2. Creamy Butternut Squash Tomato Soup with Coriander and Lentils

What's for lunch you ask? Why Butternut Squash Tomato Soup with loads of coriander and ginger! I had these ingredients on hand and did some creative combining ....  The secret? A heaping tablespoon of ground coriander....with a bit of tumeric, ginger and nutmeg.
Simple Creamy Butternut Squash Tomato Soup

3/4 butternut squash, coarsely chopped
1 box of veggie broth ( 4 cups)
2 chopped onions
2 cloves garlic chopped
1 big can of diced tomatoes
3/4 cup of red lentils
1 T ground coriander
1 t Tumeric
1 t Ginger
1/2 t Nutmeg

Squeeze of lemon juice and a squirt of hot sauce at the end to taste!

Plop it all together in a pot and cook until squash tender. Puree with hand blender et voila!

3. Coincidental Connections

This is my art on the cover of Lesley Crewe's latest book!

Totally cool happenstance. I sell my work on a few "Microstock" sites and pretty much forget that I have art and images out there that are selling worldwide. I never know where they go. Well, sometimes I have stumbled across one or two, most notably one on Jamie Oliver's   website and the Philadelphia International Flower show used one on their poster, Oh and one was published in a book on Fashion through the Ages....and then there was a journal company in Brazil that used one, and one was used in a school textbook published in Hong Kong. (hmm I guess I know of more than I realized)  I get a check every few months and that is great, and I go back to my forgetting..

A couple of months ago I got an email from the Art Director at Nimbus which is an Atlantic Canada based publishing company. She told me she had picked my art for the cover of Lesley's' new book and not to be surprised when I start seeing it in bookstores and ads. She had chosen it from a Microstock site where images can be from anywhere in the world, liked liked mine  a lot and purchased it. She decided to research the creator and was delighted to discover I was a LOCAL artist!!  What a nice surprise to discover I was just down the street!

So I now have a copy ready to read thanks to Heather Bryan the art director. Lesley Crewe found me also as a result and now is a facebook friend and has some of my prints to brighten her wall! Happy all round....

4. Second-Hand Bookstores & their Treasures

Books. Used book stores = magic. I can happily spend unknown quantities of time browsing, reading, and looking for the perfect book. One that suits my mood or an unexpected treasure I did not know I wanted:)
There's a really special shop in Paris called Shakespeare and Company. Opened in 1951.  Tumbled towers of books and nooks and crannies stuffed with interesting titles and papers.

I created this bookstore like a man would write a novel, building each room like a chapter, and I like people to open the door the way they open a book, a book that leads into a magic world in their imaginations. —George Whitman

One day, after tea with its eccentric owner George, and a great chat, I left my cookbook with him, which would be stamped with their special mark and added to his shelves.
He gave me a book written by a friend of his from Nova Scotia which was a nice twist:)
I then went downstairs to browse and purchase something that caught my fancy.  I liked the look and sound of "The Museum Guard" and took it away with me...... only to discover the story was set in Halifax, N.S.! I was in Paris leaving a book written in Halifax and accidentally purchased one about Halifax!
But that is not what I wanted to tell you....
It is the hidden treasures occasionally found in used books that excite me even more than the book itself.
In "The Museum Guard", I found two train passes, probably used as bookmarks!  A return fare from Paris to Epernay, the centre of the Champagne district.

This book, now mine, was once a travelling companion to someone who left Paris at 5:50pm on Dec 31, most likely on their way to a New Year's Eve celebration!  Return was January 2.
I then noticed the name...Peter Slade.....
Well Mr. Slade, was it a fun evening? Did you get kissed at the stroke of midnight? Did it snow? Did you enjoy this book? Where are you now? ..... So many questions.
Mysterious bits of flotsam tucked between the pages and forgotten. Clues to a life lived that I can only imagine...
Another recent discovery was tucked into a second-hand book of Christopher Pratt images given to me by a good friend. He uncovered the addition when first poking through the pages and left them there for me to find:) Old stamps!  When a letter in Canada cost 43cents to post. Fun to find. The unexpectedness. The thrill of surprise
They were tucked into to a page with "stamps as art" that Mr. Pratt had created as a large installation for his dad's office. His dad loved stamps.

