Hey, guys, it's Carl. We had the second meeting of our Percy Jackson Summer Bookclub last Saturday. It was a smaller group than in June (not at all unusual, since people take vacations before school starts) so we had only three guys. But, since we had a smaller group, I decided to try something different; we held an audio book club. I got the laptop from our technowizards and recorded the guys as we talked about the 3rd and 4th PJ books. Boy, did we have fun! You can hear the results.
(BTW, that's Alex in the Camp Half-Blood shirt, Mikey behind him, and Orsilio on the other side)
There's a picture here of waves crashing against rocks. It's a still picture. It doesn't move throughout the entire audiocast. Why's that? I can't load an audio onto this blog as I could a video. So I had to make the blog think there's a video in that space in order to get the audio in. So listen up and you'll the guys and me have fun talking about Percy Jackson. And if I had to put a picture in, why not have one to remind us of Percy's home element?
After we were finished with that, we had some fun. Well, at least what Ares would consider fun. Since we had 3 mighty heroes in the room, we set up an Ares Battle Station. (the bottom reads, "Can you handle it, punk?") Since real bronze would be too dangerous in the hands of such skilled warriors, we gave them much safer weapons----
-----letover rolls of Chritmas wrapping paper!! Here you see the Amazing Alex and the Magnificent Mikey squaring off. The Awesome Orsilio did battle also, so all three got to test each other's mettle. The three heroes were so evenly mathced that they fought to a draw. Beware, then, all monsters!! You don't stand a chance with three such champions in the land!
And to prove that the Riordans are nice people, here's a picture of our own coworker Leah happily showing off her new Camp Half-Blood T-shirt. Mr. and Mrs. Riordan sent it to us (allong with some extras) simply because Leah has become a big fan. The Riordans have been so good to us that we want to send a great big THANK YOU!!!
We appreciate it,
Carl

It's great that you guys have had the second meeting of the Percy Jackson club! It's even coooler that you decided to record it and put it onto your blog. I hope your club continues to go well!
Greetings, fellow readers. We have a new comment form our friend Hacksaw Jim Duggan from the Guys Read blog. It's about the Percy Jackson Book Club:
Hey Guys,
That club sounds really cool! I'm a huge Percy Jackson fan, and I would so be in that club! I havent had a chance to read the latest book yet, though, because I'm re-reading the series b4 I read the Battle of the Labrynth. It's sitting on my shelf, taunting me, so I'm reading the books as fast as I can! Hope the club continues to go well!
Hacksaw Jim Duggan from Guys Read
Thanks, Jim! You'll really like the fourth book. BTW, have you all seen the What's More Macho post on their blog? It's a good one. Write in and them what you think would be the most macho thing.
Well, I'm starting to recover enough so that I can talk about books. I can't do any new ones yet, so I'll tell you about a some of my favorites for a while. Here's one of my very favorite single books ever, The Yearlingby Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. This is a book any guy would love because it has all the action and adventure that you could want but it also deals with things we all deal with-- friendship, family, and what to do (or not do) when life isn't fair. The story takes place in Florida right after the Civil War. This isn't the Florida you'd think of today--it was a real wilderness, full of scrub pines, palmetto trees , and swamps. Life was a constant struggle for survival. In this backwoods country lives Jody Baxter with his Ma and Pa. They manage to make a decent living with their crops but there is always danger from bears, illness, and thunderstorms that last two weeks! Pa is a good-natured guy but Ma is tough and grim from years of living in the wild. Jody finds a young deer while out hunting and doesn't have the heart to kill such a helpless creature. Could he keep it as a pet? Pa doesn't mind but Ma doesn't want something else to feed. Besides, she says, wild animals won't grow up tame. What will happen when it starts eating their crops? And what will Jody do when that does happen? The answer will really hit you like a blow to the head. Don't think that this is just a cutesy boy-and-his-pet story; it's a real guy kind of book. There's the epic bear hunt that Jody takes with his Pa, the story of Jody's unlikely friendship with Fodder-wing, and what happens when Jody runs away. These events will stay in your mind for a long time. I can't say enough about this book. Go and read it!!! It's long, yes, but long in a good way. Like The Lord of the Rings, it's long but you don't want it to end. I read after I had an operation and had to stay out of work for a month. I was up one night and wanted to read a few pages before going to bed---and stayed up for hours until I finished it. I couldn't stop reading! You won't either!! Go find it!!!
Carl

