1. Is Marvel’s Relaunch Stumbling Out of the Gate?

The November sales estimate headlines are all about how the market is up, owing to Dark Knight 3, Vader Down and a metric ton of Marvel’s relaunched #1’s. You expect a certain amount of that. Stunts sell, as long as the publishers don’t over-extend the market for variant covers (and they sure seem aggressive in emphasizing those instead of the content in between the covers). What you’d miss out on if you only read the headlines is that Marvel’s #2 and #3 issues aren’t getting a ton of traction relative to those gaudy #1 sales totals.

Welcome to the cynical circle, Todd! :)
Only two comments:
– comparing Dr strange and Thor numbers doesn’t seem fair at all, especially for the Doctor. The last ongoing serie for the doctor was so much time ago that there is no real point of comparaisons, except that Dr strange was never a huge seller, but did manage to keep its ongoing title during more than 20 years.
– the creator mix is quite different. Many names are new and some associatiosn are quite new, let’s be fair. We can’t say that Marvel hasn’t put a lot of innovative titles with this relaunch. Of course, if you only lokk at the big titles, nothing has changed much, but the rest of their catalog is quite daring and innovative (and expensive too :p ).

Looking at the diamond numbers for the past couple of years gives such a flawed idea as to how its doing. Its not like the way it was in the past where the direct market is the main sales number and even then the Diamond numbers were still flawed. It doesn’t take into account the rather sizable digital numbers, where books like Spider-Gwen have such a huge audience that’s not reflected in these numbers. All the numbers to is allow people to manipulate them and show a small example in order to push their agenda.

And where can we see this digital numbers? I can totally believe Spider-Gwen selling big online but I’d like to check out the sales figures myself.

Bob, who’s your source on Spider-Gwen’s digital sales? The only digital comic at Marvel I’ve gotten confirmation *from Marvel* on a consistently percentage of digital sales is Ms. Marvel. From what I could tell, and I couldn’t get a straight enough answer to suit me, Ms. Marvel seemed to be selling close to (but not quite) print numbers in digital. Which was an anomaly. If Spider-Gwen is doing the same, then that’s two books out of the entire line.

Depending on who you talk to, digital is still 10%-15% of total sales and since there’s no more newsstand for Marvel, that leaves 85%-90% of the sales to Diamond. It reflects the reality of the Direct Market, where many retailers rely on Marvel to get them into the profit column each month.

But really, accusing somebody who wrote a book on how the digital market works of ignoring digital to push a print agenda? Grow up. There’s better trolling to be done than that.

To be fair on Dr Strange, Marvel tied the incentive for variants on Dr Strange to Thor, so Marvel expected some sort of comparison. Sadly it was exceed 175% of Thor to get the variants, so they expected it to far outsell Thor

From an artist perspective that Iron Man Cover looks okay, but the computer lettering with all those style filters (embossing) added looks hideous. I don’t collect super hero books these days, but I would think all the movies and cartoons out there are creating a somewhat over saturation of the market. Perhaps people are looking elsewhere for something new. Rebranding of things don’t make for new.

Marvel need to do something to create buzz beyond the first issue. How they do this I don’t have the answer, but I would say this would need to be a long term thing and not reliant of the variant covers. Possibly they could do a big push on the tpb collections with an attempt get people to jump onto the floppies after.

Once the delays and extra issue were announced I dropped Secret Wars. It was the first Marvel event I’ve indulged in since 2010 and I don’t see any reason to do these anymore.

I’m trying all of the #1s but reboot fatigue, lack of star talent and cost are looking like ANAD is a jumping off point for me. It’s looking like I’ll settle around the 6-7 title mark where pre-Secret Wars I was at the 15-16 title level.

Same thing happened with DC’s reboot too though. These reboots tend to shake the tree enough that I guess I’m one of the old base that falls off and haven’t really come back in any substantive way. I guess it’s up to some new fan to take my place at the superhero shops at this point.

I suppose Marvel should just switch over to an “every issue is a #1” relaunch! Maybe an Amazing Spider-Man #1, Amazing Spider-Man #1 (and in tiny print 1.1) and A,mazing Spider-Man #1 (1.2), and so on. ;) I jest, I jest, but I swear, this is how it’s going. At some point the companies (not the fans) decided the only thing that sells are #1’s and variant covers. It’s the usual short-term money making thinking, unfortunately. And the fanboys blindly fall into the trap, and become addicted to the idea, as well.

