1. I'm pretty sure I can think of....

...eight hundred thousand miserable things I would rather be doing than raking, blowing, or walking on leaves!

But until that work is done, I can only look at projects that I've started and hope to finish.
After raking all the leaves maybe I'll drink enough beer to finish this
bottle border.

And just relax and enjoy the early bloomers, like this pretty blue Speedwell!

Here's hoping your garden chores don't include a never ending leaf pile!

2. Where to put it??

Yesterday was cold and snowy, but my good friend Katie, her sister-in-law and I ventured out to find something interesting to by in the gardening genre! It didn't take long before we stumbled upon a coffee shop that sold the most beautiful decorative and functional bird houses! And at such are reasonable price!
I just couldn't resist this sweet decorative birdhouse with it's high pitched roof!
The old timey nail is perfect!
And I think it goes well with this abode!
The hardest part is trying to figure out just where it's going to live!

3. My how time flies!

It has been a very long time since I've made a post and I have to say I've missed being here.
Between my computer going awry, a dirty camera, and a new job, I have been neglecting the fun of blogging!
I really hope to to a better job of keeping up with my friends far and wide!
We woke to our annual March snow this morning! I really hope this is March coming in like a Lion and that it wont be long before the Lamb arrives. I can't complain tho, it's been a wonderful winter.
My plans for this year include:
moving our greenhouse to a better spot
turning my old shed into something other than a flying squirrel hotel
(yes...they moved from the bluebird house to the shed where there is plenty more room to multiply!)
and riding the Harley just a little more often!
and sending the camera off to be cleaned by Canon.
Wish me luck...if anyone is still out there!

4. Ignorance is Bliss (Langston Gap Road)

Yesterday was such a beautiful day! Morgan was still at her girlfriend's house from a sleepover and my hubby suggested a nice morning ride. I"M IN!!
We looked at the map and we decided a short trip around the lake would be perfect and found this road. That looks like fun!
NOW....if I had decided to check out the same map, with the terrain setting highlighted, I may have had some reservations on this little jaunt. That's where the "ignorance is bliss" factors in.
It was a beautiful ride and a day not unlike the google map photos seen here. I think I even had a bug spot on my face shield like the google camera had. I started having a little bit of a warning as we were riding this road. The bottom left shows the little yellow man and the top photo shows the view. If you notice on the right of the photo where the clouds drop to a point at the bottom, right behind the tallest tree, I'm able to see the dim sight of a ridge in the distance. Note the hairpin turn on the lower map on the right.
Now, I'm starting to get a picture in my mind of just what I'm up against.
 YEP.....looking straight on.
And then, as we turn away, out of sight out of mind. Everything is right with the world.

5. Mr. Intrepid

Even when I'm sitting all alone on my mountain, I always feel like there is someone watching over me!

6. Staying Home

Since Rachel's visit, I've found that traveling is a little too expensive these days so when you live somewhere you love, why not just stay home!
Unlike my little baby Bluebirds that flew the coop shortly after this photo was taken! He's giving me the eye!!
This mom can stay close to home, so I guess I can too!
The Summer Tanagers have arrived and the woods are full of
Robin-like songs of tweetle-dees and tweetle-dums.
The papa Cardinal is ever chirping a warning call.
Last year I planted wildflower seeds over my septic tank since it's difficult to mow there. This year new flowers are coming up that weren't there last year! It's such a wonderful surprise!
I also planted this Rue and a Fennel for butterflies to munch or lay their eggs on, hopefully!

7. Where Have I Been? Helena, Alabama

Well, you know, every year Spring sets in, and in some places it comes a little earlier than others! This year we had a very early Spring and of course who can do anything but go adventuring at this time, be it on the road or in your own back yard! This Spring I finally went to visit Deb at Deb's Garden in Helena, Alabama. Rachel was here visiting from chilly NY and she, Morgan and I hit the road for a garden adventure, which was just splendid!!
One of my favorite things about Deb's Garden is the abundance of detail. Just enough of the little things that make you smile and want to sit a spell.
Each item has a story and that's really what having a home garden is all about, isn't it! All the hard work mixed in with the experiences along the way.