Thanks for putting me up on your blog. I just wanted to say that I've started the fourth book, and right now I'm on page 73. I'm already enjoying the book alot, especially the way Riordan does action scene after action scene. I can't believe Percy screwed up and couldn't go on his date with Annabeth!! That made my so mad!
Hi everyone, I'm past the halfway mark of my reading club log. I finished Garfield: Older and Wider. It was great and really funny. A few had my mom and me really laughing. There is a "made you look" comic that I can't wait to try on someone. Garfield is by Jim Davis and this was the 41st book. The other book I finished was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling. I liked the book because it was a little different than the movie. I liked the basilisk (I think snakes are cool). I also liked the play on Tom Riddle's name.
I saw the comment made by Cassie, and I've got a question for her..
Why would you not want Percy to hook up with Annabeth??
I finished the "Battle of the Labrynth" and I personally think it's the best in the series so far. Obviously, Percy can't go out with Calypso because he'll never find her island again. As for Rachel, I think that she likes Percy, but I think if he had a choice, Percy would rather go out with Annabeth. So, please answer my question Cassie, because I would like to know...
Hey, everyone, life goes on. It's still sad, but I know what my mom would say at a time like this: "Well, don't sit around and mope about me--you've got work to do!" So I've put my myself back into gear and found some good stuff to do--like the first meeting of our Percy Jackson Summer Book Club. Boy, did we have a good time!! We had some lively discussion, some games, and even learned a little Greek!! Here are some pictures:
Every good time has to start with snacks! (one daughter of Athena studies her Greek mythology even during snack time)
Geting into the discussions!
One mom knits while kids talk (but is that really a mom or one of the Fates????)
This is my good friend Fred. He's a real, honest-to-goodness college professor. He knows how to read and write Greek. He's showing us how to write "Hercules" ("Herakles") as the Greeks would have. He also wrote several of the kids' names in Greek!!
And at the end I passed out the Camp Half-Blood T-shirts that were so generously supplied by Becky, who turns out to be none other than Mrs. Riordan herself!!!Thank you, Mrs. Riordan!! This was extremely good of you.
We plan to have the second half of our book club in August, when we'll talk about the 3rd and 4th books.
On a different note, Bill is going to do another Heroes Bold from Days of Lore program this Thursday. It'll be The Death of King Arthur, another of the truly great stories of all time. If you're between 8 and 11 and can get to Imaginon this Thursday at 2 pm, you gotta hear it!!
Later, Carl

As you can see, we all had fun at the Percy Jackson Summer Book Club Kickoff Party last Saturday. There were a lot of games--Athena sent word searches, the Minotaur dropped off mazes (glad he didn't stay!!), and everyone took turns at the Discus Toss. It's easy to do--just staple two paper plates together and you have a discus worthy of the original Olympic games. Poseidon was pleased to hear from Apollo that people in North and South Carolina have something called "beach music," so we all listened to that during the party. There was food, too. If you look closely at the first picture, you'll see, behind the kids, The Snack Table of the Gods. Hephaestus sent hot candy, Dionysus sent Diet Coke and juice drinks, and Aphrodite, naturally, sent sweets--including kisses!!
We're going to meet June 21 and talk about the first two books, then talk about the last two in July. It looks like we have a fun group and just about the right size. (We've got eight so far, with 3 more possibly coming) The girl in the baseball cap is named Anna, so we called her Annabeth!! (It's not a Yankees cap, so she couldn't turn invisible) We'll keep you informed! Are there any other Percy Jackson book clubs out there this summer? Let us know!
BTW, Poseidon did show up:
OK, so it's me and not the sea king. You could say I'm all wet for saying that!! Hardeee har har!! That claim couldn't hold water!!!Ha ha ha ha!!! Oh, I should be a comedian--I'd make a big splash!!!!Oh, ha ha ha...ha....why am I the only one laughing???
Carl
PS--be sure to sign up for the Kids Love Comics workshop!

Yes, if you needed another reason to attend our Percy Jackson Summer Book Club, we've got one! We received a message from a mysterious person named Becky who has promised us something great:
Hey Carl,
You all rock! Let us know how many guys show up for the book club and we will send Camp t-shirts for the group!
Becky
Well, that's awfully good of you, Becky! Did you hear that, guys? If you attend our club, you'll get a Camp Half-Blood T-shirt!!! Isn't that too cool? Even more reason to show up! If you've never seen one, here's a picture of one of our regular readers who got one :
But---if you do show up, you're going to be expected to come to the book club. You can't just come to the party and expect to get a free T-shirt. No, sir! You got to attend to get one. So come on, guys! Show us what you're made of and we'll reward you with a shirt.
BTW, you may have noticed that our mysterious benefactor is a girl. I have to let you know that this book club won't necessarily be a boys-only club and we may have some girls there. But if you've attended our Heroes Bold From Days of Lore programs, you'll know that we've had girls there and they've been cool. But, have no fear, me lads, we have a couple of guys-only events planned for this summer!! Stayed tuned to this blog to find out!
Carl
PS--We also have a comment from our friend Rowdy Roddy at the Guys Read blog:
Hey Guys,
Sounds like a cool party, I know quite a few guys around here that would love to be able to attend. We will look forward to a report.
Rowdy Roddy
They can't come because they live far away. So let's not disappoint them! Show up and give them a good report!