But also, wow, the new creative teams on these relaunches are just a big no for me. Even my best friend, and we’ve both read comics since we were in grade school, told me every single Avengers relaunch is horrible. We both bought them all before the relaunch, after, every single one dropped. And The Vision, Starbrand and NightMask, Scarlet Witch, Dr. Strange, etc. – it’s just a personal preference, but the whole “indie” art thing at Marvel has killed my desire to buy these books, books that, if they had a more “traditional Marvel art style” I’d probably snatch up! I think overall the relaunch is just a mess in terms of characters and creative teams.

I personally like more “realistic” artwork, which is why most of my money goes to Independents now. Butch Guice, Alex Maleev (one hold=over at Marvel), Mike Perkins (the other), Michael Lark, Bill Sienkiewicz, Steve Epting, Gabriel Hardman, etc. All, at one point, Marvel artists…

Welcome to my 12th and final month as your guide through Marvel’s sales numbers. Due to some career changes and advancements that my family and I have made, I can no longer write these articles. It has been fun and a great learning experience, and I thank you for joining me. But enough about me, let’s look at the monthly breakdown.

So as I was writing this article, Marvel made a big announcement about Secret Wars, and pretty much changed everything I was going to say. So I went through and altered the analysis to reflect the news that apparently the Marvel Universe as we know it is ending and possibly getting rebooted/ relaunched/ combined in some sort of new configuration later this year.

As we dig into the numbers, we’ll be looking at how the new Secret Wars news might affect the titles over the next couple months and asking lots of questions.

Spider-verse keeps Spider-Man sales above 100k. There are 4 issues left (the event is scheduled to end in February), and hopefully the sales can stay this strong for the remainder for the series. Obviously Spider-man is going to stick around after Secret Wars as it is Marvel’s best seller; however there are some aspects of continuity that they could undo or redo. Perhaps the marriage to Mary Jane will make a comeback, or even their long lost daughter will return. Spider-Verse has also introduced a lot of new popular Spider characters and it will be interesting to see where they end up.

3. SHIELD #1
12/14  SHIELD #1 -  94,503

SHIELD debuts with a strong 94k. This series introduces the Agents of SHIELD TV characters to the 616 Marvel Universe in shorter 1 to 2 issue story arcs. Keep an eye on how far it drops next month; a healthy 35 to 40% drop will keep it above 55k. It will be interesting to see how Secret Wars affects some of these newer popular series. It makes sense for something like Shield to tie-in to a world-altering event, and maybe the universe-melding will allow them to incorporate more Marvel Cinematic Universe elements.

The new Thor sits at a very comfortable 70k for issue 3. Of Marvel’s recent debuts, Thor currently has the strongest sales, and hopefully it will settle nicely between 50k and 60k, which would put it well above the 35k to 40k level of the previous Thor series. As revealed on the Secret Wars 2 cover yesterday, many Thors from different universes and timelines will be present in Secret Wars. Will the new Thor stick around after the universe-meld? These sales numbers suggest maybe it should.

7. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1
12/14  Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 -  71,284

The Spider-Man annual does not tie in to Spider-Verse, but even without the support of the event the annual sells 70k which is the lowest the main Spider-Man series ever gets between events.

Axis sold well for an Uncanny Avengers issue but pretty poorly for a big event book. Even with the accelerated release schedule it dropped to half of its debut sales. The new Uncanny Avengers debuts next month. As we’ve discussed in the past, Marvel’s recent event books are slipping in the sales lately. The question is will a line-wide universe-altering event help get people interested in events again or turn them off even more?

Wolverine kicked the bucket so Spider-Man heads to the Jean Grey School to help teach the X-kids. Spidey doubles the normal sales for Wolverine and the X-Men for its debut month, but if it follows the standard issue 2 40% drop, its sales will be right back where they were very quickly. If the sales follow the recent trends for this series, I expect it will be more of a placeholder until Secret Wars changes the line-up of the x-books.

15. ANGELA: ASGARD’S ASSASSIN
12/14  Angela #1 -  61,398

Angela debuts at 60k. Like most debuts the key to its success will be how big the month 2 and 3 drops are. The sweet spot seems to be between 30k and 40k for a lot of these single character books. Angela is a very interesting new addition to the Marvel universe and one I expect will even more integrated to whatever universe comes out of the back end of Secret Wars.

Slight drop for All-New X-Men this month, but it stays in its normal 55k to 60k spot that it has been living in for a while. The upcoming Guardians Black Vortex crossover should help both series boost their sales a bit in the coming months. What happens to the original time-displaced X-Men during the universe-melding should be very interesting. Which X-Men and mutants make it through to the other side will be one of the aspects of this whole event that everyone should watch closely.

