And they're off! The US Postal service just happened to issue perfectly coordinating stamps to complete the look. Can't wait to see how they get a little banged up on their route so they look like vintage circus "pitch" cards!

Hey all! please check out this fun "kickstarter" project by a really talented and inspiring friend of mine, Bryan Ballinger. I'm sharing it with you because its a book that needs to be done, a subject that is a staple around my house and many others. The deadline is drawing near, and even a small pledge will make a difference. All the pledge levels are easy and come with an awesome gift. How you can you pass up a faux fart ringtone? I know I can't! Just go look...

Seems like forever since this project (and my last post!) written by my friend Hope Vestergaard was proposed to me by our then agent Anna. It's a special project that deserved the best in me, which was a tough dig through my soul consuming day job fog. Hope & I are breaking traditional submission rules to get her out there. And yes, the very things I made fun of newbies for, when I thought I knew it all. Humble pie anyone? But despite it all, Birdie has finally wrapped her way around my heart, up to the surface and now she's ready to fly! I'm so in love with her... Read the rest of this post
It's that time of year again. Among other summer projects, I'm getting ready for the Bologna Children's Book Fair 2013. This is a little sneak preview of the project I'm submitting. Five paintings due typically around September. This book is about, well, I'm actually not going to give it away just yet....I'll just hint that it was inspired while working in the school kitchen at the tail end of summer last year. I studied these little guys a lot. zzzz!
a video meant to entertain...and only one facet of how the industry works. for better viewing please watch on YouTube.
enjoy!
Can't believe so much time has passed since my last posting....
My Summer was busy with moving, the Fall busy with my day job and settling into a new routine. This winter I was blessed with good friends and family who helped me get back on track. So here's to 2012, clink! May it be healthy, happy and wise for you all. Better yet, full of hope and dreams come true!
My author & illustrator friends have put together their own It Gets Better video. They speak for us all...I am so proud of them!
I just worked on a really cool project called The Little Blue Letter. It was a book used to deliver personalized letters to each of the winners of Hopscout's Stay at Home Millionaire job search. The illustration job, commissioned by an even cooler agency, Agency 215, was a fast turn around. I painted 13 panels, and they put together and designed the book in 7 days. In fact, the time frame was so short that I was able to really just set aside life and completely indulge in painting till it was done. I am very proud of the results and secretly thrilled at the high I got from being able to do so. I feel like I should be inserting an academy award style speech here because I really could not have done it without the support of my daughter, friends, my boss, agent and the spectacular team at 215. I'll just simply say thanks!
Finally got my Etsy store The Scarlet Pig up and running. I put together (still working on it) a selection of book art and original illustrations. This summer I'll be working on a series of opera bags and a few other fun things related to my children's books. Please be sure to check in with my shop from time to time so you don't miss a thing. All pieces will be unique and a limited run. Once they're gone, they're gone...thanks!
These kids got brains. In a recent letter to the editor, the students made it clear that they love picture books despite what the adults and a recent article in the New York Times say is the new trend. Without putting words in their mouths, please read the full article here. They really made my day and my career worth it. Thanks Birch Lane Elementary!
Please visit and like the facebook page started and supported by a community of children's book authors & illustrators who want to send the love back to the students for speaking up, thanks!
... of the artistic kind. I was thrilled to have an art installation in the new studio and home of Imagine Ballet Theatre, but even more thrilled to have it during a recent party for United Way of Northern Utah. I made some fantastic connections, met some great folks, had a terrific new drink called Underground (locally distilled even!) and had my three worlds all come together. The show was called "Art in the Raw" where I displayed my illustrations, no framing, clipped to a wire and invited guests to get really close so they could see all the details & paint strokes that are often lost in reproduction. Looking forward to visiting with the Untied Way folks more often in the future.
