School Days by Clarence Mathews and Deneen Mathews - Art Process for cover plus 2 b/w illustrations

Can you imagine a time without TV, cell phones, heat, running water and electricity? Take a trip with Jacob to a real place in time and experience School Days. Great FAMILY reading. A MUST HAVE for every child's library.
School Days narrates the life of young Jacob, an enthusiastic four-year old, who couldn't wait to turn six and attend school with his older brother and sisters. The story illustrates Jacob's school days both in the country and in the city.
The country school house was a little three room building, modestly furnished with the bare essentials. There was no electricity, no running water, and children walked miles just to get to school. When Jacob's family moved to the city, Jacob was excited to discover that his new home and the big city school were loaded with much more than he could imagine!

3. HeidiSongs 1-100 Children's Book

Here is a new book available at HeidiSongshttp://heidisongs.blogspot.com/ that teaches kids to count to 100. I worked on this book earlier this year. It was outlined in Adobe Illustrator and colored in Photoshop.  This book allowed me to just be creative with few restraints.  It was one of my favorite ones to do this year.

4. The Energy Bus for Kids - Children's Book

Here are some samples of The Energy Bus for Kids that I illustrated written by Jon Gordon.  It is in stores now so I hope you go check it out.  I had a lot of fun illustrating this book back in March and April.  There are about 40 illustrated pages in it so I hope your kids have fun with it.

6. Puffy Sticker Designs

Here are some sticker designs I did for Red Star Holdings in China. I made these last year around Christmas time.
I just got some in the mail as stickers so maybe you will see them in stores sometime. They are designed to be those puffy stickers.
Also, I designed the backgrounds for the stickers. All of this was done in Adobe Illustrator.

7. SuperFlowers Comic

These are comic panels I did to promote an online flower ordering website opening soon.  There is destruction, mayhem, and lots of online flower ordering that saves the day!  I enjoyed working in a quick and loose style (but still outlined with ink)

9. Illustrated DVD Cover

This is my first illustrated DVD cover by DigiView Entertainment. It has 4 episodes on it. 1 episode is about 4 ants (Hence the bugs in the title and in the boat) but the other 3 are about a wolf, fox, and chickens (Hence having them at the front) Little weird. I know.

I am happy at how it turned out. The layout on the back may or may not be finished completely.  It is all in vector with Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to try doing something like the kid's board game illustrations out in stores. I think these DVDs will be at Wal-Mart, Dollar General, and other stores that sell DVDs for about $1 or so.

10. Hidden Object Picture

Here is a Hidden Objects illustration of Paul speaking in the marketplace. I did this last August for David C. Cook publishing. It was a hard working all the objects into the picture without being too obvious. See if you can find these objects - key, octopus, seal, spoon, bell, cupcake, hairbrush, carrot, mitten, roller skate, and snake. I think that is all of them.

Here is the sketch for it. I had to change some things, but I think this is one of the biggest crowd scenes I have done cartoon/realistic style.

15. Frankenstein, Candy Corn, and more

I've been working on a bunch of project to show soon. In the meantime, here are some spooky designs I did back in August when I had a little free time. BOO!

Be very afraid! The first one reminds me of the Brady Bunch setup of Halloween characters.

The second is a sample invitation I did. Please don't show up at that house.

16. Illustrator in Honduras!

I just got back from a trip to Honduras. I illustrated the book, A Sharefish Tale, for the non profit group Sharefish.org. The book will be out in print sometime in December or January. The goal is to use the money from the book sale to buy more books forthe library in El Corrizo, Honduras.

Sharefish was created as organization to improve education, nutrition, housing, medical and economic opportunities in impoverished communities. Sharefish is currently focused on improving the lives of children in two small communities in southern Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere.

On our trip, the goal was to celebrate "Dia del Nino" with the kids. "Dia del Nino" is a national celebration to honor children. The kids were able to make crafts, jump rope, read new books, and draw pictures. I took down some of my Doodlin' Pads to donate to the library.

When the book is available, I will let you know. Below are a few pictures from the trip. My goal as an illustrator is to hopefully do more of these trips. I want my art to be more than a picture. I want to use it to help others.

25. Another Book - Sara & Geoffrey: Clothes for New Friends

I'm just about done with illustrating another book. This one is about a brother and sister team (along with a toy lion) that provide new clothes for kids from around the world.

I had fun working on a new color style for this book. I like the backgrounds a lot on the pages. I'll add more hopefully later. Hope you enjoy these!