21. UNCANNY X-MEN

Uncanny X-Men has been fluctuating between 50k and 55k for a while now and this month’s drop still keeps it in that same sales range. This series has been slowly building towards some potentially big changes in the lineups and teams of the X-universe, but will those organic changes lead to new X-books or will the end of the universe create an entire new X-men lineup?

First issue in a few months without a themed variant backing it up, and Guardians drops almost 10k copies. Luckily, there is a crossover called Black Vortex starting soon which should boost the Guardians back up to at least 60k. Expect the new Marvel Universe to have a lot of Guardians books in it, as they are now one of Marvel’s sales pillars.

Avengers marches towards Secret Wars as time continues to run out. However, sales continue to drop as well. The big question on my mind is why is Marvel’s arguably biggest event yet, their reboot, spinning out of two series that aren’t best sellers? The last event to spin out of Hickman’s Avengers books started strong, but ended rather poorly. Can the size and consequences of Secret Wars overcome the lackluster sales of its lead in books? That will be the big question come May.

The April solicits suggest they are building toward Deadpool’s death in the issue 250 special, but this is Deadpool so it’s unclear if that will be a real or played for laughs. Then again, it can all be undone in Secret Wars so why not kill him?

So a helpful commenter (thanks Randy C.) pointed out that the big boost to Inhumans #8 last month was due to Marvel shipping stores extra books to cross-promote with the Agents of SHIELD mid-season finale Inhumans reveal. So these lower numbers are much closer to Inhuman’s true sales numbers. Oddly enough despite this book not selling very well at all, Marvel is adding a second Inhumans book in April. This is likely due to the importance of the Inhumans to their overall publishing and film plans. Expect Inhumans to be an even bigger part of the Marvel Universe after Secret Wars.

I’m hoping this is more of a “Crisis On Infinite Earths” type of deal, rather than a “Flashpoint”.

I wonder how much sales of Axis would have fallen if it wasn’t triple-shipped and retailers had been able to adjust numbers accordingly. To me, it was easily the worst “event” series since Fear Itself (if not worse than that one…)

I wonder what Marvel is going to try to do to drum up the sales on Captain Marvel before calling it a day…I have my doubts that the Black Vortex crossover is going to do much, though I’m sure the inevitable Ms. Marvel crossover will help.

I definitely hope there is some sort of thinning of the Avengers & X-Men lines post Secret Wars. I feel like titles are essential eating themselves and diluting the lines as a whole.

@Kev – The Carol Corps is certain to get a Secret Wars book because a portion of Battleworld is allocated to Captain Marvel. I could see this as the perfect opportunity to do a Captain Marvel/Ms. Marvel team-up book.

It’s pretty amazing that we’re getting to the point that in the next few months it’s possible that outside of first issues both the top AVENGERS book and the top X-MEN book will both have sales under 50k in the North American direct market. I’m pretty sure either franchise sinking that low is unprecedented in the modern history of the direct market, for both to reach new lows at the same time doesn’t look good on current management. And I’m not sure how much a reboot or relaunch or whatever they’re doing will help since the architects of that will be mostly the same people bringing in these sales.

Guardians 3000 drops a quarter of its sales this month. Of all the new Guardians books this one is selling the worst, perhaps it because these character aren’t as well known as the ones featured in the movie?

September is always an interesting month because DC does its big line-wide event with crazy covers and Marvel has to find a way to compete. The answer this year was Death of Wolverine, which shipped two issues this month and landed the number 1 and number 2 spots. DC still won overall market share, but Marvel still managed to make a few headlines themselves and capture those top two spots. Beyond those books, there is a lot of standard attrition this month and a lot of books ramping up for AXIS which is likely to lead into several new series and rebooted series over the next few months. Below is a breakdown of some of this month’s stats which includes a rise in the number of $4.99 books, which is very interesting.

Even with DC winning the month overall, Marvel did quite well for itself this month. Death of Wolverine is doing well and AXIS and Spider-verse are right around the corner. Some of their prologue books are already doing quite well. There are some books near the bottom that are on the edge of cancellation but there are plenty of opportunities on the horizon for relaunches after these events wrap up.

One interesting thing to note is that many of the single character series that started as part of Marvel Now are falling into the low 20k range pretty quickly (Cyclops, Storm, She-Hulk, Punisher and a few others). So my questions for you readers are: Do you think that focusing on these characters is a misstep? Do these characters just not have what it takes to hold a solo title, or do you think that perhaps 22k is just what a book like Cyclops is likely to sell? What do other series like Hawkeye, Daredevil, and Ms. Marvel do differently that helps them stay above 30k?

Next month we’ll be looking at Axis, more Death of Wolverine and the new Thor series, which are all expected to deliver high sales.

