Populist angst and anger is running through the United States presidential campaign, but also through the Brexit debates, directed at the political establishment, and also at globalization (with the European Union standing in for the latter in the UK context). This anger has taken policy elites by surprise, throwing wrenches into the works of carefully planned political campaigns by mainstream Republican, Democratic, Conservative, and Labour parties on either side of the Atlantic.

I'm sitting in a pool of light outside the library. It's dark all around me. Today, when I closed The Kite Runner (I'd been saving it) on the plane, it hit me: will I really be able to pull this off? Will I really be able to talk to 16 groups of kids and keep it fresh?
I'm sure tomorrow I'll feel like I did at my very first reading. It was at Powells, and as I walked to the podium, all I could think was, "I am going to faint. I am going to faint right now and my husband is going to have to drag me off." There wasn't any air in the room.
But after those first few horrible panicky seconds, it went fine.
