Hi Marley, Win a free copy of a Ghost Huntress book, eh? I'm up for giving that a shot. Well, I won't be able to dress up this year, but I do love dressing up and I love good ghost stories. Two of my best costumes were actually SCA inspired. My husband and I attended a party where we dressed as a lord and lady. Our persona periods were no where near matched, his was 6th century Moorish and mine was 10th century Germanic (or as close as I could get it). He looked dashing in his tan colored sleeveless gambeson -quilted with carpet padding and electrostatic mat filler, long flowing abaya (robe) of cream and brown twine trim, dark pantaloons, black combat boots, lion-head medallion, and sheik-style white cotton headdress with facial veil (male Bedouin did the veil for a while). My costume was lovely in flowing azure velvet(long sleeves, long in the waist, and a 4-ft train), adorned with a floor length wrap-around chain mail belt, faux-fur collar of rich sable, "Juliet" style chain and Austrian crystals headdress and white lace ankle boots and gloves. Yeah there's a lot of "modern" pieces listed, but as the saying goes: "If they'da had it, they'da used it." The garb mavens adored his and tsk-tksed mine. Go fig.

Though I already own a copy of The Guidance, I'll still comment. I know that I am going trick-or-treating still this year with a couple friends... I just don't know what I'll be going as. Yet. One of my most creative costumes has to be when I was a die. A die as in the die that you roll in a game. (Plural- dice) When I was in Girl Scouts, we walked in this Christmas parade for another town. My troop all had to dress up as presents. So we took some big boxes and put wrapping paper all over it. (If I remember correctly, I think we put the little bow things on top of our heads.) This box was just sitting in my garage, and I needed a costume. So we ripped off the paper and painted it all white. I traced large circles on each side (to fit the amount of an actual die) and painted them black. I got a little plastic top hat and trick-or-treated. The costume was both creative and inexpensive, so all was a success! :)
I really am feeling that October feel and I am truly excited for Halloween this year. I don't know exactly why, but I have this excitement boiling up inside of me.

This year I'm going as Elphaba from Wicked. My friend is going as Glinda and my other friend is going as Nessarose from Wicked. Our other friends are going as a Munchkin and another one of my friends is going as a flying monkey. last year I went as Pippi Longstocking. That was very fun. I loved my clothes- hanger braids.

With my husband being a Nuke in the Navy working in the ReActor department on the ship. I thought it would be funny going as a Nukes Wife. I had on glow in the dark hair spray with make up and even sprayed my clothes to glow, all you saw in black was the words, Nukes Wife on my front shirt. Got many laughs on base that year taking my kids trick or treating.

I'll be going as a Baltimore Hon! Always an easy, fun costume!

OMG!!!! I just finished THE COUNSELING--My first Ghost Huntress book, I know that was a little backwards of me but SO GOOD!!!! I would LOVE to win a copy of The Guidance.

I have no idea what I'm doing for Halloween, yet, but a few years ago I did this awesome Victor/Victoria inspired cross-dressing outfit--kind of a bad cross-dresser--I wore a huge wig, loud make-up, fake eye-lashes that were winking at people whether I meant them to or not. I found a silk scarf and this loud colored blouse shoulder pads and all kinds of polka-dots, and I wore a padded bra with extra padding. I wore my highest heels and went around flirting and winking at my friends and co-workers all day, everyone thought it was hilarious!!! :)

My best one was when I was 15 and went t&ting with my best friends. OK, our parents said we were too old, but we managed to convince them this was our "last year". We decided to make it a big one. I purloined one of my mother's (very) old evening gowns, blue taffata, cut low in the front, but only 3/4 length, sewed a few bright orange ostrich feathers to a velvet cap and went as a can-can girl. Even learned how to do the dance. At every house my friends sang the classic can-can song and I went into action. Needless to say, our "haul" was the best ever and we all had a great time. What a way to go out!

I am dressing up as a girl version of the mad hatter. I absolutely love Alice in Wonderland! This book looks awesome, thanks for the giveaway!

