Roasting my legs. The fabric of the pants I wore would warm in the thickness and I would feel good for awhile. It would feel good as my arms and back got cold. My legs would warm me through transduction or so.
I looked out yonder hither and I beknownst come a beast.
He looked upon me and purred a savage rest.
“Why come you!” I shouted out into the unforgiving dark.
He purred some more and sat just outside the firelight.
I know the cat that stands a dog. I know his affliction for I was once was. I was once.
And his eyes glittered strong against the moon, watching me.
The chicken, I pulled out of my pack, intrigued him but he did not move.
I pulled my skewer against it but still the hyena did not budge.
I thrust my pull into the fire and we watched the heat spoil it. And yet I knew better.
As I pulled it away, steam rolled off the top of the spike and the blacked edges of meat. You could tell that the meat was cooked through. ‘When its black, it’s done’ as cooks used to say.
He looked on.
I smelled the chicken and took a bite.
He looked on.
I looked upon the meat and decided a friend was worth the belly. I pulled the meat off the skewer and laid it cleanly on the ground. I could still eat it here.
The hyena looked up, and laughed under its breathe.
And I thought, oh no. He has finally found me in this dark, against this light.
And the beast walked forward casually. As if expecting no less than you and ate the chicken quietly.
A single look up in gratitude was enough for me.
I wept the night.

2nd Annual FaeryFest 2012
Perth, ON
By Cheryl Sinfield, Faerie Ce Ce
The Faeries are returning to Perth, ON. Saturday, June 9th, 2012 for the 2nd Annual FaeryFest! This Festival will take place at the Perth Civitan Hall, on Highway 43, just outside of Perth, from 10am to 5pm. Come dress in your finest Faery garb or mystical creature! Faery Wings are most WELCOME! In the Faery tradition of healing the planet and helping the animals, there will be free admission to the Festival but a donation to L.A.W.S. would be greatly appreciated. This year L.A.W.S. will be there with their own booth to accept donations and give info on the animal shelter. Last year's festival attracted approx. 200 - 250 people, with only 13 vendors, artists, and authors, etc. This year's festival has a bigger venue of 35 vendors, artists, and authors, etc. to date. The participants of FaeryFest will be inside the hall, as well as outside on the grounds surrounding the hall.
The organizer, Cheryl Sinfield was given this idea to have a FaeryFest last year from a close friend. She wanted to include anything and everybody that believed in the Faery Faith/Energy. The Faeries are here to remind us not to take life so seriously and have some fun. This is what the organizer wants to accomplish with this event! There will be something for everyone, for the very young to the young at heart!
Local artists, authors, vendors, oracle readers and healing practitioners will be there to temp you with their wares, knowledge and skill. As well as a FaeryLand Craft Zone for the little "Faeries" too. Local Perth resturant, Grandma's Lunch Box will be there to satisfy any mystical creature's stomach with treats, snacks, drinks and lunch.
There are many artists coming and returning to FaeryFest this year, here are a few of them. Sculptor, Doug MacDonald from Rue Royale has a wide array of cast cement sculptures. Another returning sculptress is Cheryl Sinfield of Faerie Art by Faerie Ce Ce with her natural one-of-a-kind Faery houses and doors, to attract the Faeries. Fibre artist, Cindy Keary will return too with her shawls and other kniting and weaving, which she makes from the wool from her own sheep. Her son is offering handmade candle holders with symbols for every modality. Christine Joyce will be showing and selling her originals and prints of Faery paintings and drawings. She will be selling masks, candles and cards too. Nature-inspired patio figurines M.E.L.PS. (Mary-Ellen's-Little-People) by artist Mary-Ellen Dick will be at FaeryFest too. Another sculptor/artist, John Ladd will be offering his wood carvings, hand built pottery, sheet metal art and paintings and sketches. A new artist/vendor to FaeryFest is Maryse Ferguson. She makes beautiful stain glass art and tie dye clothing. Pauline Bodkin and Tracey Foster will be sharing a booth. They will be showing and selling their Faery Shields, pa

The softly blowing wind kisses my face,
feelings of no disgrace.
The harmony makes me feel like I belong,
As the birds fly by singing us that delightful song.
Shadows are cast from the bare trees,
As they dance along with gentle breeze.
Freedom from our souls roams about as we please,
This brings about a new sense ease.

Insanity runs though her veins,
as she tries to remain sain.
Looking around not making a sound,
as delusions of her psychosis is spun up all around.
Covering up her deeply rooted sadness,
which has brought upon her madness.
A fake smile to hide the truth,
Which only steals away her youth.

She's like a candle in the wind,
flickering in and out,
but nearly burn out,
the hollowness of death has crept upon her body,
leaving her to be a mostly empty shell.
The smile has gone from her face,
it's nearly time for her to go to another place.
Her voice is gone and left her mute,
simple nods and hand gestures is all that remains.
Wings will be placed.

Nathalie M. Leblanc “IS” a superb Canadian writer of children’s fantasy. Her first book in the Magic Coat Series entitled “Shrinking Forward” is a must read for any fantasy enthusiast age 8-12. It’s a book you won’t want to put down until you reach the very end … and then you’ll be wanting more.
Leblanc skillfully engages us in a monumental struggle where the fate of an entire civilization rests on the small shoulders of Samantha, her best friend Catherine and a fairy queen. Staying completely true to the genre, Leblanc doesn’t shy away from tragedy and demonstrates that “sometimes” good can only be accomplished with a bit of sacrifice.
Her style, her prose, her characters, her plot all mesh together in a well thought-out and balanced journey through an alternate world. The protagonist, Samantha, is thrust into an unimaginable adventure where trust, friendship and determination are the only things pushing her forward, even when the odds are completely against her. It is a journey of self-discovery that helps define who she is, where she came from and why she always felt a little bit different than her friends. All Leblanc's characters have very believeable personalities which adds to the enjoyment of the story.
Leblanc’s first book in the series depicts the true meaning of the genre “heroic or quest fantasy” which allows her the advantage of sending her fictional characters into adventures that are virtually endless. These stories are very popular with young children as the extraordinary events only happen in the secondary world and the primary world continues to be a safe and normal haven. Will Samantha triumph over good and evil or will it be just too much for her young age to handle?