Just two weeks ago, I was in a favourite thrift shop and found an interesting book on Chinese medicine and women. Not what I was looking for but intriguing....
Once home, inside the pages I discovered a beautiful pressed lily!
It was a real gift. I was feeling quite sad that day and this flower felt like a message from a mysterious stranger crossing barriers of time and space. Once upon a time, that flower was bathed in sunlight and danced in the breeze.  Again questions.... What was the occasion? Why? What prompted the previous book owner to save the flower? Did they press it and forget? Tangible evidence of a memory, lost to them now but bequeathed to me, creating a new story.
Used bookstores and their treasures. Not all of them are the literary kind:) Oh, and check out this photobomb of a couple reflected in the mirror. My back was to them. I did not see them in this picture until now! They look wonderful.  Were they really there?

5. Kindness......

The other day I found myself deep down the rabbit hole that is the Internet and came across these words.....To touch someone with kindness, is to change someone forever.
Hmmmm.

Because for everyone you touch, you also reach everyone they will ever know, and everyone they will ever know, and everyone they will ever know......and so, your kindness will be felt, in waves that will spread, long after you move on.

When you are kind to someone, you shift something in them. The positive energy you direct their way lodges deep inside. It stays there like a tiny ember that glows in the dark for their lifetime. It can never be taken away. That energy is carried forward in all interactions they have from that day on. Your kindness has become part of who they are, whether they are aware of it or not.

Do something kind today. Say something thoughtful. Reach out.....

9. Courage

There is a tree I visit..... a tree that fills me with optimism. A tree that confounds and inspires. It is a beautiful example of the tenacity of life. It prevails given the tiniest opportunity. This tree is a living testament to strength and determination.
No matter where we stand on the spectrum of our time here, we are stronger than we realize.
Everyone wants to feel safe. Nobody wants to be scared. In our lives there will always be times when we need to dig deep to discover what we are capable of. “Courage is not having the strength to go on; it is going on when you don't have the strength.” -Theodore Roosevelt
So, hold on.....when you feel you cannot hang on a minute longer......you can. xo
“If you meet the darkest moment of life, strive valiantly through it with courage and never retreat, for you shall surely meet light afterwards. If you meet the muddy stream of life, swim across it with tenacity to the very end for there is a clearer stream that shall wash your dirt away afterwards. If people reject you in the mid of the arduous race of life, dare to smile and move on for there are people who await you to embrace you in the end” - Ernest Agyemang Yeboah

10. Autumn Streetscapes

Halifax city stroll in mid November....
I love finding contrasting colours of plants and buildings. Here many of our homes are painted with bright colours and the variety of combinations is endless.

Dinner as decor!
This porch appealed to me...maybe it was the bicycle...
Check out THIS door!

 and this beautiful detail work...
and this is our beautiful Halifax Central Library! Not quite in the same theme as the other pics but I took it today and loved it and love that library so much I thought i would share:)

11. Make it up as you go Soup!

Feeling headachy and off today:(  So I made some soup! You can too....

This is a make it up as you go soup. There is really no recipe, just use what you have in your house. Here's what I used today... 1 large chopped carrot, 1 large onion chopped (not in above pic) 4 cloves garlic minced, 3 Tablespoons curry powder, 1 bay leaf, 2 kaffir lime leaves ( I got a bag of them at a local Indian grocery store, they impart a lovely flavour but not necessary), 3 cardamon pods, 1/2 cup of red lentils, 1 cup of lentils rice and bean mix ( they were in a bag together), 1 Tablespoon grated ginger, 1 cup of frozen mixed veggies, 6 cups of veggie broth.
First I sauteed the onions in my new Christmas present cast iron pot, you can use oil but I don't...I just stir them and as they start to stick I add a bit of broth to unstick them. When they are golden, stop.
Next step is to just dump in the rest of the ingredients,  and add the rest of the broth
Throw in a handful of mixed frozen veggies. Of course you can add some fresh veggies, anything goes. I just didn't have anything on hand today.
Add some grated fresh ginger and simmer for about 40 minutes. If you are lucky enough to find some coconut milk in your cupboard you can add that too:)
Et voila!! So yummy !!. Enjoy.

12. November 5. Bits and Bobs...

From the archives! Taken 4 years ago today, November 5, 2012. 7:12am Point Pleasant Park, Halifax.

Swedish movie I want to see!

Fictitious Dishes. Meals from novels.... recreated

Writers retreat in Iceland. Imagine!

Memory tricks!!  A cool Ted talk.

Writing advice from Alan W Watts.......

