1. good news galore

Hello from sunny, temperate England (utterly unlike the New York I left, which was somehow both overcast-muggy and 8,000 degrees). And apologies again for the neglect in this time of Busy. But in the meantime, I have tons of things to announce.

First, you still have until midnight tonight to enter the contest! And let's be totally honest--I'm not going to be back at my computer again until Sunday, so if you're running a little late--like three days late--I'm probably not going to notice. No one has suggested a prize yet, either, so I'm still open for suggestions.

In other mischief, lots of of old friends have great news!

Ebony McKenna's debut novel, ONDINE, a fairytale-mystery, was just released in Canada. Congrats, Ebony, and I can't wait to see it in BNN as well as Indigo :)

Anita Laydon Miller, our friendly Colorado book reviewer, has landed a literary agent--she's just signed with Sara Megibow of Nelson Literary. You go, Anita! Let us know how your adventures unfold!

It's a hot day in Colorado. Stephanie Blake (also known as Colorado Writer) has just landed a book deal! Robin Benjamin at Marshall Cavendish has bought Stephanie's debut, THE MARBLE QUEEN, for publication in 2012.

I feel a special victory here because all three of these ladies have been online friends for a long, long time. It's, like, victory for everybody. Congrats, everybody! Keep making me proud :)

2. tons of good news

Lots going on in our part of the blogosphere...

First, a bunch of his friends have put together a huge online party, complete with prizes, presents, and games, for the release of Stephen Parrish's new book. And writing contests. I know "contest" is the magic word for a bunch of addicts around here, so run off and submit!

Next, devilish good news, my very dear friend Ellen Oh has just signed with the stellar agent Joe Monti. I'm SO happy for her. I know a lot of you guys know and love Ello as much as I do, so this is a big victory for the team!

Finally, he's so modest that I had to figure it out for myself, but very very long-time EdAss reader and commenter Charles Gramlich just had a book come out! Bitter Steel, a collection of epic fantasy stories, is available from Borgo Press.

As for me, I'm still icky-busy over here (you know, though, in a good way). But I will be doing Saturday's Write Your @$$ Off Day! The official goal is 3,000 words in one day, but my goal will be just to devote a couple steady hours to writing. I'm still working on that project that came to me in my dream, just like what happened to Stephenie Meyer.

That's all for now!

4. good news!

Happy Wednesday! (And boy is it!) I'm still too busy to blog, but Mischief people are not to busy to have awesome news!

First, Natasha Solomons's debut novel was released in the UK (where it is called MR ROSENBLUM'S LIST) by Sceptre on April 1st! The US release date is June 21 (Reagan Arthur books is publishing it under the title MR ROSENBLUM DREAMS IN ENGLISH). I've asked Natasha if she'll do a guest post in June, and she's offered to talk about generating word-of-mouth publicity for novels.

Second, Caroline Starr Rose's middle grade novel-in-verse, MAY B, sold to Nicole Geiger at Tricycle! It's releasing Fall 2011. (I just noticed Caroline is represented by my friend Michelle Humphrey--now I'm doubly excited about this deal!)

Two people to congratulate! Keep the good news comin', folks :)

9. Wings'n on Up!

Wow, ok, I haven't had a Mischief announcement of this size I think, umm, ever before. But Aprilynne Pike, who's been a blog friend two years now (I remember the first time you linked to me, Aprilynne--it was July of 2007, and you had to nicely explain to your mom why why my blog wasn't quite as profane as the title seemed!), wrote a YA book called Wings, which has JUST DEBUTED AT #6 ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST!!!!

Um, yeah. I knew you when!!!!

10. joyous fantastic day!!!!!

I've just... I've just been waiting for this for so long, it's hard to even type!!! Finally!! Cindy Pon's ecstatically wonderful debut, a young adult historical fantasy, hits stores today!!

Silver Phoenix is more than just a great read--it's already revolutionizing the fantasy genre with its spunky and loveable Chinese heroine, Ai Ling.

This book is the real thing--check out the starred Booklist review (starred!!! you know how often they give out stars?!):

If the cover image of a fearless Chinese heroine reminds readers of such films as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, that’s intentional; the story inside will, too. First-time novelist Pon has a screenwriter’s talent for producing a sweeping saga, and in this, the first of two books set in ancient China, 17-year-old Ai Ling faces demons, monsters, and gods as she tries to fulfill her destiny. Frightened after a local man tries to blackmail her into marriage, Ai Ling resolves to journey to the emperor’s palace where her missing father was last seen. Along the way, she meets the handsome Chen Yong, who is of mixed parentage and on a quest to find answers to questions about his family that have haunted him his whole life. (In the story’s prologue, readers get hints about his origins.) As in most martial-arts movies, the story sometimes takes a back seat to the action, but Pon doesn’t stint when it comes to her characters. Ai Ling is a clever and determined heroine, Chen’s younger brother is a witty teen whose girl-crazy ways transcend the centuries, and even the monsters have dimension. Pon’s writing, both fluid and exhilarating, shines whether she’s describing a dinner delicacy or what it feels like to stab an evil spirit in the gut. There’s a bit of sex here, including a near rape, but it’s all integral to a saga that spins and slashes as its heroine tries to find her way home.