Having a healthy self-esteem is a child's armor against the challenges of the world around them. Kids who feel good about themselves seem to have an easier time handling conflicts day to day and resisting negative pressures. They tend to smile more readily and enjoy life.
Nathalie M. Leblanc was born in Sarnia, Ontario. After graduating from Heritage College in Social Sciences majoring in Psychology, Nathalie decided to pursue her dream to write fantasy novels for readers aged nine to ninety-nine. Shrinking Forward is the first book in a trilogy entitled ‘The Magic Coat’. As a parent of four adorably energetic children, she sees the value of teaching morals, self-confidence, and co-operation through the written word.

How do you describe your work?
Well, I am primarily a romance writer – contemporary romances, with some sensuality. Recently, I have done some contemporary and paranormal erotic, which was a stretch for me, but they turned out ok. So, I describe myself as a romance writer, who occasionally does erotica!
My writing itself… Either erotica or romance, I’d say it’s all about the characters, as I am fascinated with character motivation and internal struggle. So, my work is not plot driven so much – no averting alien invasions and things. Just thinking and writing about what makes people do what they do, and that’s sometimes a sad thing, and also often a funny thing. And I love it!
Tell us about Strings Attached, your first full length release.
My first full length release comes out in 2011 from Wild Horse Press, and is tentatively scheduled for May 31, 2011. The novel is a contemporary romance set in Manitoba, Canada, and in Australia. It revolves around the themes of loss and healing, and the risk in having a marriage end badly and deciding to try again. And, of course, about irresistible attraction, and the power of love to force us out of our protective shells. In it, Josie, an optimist, must bring the damaged Theo back to life, and the results are often funny and often poignant.
What did you learn from writing Strings Attached?
I made a very serious study of romances before and during the writing of Strings – the flow and expectations of the genre. This piece was a freshm

Shrinking Forward
Prologue
FAIRMONT ISLAND
High at the top of a blackened hill, a tall dark wizard stood with his arms raised upward. The wind swirled, pulling at his cloak and whipping his long grey hair about. Amid the sounds of vicious screeching and terrified cries, his lips moved at a rapid speed, mouthing incantation after incantation. Only those who his words could reach and control could hear his evil spells. It was war, as no one had ever seen before. The wizard called forth hundreds of dragons to darken the sky with their fiery breath and brimstone to aid him in his dark war. Down and down they swooped, scorching the land and its creatures. Armed with swords and small circular shields the Mystical Flyers fought bravely, keeping the evil wizard and his minions at bay for as long as they could.
Alas, it was not enough.
The land was littered with smouldering ruins as far as the eye could see. The bodies of the dead lay on the ground and the cries of the wounded filled the air as the wizard commanded his minions to sort them into cages.
“No!” screamed Queen Marina, as she cautiously flew, weaving her way through tangles of skirmish. “This cannot be happening!”
Dragons descended, one after the other in a seemingly endless line from the sky to pursue her, until they created a tight V-shaped formation around her. Though her exhausted wings were caked with mud, Marina pushed herself as fast as she could.
The huge creatures flanked her on every side, closing in and finally forced her to fly into a small cage. Shrieking, the dragon to her left whipped its tail around, and knocked Marina between the wings, causing her to fall to the ground.
Stumbling as she landed, Marina heard the heavy door slam shut. Quickly, she got to her feet and raced to the side of the cage. She wrapped her hands around the sleek bars composed of solid silver. Strange symbols were inscribed on them, stretching from the top of the cage to the bottom. A quick check and a pull on the tips of her wings satisfied Marina that she was intact.
Frantically, she looked about, growing more afraid by the minute. Placed in rows, alongside her cage, were dozens of larger cages containing thousands of other Mystical Flyers. She looked up, beyond the cages and saw nothing but a scorched, war-stricken land. The countryside, once beautiful and filled with vibrant people, was now scarred from the mighty battle and forever painted with the taint of war. The cries of her people and the smell of her burning home were permanently imprinted into Marina’s memory.
Though the tears that started to blur her vision threatened to flow, she fought them back, telling herself that she must not break. Marina searched wildly for a way in which she could possibly free her people. They were in desperate need. She tried many times to escape by casting a spell but nothing seemed to work. All around her, hundreds of Mystical Flyers flew through the air as fast as they could, trying to flee from the wizard’s minions. They cried out to their queen, in fear and desperation.
The Mystical Flyers resembled small humans being. In elegant medieval-style clothing with light brown, butterfly-like wings made of varying sizes. The height of each individual ranged from two to four feet high, roughly the size of young human

Reading this book has inspired me. In many ways it has lifted my self confidence, in which helped me focus on the many positive things in my life. To go forward in life you must first learn to forgive the person or people that have hurt you during your path of life.
Otherwise walking through life will be heavy and many shadows are cast from you. Leaving you in the darkness of depression, which is lonely and allowing the person or people in the past win in victory, they did not just hurt you the day of the incident... they hurt you each and every day you carry the burden on upon your shoulders. Read Strategies for Happiness by Donna L. Hedley, Bre and learn how to achieve the happiness you deserve! I will always keep her book as a reminder and a symbol that I deserve to be happy and to never allow others to bring me down!
