Do you intend to follow your passion in the new year? Elizabeth Gilbert gave a talk about curiosity at Oprah Winfrey’s “Super Soul Sessions” event.

3. Big Magic

Recently I read the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. She’s also the author of the mega-bestseller Eat, Pray, Love and the novel The Signature of All Things.

Big Magic is kind of like a manifesto for living and cultivating a creative life. Although it can apply to all sort of creative work, the author talks a lot about the writing life.

So I thought I would share some my favorite quotes/passages that you might also enjoy:

“Never delude yourself into believing that you require someone else’s blessing (or even their comprehension) in order to make your own creative work.”

“It’s a simple and generous rule of life that whatever you practice, you will improve at.”

“How you manage yourself between those bright moments, when things aren’t going so great, is a measure of how devoted you are to your vocation, and how equipped you are for the weird demands of creative living.”

“There’s no dishonor in having a job. What is dishonorable is scaring away your creativity by demanding that it pay for your entire existence.”

“Do what you love to do, and do it with both seriousness and lightness. At least then you will know that you have tried and that—whatever the outcome—you have traveled a noble path.”

“During my own periods of misery and instability, I’ve noticed that my creative spirit becomes cramped and suffocated. I’ve found that it’s nearly impossible for me to write when I am unhappy, and it is definitely impossible for me to write fiction when I am unhappy.”

“So how do you shake off failure and shame in order to keep living a creative life? First of all, forgive yourself. If you made something and it didn’t work out, let it go.”

“Art is a crushing chore and a wonderful privilege.”

“Love over suffering, always.”

8. Elizabeth Gilbert Writes an Essay on Seduction

Elizabeth Gilbert Photo (GalleyCat)Elizabeth Gilbert has written an essay for entitled “Confessions of a Seduction Addict.” With this autobiographical piece, published in the New York Times, Gilbert recounts her past obsession with the act of seduction.

Gilbert even shares details on how this unhealthy habit played a role in the dissolution of her first marriage. That divorce, while painful, eventually lead Gilbert to embark on a journey chronicled in her mega-hit memoir, Eat, Pray, Love. Here’s an excerpt from the essay:

“Seduction is the art of coercing somebody to desire you, of orchestrating somebody else’s longings to suit your own hungry agenda. Seduction was never a casual sport for me; it was more like a heist, adrenalizing and urgent. I would plan the heist for months, scouting out the target, looking for unguarded entries. Then I would break into his deepest vault, steal all his emotional currency and spend it on myself.”

9. Elizabeth Gilbert and Deepak Chopra Discuss Creativity

Liz & Deepak (GalleyCat)How do you define creativity? Writer Elizabeth Gilbert stumbled on a new answer to this question during a public conversation event with spirituality expert Deepak Chopra.

Chopra shared this observation: “All creativity is a break in logic.” Gilbert reported this discovery on her Facebook page and compared the act of succumbing to creative impulses to falling in love, forgiveness, faith, and “all the good stuff, in other words.” Do you agree?

Gilbert regularly engages with her fans in discussions about creativity through her social media pages. This study in creativity lead her to write a new book called Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear. Riverhead Books, a Penguin Random House imprint, has scheduled the release date for September 22nd.

11. Elizabeth Gilbert’s Novel Gets Optioned By MASTERPIECE on PBS

Signature of All ThingsMASTERPIECE on PBS has optioned Elizabeth Gilbert’s The Signature of All Things. Penguin Random House published this novel back in 2013.

Rebecca Eaton will serve as an executive producer for this project. Emily Ballou has been brought on as the screenwriter; she will adapt the book.

Here’s more from the press release: “Inspired by the true-life adventures of real 19th century female botanical explorers, Gilbert created an unforgettable character in Alma Whittaker — a brilliant, determined, and thoroughly scientific woman, struggling to express her intellectual curiosity in a society where women’s lives are confined to the domestic sphere. Equal parts Elizabeth Bennet and Charles Darwin, Alma spends her days seeking nothing less than the answers to the origins of life itself.” (via Elizabeth Gilbert’s Facebook Page)

12. Marking my boundaries (from Two Buttons)

At Two Buttons, the Frenchtown, NJ, store that Elizabeth Gilbert currently owns with her book-and-movie famous husband (the store is now up for sale), my husband was one determined shopper. The place is several thousand square feet and what feels like millions of on-sale items large, but he was looking for one thing.

Boundary Markers, he called them. I'm not leaving until we have one for you.