I went as Zorro one year (and I'm a girl!) It was really great fun to have a sword and everything. I love Halloween.

I don't think I've ever trusted anyone enough to keep a really big secret. I've kept quite a few over the years though. High school was one big dramafest!

Yeah, I have experience with this secret thing, too. To this day, I am keeping the secret of a friend who later turned on me. In fact, no one would even care about it anymore, but it's still staying with me because the right to do!

Over the years,I have realized that keeping secrets 'safe' with anyone can go against me in the poignant of times,no matter how trustworthy I might think the person is. So now,I barely have any secrets...I am more of an 'open book'. It's better that way I guess. I trust no one except my family and me with my secrets. Well..I seem to have presented a very bleak view of human trust but I think it really is a very fragile thing.
Also,once I trust someone with a secret,I am in constant fear that the person might 'back stab' me...so as you say "Ask me no secret,I'll tell you no lie.."
However,I happen to go totally tight lipped when I am trusted with anyone's secrets :)

I have never given anyone a really big secret. I have done little ones to people I trusted. And sadly sometimes I did get burned in the experience.

I used to have a close friend who would just tell any secret as soon as possible. He wasn't malicious, but he was like a secret sieve...sometimes he forgot it was a secret (half an hour after promising not to tell), sometimes he had a "reason" for telling...but he always told.

He's still sort of a friend of mine, but I haven't told him anything worthwhile in years....

I told my friends about my secret. Well, okay...when you tell a secret to people, it's not really that much of a secret anymore. But still... This secret started to spread, to other classes, to the whole batch. And I really had this feeling who betrayed me. And my suspicion was confirmed because of her past betrayals. But I never told her that I knew. From then on, I never trusted her again.

I kept secrets myself. I have this one close friend. We always shared secrets with each other. And none of these secrets escaped our lips. This is the kind of trust that I like.

I don't like secrets, telling them or keeping them. I'm pretty open as a rule, so I don't have a lot of secrets to share and I wouldn't put that burden on anyone else. I hate it when people say "but you can't tell anyone." Well, then don't tell me because I don't want to be the guardian of your secrets. Especially if it means lying to someone about what you tell me. I don't like lying for myself much less other people.

One night when I was in the fourth grade, I woke up to the sound of my parents arguing, unbeknownst to them I crept to a safe hearing spot and listened and what I heard changed my life forever.. they were getting a divorce! I'll never forget the way I felt after that, I had a heavy weight on my heart and I needed to tell someone. I ended up telling my best friend who by the way is still my best friend today and she held my hand and let me cry.. that day she told me a secret too, her parents were also getting a divorce. It felt good to be able to have someone to share the feeling of sadness, hurt and confusion.. not only did I trust her with a secret she kept for me, but she told me a secret she trusted me with, that I in turn kept for her. It brought us closer as friends.

I've kept a pretty big secret for a close friend for nearly ten years. It was hard to bear, so she had to tell someone (me). But I've kept the secret, because that's what you do for a friend, right? (Unless it was a really, bad secret where someone was going to hurt themselves or someone else, obviously!) Congrats on the release, Marley!

I don't really have any big secrets so there's really no one to tell :D But if I did I would trust it with my other half. He is like a vault.

When I was in the 9th grade, I trusted one f my best friends with a pretty big family secret, and then, sometime later, we had a fight and she went ahead spilling it around the whole school. It was horrible. I've never trusted anyone with a secret since then.

Is it crazy that "keeping secrets" makes me smile immediately? Because I think of Sabrina (the Teenaged Witch, yes, that one) & all the crazy excuses she has to come up with to cover for her secret.

I'm a pretty private person but I'm also pretty honest, so I don't have a lot of big secrets... but secrets does make me think of being in high school & making up silly code names to talk about my friend's crush whenever we wanted... those are good memory secrets. : )

I usually tend to keep my secrets to myself. The secrets I've told others about, however, have stayed safe with them (I hope!)

A necessary lie I have told... well I suppose as a parent I probably do it all the time to me children. They have more than enough time to learn the real truth of the world without me enlightening them. Perhaps there is a direct correlation from ignorance to innocence.

