Want to know what makes a picture book manuscript turn into a real book? Well editor Cheryl Klein, from Arthur A. Levine Books, has a very enlightening article posted on her website about what makes a great picture book. I know I took some notes!

2. Whatever

I illustrated a book earlier this year, and the saucy wench above is a teensy bit of one of the spreads. It was a fun book to illustrate because the mom kept trying on different outfits, so I got to go crazy on the clothes. Every outfit she tried on prompted her son to imagine himself as some exciting daredevil (pirate, race car driver, cowboy, etc.), so those pages were just as much fun to paint.

3. whatever

I'm beginning a new project with Scholastic, so this week I'm spending some time doing warm up sketches. This helps me loosen up, helps me find my new characters, helps me get to know them a bit. All good!

5. Whatever

This week we are posting "whatever we feel like".
So I thought I'd go ahead and post the final art for the "home" sketch I shared last week.
This is going along with a dummy book I'm currently working on. Wish me luck!

6. Weekly Theme: "Whatever"

This was a colored pencil sketch that never made it to final, but I thought it was appropriate for sharing today. I'm so glad Fall is here!
