What?!
These pictures have nothing to do with water!… unless you think about watering the ‘Head Plant’ but that’s not what I mean. I’ve been struggling with how to depict water in a book I’m working on this week. I’ve painted the water, erased the water, and started over several times already! I decided I needed to clear my head and work on some pieces that were completely unrelated. Sketchoholics
unite!
Maybe I’ll post about the water later
.

And so am I! Coming to town that is. Last winter I worked on the illustrations for ‘Cop’s Night Before Christmas’ by Michael Harrison and published by Pelican Publishing. This next week I will have my first book signing as an illustrator! I’m a little nervous and excited. There have been jokes that it might be just me and the crickets at the signing but I’m not dismayed! I’m hoping to be armed with some sort of promotional giveaway and my winning smile so if you are reading this and live in the area please come and visit me! I’d love to meet you.

Lynn Johnston Contest and Interview
Tomorrow (Thursday, September 9th) at 10AM Bobby Chiu is interviewing the writer and illustrator of the For Better Or For Worse comics! Should be pretty incredible
. My Mom and I used to enjoy them every Sunday in the color comics section so I’m looking forward to the interview. As with every artist interview, you can create a piece of art based on a theme for a chance to win an original piece of art by the artist (usually based on the same theme). The topic for this interview is ‘The Family Dog’.
Walking the family dog on their first date.

I’ve been pretty busy lately but I still find that the time spent sketching with the Sketchoholics

Click on over and find out what’s up with Sketch Marathons, the Chiustream, artist interviews, the Intensity Club… it’s all free and you can win cool art! These drawings were all done in under an hour…
Undiscovered Sea Creature

Unusual Science Teacher

Creature with a pet… I have been so excited about drawing lately. I love my projects and am passionate about creating a good product but it has been a while since I’ve felt drawn to drawing. I’m so thankful to have found a sketch group full of creative people who are passionate about getting better. I’ve given up TV time to draw! What is the world coming too
?
Back to real work
!
Any artists out there who need a boost should check out Sketchoholic.com
. Bobby Chiu has really created a great resource that is just growing! His team at Imaginism Studios are also amazing. Fun!

I’m loving these hour long sketch breaks so much I’ve been trying to do one a day. It’s really been a great brain exercise and I can feel progress! I love it. Today I struggled with creating a unique interpretation of ‘Mustache’ so I decided to go with a familiar theme and just try to do it well. While I like how my Walrus turned out, a bunch of other people went the same direction! Oh well… better luck next time!

“Mustache”

“Flying Sea Creature”

Chris Sanders, creator of Lilo and Stitch, is being interviewed by Bobby Chui tomorrow and I can’t wait! He, like other interviewers, is offering up a piece of art to the winner of a big art contest on the site. I worked on two entries based on the theme ‘nightmares’… I couldn’t shake the whole idea of mares being involved so they appear in both pieces. I wrestled with both quite a bit but I really like how they turned out.
PS I’m sorry , Lucy, for making a teddy bear look so nasty in the second illustration. I promise “Pinky” would never look like that… ever!

Here’s a few more 1 hour sketches for sketchoholic.com

Strong, Big, and Graceful

Fat Little Princess

Electric Elf

I took an art break in the middle of doing more art… I love one toothed alligators
.

Sketchoholic contest entry. One hour and the topic was “One tooth”

I’ve mentioned it before but I get to make flannelgraphs that are used in Sunday School rooms. How cool is that? Who knew that I’d have a hand in creating the very items I grew up learning from. Here are a few that I liked from a recent assignment. I love the bright colors! And another secret…

These are all me!!

I have family members pose for some but in a crunch I’m usually my most cooperative model!

No, I haven’t been fishing in Alaska but after working on these drawings I think it sounds incredible! I was contacted through referral by John A., who needed some artwork for an instructional e-booklet on fishing the Kenai river for Red Salmon. It sounds different from any fishing a Michigander might be accustomed to! John has put his passion for Red Salmon fishing into an e-book in a effort to aid the ‘out of towners’ in their quest for Red Salmon. As soon as I have a link for purchasing I will put it up here but meanwhile, here are a few illustrations I made for him.

I have a lot of great things in a works and I can’t wait to get it up here. In the mean time, these are a few images from a book that I worked on last winter. It was a 4th grader reader filled with stories about kids from history. I don’t get to work from history very often and I think the challenge here was finding costume reference to fit the time period!
There are a few more images below the fold (click for more)
Thanks for stopping by!