On a lighter note... does this color look good on me!?

Most overused 'necessary' lie for me:'It'll be okay'- even when I know that it won't. It's just, I don't know, if I'm not allowed necessary lies, I think hope should be made illegal or something.

A neccessary lie I have told.. hmm.. that's a hard one. This wasn't a good neccessary lie at all but one of my friends had been in a relationship for a very long time and she was truly, madly, deeply in love. One day out of the blue her boyfriend just breaks up with her. She was devastated. I knew I had a lot of work on my hands to try and mend her heart as much as a heart that just obliterated into a million pieces could be mended. I knew her boyfriend because we had a few mutual friends and of course because of my good friend. No sooner had I gotten home from tending to my friend that I had received an email from her ex-boyfriend (of not even 24 hours) telling me that he had had feelings for me for a long time and now that he was single he wanted to see where it could go between us.. I was floored.. let's just say I gave him a piece of my mind!!! When I saw my friend again the next day she asked me if I thought there was someone else that he had his eye on and I thought back to the email.. I knew I couldn't tell her so I lied and said of course not. It was an extremely neccessary lie, but it wasn't good.. she was just to emotionally spent for me to tell her the truth..

My most consistent necessary lie has been for my kids. Over the years, periodically one would have an ear infection or need stitches, and we'd head off to Urgent Care. I was always asked: "Did you call your doctor's office for clearance for this visit?" That call would amount to about a 45 minute please-hold-until-someone-can help-you. And often, time was of the essence. So I simply lied and said yes. And never once was there any follow-up or did I have a problem!

Hmm... I used to tell my cat that he was the cutest cat ever, even though I knew some folks thought he was a little bit ugly. And this wasn't really a lie, because he was awfully cute....and besides, I had to raise his self-esteem (because he'd been abandoned by his cat mom as a baby and had unresolved childhood trauma over that.)

Not sure that counts, though...as it's possible my cat didn't understand English. (But surely he understood my tone of voice, right?)

I am what's considered a "picky eater." For my entire life I've hear things like, "just try it."

I'm not trying to not like your food, but I know what I like, and I know what makes me gag. Literally gag. It's not pretty, and I can't control it.

So, in order to avoid throwing up people's food that they spent a lot of time and effort making, or insulting them, or make the meal unpleasant, I started telling people that:

I'm not that hungry after sitting in the car so long.

I had a late lunch.

I get heartburn very easily.

Well, if you want to leave someone's house you can say you're sick.

I love the lie list, marley! I use "I'm fine" way too much when I'm anything but fine!

I'm not sure of a specific 'necessay lie' I've told recently. I'm sure that, throughout the years of school, I've said that I just forgot my homework at home, rather than saying that I didn't do it at all in order to not miss recess. Missing recess, to me, wasn't a huge deal, but it was embarrassing in front of the whole class. I guess that's a necessary lie. It's not very important, but it was necessary... at the time at least. Lol.

i lied to my mother that my husband has tattoos. she thinks they're the mark of the beast. ha ha ha hope she doesn't read this blog.

Hmm...I am sure that there have been many "necessary lies" in my lifetime. One thing that I have been saying a lot lately is whenever my girls say, "I want that" about random things, I typically say, "I'll keep that in mind for your birthday/Christmas/nearest holiday." Even though it is true that they get some gifts, this has just turned into the catch all phrase for many of the random requests.

I think for me a necessary lie I've told probably relates to body image. If I know someone who has just a little more meat on her but is not obese or anything, if she asks me if she's fat, I'll tell her no. I don't think it's necessary for me to damage more of her self esteem anymore than necessary.

I probably tell some neccessary lies to my relatives when they give me gifts, such as "That vase is really nice." When I'm thinking 'Hellooo I'm 18 I don't want a f*** vase!' :P

Necessary lie...hmmm...well any time I have ever been given a gift I don't like I always lie and say that it is great. Someone is trying to be thoughtful and they don't deserve to have their feeling hurt over something like that.
