Parenting with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) presents a unique set of challenges for the person with this condition. Not that parenting isn’t challenging enough, no? Diagnosed with PTSD, depression, and anxiety, I have weathered years of guilt regarding my parenting skills. Have I connected enough emotionally with them? Have I shown them enough affection? […]

Good sex can be hard to come by. Especially if you’ve been married for awhile. When I turned 30, hormones of the amorous nature began their attack. I had no idea how to deal with these hormones and the increase in my libido. I was understandably uncomfortable with asking for what I wanted. The results […]

Teachers are the best people on earth. I taught elementary school for ten years and more, and Husband teaches junior high and high school music. My love for teachers flows deep and wide. All of the teachers I know are starting to have stress dreams about the beginning of school, from showing up in underwear […]

I got my I can do hard things necklace almost five years ago now. I asked for it for my birthday, and I requested that it come with a second disk engraved with the phrase, “That’s what she said.” My loved ones, of course, complied. My life keeps circling back around to this phrase: I […]

There are only a few precious days until my Portland to Coast walk that is dedicated to my friend, Nanea, and her fight against breast cancer. To be completely honest, I wrote about it and thought, okay, that’s enough, I don’t have time to do anything else. Fundraising? I’m sure it’s too late. Then Nanea […]

My AT&T guy* recently emailed me to ask if I would abandon the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge to try the LG G5, you know, for something different. I’m not gonna lie, I groaned. I mean, is there a better phone out there than the Samsung Galaxy? And I’m lazy. But I also LOVE to try […]

I eavesdrop. All the time. If I am sitting around you, looking innocent and as if I am thinking of something else, I am listening to your conversation. Hard. On a bus, in a coffee shop, walking down the street. Anytime, anywhere. I don’t eavesdrop to be mean or violate people’s privacy – I’m not […]

At a recent counseling appointment, my therapist reminded me how emotional this time of year can be. In two weeks, I will be on a Portland to Coast walking relay team, handing off an extremely sweaty snap bracelet to one another as we finish each of the legs. What is This P2C Walk You Speak […]

I am honored to be performing on Sunday night with Get Nervous, one of the best storytelling outlets in Portland. As many of you know, I do my best storytelling through stand up comedy, and my jokes about living with anxiety and depression will find a good home here, I think. Get Nervous is a reading […]

I’m so excited to join the Round Table Readers this week in Tacoma! On the first Wednesday of each month, this group of lively readers joins up to have some lunch and discuss the latest work from a guest author. I’ll be talking about grief and hope and death and laughter and, of course, caskets […]

I’m not one to post about political stuff, especially Trump. The current political climate results in panic attacks for me personally, so I do a lot of hiding of Facebook posts and deleting emails. HOWEVER, I have had several experiences involving hearing the word “Trump” used not in reference to the person himself, but as […]

Sometimes I just get tired of peeing my pants. Oldest, being the germ factory he is, lovingly shared his summer cold with me. Taken at face value, this cold was pretty good as far as illnesses go. The only symptoms were a scratchy, dry throat and some fatigue, but otherwise I felt pretty good. Until the […]

My kids don’t know about Pokemon Go yet. We don’t live under rocks, so I’m not sure how this game has not happened in our lives. I’m not complaining; I am honestly stunned that I haven’t been dragged out into the world to play Pokemon Go. Pokemon Go is all the rage right now, and […]

My favorite part of teaching was when students would struggle. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t relish the idea of causing people undue pain. The simple truth is that true learning grows from discomfort and struggle. I didn’t say it would be a nice and fluffy truth, but there it is. In my ten years […]

This remains one of my favorite deals – who doesn’t like a free Slurpee? And if you don’t like free 7/11 Slurpees, go with a friend who *does* like them and give them yours! Win-Win! The 7/11 Slurpee – besides being a fun drink and word to just say over and over (try it) – […]

I like to think I am up for any adventure. I imagine that I handle physical challenges with grace and dignity. Except when I don’t, and I’m reminded that I’m more book smart than sport smart. Still, every once in a while, I’ll convince myself that I want to take life by the gonads and […]

The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. For us, it means camping, drinking beer (in moderation, of course), parades, candy (also in moderation, at least for me), and many games of Yahtzee. Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, have an awesome and safe July 4th celebration.

Happy birthday, America! And what would a celebration be without some groan-inducing jokes? Seriously, these are really bad. I did not write them, thank goodness. They may make you sad, unless you’ve had a couple, then they might be okay. The one here on the left is just a sampling of the really terrible jokes […]

Social media is the worst. Usually I love social media. Various forms of social media are simply part of my career as an author and comedian. I love the relationships that I’ve been able to build with people I haven’t ever met in real life. I enjoy sharing my creativity with the world through funny […]

As I’ve written about in Caskets From Costco, I almost died when having my children. I am not above reminding them of it, especially to get what I want. Nor am I above using the same reminders on Husband, who occasionally thinks he can forget how awesome I am and get away with it. Just […]

My wonderful friend Rachel Thompson stopped by Wilson Writes to talk about Brock Turner, the rapist whose now 3-month sentence is basically making the heads of all sexual assault survivors everywhere explode from disbelief, disgust, and the desire to change a culture that condones rape. ****** You may have read about the sickeningly short six-month […]

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I am fortunate to have my friend Lindsay Fischer join us on the blog today, talking about mental illness and fear. ************* It’s a common occurrence in conversation, describing people by their diagnoses as if it encapsulates exactly who they are. She’s being schizo. He’s bipolar. While I’m […]

It’s hard not to eavesdrop when you’re alone…especially when people are squawking into phones or Bluetooth earpieces. It’s like eavesdrop manslaughter. You do it, but it wasn’t premeditated or on purpose.
LOL I love that – “Eavesdrop manslaughter”! That’s an awesome way to put it.