8. Something different!!

This is something I've been thinking of doing for some time now. Well, part of it.
Some of you might remember my rain chains from an old post back in 2008 seen here. I love these chains and brought them with us when we came south. However I have no gutters to use them with at this house. They sat in a box in the shed for nearly 3 years now and well...shame on me!
I've become a person who loves to find new uses for old things and although the chains aren't that old, they sure were calling out for a new use. (since I have no gutters!)
A few days ago, I decided to hang them under the eaves of my back porch. Then it wasn't very long before I thought that they might enjoy a little greenery within.
I had some struggling "hens and chicks" in one of my strawberry pots and the idea clicked. I placed a few small rocks in the "tulips" of the chains, added a little dirt and the plants!
They are protected by the eaves of the roof and in full sun.
We shall see how they do!! And I'll be sure to share with you whether or not this turned out to be a good idea!

9. Just Another Day in the Yard

The Bluebird nest has gone from a few sprigs of grass to a beautiful work of grassy art! Way to go! to my hard working mom and dad!
 Butterfly sightings are increasing.
Apple blossoms just all of a sudden appear!
The daffodils are still standing tall.
 Changes are beginning.

 The porch is being utilized.

And my Dogwood tree never ceases to amaze me!

10. Of Birds and Bottles

Well, lately, up here on the mountain, it seems to be all about birds.
Mostly Bluebirds. I found a couple tiny salt and pepper shakers that fit right into the theme.
See, there he is! Mr. BB checking out the new box!
And just in case I don't have enough Bluebirds or nest boxes, I thought I'd add another apartment for anyone who is interested.
And then there is the thing about Bottles!
My Step-mom, Bette, sent me the most wonderful early birthday present!! A BOTTLE TREE!! Oh I've been wanting one for a very long time! She was SO shocked that it didn't come with the bottles but I told her not to worry! Finding the bottles was half the fun!
Darn if I wasn't fresh out of bottles. EXCEPT for a bottle of a very old wine. It's a funny thing about that bottle. My best bud, Deb, from NY, gave me a bunch of old bottles of wine years ago. We didn't know if the wine was any good and it turned out that they were not. I dumped all the bottles and sent them to the recycle bin long ago...well, all but one bottle. Somehow it made it's way south, here to Alabama where bottles have a place. A very important place.
On a bottle tree. Now I have a piece of my good friend Debby right here on the mountain with me!
 THANK YOU BETTE!!!

Now just because the barrow is turned over does not mean I drank that bottle of wine!

11. Old Nests and New Butterflies

One of my earliest butterflies, the Falcate Orangetip showed up in the warmth of this late winter day. Turns out it was one of three butterflies I would see today.
I won't boast one these pictures, and what excuse did I have?...none, it sat quite still for me, but alas...no crisp shot was to be had.
I would love to remember the name of this sweet early shade bloomer that I bought last year, but again, I've forgotten!
One thing I am sure of, and that this is a bird nest!!!
 This is a Maple Tree!...
...and these are wild!
I can't have a post each new year without at least one photo of the crocus.
The rake is getting put to good use. OH the leaves...will they ever end!!!!???

12. Room for More

As of yet, our resident flying squirrel has not decided that finding a more "natural" home is in his best interest.
Of course, I have not yet persuaded him to get looking,
so....
...another home was added to the yard.

13. Scenes from the Yard

After a brief return to winter weather things are getting back to the mild, spring is in the air, atmosphere here on the mountain.
The local Nuthatches are enjoying the homemade suet that I've kept going in the feeder.
The price of Black Oil Sunflower seed has kept this fellow lonely this year.
This bunch is a lot cheaper to take care of over the winter months!
They are taking the place of the old birdbath. It finally let go so I'm thinking it'll make a great plant holder this year.
You really can't have too much moss....can you?
The Daffy's heads are hanging. That frost was just a bit much for the ones that were in bloom.
However, the rescued flowers are standing tall with the chickens in the kitchen window!
Nothing gets the Lenten Rose down! This bunch was layin

14. Thou Shall NOT Occupy!

It has just been the most mild of winters in Northern Alabama!
The kind of winter that feels right for the south. We had a little snow and cold early on, but hopefully winter will close with ease and we can move on to bigger and better things.
Ok, maybe I'm living in a dream world, but without dreams where would we be?
I'm looking forward to dividing Morgan's boots and finding new homes for the crowd growing there. Because as we all know it's not nice to Occupy too much space.
It's much nicer to have room to breath.
To guide with love and strength.
This ideal brings out the best in all of us.
For those who like to Occupy...
Thinking you can cause trouble and put others out, then sneak away unnoticed...