It seems like this has been Percy Jackson Month for me! It's been just about all I've written about this May. Well, between waiting for the new book and reading it, it's been on my mind a lot. But, hey, it's been good becuase I really enjoyed it. And now I have something else PJ-related to tell you about-our Percy Jackson Summer Book Club! That's right--we're going to have our own book club here. To start it off, we're going to have a kickoff party!!
If you're a fan, or if you've never read any of the books, this is the party for you!! It'll be this Saturday, May 31, from 2-3 pm in The Round here at Imaginon. We'll have fun things to do and copies of The Lightning Thief to check out for our book club (as well as some of the other books). And you can dress up as your favorite character from the books or from Greek mythology. When will the club meet? We'll decide that at the party. Come on out, guys! We'll have a great time and a great book club. Call us at 704-973-2720 if you have questions.
Hope to see you there,
Carl <?xml:namespace prefix = v /><?xml:namespace prefix = o />

No, not toe-tagged. Though that would be interesting, because that would mean I was writing from the grave. Nope, I've been tagged by Rachel to provide five random things about myself. Here we go!
1. In high school, I was an assistant manager at a fast food and as such, I got free food. I drank one milkshake of each of their four flavors every single day I worked. I gained fifteen pounds that summer.
2. I sat on David Cassidy's lap in the 1990s. I hung the photo on my bulletin board at work and told everyone he was my boyfriend.
3. When I saw Brian Regan this September, I made my husband hang outside the stage door with me until Brian came out. Brian gave me a hug, signed my program, and let me take a picture with him. It's all here.
4. In junior high, I signed up for the play just to get out of classes. I was the turkey.
5. I played drums starting in fourth grade. My career ended in eighth grade when I was constantly relegated to the bass drum or the cymbals, while the boys got to play the snares. I'd lost interest by that time, anyway--my drumroll was rather staccato, and those 10 lb cymbals were awfully hard to hold ("Hold them UP, Danette!) at football games.
In other news, my little mommy is leaving earlier than expected--she and new hubby have found houses on Florida's west coast they like. So, she leaves in the morning, but if all goes well, it'll then just be a two hour drive instead of that 24 hour drive to Michigan!
Okay, I'm going to take you up on this one, because it's been a while.
By the way, my mother was a drummer in her high school band and quit, she said, because it wasn't cool for teenage girls in her generation to play drums in the high school band. The anecdote inspired one of my brothers to take up the drums in grade school, and he plays to this day.

Stephen, So glad you're taking up the chain. Probably all kinds of good luck will come your way, like one dollar each from thousands of people you don't know, or maybe some potholders.
Rachel said, on 12/14/2007 9:49:00 AM
Thanks for playing Danette. Now, you must get back to shopping! (Love the shake story)
LindaBudz said, on 12/14/2007 1:54:00 PM
Fifteen pounds, LOL ... I'm sure that was traumatic. But just think how much you'd gain nowadays if you did that! Ah, to be a teen for just one more summer... the shakes I'd drink!
Danette Haworth said, on 12/14/2007 2:01:00 PM
My debit card's seeing a lot of action, Rachel!
Linda, Oh, yeah! And these were excellent milkshakes, hence my need to sample all four flavors each day.
courtney said, on 12/14/2007 2:02:00 PM
eee! Yay to being tagged! I will definitely get to it this weekend. :)
PS: #2 is the best random thing I have ever read about anyone! EVER!
Danette Haworth said, on 12/14/2007 2:08:00 PM
Oh Courtney, he was so good looking! And actually, I almost passed on the opportunity.
He was signing his latest CD and my friend was dying to see him. We drove for almost an hour to the music store and when we got there, this line snaked through the aisles and out of the store. I told my friend "Let's skip it." I didn't want to wait in that line. But then I peeked in and saw this gorgeous man sitting there and I was like "Hurry up! Get in line!"
It was totally worth it!

Thank you, Angela! Every one of my family members has their own idea, but my mom came up with one that just captured it! I'm looking forward to the artist's (or my editor's) vision!

very cool randomness!

Congratulations with the progress of your novel! You have this news buried between a post on sneezes and a meme? Girlfriend!!
With such an evocative title, I am also curious and anxious to see the art that goes with it. And I really can't wait to read it, Danette. Thanks for sharing your journey here.
Also thanks for the tag...I will try my best to adhere to it! ;-)
Mussel Bound said, on 12/15/2007 9:37:00 AM
Wow, you look a lot thinner here than you do over at the Church Lady's house of worship. You're about six times wider over there, as if you never kicked your four shake a day habit.
In my junior high, drama was a class, no getting out of class for rehearsals, but I took it anyway and enjoyed it a lot. If not for the whole being famous thing, acting would be a great profession.
Found houseS on the Florida coast? Like, one each? Real estate must be a lot more affordable than it is up here in Washington state. (ha ha, somehow I doubt that :^D)

Ello! Talk about a full plate!
Mussell Bound, I know! It's all due to an amazing weight loss program, which Church Lady and I plan to hawk on our blogs.
Ha! Travis, I read your post and I feel the same way. I've handed WRITTEN orders to the order taker and still received my burger incorrectly prepared!
Hey Bill, Carl, & now Zack,
It's great that you guys have had the second meeting of the Percy Jackson club! It's even coooler that you decided to record it and put it onto your blog. I hope your club continues to go well!
