As an in-house designer for children's library book publisher, Capstone Library (Heinemann and Raintree imprints), getting external feedback about the market and cover design would be very useful. I'll post thoughts and cover designs - you post your opinions! And why not, everybody else does!

Welcome one and all to the latest update on cover designs. As the more observant of you may be aware, the cover above for Children's Stories series has changed completely from its original incarnation...maybe that's a good thing?
After a recent school library visit you get the general impression that it really doesn't matter - content is king. Design is important of course, it may sway a decision from our competitors book to ours, but it won't instigate a sale. A saddening thought, or maybe a maddening thought, given all the hoops we poor designers have to go through internally to get our designs approved. To paraphrase the famous screenwriter, William Goldman, nobody knows anything - because if they did, we'd get it right every time.
Anyway, here are a few more covers that may or may not come to exist in the world in their current form. You comments are alway welcome dear reader...
More possible library covers to delight the dear reader - not that I have any readers of course, but if you happen to stumble upon this you'll be delighted that I'm addressing you...yes you! Ok, get over it, and unleash all your critical powers. I can take it, honest...
Two new possible series, Science Around Us and Making Music (7-10 years). Quite liked the 'land of the giants' feel to the Science Around Us cover, though I know the 'plants' title typeface will be frowned upon internally, as it cuts up the full letter form a little with the 'a' and 'n'.
Music is big in schools these days - the concept is a little fuzzy right now, but it'll go into our Perspectives brand. Looking to do something fun and quite graphic - not too studious.

Ok, here are a couple of 2011 library cover designs, which are for UK/US market.
First up is Real Life Issues - a series on topics including Bullying, Domestic Violence, Absent Parents, Unemployment, Illness, and Moving Home. This is an intermediate level (8-10 yr) series, 32pp. I did a few alternative designs - here are two.

Next up is Children's Stories - a series following a childs experience of migration, in different sitautions. This is an intermediate level (8-10 yr) series, 32pp.

Ok, here's the big idea... to post current work in progress cover design for comment from the wider world. Everyone internally is able to comment on the design, from fonts and images, down to preferred shades of blue. What do other people think, outside of the company? What does the market think?
Anyway, that's the idea...let's see if it works?