Historically, none of the X-men except for Wolverine have been able to headline a solo series for very long, so it’s not surprising stuff like Cyclops and Storm are dropping off. Also didn’t help that Cyclops was hyped up with a major creator that quickly left the book. Same goes for Moon Knight starting with Warren Ellis and Uncanny Avengers starting with John Cassaday only to have those handed over after a handful of issues.

Punisher has an excellent writer/artist team right now so this could just be one of those cases like Thor: The Mighty Avenger where a quality book just doesn’t catch on for whatever reason.

And is sub-20k physical sales still the cancellation threshold? The companies don’t release digital sales info but piecing together different news sources says digital sales currently tend to be anywhere from 10%-25% or more of print sales.

Hi Johnny,

Great question regarding the cancellation threshold. There is no official number where you fall below and you get axed, but it seems from looking at this data over the past few years that if a book hits 20k, cancellation talks start happening, I would imagine that to cover the cost to produce a monthly book and break even, a Marvel series probably needs to sell 15k. So as a book reaches 20k, the company probably says to the creator “hey take a few months to wrap up your story and get enough issues for one more trade collection” That way if a book is currently selling 20k, by the time it wraps up in 2 to 4 months time, it is still slightly above 15k when it ends and is still slightly profitable. Of course that is my only speculation just based off my own knowledge of the costs of printing, distributing and creating books and some experts I’ve talked to. I don’t have any actual inside info on how Marvel makes these decisions. There could be other factors too like is that character going to be featured in other marvel properties and they want them to stay visible, is that character making them more money from licensing, etc.

Digital is estimated to be about 10-25% but without digital numbers we really have no idea. When we see these numbers above we are only seeing monthly sales to comic stores. We do not see digital or graphic novel sales. We do not see what is actually bought by customers, just what stores order. So the speculation above is my estimate at the numbers we do consistently see and the trends I can identify from this data. Until we can somehow convince publishers to release regular digital sales data, we really have no idea.

A few thoughts:
I’m with Johnny, the loss of high profile creators after a few issues is realllllly not helping sales. That, combined with frequent relaunches, is making me switch to trade-waiting on more and more books.

re: Original Sin/crossovers boosting sales – i’d be curious, if you had a chance, to see how the various marvel event books have sold, relative to each other. We are now at two events per year, is this sustainable or a hail mary?

Avengers World: can’t really see it being too long for this world. It seemed to be showcasing the Hickman Avengers cast in non-Hickman stories. With all the changes to the team (with the 8 month time jump), I can’t imagine there’s much point to its continued existence.

X-Men, Amazing X-Men: just put these books out of their misery. Both only existed because Marvel briefly had a few big name creators do a few issues. They are now just chugging along, doing bad stories with no-name creators.

So… Rocket Raccoon now sells better than The Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Daredevil. WHO would have EVER guessed that would happen?! :)

She-Hulk, Storm – Marvel will never learn. When you have a second tier title like this the #1 thing you don’t do is go and put in a fill-in artist within the first four issues. People are still trying to decide if they’re sticking around or not. The artist on the two part fill-in for She-Hulk scared a ton of people away, and I didn’t even pick up the third issue of Storm, because of the fill-in. But, unlike others who just dropped the titles, I continued to pick them up post fill-ins.

What do we learn here? Well Original Sin #1 sold worse than everything but Siege and Fear itself. The final Original Sin however did sell worse than all the other events. When you look at the drop off, you see that most events lose between 30% and 50% from start to finish, and Original Sin fell right in the middle.

Hard to tell if this is due to Event fatigue or just lower interest in Original Sin, but I’ll run something like this for Axis #1 and we can see where it falls compared to these other events.

The $3.99 price point doesn’t seem to affect sales to any noticeable level. People buy events and series that “matter” and not much else. I skip the events and just follow the few characters I like in their own series.

She Hulk looks like it’s going to get relaunched maybe. In today’s Axel column at CBR, Alonso discusses the series. I’m sure it will be $3.99.

I want to read more Marvel because I love the characters but it seems more and more that they just get a writer who is an indie favorite or a television writer or a comedian and say “Do whatever you want with our characters!” Fill-in artists are an issue for me as well, not so much that they’re fill in issues but if Marvel is promoting a particular book because Ed McGuiness is on art and he’s gone after three issues and his replacement looks nothing like his art, I don’t buy it.

PRICE!!

Cyclops, Storm, and Punisher are all $4 books. Meanwhile, Ms Marvel is a $3 book, and — until recently — Daredevil and Hawkeye were, too!

(Now, admittedly, She-Hulk has been selling under 30K *despite* being a $3 book, but there’s gotta be an exception to every rule… right?)
