This post is not intended to make the next YA Librarian at Liliha library feel intimidated or inferior, (Tina I think you’re awesome!) I just wanted to blog about my feelings… I miss Sheryl and it hasn’t been that long. Technically I shouldn’t be missing her yet because it’s not like we see each other on a regular basis or correspond frequently, but there was something reassuring about having her around to talk to, bounce ideas off of, and glean information from. I know she’s still around in a different capacity and will no doubt be an awesome adult services librarian, BUT she was one of my YA Librarian heroes. Not saying that everyone else who’s still in YA is chopped liver, but it’s going to be odd not having Sheryl around at the meetings. It was always great to hear about her TAG, her programs, and opinions on thought provoking books.
Sheryl leaving YA makes me wonder about my own longevity as a YA librarian. How long will I last? And who’s going to be the next one to leave us? Why are all the branch managers adult services librarians? Can’t you be a YA Librarian and a branch manager? What does that say about YA librarianship? Moreover what does that say about our organization’s valuation of youth services? Are we only good for Summer Reading Programs and crafts?
Anyway, I’ll stop now because when you get me started on this topic, it’s hard to stop me. And for those of you who know me in person know that I can talk a mile a minute–which isn’t always a good thing especially when I start to become impassioned and nonsensical.
So in summation, I miss Sheryl. I don’t want to see more YA Librarians go the way of the adult… at least for now. Although if you feel it’s right for you, don’t let me stop you.

My life is freaking complicated these day. I have way too many things going on, some good, some stressful. Not so good for me. But if I were a character in a book, readers would be eagerly turning the pages wanting to know what happens next.
I'm reading this great book right now, The Blood of Flowers. It's about a teenage girl in 17th century Iran, who falls on hard times after her father dies and who also learns to design and make exquisite carpets. I stayed up waaaaay too late last night so I could read more. Part of it was because I liked the character and bad things kept happening to her and I didn't want to put the book down until they started working out for her.
So last night, in the section I read:
- She refuses to renew her three-month marriage contract to a rich man who doesn't love her (I love learning something, so I sure hope this fact about 17th century Iran is correct).
- She makes a beautiful carpet and plans to sell it for enough to live on, but instead the buyer steals it
- She and her mother are kicked out of the house and forced to move in with a very poor friend and share a single room with six people
- They try to make money selling potions her mother concocts
- But her mother falls ill
- Everyone begins to starve and no money is coming in
- She can only make money by begging
- But a blind beggar lies and says she is begging to get money for opium, so no one will give her any money
- Her mother is near death
- The only other way she could make money would be to prostitute herself to a fat, blood-covered butcher, and she is nearly desperate enough to
It hurts to hurt our characters. But sometimes we have to.

Ooh, I like Narrow Stairs. What are your favorite tracks?
Rock band 2 is going to feature Lush’s “Deluxe”! Yay! Here’s a link to their complete song listing

*sigh* I’m itching to play those songs, but I don’t own a playstation. Hey maybe we can convince our consortium to buy it and have a rock band librarian night! What do you think? Then if we get really good we could compete in the Dave and Busters rock band competition.
I like tracks 7-9: Grapvine Fires, Your New Twin Sized Bed, Long Division. All in all this album is cohesive and easy to listen to.
