1. Sleep Training a Jerk Russell

I've been so tired lately. The last time I got a good night's sleep was...let's see...3 weeks ago? 4? I finally, finally scheduled an appointment to have a sleep study done. Hopefully, it will shed some light on my lifelong (yes, even as a baby) sleep troubles. Exhausted at work yesterday, helpful coworkers pointed out, "You look SO tired!" (I'd actually thought I looked pretty good.) Sexy Nerd

2. Sad Jack Russell

Pica has been dreaming about the posh new bed she's going to win, leaving her nights on the cold, hard floor behind her. What a mean mom and dad she has! ;) Our little troublemaker is behind in the competition though. If you have a free moment, please pop over to my Instagram to like Pica's contest entry. I think she's beautiful. Thank you! Thank you! (One from me and one from Pica. She's very

3. Caption Contest!

You know how cute weird it is when you come downstairs and find your husband asleep on the couch? Mine truly believes in sharing everything 50/50. "Move over, Dad." Have a better caption? Leave it in a comment below! (And, yes, our house is trashed right now. We'll clean the next one.) (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id))

4. Open Shelf Decorating Ideas: Sand and Sprinkles

Open shelves and glass cabinet doors are popular right now, but the stress of keeping them tidy can be a deal breaker. A great solution is to create a display that won't change often. Think fine china instead of everyday dinnerware. Cookbooks instead of your go-to coffee mugs. My favorite idea ever? A delicious wall of candy and sprinkles! We're going with an all-white kitchen in our new home

5. Chicken Curry Ramen Noodles Recipe

*Be sure to also check out my Cheesy Chicken Ramen recipe, which is a spin on macaroni and cheese. Yum! Let me start this post with a confession. I am a chocoholic, one who puts other chocoholics to shame. At work, I've developed an unfortunate reputation as the girl who pigs out every time another office sends us anything chocolaty or whenever an employee restocks our candy drawer. (Betcha

6. Construction Week 4 - Muuuch Better!

Remember all those terrible rocks I told you about? Well, right after my last construction post, we stopped having to worry about digging up giant sandstone boulders. Because once we got through all that annoying, expensive sandstone... ...we hit a solid sheet of GRANITE. (*sob*) But guess what? Just a few days later, the world's best construction crew had everything taken care of. Whew

7. Sexy Nerd Quote Of The Day

"I'm going to beat you with this frozen loaf." Muttered after I finished the last slice of thawed bread and didn't take a loaf out of the freezer. Yeah, he looks like a nice guy, but mess with his stockpile of bread and you'll incur the wrath of Sexy Nerd! *I'm a bit worried that someone is going to read this and email me information on women's shelters. Really, he hadn't had his

8. Good Deed Gone Awry

I've been having a lazy holiday weekend and haven't left the house since Thursday. Heck, I've barely even changed out of my pajamas. As you may recall, Sexy Nerd has no respect for a lazy, pajama-wearing afternoon (especially not when that afternoon stretches into 3 consecutive days) so he ditched me to go sort through rocks on our lot. Well, I decided I'd finally had enough of being a lazy bum.

9. Bad News! Construction Weeks 2 and 3

Everything went so smoothly during our first week of construction, clearing trees and dirt faster than we'd imagined, that we began to expect the entire process would be much easier than everyone had said. People have been voicing their concerns to us ever since we purchased our lot. Clearly, though, everyone else was wrong. Ha! First, the good: (Keeping with the theme of our last two weeks of

10. Will We Live Long Enough to See Our Dream Home Finished?

Or will we kill each other in the process? Last night was a lazy night, as was the night before. Every day and night has been lazy, with the exception of me researching tubs for our guest suite, which Sexy Nerd took no part in. So, imagine my frustration this morning, barely awake and getting ready for work, when a certain someone frantically demanded that I drop everything and choose a tub

11. Construction Photos

Construction on our mountain dream home, week one: (This is post 2 of 2. Click here for post 1 of 2.) See that fence? Don't get too used to it. The neighbors will be moving it onto their property any day now. If only we'd caught them before they'd paid someone to build it...and before the posts were cemented into place! (There's that neighborly guilt again.) Here's a

