So many people contribute to our writing path, many without even realizing what an impact their support, knowledge and kindness makes. As a feature here at The Bookshelf Muse, I will give some well-deserved recognition to those who really make the Writing Community a better place...people who truly are Writing Heroes.
Today I'm pleased to call
Gene Lempp a
Writing Hero. I met Gene through
Kristen Lamb's
#WANA hashtag on twitter and right away saw just how much he enjoyed connecting with and supporting other writers.
Gene works hard to give other writers exposure, both in his daily tweets to blogs and articles, and also through an absolutely fabulous weekly round up aptly named "
Writing Blog Treasures". I always find some really great stuff in his links and appreciate him putting it together. It saves me time--something that there's never of, it seems.
Gene is genuine and hard working. He's always ready with a word of support and has built a great community through his
blog. Gene is also a big supporter of
Author Kait Nolan's
A Round of Words in 80 Days, which is a group for writers who know that real life can get in the way of creating and so focuses on 'tailored' goals for the busy writer. (If this sounds like you,
check it out!).
He also runs a thought-provoking series on his blog called
Designing From Bones, which is a deep look at historical events, places and ideas, and how a writer's imagination can utilize (and twist!) the past to create some incredible fiction. He profiles some unique stuff (like
cannibalism) so I highly recommend checking this out. Also, don't forget to find him on
Twitter!
Thank you
GENE, for being one of m
y WRITING HEROES. You inspire me!
To pay it forward, I will give a 1000-word critique to Gene, who can choose to keep it for himself or offer it as a giveaway on his blog! As a resident Writing Hero, he will also have a permanent link in our header. If you are looking for great writing information and genuine contributors to our Writing Community,
please check out The Bookshelf Muse's full list of
WRITING HEROES!
So tell me Musers...do you know Gene Lempp? Has he supported you or helped your writing in some way? Please tell us in the comments and help celebrate this amazing WRITING HERO! ~~ * ~~
Also, You can find Becca over at The View Outside, talking about The Necessary Evils Of Writing with the smart and savvy Vikki Thompson! And there's an Emotion Thesaurus Giveaway, so please head on over and discover a great blog!
For a long time now, Becca and I have wanted a way to
acknowledge the people who have helped us develop into stronger writers and
who add to the writing community as a whole. As a feature here at The Bookshelf Muse, I will give some well-deserved shout outs to those who really make an impact...people who truly are
Writing Heroes. It is my pleasure to announce this month's hero:
KRISTEN LAMB.I realize that for most of you, Kristen needs no introduction. Her passion for helping writers is legendary, her ability to navigate the expansive landscape of Social Media is unparallelled, and her vision for a better world for all Creatives is truly one-of-a-kind. Refreshingly honest, Kristen doesn't shy away from being the voice we all need to hear--the one that encourages us to be the very best version of ourselves.
Kristen's books,
Are You There Blog? It's Me, Writer and
We Are Not Alone: The Writer's Guide to Social Media
have helped thousands upon thousands of writers! Her
blog is a treasure trove of wit and meaty wisdom about writing, social media and the publishing arena. She's also the creator of the #MyWANA hashtag on Twitter, which allows thousands of writers a way to engage, make friends and offer support in an otherwise vast and sometimes intimidating social network. This year, her central support concept of
We Are Not Alone transformed into
WANA International and its sister social site
WANA Tribe, which together have become a hub for all Creatives to learn, grow, collaborate and become empowered.

Francis the WANA Mascot |
One thing I love about Kristen is that she thinks BIG. Not big like
The World's Biggest Bacon Explosion, or
The World's Biggest Bacon Double Cheeseburger, although those are baconliciously awesome in their own right. No, Kristen studies the wide screen version of how people and technology meet, and instead of getting bogged down in doing what has always been done, she looks for the fork in the road that can take things to an alternative future--a better one. I've often called her a visionary, and I think this fits the bill. While others in Kristen's position might be content to simply focus on writers and how they can navigate the Indiana Jones' route to the holy publishing Grail, she also takes on the industry, supplying solutions to bring about big changes. I think that's pretty cool.