“Advice? I don’t have advice. Stop aspiring and start writing. If you’re writing, you’re a writer. Write like you’re a goddamn death row inmate and the governor is out of the country and there’s no chance for a pardon. Write like you’re clinging to the edge of a cliff, white knuckles, on your last breath, and you’ve got just one last thing to say, like you’re a bird flying over us and you can see everything, and please, for God’s sake, tell us something that will save us from ourselves. Take a deep breath and tell us your deepest, darkest secret, so we can wipe our brow and know that we’re not alone. Write like you have a message from the king. Or don’t. Who knows, maybe you’re one of the lucky ones who doesn’t have to.”

13. The Colours of November...

November has always been a month of grey and gold to me. A solemn month. Shedding cloaks of autumn, it settles into simple homespun and subdued colour. Closing into itself
Days shorter and nights darker. I am one of the few that enjoy November. I like the stillness and the winding down. A quiet month. Settling into new routines, preparing for the harsh months hovering so uncomfortably near.
November smells of cinnamon and pumpkin and earthy leaves and wood smoke. Sullen dove soft skies and breathless air. November is also wild storms and damp days, intense sunsets and stark blue skies. Winds that shear away  remaining leaves and send them tumbling across the landscape. There is a restrained turbulence to the month of November. Come close and warm your hands by the fire....
“November--with uncanny witchery in its changed trees. With murky red sunsets flaming in smoky crimson behind the westering hills. With dear days when the austere woods were beautiful and gracious in a dignified serenity of folded hands and closed eyes--days full of a fine, pale sunshine that sifted through the late, leafless gold of the juniper-trees and glimmered among the grey beeches, lighting up evergreen banks of moss and washing the colonnades of the pines. Days with a high-sprung sky of flawless turquoise. Days when an exquisite melancholy seemed to hang over the landscape and dream about the lake. But days, too, of the wild blackness of great autumn storms, followed by dank, wet, streaming nights when there was witch-laughter in the pines and fitful moans among the mainland trees. What cared they? Old Tom had built his roof well, and his chimney drew.” - L.M. Montgomery

16. 10,000 Steps

Soooooo..... 10,000 steps. At first glance you think jeeze that's a lot and then when you figure it out it hmmm, that doesn't seem so difficult...... but getting it done is! The breakdown is approximately 1000 steps for ten minutes of walking. 100 minutes of walking = 10,000 steps! 10,000 steps roughly equals 5 miles/8 km  a day. That is throughout your entire day. Putting it into practice is a whole other ball game! I thought I was active but when I looked back on my steps over the year..it averages out to 4500 daily! Yikes. (I am happy to say I've since managed bumped it up to 9,000) Now I just have to keep it there!

Side note: I don't have a fitbit or jawbone or any of those devices. I have an iPhone! My friend has a fitbit and one day we were discussing how it has transformed her activity level in a very positive way. She asked if I had an iPhone and then told me that there is a health app that comes with the phone, that tracks your steps! I had no idea! I had never even looked at that app. Well I had a look and was so surprised to see it had been counting all along. I realize I don't have it on me all the time but even adding an extra 1-2000 steps to compensate for that did not bring me to what is considered the minimum for good activity.
This is a view snapped on my phone while walking on the Bayers Lake rails to trails path right in the heart of a busy Industrial/shopping area. I was doing some errands and squeezed in a 10 minute walk. They add up.

So I have been more mindful of my personal activity levels and am trying to get out for a good walk every day, parking farther from the grocery store, getting up from my computer and moving and generally squeezing in action where I can. I am feeling the benefits all ready. This site explains some of the advantages too. Really though.... it is just about moving more. We need to shake that booty! xo

17. Days of Our Lives....

One of my favourite things is to sit with a blank sheet of paper or journal and a pen and a head full of ideas. If I don't write them down, I lose some of those thoughts and brilliant light bulb ideas and whims and basic things I HAVE to get done. Just like a kettle boiling water into steam, away they go.....
Spilling them onto paper they become real and possible. They become tangible, I can see them and new lists form creating steps to making things happen.

Even just what I want to accomplish in a day becomes easier when I jot it down. Somehow I tend to get more done.

Dreams and schemes....... Autumn is coming......

20. Common Roots Urban Farm

Deep in the heart of the city of Halifax there is a farm! Right next to one of the busiest intersections in Halifax. Common Roots Urban Farm
Things are growing! There are private plots and public plots. Everywhere you see a green stake, you can nibble and pick things. Look at this abundance of tomato!
Bazillions of flowers are growing, and the gentle buzz of bees can be heard over the traffic.
It is a living breathing oasis right next to the QE2 Hospital on Robie Street and Bell Road.
From Tuesdays to Fridays 11:30-5:30 you can purchase lovely veggies and flowers and compost and gardeny things. These charming gals might be on hand to help you:)
Look at these!! I bought some purple beans. Alas they turned green when I cooked them but yum! so good.
Charities and interested groups have garden beds here too. Here is a story about the Paramedic's garden
Pop by and have a stroll...
Buy some flowers. Do yourself a world of good and help support a wonderful initiative!

