Natsuki Takaya’s Fruits Basket was one of the greatest hits of the First Manga Era, with the English editions from TokyoPop one of the best selling manga of the time. The original was published from 1998 to 2006 in Japan and was turned into a successful anime as well. While ToykoPop's manga have been OP for five years, Yen Press knows a good thing when they see it and they're bringing back Fruits Basket in fully updated collector’s editions AND publishing more from Takaya’s list including her classic Twinkle Stars and her new Liselotte & Witch’s Forest.

Generally speaking, when a manga artist has a successful title in the states, they usually are marked as a near constant for the rest of their manga drawing time. You know the deal, like Rumiko Takahashi, Akira Toriyama, Takeshi Obata, etc. Basically, they had a strong title, it sold well, and you can guarantee that […]

“2) Maybe Natsuki Takaya herself has requested her works not to be published in the US. ” One of her works before FB was published, also by TokyoPop, and I honestly didn’t think it was that good and suspect that’s the reason why none of her other work has. I’ve tried some of Liselotte but it didn’t grab me and I think the other American companies have just realized that even putting “by the author of Fruits Basket!” on the cover won’t make those stories sell enough to be worth licensing these days.
Tsubasa: Those With Wings? Well of course it was bad, it was made in 1995 lol
Well, I was told on Twitter it might be because both her works are depressing. I can somewhat buy that, mostly because shoujo can be a hard sell anyways, especially if it’s different…*thinks about Limit, shudders*
Don’t publishers base their license decisions on what’s popular in Japan? Have Takaya’s titles after Fruits Basket done well enough to please the Japanese public?
Hmm…good point! But I don’t know if I’ll be able to find numbers since Hoshi ended in 11 volumes, and Liselotte went on hiatus because Takaya was sick.
(Well I could look, but come on now lol)
The “being different and depressing” in a genre where readers seem to want feelgood romance, could definitely be a part of it. But I subscribe to Occam’s razor, so the most obvious question to ask is: “Do any of her works have anime adaptions?” That seems to be the biggest qualifier among publishers right now. Personally, I’d rather read more unique fare that doesn’t have an adaptation, but I’m wierd like that.
Hey! That shouldn’t be used for someone who hit it big in America!…Probably!
Also, stop being so “wierd” like that
