Here’s more great reading for you: five stories we love from across all of WordPress.
Jake Threadgould
An account of one traveler’s stay in Iran:
On my second night in Iran I was invited to a party in a middle-class area of Tehran. Since we were a mixed gendered group with a foreigner (yours truly) in their midst, we had to be reasonably inconspicuous when we stepped out of the car and onto the street. As soon as we stepped over the threshold of the house, however, we were no longer in the Islamic Republic.

An examination of how the neighborhood of Highland Park in Los Angeles is quickly gentrifying. The team at Marketplace interviewed current and former residents, business owners, and investors and developers to paint a full picture of what’s occurring.

Broken City * Movie Review by Dawn Chartier
I give Broken City 3.5 stars out of 5. This was a crime drama, car crashing, shoot-em up type of movie which stars some really good actors, (Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe) but the plot was a same ole' same ole'. It lacked a better twist and more sub-plots.
Quick Summary: An ex-cop was hired by the Mayor (who is running for Mayor again) to investigate his wife. The ex-cop (who is now a P.I.) believes he is trying to capture pictures of the wife cheating on the Mayor, but it's not what it seems. The Mayor has a bigger agenda.
The Mayor takes the pictures from the P.I. and pays him, then bad things happen to wife's supposed lover who is the Mayor's rival campaign manager. The P.I. realizes the Mayor is up to no good, and then it's too late. The Mayor has proof against the P.I., and he can't get out of it. He has two choices. Do the right or wrong thing. I won't ruin the ending and tell you which one he does.
I like my movies with a little more thought out plot. But this might be just me, so I wouldn't say it was a waste of money, it just wasn't what I'd hoped for. (p.s. I didn't pay for this one, a friend won the tickets, and I enjoyed her company as always.)

Jennifer Lawrence, the star of The Hunger Games, may take a role in a film adaptation of The Silver Linings Playbook.
Novelist Matthew Quick debuted with The Silver Linings Playbook in 2008. David O. Russell wrote the screenplay and will direct the film.
Here’s more from The Huffington Post: “Lawrence would play Tiffany, the very attractive widowed wife of his best friend Ronnie. She begins to secretly pursue and mentor him as the two work to put their lives back together.”

Beyonce releases (a new video single — no, not “Girls.” “Move Your Body” is a remake of “Get Me Bodied” — with lyrics like “a little sweat never hurt nobody” — for Michelle Obama’s... Read the rest of this post
I don’t go out to theaters very often--it’s true. But earlier this year a friend and I went and saw Date Night, and among the previews was a trailer for a summer release, The Other Guys.

It immediately caught my interest. Not just because one of its stars happens to be Mark Wahlberg, for whom I have a teeny, tiny, so-small-it’s-hardly-worth-mentioning crush (and whose shirtless screen time in Date Night was both noted and appreciated by me). But also because the storyline of The Other Guys looked like a fresh spin on a cop buddy movie, and it came across as genuinely funny.
Yesterday I happened to notice that I was not alone in wanting to see it...that The Other Guys was the number one movie of the weekend. And reviewers are loving it. So now I really think I need to head out to a theater again...and soon.
But in the meantime, I happened upon this fun interview with Marky Mark on the Time Magazine Website, which can be read or viewed. And I will totally understand if feel you need to watch the video, especially if you happen to think he’s amazing to look at and want to hear more of his low, whispery voice...
A-hem! In any case, tell us, are there any movies on your list to see?

I used to really, really love cake.

Until I went into birthday cake overload:
--first at my office job, where it always seemed to be a co-worker's birthday (and in fact, SEINFELD did an episode on this very topic, and how sick Elaine got of it, too);
--then as the mother of little kids, who were constantly being invited to birthday parties, and whether or not I attended the shingdig, inevitably at pick-up time, I got handed a piece.
I got to the point that the mere sight of icing made my teeth hurt.
But that was then, and this is now. The years of office parties and little kid birthday parties are behind me...and I really, really love cake again. It's a huge treat that I actually find myself anticipating now. Like if I get invited to a wedding or baby shower, I start immediately thinking cake.
And after years of trying just about every flavor, texture and dimension--most of them quite tasty--I've come to the realization that I'm actually a wheat and sugar purist: you can send me to the moon on white cake and white butter cream frosting. Preferably with a chunk of rose and squiggle of HAPPY BIRTHDAY writing.
How about you? Love or hate cake? And have a special type that always does it for you?
* * * * *
And along the lines of cake and celebrations, allow me to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Mark Wahlberg for tying the knot this past weekend!

And what do you bet at their reception later, they served totally great cake?