15. Ole, the Ever Watchful

Good Ole Ole. He always lets me know what's going on in the woods on the mountain. This morning was no different. I heard his "there's a critter" bark, turn into "DEER" bark and quickly got my bins and camera.
A buck was sneaking through the woods. I'm pretty sure he was saying to himself...
"Don't mind that fat dog"
"Just keep your head down, concentrate and keep walking"
"Keep your head down and hide behind the trees"
Well, it worked. Ole watched him depart the property and retired back to his post!

16. Looking Back

These forgotten photos were taken last May. What a beautiful month in Alabama!

It's still hard for me to get over how much earlier spring comes in the south!

As most birds here on the mountain, hiding in the trees from the photographer is their favorite past time. This little Palm Warbler is no exception.
And here I am training the birds to take seed from my hand.
I got really impatient...so it didn't really work out well. I had to fight the mice off at night. That was no fun!

17. Looking for a Post

Well, not this kind of post.
You know...a blog post. As I wandered about the yard looking for inspiration, I was a little disappointed. But there's always new growth to lift spirits.
 And sweet little Chickadees.
And there was even a early Crocus...
 ...and a bright Flowering Cabbage.
 Those darn early birds!
Finally I bumped into this face. He was looking for someone living under the tarp.

And he had a partner in crime!

19. Sunday Drive

It was an overcast day with a chance of rain, but with the mild temps and a finished yard project behind us, we decided to take a little Sunday drive round the mountain. We took a few roads that well, really lead nowhere, because if you keep going in a straight line, you'll drive off a cliff! So round and round we went until we found these beauties!
 Such lovely girls...
...and their very stern looking fellow.
We loved the house across the road from their pasture and can only imagine the view from the back!
The road finally led us down off our mountain, a road we've traveled before...just not this direction.
At the bottom turn, heading back up, were these three country bumpkins giving us the eye.
We took a little round about way home. One I've ridden the motorcycle on a few times. See that ridge? The road that leads us home is up there!

21. Babyface

The season is moving a little faster than I could have imagined!
Not 3 days ago my Japanese Maple was a dull maroon. Yesterday in the sun, I noticed it had changed to a spectacular red!

As we sat outside, enjoying the warmth and sunshine of a fine fall afternoon, I had a little visitor. Now I know some of you (Julie) aren't interested in my little fuzzy friends....
...but how can I not show this crazy little Babyface!
This little Jumping Spider is just one of the many that, as far as arachnids go, has stole my heart!

23. October is nearly gone!

It's been so long since I've been here, I've almost forgotten how to blog! I've been a little neglectful, so I'm really hoping you'll enjoy the photos from my yard.
We've been enjoying the colors, the cool temps and the changes in the air.
The pups are doing what they do best.
The butterflies are enjoying the flowers that have popped up in the yard. I've seen more Monarchs (shown above) as they head south, and the Gulf Fritillary has really become one of my favorites.

Daisy Lu wishes I would let her go off and play sometimes, but I won't so she sits and stares into the woods, dreaming of fat squirrels.
The Gaura has become one of my favorite flowers.

24. September Sights

September is a tough month. Only the most hardy of living things can take the heat and drought of this summer.
The Sedum did well.
If I could remember the name of this beautiful garden flower I would say...it's a good one to have!
I know someone out there will help me out with the name of this plant!
I've been very careful to keep my favorite ferns watered and happy.
And these wild Beautyberries have spread under the Black Gum tree!
What would September be without the crazy antics of the Hummingbirds...
...yelling at me to fill the feeders...
 ...and keeping a watchful eye!
