coffee places and review them on FourSquare (and also hopefully find a new favorite haunt or two). Put […]

3. Nursery Rhyme Redux

Three years ago, before Fairy Tale Comics, there appeared in the folklore-themed-comicsphere… What I love about this collection is that the illustrators treat the rhymes like little stories, following the original words but interpreting them in different ways.  It’s “not a parody or deconstruction,” says editor Chris Duffy, but they do imagine context and backstory — who’s […]

6. Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’, slippin’: Guess the book by the 90s song title

Let’s play a game!  Inspired by Book Riot‘s “We Didn’t Start the Pale Fire: Books Summarized By 80s Song Titles,” I thought I’d make my own list of book-summing song titles – drawn from the 90s, since that’s the decade that represents my childhood.  And the books will be those previously reviewed here at Postcards, specifically the ones on […]

7. Sorry, did you say something? I was busy reading this awesome YA and not hating myself for it

*bridge-of-nose pinch* So, there’s apparently some new Defender of Mature Adult Literature out there, telling us over-18-year-olds that we “should be embarassed” about our enjoyment of books written (or at least marketed) for children and teens.  I’m not going to give this person any fame by naming names…and yes, I did consider the perhaps more […]

8. A (very) short graduation playlist

Let’s do something different today.  I do occasionally like to talk about non-book-related things here, so… The other day, as I was listening to “Drive,” by Incubus, I thought, Hey! I should do a post about some of the songs I associate with graduation — my high school graduation.  That’s totally YA-related, and relevant to current […]

9. “It was not simply beauty and strength, it was terror.”

I’m trying to recall where, exactly, I first heard of this book…I know I very quickly added it to my Goodreads To-Read list last October, but the GR summary doesn’t include the one element that’d especially grabbed my attention.  Maybe it was one of the reviews that first mentioned the strange, sparkling bones found by the protagonist — bones […]

10. Annie on My Mind

This is one of those books I’d heard about for years.  I knew it was a groundbreaking work, but I never really thought about checking it out until last month.  I was looking for a different book in the YA section of one of my local libraries (Keturah and Lord Death, by Martine Leavitt; I […]

11. Video chat: Is YA actually better at feminism than adult lit?

So, I’ve been spending more time these past few months over at IB, but I promise I haven’t forgotten La-La Land.  New Postcards are on the way, including reviews of the 80s classic Annie on my Mind, by Nancy Garden, and the more recent Lost Voices trilogy, by Sarah Porter. In the meantime, I present the following video discussion between myself […]

12. Dear Authors: Not every YA heroine needs a boyfriend

Cross-posted from IB. ________________ I like a good literary romance well enough.  Aw, who am I kidding, I’m the shippiest shipper in all of shipdom.*  I was on Team Ron/Hermione right from Sorcerer’s Stone (I swear I started this post before J. K.’s recent comments ^_^;; ).  Want to know just how Johnlocked I am (of course […]

13. “Scary ghost stories and tales of the glories…”: New Year’s folk and fairy tales

I just wrote my first post over at IB.  My very first IB post! Here’s a preview: _____________________ … Note:  there will be SPOILERS. *  *  *  *  * “The Fire New Year” – A poor man and woman are celebrating the New Year, making do with what very little they have, when a weary traveler knocks on […]

14. I hereby de-strictify my aforementioned challenge

[sigh]  Show of hands, how many of you saw this coming?  Don’t worry, I won’t hold it against you.  It’s not that I’m quitting, per se, so much as canceling the central rule of the challenge.  Which…ok, that sounds like quitting, but it’s not.  I’ll explain… About 5 and a half months ago, it was […]

16. Now THAT’S how you make a book-based movie!!

So, I saw Catching Fire on Sunday and felt pretty much like Chester from the Nostalgia Critic‘s “Bum Reviews” – the latest of which, incidentally, is Catching Fire (beware of spoilers) (P.S. the NC reviews – though not so much the Bum Reviews – tend to include much swearing, just so’s you know) OH MY GOSH this is […]

17. 2013 Hall o’ Faves

I feel like this was a less prolific year for me, in terms of reading, so there are fewer titles for this year’s list.  Hopefully I’ll pull out of this slump soon (and finally finish that darn challenge — there are new books I really want to read, but my path is blocked by the […]

18. What are the really truly best YA books EVER?

An impossible question?  Well, we’re putting it out there anyway!  Inspired by Entertainment Weekly’s Best YA bracket game, sj of Booksnobbery made her own version a few weeks ago, with 120 titles suggested by her followers.  Readers voted, and sixty titles advanced.  Since then, an upcoming move and other RL commitments have kept sj very […]

This is a Finish ALL the Books! update.  You can find the complete list of FAtBC titles here, and the ones I’ve finished so far, here. ______________________ Back in my 2012 Favorites post, I mentioned a few books I was looking forward to adding to this year’s Hall o’ Faves.  This is one of them: […]

20. Merry Meet! Merry Part! And merrily plz get me an iced mocha!

Edit 09-05-13:  I really don’t usually do this (except for that one other time), but I wanted to add a few more things (just a few, really).  It was late, I was tired, yadda yadda, and in the light of another day, the post just looked a bit rushed and incomplete.  So I’ve added a […]

21. My recent trip to DisneyWorld (a Postcards Out-of-Book-Experience™)

Yes, ok, all right, I know it’s not the most original thing.  I’m not the first, second, or even 33,333rd person to go to DisneyWorld.  But it was my first time, and it was a Juv/YA lit-and-folklore/fairytale-related experience, so by gosh, I will record it! Being the dedicated blogger on Juv/YA stuff and folklore/fairytale-related things that I […]

22. Nostalgic Review: short stories edition

Ever since I started the Nostalgic Review feature, I’ve been meaning to do a post on my favorite/most-clearly-remembered short stories from grade- and high-school English classes.  Remember those awesome lit textbooks you always wished you could keep after the semester or school year ended? (What? It wasn’t just me, right? Right?) And since a few […]

23. I hereby challenge myself to finish ALL THE BOOKS!!!

Credit to Hyperbole and a Half for inspiring the “[Verb] ALL the [Nouns] meme. . . . . . . . . by which I mean that, as of the publishing of this post*, I’m not letting myself buy or borrow any new books until I’ve read all** the books I’ve purchased over the years […]

24. Swaying in my hammock

For this month’s Exchange, Book Bloggers International asks:  What’s your favorite reading spot? Is it a comfy chair?  A sweet sofa?  A reading nook by a window?  A place in the park?  A coffee shop?  Your bed?  Your deck or front porch?  Where do you find yourself loving to crack open a book? As with […]

25. The oddly touching story of a proto-muppet-Goblin (as written by a Python)

And now for something completely different! I may have once or twice mentioned my love for a certain Jim Henson film starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly.  Well, last year, when my best friend asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I remembered a book I’d been meaning to get my hands on for […]
