3. Hey there!

It's Banned Books time and I read many interesting articles this week.  I can understand the reluctance for schools and libraries to regulate what children are reading - to a point...  I've spent countless hours at libraries and schools and some parents simply don't pay attention to what books their kids have in their hands.  Let's face it some material may not be suitable for the little kids.  I don't think a 9-year old is ready for Hunger Games even though their AR reading level may include it (it's one of my favorite books).   As a parent, I appreciate the trust in my school librarian that my children won't be reading something they aren't able to rationalize yet.

As a writer, I say screw that!  Some of the of my most valuable lessons in life have been learned by reading something uncomfortable or would be banned.

Let us write and hopefully parents will parent.

7. Janie

Let me tell you about Janie.  She is a delightfully annoying 11-year old girl with the persistence of a toothache.  She is part of  Helping Hands girls' club.  They hold monthly competitions and Janie is determined to win the Helping Hands trophy from the shampoo-commercial-quality-haired, Summerlin.  Her challenge is to demonstrate an act of kindness and make a positive and lasting difference in a life.  Summerlin always wins these challenges and Janie's fed up.  Janie wants the trophy!  Convinced Summerlin will probably end world hunger, find a cure for arthritis or donate a kidney, Janie must come up with something spectacular to win.

When she discovers Bob, the lobster in her refrigerator is scheduled to be lunch that very afternoon, that's her ticket to the trophy!  She will save him.  Because saving a lobster from boiling to death is very kind, positive and lasting!

But saving him isn't as easy as she thought.  After failed attempts including a run-in with a lady smelling of salami, Bob disappearing and super-gluing the refrigerator door shut (which made her parents really mad), the water is boiling and time has run out.

Will she save Bob in time and win the trophy?  Will Summerlin beat her again?

Find out and read - Janie!

Also, I found an interesting link http://www.campaignforrealbeauty.com/.  This is Dove's self-esteem boosting website for women and girls. Similar to Janie, we all benefit from acts of kindness and positive reinforcement.  Take a look.

8. Fun Read

Looking for something easy, childish and simply fun to read?  I was looking through my bookshelf the other day and came across some books that have made me smile and laugh out loud time and time again.

Here are a few suggestions to curl up on the couch with and since we're in kid mode - grab a bag of Cheetos or a mug of hot chocolate and let the whipped cream dot stay on your nose until someone else notices.  Even if they don't - I guarantee you'll laugh about it....

I always enjoy...

Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great and Fudge
Olivia
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing
The entire collection of Roald Dahl books
The Eddie Dickens triology

Funny, funny books!

9. Inspirational Cardinal

Whenever I feel uninspired to write, I try many thngs.  Putting the material aside for awhile, starting the paragraph, scene, or sentence over (there is something liberating in the "delete" button).  Sometimes I take a walk.  But I find the single most important source of inspiration for me is... football.  And not arena football, college football or friday night lights - I mean #13, red and white, 38-year old with a bad hip, Kurt Warner and the rest of the Arizona Cardinals.

I find such a boost from the team because I think they're a lot like me.  Sometimes the passes, running plays and touchdowns are smooth, concise and effortlessly executed just like a great day of writing.  Other days they are misguided, confused and pretty much stink - just like a crappy day of writing.  But I learn from them.  I learn that some days are productive, some are not so.  But all the same, you show up and you try - day after day.

Last year my favorite underdogs made it all the way to the Superbowl.  They turned the heads of a lot of critics and won the hearts of others.  So who knows - I hope we really are alike.  If I work hard enough and try, try, try - maybe someday I'll have my own Superbowl and maybe Kurt will sign it!

Tomorrow - I'm off to watch the game in PHX!!

10. A Bittersweet Day --

I had a great day and a bad day recently.

The good:  I was contacted by an agent about a manuscript that I submitted.  She was delightful and complimentary which made me jump up and down like the nine-and-a-half-year-old school girl in my story.

It may go nowhere and if that's the case, surely I'll be disappointed.  However, I feel much more confident in my writing from her words of encouragement.  It's that boost I needed to continue writing and know I will find a place for my work.

The bad:  My world lost a lovely woman.  A friend and former 4th grade teacher passed away at the much too early age of 61.  She was the first person I let review any of my writing. I shudder to think how awful it was!!!!  But she was tactful and considerate.

Her smile and fantastic laugh will certainly be missed.  And all the children that she guided throughout the years are the lucky ones!

11. 2010 Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market Book

Hello -

If any of you haven't done so already, the 2010 Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market book is something you should have on hand.

Not only is it useful when trying to get something published, but it offers many interviews, comments and helpful tips from published authors.

Even if you aren't searching the book for viable publishers, it's interesting to see what they are or aren't looking for.  Of course we shouldn't follow trends, but it is helpful to see what is popular and what isn't.

Have a great day!

12. Different Perspective

Just spent the evening with my 86-year old grandmother-in-law.  She's amazing and sharp as a tack.  She shared with me her journals that she started a couple of years ago.  The stories she's written - not on a computer - but with her often uncooperative hands are interesting to say the least.  They reflect on everything she's experienced in her life.  She's an immigrant of Holland and the oldest of 10 children.  It was fascinating to read her perspective and her memories.  She's certainly experienced joy and loss.  She's known what it feels like working hard just to survive.  Such a story there.....

13. SCBWI LA

Attended the conference in LA a couple of weeks ago. It was an incredible experience. My brain was exhausted but filled with ideas!

The keynote speakers were inspiring - particularly Karen Cushman. She was delightful and funny. Reminding us all to write from the heart!!

I'm off...to do just that!

Great day all!

Allison