In truth, I could find another million reasons why
Kristen is a heroic advocate for writers, but I think you get the point. If you see her at a conference, introduce yourself! If you are hungry for insight and new ideas, swing past her
blog and check out her books. If you want to learn and grow and find a tribe, you'll discover that at
WANA International. But most of all, find her doing what she does best on social networks--
tweeting,
FBing and
Google plussing. You'll learn a lot, and have fun doing it.
Thank you
Kristen, for being one of m
y WRITING HEROES. You inspire me!
To pay it forward, I will give a 1000-word critique to Kristen. She can then choose to keep it for herself or offer it as a giveaway on her blog! As a resident writing hero, she will also have a permanent link in our header. So tell me Musers...do you know Kristen Lamb? Has she helped you or your writing in some way? ****PSST! Also, if you would like to find out more about how to show your character's HIDDEN EMOTION, come visit me at Strands of a Pattern!
Well after an insanely busy May which featured the release of The Emotion Thesaurus, an awesome Random Acts of Kindness Blitz for Writers, two kids birthday parties, one new house, and a class camping trip that the school forgot to tell me about...Becca and I are getting back into a routine again. And, along those lines, we're also returning to our Writing Heroes Series, where we acknowledge the people who have helped us develop into stronger writers and who add to the writing community as a whole. These heroes really make an impact, and deserve recognition for all they do.
So with that, I'd like to tell you about my
Writing Hero, JAMI GOLD. I met Jami through Twitter, where I quickly discovered that not only was she super friendly, she also had a treasure trove of writing information at her blog, Beach Reads With Bite. From there I found out that she had a zombie cat, and this reaffirmed what I suspected--she was one of the most awesome people ever. One thing I love about Jami is that she really pays attention to the mood in the writing community. She always posts timely articles on what's happening, how writers feel about it, and what her take is. Some people stay away from topics that are sensitive or might cause friction, but Jami knows that writers need to understand the climate we all work in in order to navigate the ups and downs. Whether on writing life or the how-to's of writing craft, her posts always offer sound ideas and advice. I had an opportunity to read some of Jami's work, and I really loved it. I won't post spoilers, but her premise took on high fantasy idea which she then re-genred (probably not a word, but it fits) as a contemporary romance. Brilliant!Anyone who knows Jami will not be surprised to see her featured here. She is always willing to help, advise, and offer encouraging words to those who need it. She works hard to forge friendships and stay connected to writers. Find her on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and more!Thank you
Jami, for being one of my
WRITING HEROES. You inspire me, woman!
To pay it forward, I will give a 1000-word critique to Jami. She can then choose to keep it for herself or offer it as a giveaway on her blog! Elizabeth is one Writing Hero who has accomplished so much, and given back so much, that I really will need to practice word economy in order to fit it all into a single post. I'll begin by stating the obvious:
Elizabeth is amazing. She's the author of not one, not two, but
three mystery series! Her specialty is
cozy mysteries flavored with good food and quirky, unique characters. Now you would
think this would keep her crazy busy, pounding out all these books and then marketing them, but no,
she does so much more! Most writers know that Twitter is an
excellent networking tool, allowing us to
stay up-to-date with the concerns of the industry and
gain information on timely writing topics. However, with the wide reach of twitter, none of us can possibly
keep up with all the great articles week-to-week. Round ups help of course, but once the week is over,
most links are lost...or they were
until Elizabeth came along. Along with the ever-brilliant computer wizard
Mike Fleming of
Hiveword, Elizabeth found a way to
collect this trove of links in a way that it can always be accessed.
The Writer's Knowledge Base was born:
a search engine just for writers! Every week, Elizabeth
scours the Internet for great blog posts on
writing, publishing and marketing and tweets them to the
#amwriting hashtag. Then Mike collects these bits of goodness to add to the WKB database. Like I said, A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!
