This is something a little different I wanted to try. It's water colour and pencil on hand made paper with paper and thread collaged on. I was inspired by the work of Gretel Parker and Lisbeth Zwerger, I wanted to do something with more subtlety and a looser feel. The paper has a slight greenish tinge and is very absorbent, both things that I had to contend with to make the picture work. The title, Thimble Witch, comes from a book by Holly Black called Valiant.

This is my drawing of the Princess from the Grimm's Fairy Tale The Twelve Brothers. I'm working on a book proposal for a picture book based on the story. It has such great imagery in it and I love the story. I've been looking at the books of Rebecca Dautremer and have been loving her well designed spreads, where everything flows. I've been letting myself be influenced by her books. I've never put together a proposal before and it's an interesting process. I just read Magic Pencil : Children's books today. It's a selection of contemporary British illustrators selected by Quentin Blake. Here is a quote by John Birmingham on drawing I really like : " Drawing is like playing piano, it's not a mechanical skill like bricklaying and you have to practice constantly to keep fluent. "
Everyone should check out Gretel's blog ( All Around Us, on my blog roll) to see her explain part of her process. I think she makes it look like magic.
Eric- I've just come across your blog... beautiful work!
I really like your pencil drawing style Eric. Good quote on drawing. I have not read The Twelve Brothers, I'll have to look for it.
Thanks Jennifer! I visited your blog too and it's wonderful. Your work is full of life and I have a thing for art that has lots of interesting details.
Thanks Frank. It's a good story. Not too gorey. It's something I've wanted to do for some time.
Eric, i think this is my first time visiting your blog and i think your works are wonderful! Agree with frank on your pencil sketches. And thanks for sharing with us such a great quote!
It sounds like a fun project (and I hope you still have your Nova Scotian trolls on the queue there somewhere!).
You might also enjoy looking at Helen Ward's books, the ones published in the last few years especially are breath-takingly designed. I adore her "Unwitting Wisdon".
p.s. (We apparently can't really get Rebecca Dautremer's work here in the states. Is she Canadian? French? Her work looks beautiful from the covers I can view, but not buy).
Hi Tara! The trolls are still coming, it's a longer book, maybe the size of the Fairy Chronicles and I thought I'd like to some picture books first.
Thanks for sending me to see Ms. Ward's work, it's really strange and inspiring.
Rebecca Dautremer lives in Paris. I'm having a hard time getting her stuff too. There is one book I got from Amazon.ca and my cousin, who lives just out side Paris sent me an other. I also have a lovely set of cards produced. I hope things are going well for you and you're not getting too distracted by the primaries!
Hi Constance! Thank you so much for your kind remarks! I love your work, the blend of Eastern influence and Western is amazing! I found your work through someone's comments... I wish I could remember whose, so I could tell you.
Hah, nice coincidence, I was just reading through Grimm's collection too this morning, looking for that story... I was always very impressed with the terrible ordeal of silence, and the grand finale.
Is this the girl going off to find her brothers? She sure looks questing...
Sure your book will be amazing.... Lovely character...! and R. Dautremer is one of my fauvorites, I didn“t realized how lucky I am having France so near; arrives a loads of books of her..!
cheers Eric..!
Heartily agree with that quote Eric, and that is a lovely little sketch there. Thanks for the mention BTW!
I drank beer with Helen Ward round a camp fire at a publishers party a couple of years ago...(not name dropping at all!). She is quite shy, but very gentle and lovely, and one of the best draughtswomen in the UK at the moment.
Viviane-She is off to find her brothers! You should do a 12 Brothers book too! I've always been curious to see what 2 people make of the same story. And it would make me work harder.
Thanks Eva! Europe gets a lot a of great books it's very hard to find here. I once spent 100 canadian dollars to buy a very slim book with illustrations by the illustrator John Bauer, and it was in Swedish, which I can't read.
Thanks Gretel! That's so weird that someone in Washington suggests an artist to me and someone in England casually says they had drinks. I'm trying a traditional watercolour right now, I'm gonna try and do washes like you.
Your work is awesome, enjoying the line quality and loseness of it!!
Thanks Albert! I love your stuff too! How did you find me?
