It's done. So now I find a bunch of tiles I did not include. This a quandary. Do I type up an addendum? Do I just read off those titles? Should I gather those books and take them along? Sigh.
What I REALLY want to do is read Tom Angleberger's The Rat with the Human Face. Who wouldn't? Right?
Here are some new and/or still hot topics in young people's literature:
How kids with various learning differences think and experience the world.
Prime numbers - ok, I only read TWO books with prime numbers in them but I have rarely seen prime numbers given so much attention before.
Art thefts.
Ghost infestations. Ghosts are always popular, but infestations - good or bad - seem to be a theme these days.
The 1910s - especially in Russia and WWI
World War II evacuees
The Red Menace and Joe McCarthy.
The EVER popular finding a hidden treasure somewhere in order to save a house/town/family/school/forest! Man, I want a hidden treasure RIGHT NOW!
I have kept away books about kids being abducted or imprisoned but that also seems to be popular as a theme - especially in Young Adult. I'm retired. I can read what I want.
I have a book waiting. Gotta go.

There are some stories that transcend genre because they have mass appeal.
This week, we'll take a look at a few themes.
1. Home Sweet Home: We all want to belong somewhere and to someone. In addition to food, shelter, clothing, and safety, belonging is a core need. We have all been lost at some point, either on a highway or in a shopping mall. Many people have had to leave home to go to college, to work, or to war. We all miss home. Even if our home lives were crappy, we idealize what home should have been and we long for it. We long for it like we long for water when we are thirsty or food when we are hungry. Longing for home is the theme of the blockbusters E.T., The Wizard of Oz, and Homeward Bound among many others. It will resonate with readers across the globe.
2. The Orphan: Think of Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling, The Lightening Thief by Riordan, the musical Annie, or any other orphan tale. Abandonment by death or intent is a deep wound that people have a hard time overcoming. Even when they think they have overcome it, a story can come along and rip the scab off the wound. We relate to a character that is suffering the slings and arrows of the orphaned or abandoned child. We like watching them rise up the ranks in life. We like watching them fight to prove themselves worthy. We want to see them end up on top, connected, and loved. We want them to find a home: the place where they truly belong. Many people grow up feeling like they don't belong: to their families, their school, or their town. If they find out they were really a changeling left on the doorstep, they are given the chance to find the place and people they should have been with all along.
3. The Wizard: A good book often explores wish fulfillment fantasies. We all feel inadequate at some point. We have all felt bullied or helpless. I doubt there is a child out there that did not, at one point or another, wish she had super powers so she could fight back. They pretended in the privacy of their rooms to be witches or warlocks or superman. Those children grow up to read books and watch movies. This theme is another reason why Harry Potter went orbital. It had orphans, revenge, and supernatural powers. It is the allure of the all Marvel comics and the movies made from them. We want someone superhuman or magically enhanced to do what we often cannot. We want to imagine ourselves waving the magic wand to change things we cannot change. We've gone from Merlin of King Arthur lore to the plethora of supernatural tales jamming the bookstore shelves in the YA, Mystery, Romance, and Horror aisles. Some are better than others.
4. Sweet Revenge: We've all been angry at some point and wished we could wreak revenge. We wished we were bigger, stronger, smarter, or had more money or power. We vent about what we'd like to do to the motorist that cuts us off, the boss who embarrassed us, or the crook that stole our wallet. Most of us are rational enough to not run around shooting people. Joking or ranting about our revenge fantasies takes the heat out of the situation. Whenever a core value or currency is transgressed, it triggers this response. We love seeing the victim of the tale take revenge on our behalf. We want the good guys to win, for might to make it right. This is the appeal of all the blockbuster action movies. It is the appeal of Braveheart, Oceans Eleven, and Mean Girls.
Tune in next week for more universal themes.

JacketFlap tags: Themes, Customization, post formats, Customizing, custom menu, featured images, Early Theme Adopters, isola, Add a tag
Whether you’re a personal blogger, a designer, or an artist, Isola gives you a bright, clean space to showcase your work. Its minimalist design stays crisp across devices and screens of all sizes, with generous white space to keep the focus on your content.
Isola, a free theme, comes with numerous customization options, from featured images and custom header images to sleek post formats. Let’s take a look at three sites that are already using it to great effect.
Design_That’s_It
Leon Scott, who writes thoughtful posts on design and technology on his aptly-named blog, makes the most of Isola‘s out-of-the-box look. He kept the layout simple and clean; all the widgets are tucked into a panel off screen.
Many of Leon’s posts — like the one shown above — include featured images, which establish their tone and also add a welcome burst of color.
Beyond the Black Mountain
The environmentally-conscious blogger who writes at Beyond the Black Mountain focuses on the intersection between fashion and eco-friendly living. Her site’s vibe echoes her approach elsewhere, with a stylish, spare look. A moody custom header image coupled with a retro serif font (Ambroise, which is available with the Custom Design upgrade) personalize Isola even further.
a dimpleate blog
The blogger behind a dimpleate, based in Northern Virginia, has created a photo-heavy lifestyle blog that still maintains an airy, clean feel. She uses Isola‘s image and gallery post formats to highlight the beautiful images, linking them to her Flickr galleries for visitors who wish to explore more of her work.
Have you also customized Isola? Is there another theme you’d like to see featured here? Let us know in the comments.