I admit, at this point, I have to suspect that
Elizabeth may have a clone. Or six. And I can't even tell you that this is it, the end of the line. In addition to all this, Elizabeth runs a
fantastic blog,
Mystery Writing Is Murder, a great resource for writers, and offering her help and experience whenever it's needed. She's also created a
e-book database for people looking to take advantage of the growing demand of ebooks.
For a long time now, Becca and I have wanted a way to acknowledge the people who have helped us develop into stronger writers and added to the writing community as a whole. As a new feature here at The Bookshelf Muse, Becca and I will take turns giving well-deserved recognition to some of the people who really make an impact...people who truly are Writing Heroes.
I can't think of a better person to start off with than
Stina Lindenblatt! Stina is a rock star blogger, YA writer, photographer and friend all rolled into one. I met Stina first online, and then discovered with delight that she actually LIVED in the same city I did.
It was coolness on top of coolness. I quickly dragged her into a local Children's Writers group that would meet for lunch and swap books & writing news. In no time she became one of the most supportive writers I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, emailing me with links that she thought I'd like to look into, telling me about different people, courses and organizations that have helped her writing...and of course passing on the best YA books (NOTE: Stina's favs have
copious amounts of kissing and
romantic tension.)
One thing I love about Stina is that she's very passionate. You can see this in her writing (which is a pleasure to read) and from the way she isn't afraid to speak up for what she believes in. She won't shy away from discussing topics that affect writers, or take a stand on an issue. She's also incredibly
focused on learning and invests her time and energy into reading about writing, seeking help to get her writing to the next level and taking advantage of opportunities that will help her reach publication. She
knows a lot about the craft, belongs to both SCBWI & RWA and
shares what she knows without hesitation, which I really, really admire. :)
Her blog,
Seeing Creative, is an
excellent source of writing ideas and information, and she has a nose for digging up
great articles. I know there are a lot of 'Weekly Link Round Ups' out there, but Stina's
Cool Links Friday is NOT TO BE MISSED. I hope that if you don't already follow
Stina's blog you'll head on over and
see for yourself how awesome it is. She also blogs at
Query Tracker as well.
Thank you

How do I not know Gene? Unfortunately, wordpress only lets you follow by email, so I'll just have to follow him on Twitter!
Congrats to Gene! He sounds like an awesome resource for writers.
Awesome! I"ll go check him out! :) Love the thought of offering those twists on history!
This is the first time I've heard about this great guy. I shall now pop over to visit him. Thanks.
AWESOME! Congratulations, Gene!
I've only a few conversations with you, Gene, but by following your blog and seeing how active you are in the #MyWANA feed, I can definitely say that you are a true Writing Hero!
Congrats again! You deserve it, my writing friend! :)
Gene is one of my best friends online and I'm so happy you chose him as a writing hero! He's that and more to so many people. His blog is a mainstay on many readers lists, even those who have time to read just a few blogs a week. Every single week, readers learn something or get a few giggles from following Gene. And he is the most supportive and helpful friend. He appreciates everyone as much as we appreciate him.
He has some new twists coming on his Designing for Bones posts and we're all anxious for the big reveal! Do follow Gene...you won't be sorry.
Love, Gene. So happy to see him get this shout out. I always get something out of his posts. His ROW posts always keep me thinking and help me in my path. Thank you, Gene.
Nope, he's new for me. Thanks for passing him on.
What a wonderful series! You've made me think about who are writing heroes for me.
I just subscribed to his site based on your comments about him. Thanks for your ever helpful site.
Heather
Awesome! Gene is one of my favorite people. :) I love his link roundups and his Designing from Bones series is truly unique. Plus, he's just a great guy to know. :)
I've know Gene for a year now, because of ROW80! He's awesome! Go, Gene, go!
Gene is a great guy--he puts so much work into his posts and tries hard to connect with all the people who visit. I know many people who are so happy to have met him through ROW!