The good news is that they are planning more so I get to have another crack at it! I can’t wait to get started!

Growing up my Dad used to enjoy the occasional monster movie. I recall seeing Godzilla fight Gammorah on more than one occasion. I think the thing that interested me most was that Godzilla had this strange relationship with the humans. He always helped them out! Crazy, water-sleeping, building smashing, man-in-a-monster-suit monster! Anyway, I’m sure there were a couple where the monster had a strange connection with a small boy so here we have Godzilla playing catch with a little boy.
I’m not so thrilled with the way the color turned out on this one. I may have to revisit this in the near future to see if I can improve the process a little. For now it’s time to move on!

Whoa! Another round of Sketchoholic
this afternoon. What a rush! A lot of great entries and I ended up coming in 2nd! Woo hew! One of these days I will claim the coveted Bobby Chui sketch

. These one hour sketch throw-downs are so intense and I actually learn alot about how to get ideas down quickly and how to make some quick decisions. If you like to draw and like the encouragement that comes from sketching with a group of people be sure to check it out!

This past winter was pretty busy! Attached below are several images from an upcoming book called Alfred the Clever Crow
by Peggy Carey. Alfred is a curious little crow whose curiosity gets him into trouble. Throughout the book he learns that his Mother is there to protect him and that he needs to listen to her rather than venturing off on his own

. I’ll post a link when it’s available!

Had a great time sketching today with The Intensity Club at Imaginism Studios. Voted top by the other artists so thanks! Looking forward to the next sketch.

This past winter I illustrated a book called Cop’s Night Before Christmas
, by Michael Harrison. It’s a great story about a policeman whose duties call him to serve on Christmas Eve, away from his family. I really enjoyed illustrating it and can’t wait to see the final product! I just found out the Michael Harrison will be featured in American Profile magazine in 2011!
American Profile
will run a feature on Michael Harrison, author of
Cop’s Night Before Christmas for Christmas Eve
2011. The story will mostly be about police officers working on Christmas Eve and Michael has worked more Christmas Eves than most police officers. The book will be mentioned in conjunction with the story.
American Profile
is a weekly, four-color magazine that circulates within community newspapers nationwide.
To get ready for its release this fall I’m posting a few of my favorite images… check back in September for a few more!

These guys
have been getting a lot of play lately… two whole illustrations and they are still walking along. The sketch for them is below.

Sketchoholic.com
, one of Bobby Chui’s web sites has had another contest. The theme of this one centered around sculpture and interpreting something classical. I went around and around with this one and finally settled on the
caryatids in Greece.

It seemed like a good idea… then I decided to make this my next promotional mailer (gotta make the art work for me
. So my thought was to make a postcard with a fun spot on the back to tie the whole thing together. So here we go
…

My wife’s a big fan of Audrey Hepburn (and who wouldn’t be) so, after a lot of noodling I thought maybe the caryatid had run off with some other piece of classic sculpture for a holiday

. I’m kinda diggin this one

. Thanks for stopping by!
Well, not quite
. This was a quick cartoon for one of my clients to advertise their services.

And now for something a little different! I was asked to do this retro-styled piece for one of my clients and thought it sounded like a good challenge! I’d love to dig into this technique a little more and see where it takes me. I’ve also been taking some figure drawing classes at the KIA and those have definitely been helping me identify problem areas in my art.

Till next time! Thanks for stopping by.
Hey Ya’ll (ala’ Paula Dean), today’s my birfday so I took the day off! Woo! Hoo! Had a little Lee’s chicken, downloaded some iPod apps, and did a drawing for sketchoholic.com
. Today Bobby Chui is interviewing Humberto Ramos and the winner of their little drawing contest gets a drawing from Humberto. I love original artwork so here’s hoping! And it’s my birthday so I have birthday luck on my side

.
While you are here check out the book page
I’ve added to the site! I’ve linked most of the books I’ve worked on and it’s neat to see everything in one place

.

I collaborated with a friend from across the ‘pond’ and this is what we came up with… I hope to have more to tell you some day in the near future.

Go get em, A!

How exciting that you are having a signing! If I lived closer I would definitely come. =)
I wish you could be there! I could use some familiar faces
.
Good luck David; sell a bunch, but most of all, have fun! Thanks again for everything.
