Back in 2012, after Hurricane Sandy, I had a week-long furlough caused by a lack of electricity at my office near Union Square. That’s when I created this crazy idea: Read comics over a period of 26.2 hours, or read 1,572 pages of comics while doing nothing else. With the latest blizzard approaching Mega-City One and residents […]

As I write this (on Monday night) most of the central plains and the midwest are prepping for a snowpocalypse blizzard. We've bought up enough groceries to last two weeks, the cars are gassed up, the iPads, iPhones, and laptops are charged. We're lucky because we have a heat-pumping gas fireplace, gas stovetop, and gas hot water heater. When If the power goes out, we'll be bored but not frozen. I'm even charging up my Nook for bonus reading.

I feel prepared. For those of you in the path of--as John Green calls it--the Ice Storm of Doom, are you ready? How did you prepare? For those of you who will

This is a seriously overdue blog, since I got back from Kindling Words almost two weeks ago. But the minute I got back I got the third pass proofs for LIFE, AFTER, with a deadline and then the political blog I wrote for shuttered so I moved to another one and then I was determined to tackle my taxes.
But...*takes deep breath* as always, taking those few days in Vermont with some of the brightest and thoughtful writers and illustrators and editors around left me inspired and re-kindled and invigorated for another year of writing and creating.
When you spend your days in a basement lair, your only contact with people through the virtual water coolers of Livejournal, Facebook and Twitter (and we spent a lot of time talking about how to manage the TIME SUCK and actually WRITE) it was so, so, so, unbelievably wonderful to be able to hug the actual people. And here's me with two of the Hot Men of Children and YA Lit: Mark Shulman and eluper Eric Luper.
They aren't just hot, they're two of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet.
It's funny, with all the hoo-ha going on between Amazon and MacMillan, I was hesitant to even use the word "Kindle" in terms of my positive experience at KWE - it's like it started to have connotations of the Dark Forces. But then I thought, "Hey, Kindling Words was a force for creative energy and inspiration before slashing the prices of e-books was a twinkle in Jeff Bezos'eye!" So there, Amazon. "I fart in your general direction."
One of the best things that came out of KW this year was a heartfelt and passionate discussion about multiculturalism and race in KidLit - an issue that was already being discussed in the Kidlitosphere in the wake of Bloomsbury's treatment of the LIAR cover.
All of us emerged from the experience determined to make a difference, and you can expect to hear more about that, hopefully sometime in the near future.
I've consciously tried to keep my politics out of this blog, but I was horrified beyond measure by Tom Tancredo's opening speech at the Tea Party convention in which he attacked "the cult of multiculturalism, aided by leftists, liberals all over who don't have the same idea about America as we do."
As Rosalia, one of the characters in my upcoming novel LIFE, AFTER says "What about ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free’? It Add a Comment

It's hard to think about blogging when you're in the middle of a historic snow event. Snowpocalypse! Or as some might say, Snowpocalypse II: Electric Boogaloo. We had two feet in Northern Virginia and spent a lot of the weekend digging out. Schools and the government are closed today, I'm betting on school closed tomorrow, and then another storm comes in on Tuesday afternoon! Craziness.
For those who scoff at our snow totals, you have to understand the DC Metro area is simply not equipped to handle this amount of snow. While we have no lack of clueless drivers to block the roads, what we don't have is a good number of snow plows. In fact, in Virginia the residential neighborhoods are contracted out to guys with trucks and a plow stuck on. Not a bad solution for our general six inch snowfalls, but useless against twenty-four inches of untouched snow as we noticed yesterday on our own street.
Also let me express the annoyance of our general area that the official snow totals for Washington DC are measured at Reagan National Airport. First of all, the airport is not in the District. It's in Arlington, across the Potomac. Second, being on the river reduces the snow that accumulates there, so we always get a lower number than practically anywhere else. This area is already often accused of overreacting, and could at least use better supporting statistics than the 17.8 inches recorded at National Airport.
Today we're hoping for some melting on the streets and our poor fir trees, which look rather bendy. Our white cat is avoiding us now, because she can't help going outside in case it got better out there which means that we can't help putting her in the snow because it's funny. (Oh c'mon, you'd do it too.)
I already have every issue of STARMAN and THE SHADE (both series) cued up and waiting. Should be an excellent cold weekend to stay indoors, even if we won’t be getting any snow in my corner of the U.S.
