6. The Classic Recipe

With a long weekend ahead of me I was eager to extend its pleasure by kickstarting it off Friday evening. And what could be a simpler solution than a film. But it seemed that I had exhausted my collection so I began re-looking old folders hoping to surprise myself with a find in some corner. The only titles around seemed so promisingly boring that I quickly got onto IMDB to double cross check whether or not they were to be evening spoilers.

And thats how 'Sunset Boulevard' happened. The extravagantly vintage sounding title held a 8.7 rating on IMDB. What could be more inviting!

In gutthiyon ka jawab bas kuch meel door sagar ki tat par hai

Iss din ka mann nahin karta

Ki woh aankhein khole

Ki gutthiyon ka jawab ab bas mutti bar door hai.

8. Christmas time! Home Decor

Really enjoyed doing up home for Christmas again. Its such a must to bring on the seasons flavours. Mom started with cake baking and then we did up the house together. From putting up the Christmas tree to mom's innovative crib making styles, they'll all a part of treasured growing up memories for me.

2. The room from behind the veiled curtains
3. The tree to the right corner of the room and the crib to the left

9. You Rock Mr. Jobs!!

This article shall hold the dearest place on my blog for a long long time. Firstly, coz its about one of the greatest design thinkers of the 21st century and secondly because the article throws light on the importance he gave to design thinking. Also I can't resist mentioning that he is such a fine example of handsomeness and brains. He sure was some deadly man ;P

Steve Jobs' Legacy: Design Your Own Life (By Nilofer Merchant - Harvard Business Review blog)

While there are many things worth celebrating of Steve Jobs' life, the greatest gift Steve gave us is a way to design our own lives.

Steve Jobs was known for being a design god who sweated experience, and pixels and, well, everything. "Design," he once said, "is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But, of course, if you dig deeper, it's how it really works. You have to grok what it is all about."

In our society, thinking for ourselves is not highly valued. Our education model was designed with the 19th centu

10. We are Birds of the Boundless Sky

This would be one of my favourite poems. Used to recite it pretty innocently while at school. Here's a translation of the same off a website:

We are Birds of the Boundless Sky- ShivMangal Singh Suman

We are birds of the boundless sky

Caged, we cannot sing.

Battered against these golden bars

Break, shall the delicate wing.

We who drink of free flowing waters,

Shall die of hunger and thirst.

Far better

Raat khamosh kade intzaar kare mera, ki mai kuch kahoon,

Ke wada tha oon se ki aaj guphtagu hogi.

Kuch raaz honge, kuch sikayatein hongi, kuch izhar hoga.

Par na jaane kyun, aaj zubaan khushk si hai.

Din masroof tha.

Uske raftar mein mehfil nahin jami.

Ke woh kabhi sawaloon pe utthe jawab, toh kabhi jawabon pe utthe sawaalon ki pemaish kar sake.

Lehaza, kuch der, kisson ko dibbe mein baand kiya gaya.

Kisse barte gaye, dhakkan kasakta gaya.

Aur phir,

Raat aata hai.

Sabr ka chadar bechata hai, sukoon ka wada karta hai.

Par na jaane kyun, ab zubaan khushk si hai.

12. The Perfume

Wisps of winter in the air.

An ever so slight fog hangs here and there.

The orbs of yellow streetlights look so much warmer.

The smell of a burnt off cracker around the corner.

There's the sweet smell of the Gulachin flowers.

There are memories of gift boxes arriving home, shining like the stars.

Of holidays when children played around without a care.

Of love that hung gingerly in the seasonal air.

Like the subtleness of an alluring perfume that you could never perfectly define.

Such are sweet October memories of mine.

13. Ik Baat

Late night obsessing over Javed Akhtar's poetry as recited by Farhan in 'Zindagi Na milegi Dobara'. An illustration for another one of my favorites from the movie.