My husband had already arranged my exquisite birthday retreat. He'd already taken me to lunch at Lovin' Oven, where they put kale, apple juice, and lemon into a glass and you finally understand the word elixir. He'd already given me a respite from the enormous pressures of this spring and bought me two fine editions of high-gloss Doc Martens.

But a Boundary Marker was a gift absolute, he said. He found the cutest one.

So that's my new Boundary de-limiter, please don't keep treating me like a second class citizen buffer, please don't think I didn't notice what you just said (or didn't say) rebut-er, please be apprised that I'm fully aware that life is too short guy sitting there, right at the edge of my computer, where I need him most. Here is the official store description. I have a feeling that it was penned by Elizabeth Gilbert herself:

Boundaries and Boundary-Markers are very important in the Indonesian life and culture. Often used to literally mark land boundaries, these statues are also used to protect one's emotional boundaries as well. Carved out of lava rock from the island of Sulawasi, these wonderful individually unique statues help to support and protect your boundaries. Haven't we all had times when our boundaries needed a little help?
(Typing, I think again: Elizabeth Gilbert must be the voice behind the this merchandise.)

This is the year, my friend Kelly and I keep saying, that we turn it all around. This is the year. I'm starting by respecting myself a little bit more. And hoping that such a bold new stance will be noticed.

(and adopted by my many friends who are in need of their own boundary markers)

13. above all else, these things I seek

I went away to celebrate my birthday—up the Delaware River, on the New Jersey side, in the town made famous by Elizabeth Gilbert. I wore funky boots and worried about nothing and bought the coolest felt coat for close to nothing, gifts for a friend, a brass feather for my hair. Walking and walking beside my husband, who had surprised me with Frenchtown, who understood my deep need to be elsewhere.

These few things, while I was gone:

One Thing Stolen was named an April Editor's Pick by Amazon and a Top 14 YA April book by Bustle. I am grateful and humbled.

Galleys for Love: A Philadelphia Affair arrived. This book becoming a real thing, then. More gratitude.

The German edition of You Are My Only showed up in a white box. It is always deeply interesting to see a story remade in another language, announced to the world with a new image. I'm grateful for Hanser's faith in the novel.

I had many thoughts while I was away about what really matters, what makes me happiest. Family. Friendship. Time. Peace. These things I seek, above all else. You can make something special without spending lots of money. You can say love without wrapping it in a bow. You can look ahead and worry less. I keep getting better at that. Family. Friendship. Time. Peace.

Familyfriendshiptime.

Peace.

17. Elizabeth Gilbert Advises Against Depending On Your Writing to Make a Living

Elizabeth Gilbert (3)Author Elizabeth Gilbert sat for an interview with artist Luc Berthelette. During their conversation, Berthelette asked Gilbert (pictured, via) about her early beginnings, life lessons, happiness, writing memoirs, and creating fiction. He also requested that she share some tips for aspiring writers.

Gilbert answered by advising writers to not focus on their craft and to not depend on writing as their primary source of income. Do you agree with her opinion? Here’s an excerpt from her response:

“Of course this is the dream of dreams — to make a living by your art — but it is a rare thing, when that works out. Or sometimes it might work out for a few years, and then you run out of money. If financial success becomes the standard by which to determine if you are successful or not, you are likely setting yourself up to feel disappointed in yourself and your work. It’s not fair to your craft, to put this kind of pressure on it. Get a job on the side to pay the bills, and learn how to live an inexpensive, frugal life.”

23. Elizabeth Gilbert: ‘Ask yourself if this sentence, paragraph, or chapter truly furthers the narrative. If not, chuck it.’

Author Elizabeth Gilbert achieved great success with her memoir Eat Pray Love. Since the publication of that book, she has delivered two popular TED talks and written a second memoir entitled Committed and a novel called The Signature of All Things. Check out the highlights from our interview below…

Q: How did you land your first book deal?
A: I spent about six years sending my short stories out to magazines, and collecting rejections. Then one day Esquire bought one of my stories out of the slush pile and published it. It was through this publication that I found my agent (or, rather, that my agent found me). She then negotiated a book deal on my behalf.

I had a collection of short stories written and ready to go, but I had to promise the publisher that I would deliver a novel, in order to seal the deal. Having never before written a novel, this was rather frightening. But you have to deliver the goods, once you sign that contract, or else they get fussy and want their money back — which is a good motivation to get your work done…