22. Re-cap Paint Day April 24

Paint, glorious paint!  Once again I had a lot of fun at my painting workshop on April 24th. It was held at one of my favourite places, Fruition Cafe on Coburg Road.
What a great bunch of diligent bunch of artists (when they weren`t laughing!) I painted along with them as well as instructing. We were recreating a lighthouse and beautiful coloured sky.

 Sunset or dawn...hmmmm.
We laid out the paintings to dry and make room on the tables for a yummy lunch. Gorgeous!
Then we were back at it! Listening to Motown music and painting up a storm.
I painted the sides of the canvases before the workshop and the green tape keeps them free from paint. We just peel it off after.

Tah dah! The paintings are wonderful!! All the same and yet different. Thanks so much everyone. I had a lovely time:)
Next one is MAY 15TH, you can find out more HERE!

23. Forest Bathing....

I had a Forest Bath the other day.... a walk in the woods....something we should all try to do as often as we can:) I have always felt better in myriad ways after a walk under the trees but did not realize it is a "thing." Shinrin-Yoku is the Japanese name for it.

Time spent in the forest has been proven to lower stress levels by reducing cortisol, elevates your mood and strengthens your immune system.   All you need to do is visit a forest for a short stroll in the green and living space, maybe sit a bit and soak it all up.
When in the forest we breathe in volatile substances, called phytoncides (wood essential oils), which are antimicrobial volatile organic compounds derived from trees; listen to the wind in the branches, birds and streams if nearby. All things which are calming...  We move with gentle purpose, soaking up the living energy. It is a form of meditation in which we unknowingly participate. In Japan there are now 44 accredited Shinrin Yoku forests. I love this idea.
Sleeping In The Forest
I thought the earth remembered me, she
took me back so tenderly, arranging
her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds. I slept
as never before, a stone
on the riverbed, nothing
between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated
light as moths among the branches
of the perfect trees. All night
I heard the small kingdoms breathing
around me, the insects, and the birds
who do their work in the darkness. All night
I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling
with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

 -Mary Oliver
Pictures were taken in Hemlock Ravine with the exception of the first pic which was in Alberta.

This a simple and really yummy salad! Fresh and bright.
All you need is fennel (sort of like a mild licorice flavoured celery) two or three grapefruit, avocado, a tiny bit of maple syrup or a pinch of brown sugar, oil and salt and pepper.
Rinse the fennel and chop off the fronds. Take the outer covering/leaves off if hard and scarred. Chop into narrow slices and also use a wee bit of frond. Toss into bowl.
Next up, peel the grapefruit and pit and slice into thin slices. Save half of one to squeeze the juice into the bowl. You can ALSO use oranges, in fact that is what is usually used.
With oranges you need NO sweetener. Toss the fruit into bowl with fennel. If your grapefruit is super sour or bitter, drizzle a teeny bit of maple syrup on top or sprinkle brown sugar. If it is sweet, don't bother.
Chop up the avocado and add to bowl. Drizzle all over with a bit of olive oil and add salt and pepper. Mix gently and let marinate for a half hour or so.
The juice from the citrus and the oil make the dressing. You could also toss in some pine nuts, add arugula and pitted kalamata olives to really zizz it up ! It is a lovely light and simple salad.

25. Show of Costume 1869

This is happening tomorrow night! Friday April 15. My daughter is in the Costume Studies Program at Dalhousie and her final year culminates with this event! She has chosen to represent Fanny Westphal McNab who would have attended the Ball with her Fiance, Sydenham Howe, Joseph Howe's son. She has designed and created from scratch, the undergarments (even a corset!) using authentic materials, and a gorgeous19th century Ballgown! She is still working on finishing it. Burning the midnight oil with all the others in this course. It is a tremendous amount of work.

They each had to research and write a paper on the person they chose, someone who would have lived in Halifax and attended the Ball in 1869. Snippets about each person will be read as they model their dresses. There will also be a Viennese Waltz performed by the students and wine and nibbles served afterward.I am looking forward to it!!!
Still a few tickets left but not many. You can purchase them HERE
