My friend, Jean, loves bats. We have been calling each other BLOB since high school. Hopefully this all makes sense now... ;)
Best wishes to you for a happy holiday season and a most excellent new year xoxo

Ten years ago I attended my first kid book conference. Today I am revising my own picture book that will be published in 2018. A lot can happen in ten years. Keep drawing, keep writing, never give up.
This little painting of
Chicken Lily is going to be a part of the
silent auction to raise funds for the
Plum Creek Children's Literacy Festival so that more than 13,000+ students can attend the festival free-of-charge. The auction opens on September 1st. Many thanks to Dylan Teut for all that he does to connect kids with books!
"Mashed potatoes and gravy, Marie!"
To celebrate Chicken Lily's book birthday, I am going to give away a signed copy! Leave a comment on this post by midnight on Thursday (3/31) and a winner will be randomly chosen Friday (4/1) morning.
Look at this adorable magnet! I ordered it from
PureButtons and am thrilled with how it turned out. I also placed an order with
StandOut Stickers and am working on a bookmark and probably a postcard, too, that I will order from
GotPrint. I have ordered from GotPrint for ages, their prices are great as is the quality and customer service. StandOut Stickers is a terrific company, I have ordered from them before, too. There will for sure be a giveaway here when CL makes her debut, so stay tuned (and I will get all of my ducks, er, chickens... in a row)! xo
I just had to get the PW spring announcement
issue because Chicken Lily is in it:
Lori Mortensen has another book coming out this spring, too!
There are a LOT of books that I am really looking forward to, including:
You can imagine my surprise when I found this on page 170... yay!
Breathing a sigh of relief- it's a new year!
I'm excited for everyone to meet Chicken Lily
and looking forward to making loads of new art,
cheering on friends as their books are published,
submitting my new book dummy to publishers,
knitting some new scarves, reading lots of books,
and drinking cup after cup after cup of tea.
Wishing you every happiness in 2016!
I recently opened a
Redbubble shop and I am so glad that I did.
The quality of the products is excellent and the merchandise arrives carefully packaged (and yet, not overly packaged) in a very timely fashion.
arrived in perfect condition.
T-shirts and stickers from
Andi Butler's Eleven Santas series.
Aren't they funny!?!
This is the sweet tote bag I ordered from
Gina Perry (adorable greeting cards not pictured).
My Mini White Stars mug pictured alongside
Gina Perry's original Earth Fox painting
(which is also available on products in her shop).
Be sure to check out these fantastic shops:
Working on something new for Halloween, this is a bit from the sketch I just started. I love the weirdness of how ideas happen and look forward to seeing how the final piece will turn out.
I also posted this sketch at The Sketchables today. Happy sketching!
Hello! My kids have officialy been in school for 5 days now. I miss having them at home during the day, but they are enjoying school so far so that is pretty great. Ticking things off my to-do list is a good feeling: our new storm door has been installed and new window boxes are up (the house colors turned out great, btw!), the dogs have been to the vet, and I even scheduled a furnace tune-up. I have some book dummies out on submission right now so that is exciting, working on a new picture book manuscript that will eventually turn into a dummy, and revisiting a painting I started a while ago. Getting all of my duck, duck, gray ducks in a row is a very nice feeling.
p.s. I made my first meme this summer. It barely makes sense. Christopher Walken played The Continental on SNL. Knitting with the yarn in your left hand is the continental style, knitting with the yarn in your right hand is the english style. ha
Hello! Haven't posted in a while, summer vacation is keeping us busy over here. We have picked out new colors to paint our house,
watched some monarch caterpillars turn into butterflies,
picked a lot of raspberries,
added a new pug to our fam (Gordy and Jilly),
and have seen some pretty beautiful sunsets.
Hope that you are having a nice summer so far, too! xo
I was thrilled to receive the proofs for Chicken Lily this week. It's going to be a real book! The official publication date is 29 March 2016. Absolutely thrilled with how it turned out, I can't wait for you to meet Lily and all of her pals! Here is the official cover:
March 13th is Ear Muff Day and also my day to post over at
The Sketchables! I have better at posting at the sketchables every other week than I have been posting at my own blog. I was testing out watercolors on this piece of scrap paper and decided it needed to have a flamingo on it. I used the close tool in photoshop to put some color up on the ear muff. Wow, that is pretty fancy for me! No chance I'll ever become a digital gal, but it is nice to have a trick or two up one's sleeve, no? Happy Friday, Friends!
Do you have a fondness for tartans and mysterious lake monsters?
This is the Valentine for you!
Leave a comment here today (including your name & email address) before 7pm CST and you could win a pack of twenty-five Nessie Valentines! 3 winners will be randomly chosen! Your odds of winning are better than catching a glimpse of Bigfoot! Good Luck!
