I love hearing about all your adventures in MI. Here's another little fact for ya . . . all of us who have lived in MI at one time, all use our right hand to point out where our city is located. Of course, that's a bigger challenge if you're talking about the upper penninsula (need the left hand for that one). :)

hee hee! i had always laughed at those commercials for snuggies, then my daughter got one for christmas last year. it's bright pink and i'm still laughing! this post was so funny, jannie!

Ha! so funny and so true. In Scotland, I could get through the winter with a wool coat too but in Montreal - never! My first winter here was a real shock and I went running to the puffy coat store....

Yes! People do steal the vegetables from the front yards in the midwest, or at least they did at my apartment. I finally have a small plot to grow on, and a kid stole my first big ripe heirloom tomato. He was seen by a neighbor eating like an apple. (I'm thinking next year I'll install a barbwire electric fence.)

I've been following your adventures closely - it's been awesome Jannie!
Today you reminded me of my favorite moment with a college friend who grew up in Queens. He said, 'So yo, what's a town like? Is it like a borough?'. That, and he couldn't get over how 'friendly' the squirrels in upstate NY were. Compared to the city squirrels that were always frontin'.

Thank you, everyone!! It means so much to me you've all been following every week! (I don't want to sound like a broken record but its true.)

Gina- LOL! Thats too funny! The squirrels here got real nuts to eat. The ones in Queens eat T-bones from the dumpster (seen by my very own eyes!) Oh how I miss Queens.

Love it! No one has ever stolen veggies from my front yard but I've had a garden angel decoration stolen and this year someone stole my "support your local library" sign. Oddly enough, I saw it three houses down on someone else's lawn... hmmmm

"Specialty" shops outside of large urban cities will be more expensive because there is no competition. Sucks when you are not used to it but at least you can get some favorites once in a while. Looking forward to seeing more sketches!

Oh no! Most major cities do have a Chinatown, Chicago where I live does. Detroit is kind of a weird city though so that doesn't surprise me. Best wishes on getting a car soon so you can get out to further places this winter!

Angela: I started to loosely sketch in pencil on these pages before I ink. Too many thoughts/directions so the penciling help me gather my thoughts. The pages before that, I just winged it!

Aw, I just love this, Jannie!I'm right there with you on the lack of social skills, but I have no excuse - been in this town almost 18 years. haha Having grown up in Michigan, and then moving to Texas I can tell you that if you think the folks in MI are friendly . . . whoa. Come down to Texas and you will be in complete culture shock!! Everything you described is just how I felt when I moved here. It was freaky. I think it has something to do with the sun. People up north are ugly when the clouds roll in and there is dirty snow on the ground for months on end.

Hi Janie... I love what you are doing with your sketchbook! Exposing a side of yourself can make you feel vulnerable but I think people enjoy seeing another side that is not all wrapped up in pretty paper. We always think everyone else has it all together... all the time and in reality, that's not the case. Thank you for sharing yourself.

I am doing the sketchbook too and I picked "the greatest story ever told" and would love to illustrate my sister's life but since the ending is sad, I am rethinking that. Now, since you wrote your post about your move... maybe I might take another look at my sister's story. Hmmm.
