1. Illustration Friday: Seeds

With this week's topic, I had a childhood memory of how I used to always wonder where the seeds from a flower would plant themselves when you blew them into the wind. (I know...totally corny!) I am sure my neighbors could have done without me blowing weeds into their yard.

Here is a quick experimentation with Painter's digital watercolor brushes and Hard Pastel on Rice paper. I have not used Painter's watercolors in awhile and I had forgotten how wonderful the brushes are for showing fluid movement. (the seeds blowing out of the dandelion are the "Spatter Water" brush.) When I worked traditonally, I could never control my spatters and would always end up with a muddy mess.

If people like this experimentation then maybe I will do a tutorial next on painter's watercolor and pastels tools. Let me know if you are interested...

2. Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

Coordinates: 39 51 N 75 43 W

Population: (5,273 2000 est.)

There may be only one “City of Light,” or the wettest place on Earth (that’s Tutunendo, Columbia if you’re wondering), but geographical claims to fame are numerous and well distributed. Occasionally, they’re also disputed. The Mushroom Capital of the World is a prime example. Now you might not think that such a title would be contested, but in fact, both Richmond, Missouri, and Kennett Square, Pennsylvania have crowned themselves king of edible fungi. (more…)

3. Iris, Messenger by Sarah Deming

Iris Greenwold receives a mysterious present on her birthday, a copy of Bulfinch’s mythology.  She discovers that the greek gods no longer live on Olympus, but rather in her hometown.  Soon she is sharing oysters with Poseidon, jamming with Apollo, and meeting Zeus.  But what does it all mean?  Is she here to help them or are they here to help her?  That is never really clear in the book and I can’t tell if there are going to be more in the series or if this is a standalone.  While it is a cute premise I was a little disappointed that there was not a clearer resolution.
