I keep trying to convince myself that I enjoy Jodorowsky comics.
I try so hard.
I just can’t separate him from his films, and I love his films so much more.

I like The Incal and The Metabarons. Everything else I could take or leave tbh.

Erlangen, Germany. Running since 1984. They are very accommodating to English speakers (it’s a university town), and they have a good mix of programming.
26.-29. May. Arrive early in the week, and you can partake of the oldest beer festival in Germany, the Bergkirchweih. (The natural refrigeration of the local hills is perfect for storing beer!) 12.-23. May.

Couldn’t help but laugh at the Google translated publishing houses – like It & There (Ca et La), Even Here (Ici Meme), and Even no Evil (Meme pas Mal) :)

This is amazing.

Let’s see if this one sticks. I can’t even count the numbers of time every 2-3 years where we wondered if there would be anpther edition of the Angouleme festival as we know it. But yeah, pretty big names signed this.

I am thrilled about this news, but I’m actually here to make a general comment on the Beat website that I’ve been meaning to make for a long time, and that is that this gray font is murder on my eyes. It is incredibly hard to read. I read this site regularly, but it is literally (yes, literally) a pain to read. Please, please use a black font, or at least a much darker gray!

This clusterf*ck keeps getting better and better. Our beloved socialist government has been in damage control mode almost since day one and this is just a small part of it, it’s a lot more worrying on subjects that actually impact lots of people’s lives (like unemployment, war, justice, you get my drift).
Not that I want to belittle the predicament some of these artists are facing but they always seem to be like a bunch of whiners. Being an artist is not the same as working for the post office. There is not job security and that’s a given from the start. If you can’t make a living from your art, it’s not a job, it’s a hobby. Get a real job. Relying on part-time welfare benefits for artists is a disgrace and a burden for a society that doesn’t need it. Look at american actors, even the big ones waited tables for years before getting their big break. It’s called taking ownership of your own life instead of relying on the nanny state.

Sure, the host of this ceremony is a moron.
Sure, whoever higher-up who signed off on this should be fired, but that’s not going to happen in France. No one ever even gets a slap on the wrist for stuff like this.
We all know that french ministers are not hired based on their skills but only on political leverage, so what were we expecting, seriously?

I’ve lived near Angouleme most of my childhood and I know that the festival has always been dipped in corruption and shady proceedings from local and semi-national politics. Not going to change any time soon.
For these parasites, it’s business as usual, there is zero chance that real issues are ever addressed in this country, as long as inbreeding politics are the way of the land.

The false awards, as a joke, were not a bad idea in and of themselves; it was the execution that was deeply flawed. If the awards had been given for absurd, obviously made-up categories I’m sure that the audience would have immediately gotten and played along with the gag.

I think that you have to be very careful with humor, especially when it’s in a language that some of the nominees won’t understand.
Nominees may be bewildered to be there in the first place, watching for cues to know where to be when and trying not to trip. Making this in a French farce doesn’t make anyone any the happier.
Hopefully this year’s shambles will be a sign for the organisation to clean up their act or for more people to nope out next year. Preferably the former.

French people always expect people to understand their langage, whereas Frenchs suck at speaking foreign langages (I am so ashamed when I hear our top french leaders speaking english so bad).
That’s probably the same thing with humor. But come on, english are kings of humor, not us, that’s another domain we suck at. but please keep buying our awfull french movie comedies ! :p

I’ve been following this year’s controversies at Angoulême, but had no idea that Bondoux had become a de facto dictator. Why does anyone take this festival seriously anymore?

Matt, I’ve since heard that there is talk of not extending 9eArt + ‘s contract which this debacle would almost ensure if anyone sane is running this thing.

What was the European award show sometime around 2002-2003 where porn stars were dressed in burqas, there was a bin Laden impersonator, and they crashed a model airplane into a podium that looked like the twin towers?
I remember Peter Bagge won an award and his acceptance speech was “uh….thanks?”.

The thing about the actual fauves, which makes this extra cruel, is that they are the ONE comics award perhaps outside of Japan that are reported on by the general press in France and more importantly, actually able to move books in great numbers post-win–perhaps by several 1000. Appearing at the festival and accepting your award, also helps sales. The idea that artists were accepting awards on stage not knowing they were “faux” is disgusting. Their response is negligent. When you have to explain the joke…

Angoulème is turning into a train wreck. Even a kid wouldn’t dream of doing something this awful.
BTW “Médailles en chocolat” means false awards, they’re not really chocolate medals, it’s one of those idiomatic expressions that Google still have a hard time translating. .

Just an important correction that you have to make, since a lot of people are talking about this thing without having seen it : nobody who’s been on the stage received a “faux fauve”, the faux fauve were only in the words of the host. Yes it was beyond silly and rude, and some people in the audience believed it, but still, it was not as humiliating as the story you are telling. The false winners were not called on stage, it was just the host reading a long list of false winners and try making the worst joke possible.

Wait! Was I supposed to get a fake chocolate statue? Where is it?! Now I feel even worse!

I urge anyone who understand french to read the transcript (follow the link “half-hearted apology”.

The transcript is unambiguous. The awards were never given to people, or even to books, they were given to CATS (loose translation of “fauve”).
For example, Saga did not receive the award, but Lying Cat did.
Basically the speaker looked into the books to find “fauves” and gave the award to the book with the best cat.

I don’t understand how this could be misunderstood this badly by people in the audience. The speaker should have been really bad at his job. This should have been a light-heartened five minute joke, possibly he presented it too seriously?

Reading the transcript again, the joke is missing an 10 second introduction that possibly would have made all the difference. If the transcript is accurate and the speaker directly started by giving the first award without any sort of introduction, I can understand the confusion.

It’s a catastrophe. French comix folk here are in a rage. It’s bummed out the whole festival, which was reeling anyways. Unbelievable.

This really seemed to backfire on the fans. They had a campaign to nominate a creator without even thinking about whether said creator would want the award. Wendling is a fantastic artist, but she hasn’t done comics in ages. She’s moved on. I’m not surprised she doesn’t want it.

When you compare the work of the 3 finalists, she doesn’t stack up in terms of bodies of work. This list (http://www.bdgest.com/news-1055-BD-Hermann-Moore-Wendling-Les-3-finalistes.html) is missing a few of her books, but the odds were definitely stacked against her. It was almost like she was going to be set up to fail.

I love Alfredo Alcala’s work – He couldn’t draw a truly bad panel if his life depended on it.
Some of his inks are the best Conan artwork I’ve ever seen (up there with Frazetta). Loads of detail and ‘rendering’ but without getting unclear – something that a lot of artists can and should learn from.

And yes, you’re not lying – the book is indeed affordable! Congratulations with the relaunch – I hope it does well!

I was curious how much less dumb the international movie was and started trying to figure out what was different…but it turns out the Weinstein cut was overruled, and the cut we all saw in the US was the same as the international version. Everyone saw the same dumb movie.

If Titeuf is mostly read by kids and not that popular among french hard-fans of comics, it is very nice to see him used to try to change the awful and frightening growing cloud of hate, bigotry and racism that has been plaging our country in the last bunch of years.