or the blurb from Meg Cabot:

“I couldn't put it down. Your heart will be racing, and you'll be aching for more. An addictive gem.”
~Meg Cabot, author of The Princess Diaries and Airhead series

or the blurb from Alyson Noel:

“Beautifully written, lush, exotic, and romantic, with a gutsy heroine who defies convention to fulfill her destiny—Silver Phoenix has it all! Cindy Pon has penned a remarkable debut, and I can’t wait to see what she writes next!”
-Alyson Noel, New York Times bestselling author of Evermore

Ok. I need to go calm down; I'm overly excited. Congratulations, Cindy!!

18. yet ANOTHER one for the Mischief!!!!

I don't think we've had an Editorial Mischief announcement in... well, a couple of days, so I guess we were ripe for a book sale!! Or even a two-book deal!!

Congratulations, Christy, long-time Ed Ass visitor! I couldn't be happier.

Christy Raedeke’s PROPHECY OF DAYS, pitched as a YA Da Vinci Code relating to the Mayan calendar which mysteriously ends in 2012, in which a teen, with the help of a gorgeous Scottish lad, must figure out her role in a cryptic prophecy while trying to outwit a secret society that will stop at nothing to control her, to Andrew Karre at Flux, in a nice deal, in a two-book deal, for publication in Summer 2010, by Laura Rennert at Andrea Brown Literary Agency (NA).

20. one more for the Editorial Mischief!

Today, Andromeda Romano-Lax's The Spanish Bow hits stores in paperback. I've got my fingers crossed that the paperback edition will inspire basically everyone in America to see how awesome this book is.

Andromeda is going to be stopping by for the 10/01 Book Club when we feature The Spanish Bow, and I'll surely be grilling her about her fairytale debut novelist manuscript-to agent-to book experience.

Congratulations!

22. one more for the Mischief!

Stuart Neville (aka Conduit) has sold his debut novel, THE GHOSTS OF BELFAST, to Harvill Secker (a very fine literary imprint at Random House UK) in a two book deal!! That means they love him double.

Check out his book page for a) a trailer for this thrilling thriller set in Northern Ireland, and b) an idea of what a great author web page looks like. Then you can go congratulate him on his blog.

I read the "jacket copy" when he entered my contest in January and boy was I, personally, sold. Unfortunately, I haven't read the novel yet myself, but Stuart has promised to send me a copy of the manuscript when it's all done with editorial. Actually, he hasn't, but this is a kind of form of public extortion. Pretty pretty please, Conduit? No pressure, just kidding. Sort of.

One more success for the Editorial Mischief.

24. good news :)

Hi kids. Sorry I've been neglectful. I'm TOTALLY swamped with some really exciting projects right now. I do have a lot to catch up on, though. Some quick news: Conduit has locked himself down a very excellent agent. Further evidence that this friendly blogging community is disproportionately talented. Congratulations, again and again! 25. Poetry Friday: Chrysalis

Mary Logue is a award-winning Minnesota writer of adult novels, children's novels, and poetry. She taught the very first class I took at the Loft Literary Center. Now she and her partner, National Book Award-winning Pete Hautman (how's that for a powerhouse writing couple...geez!) live and sometimes write together (see their Bloodwater mystery middle grade series).

Anyway, I love Mary's poetry. Her first collection that I was aware of, was Discriminating Evidence. Recently, I came across a new collection called Meticulous Attachment.

This book had lots of wonderful poems in it. Here's one of my very favorites.

Chrysalis

The end result is
a jewel of a house,
lime-green capsule
dotted with gold leaf,
but the resignation
with which it's done
makes me think there's pain
involved: the last desperate
munching of milkweed leaves,
the search for the solid branch,
the meticulous attachment.

The caterpillar swings free
and hangs upside down
in a question mark.
I can almost hear it wonder--
why am I doing this?

As the body splits,
it shrugs out of its skin
to hang--green teardrop--
in wide open space,
waiting for wings.

---Mary Logue

Great metaphor for writing, too, was my first thought. I love the jewel of a house, the desperate munching, and that gorgeous final line.

The roundup is at Big A little a today!