12. Construction Week 1

We broke ground last week and have been amazed by how quickly everything is rolling along. Within only 4 days, the crew created a driveway, cut down all necessary trees, removed all the waste (including a pile of wood from when our crazy neighbor cut down a bunch of our trees, much to our dismay, but that's a story for another day), dug a pit/created a mountain, and more! Photos from Week 1 of

13. The Biggest Time Wasters on the Internet

Today I will... ...stop wasting so much time on the internet! When Sexy Nerd and I were in Iceland last year, our Airbnb rental had Wi-Fi that worked great on his tablet and on his phone. On my tablet and on my phone? It did not work AT ALL. Weird, right? No matter how hard we tried (oh, how we tried!), my devices refused to acknowledge the existence of the perfectly functioning internet

14. The Biggest BBQ Mistake You Can Make

Summer has officially arrived, marked by 100+ degree weather here in Albuquerque, a haircut for Biscuit (she looks so tiny now!), and homemade burgers on our patio. I arrived home from work yesterday to find a buffet of topping options on our kitchen island, courtesy of Sexy Nerd, and we quickly got to work building the perfect burgers. I can never resist a unique sauce/dressing/topping/

15. Cake Mix Cookie Bars (That Actually Taste Like Cookies!)

There's no bad time for a chocolate chip cookie. A hearty bowl of oatmeal, mug of coffee, and a side of chocolate chip cookies? What a great way to start the day! Unfortunately, chocolate chip cookies are time consuming and kind of a pain to make, especially when you just want to eat the cookies right this instant. So, you try to save time and effort by baking a batch of cookie bars, but they

16. BIG NEWS!

Excerpt from an email I sent my BFF on 12/13/11:  A few months ago, Sexy Nerd and I were browsing land and houses online, not really planning to buy anything, and came across a listing for a 13.1 acre property in the mountains. It was described as having "various meadows and views of 4-5 mountain ranges", which seemed funny to us. We walked the property and, although we didn't find anything

17. A Healthy Recipe: KALE CHIPS (Also, No Recipe!)

You've probably noticed some changes to my blog lately. There's a new header almost weekly (I really like my new one and think it's here to stay...though I said the exact same thing about the last one, which is dead to me now), I'm posting more frequently, and I've been cleaning up some of the nonsense in old posts. Wow, there's so much nonsense!  Plus, I've completely done away with anything

18. Charming Stone Cottage

It was fun virtually shopping for a mansion last week, but I have something even better this time. A gorgeous home someone may actually be able to afford! To be fair, at $757,400 (weird asking price, right?) it's still fairly steep. But with a carriage house (I'll admit I'm not entirely sure what this is) and 137 acres (holy moly!), think of it as only $5,528 per acre with a free house (and

19. #MyDepressionLooksLike

903 steps by 5:21pm - and I've mostly been awake since 3am Tuesday, May 17th I wish I could talk to someone about depression but I don't know where to start and I worry it will be too expensive and I don't want to risk being dropped from my medical insurance. I was so happy this morning and now I just feel empty and there's no reason for it and it happens all the time. Even Derek doesn't

22. Give Me Ants at the Picnic Any Day

Sexy Nerd and I are finally, finally almost ready to break ground on our mountain dream home outside of Albuquerque, NM. How much longer has it taken than we'd expected? Well, I thought we'd have been living in the house a long time ago! We hiked our 13 acre lot yesterday, double checking the house placement and making sure the windows are correctly located to maximize the views. We have new

24. Late to the Party

Hey, guess what? Go to www.KittyDeschanel.com. After years and years of blogging, I finally have my very own custom domain name! It wasn't as expensive as I thought (hooray for online coupon codes!) and it was easy to do. Well...eventually it was easy. Funny enough, since Monday I have spent HOURS trying to figure out how to make my old site and new site work together. Then, reading the

25. A Bloody Stump of a Foot

We had a bit of a drama-filled afternoon today. I stepped out of the shower, only to discover the floor drenched in blood! Somehow, Pica had caught one of her toenails on her baby gate and ripped it right out. If she were a human baby, there'd surely be a lawsuit, right? Still, our poor little furbaby! One gigantic claw I held her steady as best I could. Jack Russell terriers don't really