Cheers all around--thanks everyone for the shout outs, tweets and mentions about Gene today. :)
Off to meet Gene...
(I love that you have Heroes and cannibalism in the same post!)
I've seen a lot of strong content in Gene's Twitter feed, and he always has something supportive to say. Great choice, Ange :).
Wow! I am - stunned - awed - honored!
Thanks Angela and Becca I couldn't be more thrilled. I love being able to help connect people with good information, each other, and help out whenever I can. Of course, the writing is first (which is why I'm showing up here so late in the day), but I'm glad to be on the same path as such great people as yourselves *smile*
I think I'll pass the critique forward, along with a match from me. I'll announce details on my blog soon, probably Sunday.
Matthew: I have an RSS button on the side column *smile*
Melinda: Always great to see you. Thanks :)
Marcia: My friend - thanks very much for the kind words - all the best to you, always :)
S.J.: Thank you. Always glad to help out, even if it's just a bit of inspiration :)
Heather: Great to meet you. Thanks for the subscription :)
Jami: Ditto, my friend. And another of the Writing Heroes - Jami is one of my favorite stops of the week, be sure to check her site out if you haven't already.
Juliana: Always such a great cheerleader! Thanks :)
Jemi: You know I wrote those cannibalism posts with Angela in mind. In the health way. Of course. (grins) Thanks for stopping by my site :)
Angela and Becca: Thanks so much for all the kind words. And the gigantic smile. The Muse is one of the first sites I found when I came to the net and it has always, and will always, be one of my favorites. Not to mention that I think the world of the two special women that run the Muse. Peace, friends :)
Gene is awesome! I am always thrilled to read his Treasures posts and ecstatic when he comments on my blog. :)
Doesn't everyone know and love Gene? He has been an awesome Tweep to me from the start, and he even helped me understand Twitter via telephone when I was just starting out! Gene is a wonderful, generous man. I often wish my son had him for social studies since he really knows how to make history come alive.
Congratulations, Gene! You deserve this award!
You pegged him right. He is a hero and his Blog Treasures and Designing From Bones are two of my favorites. Gene was one of my first Twitter friends. Like you, I met him through the #MyWana hashtag. His quote on his Twitter profile impressed me so much:
"Only the moment seems eternal and in a moment everything will change." ~Gene Lempp
I think his quote is profound!
I've met Gene through WANA as well. He is a very kind and friendly person. I need to start visiting his blog more often, just like I've used to.
Couldn't go to a better candidate! Gene is a fabulous writer and supporter of writers. As a fellow ROWer, Gene's my idol for being a sponsor. I try to be the best sponsor I can and role model myself after Gene's kind words.
Directory of Heroes ... Alexander Pushkin was a Russian poet and writer who is beloved around the world. ... Ariel Durant was a writer, scholar and philosopher.
It's nice to 'meet' Gene. He sounds like a fantastic guy!
Gene, it was a pleasure to profile you. I know everyone likes having a chance to show appreciation for the people who make their lives more joyful, and I'm so glad that all the people who care about you found this post got to thank you and cheer you on. :)
Designing From Bones is one of my favorite blogs on the web.
May I link to your blog from my own?
Hi Theauthorrwforster, certainly! Feel free to link to us in your sidebar, with our thanks :)
Go Gene! As a long time fan of his, I'm so stoked about this post. Thank you for honoring him—very well deserved. His blog rocks and he's one of the most supportive tweeps in the online writing community.
I also know Gene through the WANA gang and am a bit of a lurker on the sidelines but always pay attention to what he has to say. He's a role model and motivator extraordinaire! His website is a treasure chest of writing gems and he SO deserves to be named a Writing Hero!
Thanks for the introduction!!
Congrats Gene! You're my writing hero too. You educate and entertain me every week. Even in your ROW Check-ins you think what your readers get from them and include short reviews.
What are writing heroes made of? Dedication and giving. And being 100% unique.