Hello! The past couple months have been a little busy.
I finished all of the interior art for Chicken Lily late November. I love how it turned out!
(this is Herman, one of Chicken Lily's fellow classmates)
In December my family went on an amazing trip to Austria (my very first time leaving the country!).
(view of the Alps from our hotel window in Innsbruck)
We were invited to hear
Helen Marlais and her husband
Arthur Campbell perform at the
Mozarthaus in Vienna. It was completely enchanting. Helen and Arthur performed a piece written by Timothy Brown, so that was an extra special treat. Helen and Tim are the composers of the
piano music book series that I have been illustrating and are both delightful, amazing, talented artists whom I absolutely adore. It was so wonderful to finally meet them in person!

It has been a blur of Christmastime, winter break, and back to school ever since we returned home. I feel like I am finding my center again, which really feels great! I will hear back soonish on ideas for the Chicken Lily cover and am working on a little piece for Valentine's Day and a new book dummy idea in the meantime. My hope is to post here a little more regularly in this brand-new year. Here's wishing you all the best in 2015! xo Nina
Pretty sure that all I can show from what I am working on right now are the little color blobs in the bottom right corners of all of my illustrations. While I am busy working away, feel free to participate in the Pole Poll (top left). It will be interesting to see which pole(s) prevail in the polls.
To complicate things further, I considered having a Poll Poll to see if people favor polls that are:
(a) inquiries into opinions
(b) the counting of votes/ballots
(3) the top of one's head
(d) pertaining to tame parrots.
That seemed a bit nonsensical to me, so you can just think on it and keep your answer to yourself.
Aaron Zens and the Z-Kids are celebrating 8 years of fabulousness at the their awesome blog, Chicken Nugget Lemon Tooty. Artists are invited to re-imagine art by the kids and submit their creations. I am happy to share the beautiful piece that Elijah created and then the art that he inspired me to make. SO MUCH FUN! Thank you for filling the world with your creativity, Zenz Family!
Here is a brand-new coloring page for the kiddies.
Happy Monday! Happy Coloring! Happy Rainbow Unicorns!
The other day I stopped dead in my tracks and watched in disbelief as this small villain tried to get into my home by scaling the screen door, climbing up so high that we were almost at eye-to-eye with nothing but flimsy mesh between us.
Is this the very same criminal who has been trying to hide some sort of evidence in the flowerpot by our front door? I saw the pile of dirt on the stoop and the hole in the dirt by the geranium firsthand.
When I venture out through the front door, chipmunks chirp and scurry away as fast as they can. What are they so afraid of?
I have heard the thundering of tiny feet on my rooftop, watched the bandit try to cram huge walnuts into the roof vents over and over again. The big green walnuts roll down from the roof and crash down on our deck with every failed attempt. If the walnuts are so special, why are they abandoned so easily? I throw the black walnuts over the fence as far as I can, but I have an old
Nerf Vortex injury, so none of the throws are very great ones, to be honest.
Is this all some plot to grow black walnut trees? I have heard that the lumber is quite valuable (according to
The Profitable Plants Digest), but then why try to plant one in the roof vent of my house? Trees take years to grow, clearly there is a certain level of premeditation going on here. While the squirrels are trying to plant the trees on our rooftop, they surely must realize that the ground would be much better; but then they'd be on the chipmunks' turf...
I shudder to think that there is a connection between this suspicious activity and the untimely death of an unfortunate chipmunk in the vent of our clothes dryer this summer, just 10 feet away from the aforementioned flowerpot.
Is it coincidental, or did the chipmunk know too much?
I find all the little details appealing. I like making every line. I don't mind it when the ink has a mind of it's own. I love it when the paint just does whatever it wants to, when it pools up and makes odd splotches and when it runs into other colors and they bleed into each other. It is just so wonderful to sit at my desk, with the dog using my foot as his pillow, listening to music, and just let the pictures happen. I just feel so happy, and I think that the happy goes into the pictures, and that makes me happy, too. I have been posting lots of in-progress pics on
instagram, that has been pretty fun, too!
Mr. and Mrs. Weasel have pulled over to consult their map. There are oldies playing on the radio. Really old oldies, older than the 80's, even!
Are the stars out tonight?
I don't know if it's cloudy or bright
I only have eyes for you...
Who knew that flamingos could sing?
I am thrilled to share that I will soon begin illustrating an adorable picture book entitled Chicken Lily! It will be published by
Henry Holt in Spring of 2016. I am over the moon, of course! Many thanks to my brilliant agent,
Teresa Kietlinski, and to all my friends and family for all of their support. Time to draw some chickens! xoxo Nina