Kelly, which was designed by Automattic’s own Kelly Hoffman, is an inviting, fun theme for bloggers of all stripes. Its clean, one-column layout makes it perfect for text-heavy posts, but can be just as ideal for a tumblelog-like stream of images.
With bold featured images, the ability to customize the header and the background, and three widget areas in the site’s footer, you can make it your own with just a few quick tweaks. Here are some examples of the theme’s versatility.
Curated Style
Curated Style, a Toronto-centered fashion blog, makes great use of Kelly‘s out-of-the-box look. The theme’s cursive font in the header injects a stylish playfulness, while the generous white space in the posts makes the images of Toronto’s fashion scene stand out.
The blogger behind Curated Style effortlessly added a few personal touches, like a patterned custom header image, a splash of bright pink in the custom background, and an easy-to-navigate custom menu.
The Lens Less Traveled
Created by a photoblogger based in the Southeast (of the US), The Lens Less Traveled shows how radically different Kelly can look with just a few small changes.
The site uses a more neutral palette than the theme’s trademark bright greens and pinks, as well as a serif custom font instead of the default cursive. The focus is squarely on the gorgeous photography, like the picture above, taken in a state park in Georgia. The splashy featured image in each post creates a particularly striking effect, drawing viewers in and enticing them to explore more.
Lorenzo Setale
Taking Kelly in a very different direction than its default design, Italian software developer and entrepreneur Lorenzo Setale recognized the theme’s inherent strengths, and used them to create a tailor-made look for his site.
The dark background and sans serif font join forces to become a modern, clean canvas for Lorenzo’s thoughts, while the theme’s original focus on readability and balance stay as effective as ever.
Have you customized Kelly as well? Is there another theme you’d like to see featured in this series? We’d love to hear your input!

Launched last month, Pictorico is a free theme that combines a dynamic portfolio-style home page with a simple, single-column layout for posts and pages. It’s great for pro photographers, casual photobloggers, and anyone who wants a sleek space for personal blogging.
Let’s take a look at a few sites using Pictorico:
A Feast for the Eyes
British blogger Issy shares recipes at A Feast for the Eyes, a name that perfectly captures the focus of the site: food and photography. Pictorico‘s front-page grid displays her mix of dishes beautifully — her images are crisp and bold, while her plate setups are stylish and carefully considered.
Issy sets featured images on individual posts, adding color and sophistication to the header area. She also takes advantage of the theme’s clean, single-column layout, letting her images shine on the page:
Ubuntu
The traveler and outdoor enthusiast at Ubuntu sets a wide custom header image, which changes the homepage look of Pictorico. The panorama of snowy, jagged peaks is the first thing you see, and captures the blogger’s wandering, adventurous spirit. Pictorico‘s custom header area accommodates images of at least 1180 pixels wide, so the visual effect is dramatic.
Shine Studios
New Zealand-based photographer Blair Quax of Shine Studios uses Pictorico to publish his wedding photography, much of which captures the beauty of Waiheke Island. The front-page portfolio design of Pictorico allows Blair to showcase distinct wedding day collections at a glance. Single post layouts are elegant and uncluttered, so the focus is entirely on the couples celebrating their special days.
Blair activates the theme’s post slider as well, which adds another layer to the front page:
More Pictorico examples
- Photographer and cyclist Cherie Vale creates tiled galleries, as shown in this post from the UCI MTB World Cup, and illustrates another way to display images in posts and pages.
- Artist Rosalys also displays a wide custom header, showcasing an anime-inspired illustration.
Visit the Pictorico page for details, other examples, and to preview or activate the theme.

We have a new free theme to announce today: Bosco!
Bosco
Amid a sea of sliders, sidebars, and huge header images, Bosco stands alone in its refined focus on content.
Your story is presented in a centered, single column, with sophisticated typography and an adaptive layout that looks beautiful on any device, mobile or desktop. There’s still plenty of room for widgets in multiple sections above the footer, while Custom Menus, Custom Background support, and unique Post Format treatments prove that Bosco is anything but lacking in features.
Give your readers the distraction-free experience they deserve with Bosco. You can see it in action on the demo site, or activate it on your own blog at Appearance → Themes.

It’s Theme Thursday! Today, we have two new themes by two new WordPress.com theme shops: Mayer by Pressware, and Axon by DesignOrbital.
Designed by Tom McFarlin, Mayer is a straight-forward, solid blogging theme, built to get out of the way and get you writing. Mayer‘s authoritative typography and clean layout will give your words staying power, while its responsive layouts ensure your message gets across whatever your reader’s device.
Like all professionals, writers and bloggers need the right tool – and that’s Mayer.
Axon is a bright canvas highlighted with pops of color. Sidebars can be set to the left, right, or removed entirely, and Post Formats are given the attention they deserve, indicated by bold, sharp icons on every post. The navigation is never far away, as the dynamic menu holds to the top of the screen while scrolling.
Perfect for photography, travel, or any sort of portfolio site, Axon will frame your message in the best light.
Mayer and Axon are both premium upgrades. Check out each theme’s showcase by clicking on their screenshot above, or preview them on your blog from Appearance → Themes.

Cols is hard to read and doesen’t support Gallery post format
All new themes are with important missing functions. Probably to sell premium themes. Instead of 300 buggy free themes made 1-2 but perfect with all functions – all post formats, flexible header, colors and so on…

Cols is the ideal theme for longform posts. Since I write both short and long texts, but mainly short ones (that look unsightly in a multi-column layout), it would be nice to have two types of standard formats: single-column and multi-column. However, a great theme!

Cols works extremely well with longterm articles but can get a bit messy when it comes to multiple gallery posts. Nice work!
