Another case of child abuse goes viral on social networking sites | Dhaka Tribune

Corporal punishment against two girls at an orphanage run by Social Welfare Directorate in Barisal has caused uproar among the public after its footage went viral on social networking sites.

Although the incident took place on July 4, the district administration became aware of it after the footage went viral.

The footage uploaded on Facebook shows Md Dulal, health assistant at the institution, is indiscriminately beating two girls as they try to flee from the shelter home.

Yesterday, Deputy Commissioner Dr Gazi Saifuzzaman went to the orphanage and asked officials concerned to take stern action against the people responsible for the abuse after a proper investigation. See more…

The Evolving Role of News on Twitter and Facebook | Pew Research Center

The share of Americans for whom Twitter and Facebook serve as a source of news is continuing to rise. This rise comes primarily from more current users encountering news there rather than large increases in the user base overall, according to findings from a new survey. The report also finds that users turn to each of these prominent social networks to fulfill different types of information needs.

The new study, conducted by Pew Research Center in association with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, finds that clear majorities of Twitter (63%) and Facebook users (63%) now say each platform serves as a source for news about events and issues outside the realm of friends and family. That share has increased substantially from 2013, when about half of users (52% of Twitter users, 47% of Facebook users) said they got news from the social platforms.

Although both social networks have the same portion of users getting news on these sites, there are significant differences in their potential news distribution strengths. The proportion of users who say they follow breaking news on Twitter, for example, is nearly twice as high as those who say they do so on Facebook (59% vs. 31%) – lending support, perhaps, to the view that Twitter’s great strength is providing as-it-happens coverage and commentary on live events. 3. Read a Book for Ten Minutes & Save Publishing

Author Sean Cummings has started a Facebook group with a practical way to save publishing. Cummings theorized that the industry could be salvaged if everyone made a habit of reading ten minutes before bedtime.

Here’s more information about the Facebook group: “If you’re reading this, we’re asking you to shut off the TV and computer, put away the Blackberry and iPhone, crawl into bed and spend ten minutes a night reading a book – just ten short minutes. Read what you like.”

What do you think? As of this writing, 62 Facebook users have hit the “like” button on the page. The author is also working on an official website.