Ik baat honton tak hai jo aayi nahin
Bas ankhon say hai jhaankti
Tumse kabhi, mujhse kabhi
Kuch lafz hain woh maangti
Jinko pehanke honton tak aa jaaye woh
…Aawaaz ki baahon mein baahein daalke ithlaye woh
Lekin jo yeh ik baat hai
Ahsas hi ahsas hai

Khushboo si hai jaise hawa mein tairti
Khushboo jo be-aawaaz hai
Jiska pata tumko bhi hai
Jiski khabar mujhko bhi hai
Duniya se bhi chupta nahin
Yeh jaane kaisa raaz hai

- Penned by Javed Akhtar & beautifully recited by Farhan Akhtar

Saw 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' today. Kudos for its simplicity coz simple is tough. I felt even the slightly awkward acting at times helped to fit in, into the mood of this script.

At the time of its release most people, I recall, talked of it being a one time watch film. And it surprises me a tad bit coz its rare when one feels like watching a film more than once.
Many people discarded the film as its plot line reminded them of 'Hangover' (the film got branded as its Indian remake). Others felt its meat was more like 'Dil Chahta Hai'.

Despite these glaring similarities I liked the film simply because the amazing feeling of being completely free seeped out of the film to me. The director has obviously done some brilliant piece work there. I even enjoyed watching Katrina for once. But most of all I loved the little poems Farhan kept musing over throughout the film. The last one would be one of my favorites.

Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyan leke chal rahe ho, toh zinda ho tum

Nazar mein khwabon ki bijliyan leke chal rahe ho, toh zinda ho tum

Hawa ke jhokon ke jaise aazad rehna sikho

15. Birthday surprise for Daddy!!

Dad's 60th birthday was coming up and I thought it did be fun to dress up the party room like you did do it for kids :D Our living room has huge cream walls and white windows and the chairs we were hiring for the guests had rich red covers.

So I decided that I did have to do something by throwing some more red color around the room and to add a classy contrast ch choose one more color.

Youtube had several DIY paper projects especially origami DIYs. So the first few days I spent trying out different origami animals. It was damn painful especially when you went all wrong and made a monster at the end of it.

The flying crane I discovered to be the easiest of the lot and considering that I needed to mass produce I perfected it.

Next I headed out to the mad mad Sadar bazaar and fetched loads of paper for cheap

21. Drunken Direction Signs

'First Floor Bar and Restaurant' is a little known beer bar located in Asia's largest IT hub, Nehru Place, New Delhi, India. They approached to us with their problem of not being able to attract too many customers to the bar - their presence getting lost amongst the millions of electronic shops and signboards around. So we came up with an unique SOLUTION :).

The response to this quirky activation-al experiment was overwhelming. The bar reported a 62% increase in footfall in a fortnight ! In a country where experimental advertising is only coming to age, the success of this activation is hopefully going to convince many more clients to experiment with fresh and fun alternative techniques of advertising.

23. Ambient/Guerilla Advertising, India

ACTIVATION – DRUNKEN DIRECTION SIGNS

‘FIRST FLOOR’ -a pub located in Asia’s largest IT hub Nehru Place, Delhi. Around 2 million visit this marketplace everyday. Despite this large plausible customer base ‘FIRST FLOOR’ remained lost amongst zillions of shops. The challenge was to make consumers take notice of ‘First Floor’ and direct them to it.

Being a hardcore IT Hub, Nehru Place has a very serious feel to it, it being visited mostly by people buying computer goods or working in the shops. And in general they don’t consider it to have options to chill out.

We decided, that an unusual medium with a visual frolic would be the perfect advertising solution, to attract customers to the pub. Our strategy in the form of the ‘Human Drunken Direction Signs’ was to be visually and literally a humourous take on the joy of getting sloshed at a pub.
Nehru Place is infested with billboards and posters. The regulars have learnt to ignore them. These have turned into blind spots. Any traditional medium would just not have attracted any attention in this environment.
