1. Daily Doodles

I've been neglecting my poor blog lately because I've been so super busy on some very exciting (but top secret) book projects. More info to follow... So I thought I'd post a few of the daily doodles I've been doing. Unfortunately I haven't been able to post these on the @Daily_Doodle twitter account for some technical reason that I can't fathom, so they are having an outing here instead.

Not particularly seasonal, I admit, but this is the image that came into my head this week from the prompt 'spark'. I love sparklers!

13. new girl!

Here's a little image that came out of some experiments with a new technique that I've been playing with after looking at vintage pen and ink drawings.

15. IF: Refrain

A bit late this week for Illustration Friday but I've been super-busy working on some very exciting projects.

Like this little snowman, I love to hear the robin's cheerful refrain.

18. Back to School...

Here in France, everyone is busy getting ready for 'la rentrĂ©e' - the return to school - next week. It is a hectic time of dashing around finding new books, school bags, pens, pencils, pencil cases and a gazillion other things for the new term.

I came across this image I did a little while ago. Wouldn't it be nice to just stay super-relaxed and arrive like this for the first day at school?

19. GTS round 1 submission

Back from our holiday in Sweden, and I'm just catching up with things and tying up lose ends before I dive back in to on-going projects next week. I realise that I'd forgotten to blog about my first round submission for GTS, so here is the piece I created. I really enjoyed drawing these little fancy-dress  playground characters, and quite surprised myself with the colour palette!

20. Have More Fun!

I really am a busy bee just now: apart from my book with Bloomsbury, which is coming along nicely, and apart from entertaining a constant stream of house guests (one of the many nice things about living in a beautiful part of France!), and apart from the children being on summer holiday, and apart from the cat having five adorable but demanding kittens...I have been lucky enough to have been accepted to Round 2 of Lilla Roger's GTS! The assignment is to create a piece that could be used on a tote bag that might be sold at a Farmers' Market in the Autumn. The brief states that the art can be directed toward any age market, so (of course) I have approached it from a child's perspective. I wanted to create a piece that would be an antidote to traditional associations of autumn - back to school/work, evenings getting darker etc. - and make some art that would be bright and cheerful and remind us all that even when there's work to be done, we should all Have More Fun!

Here's a little snippet:

21. Exciting News...

I've been very neglectful of my blog lately, but for good reason...I have been so super busy working on my first picture book with Bloomsbury! It is called 'Don't call me Sweet!' and is due to be published next March. It's about a little monster who is determined to be anything but sweet! Here is a snippet:

25. IF: train

You need a lot of patience to train a cat!

I don't particularly like drawing trains, diggers, tractors, or anything mechanical actually! I am much more at home with children and animals. A quick sketch for Illustration Friday this week, as I'm working hard on my very first Picture Book with a brilliant UK publisher! More news on that exciting project to follow...
