What is the hardest part of your job? What is the most rewarding?

One of the greatest challenges of being in command is, paradoxically, not to command. When I see that one of my pilots has guided themselves to exceed any prior definitions of personal excellence, then I know I have achieved what I set out to do.

When not working, how do you spend your time?

My top priorities are my husband and my child.

If money was no object and you had 3 weeks of vacation what would you do with your time?

My husband likes to fish. I would take him to the best trout stream on the planet, which may well be the one that runs through his parents’ Montana ranch. I would be sure to bring a good book. Perhaps several…he does enjoy his fishing.

She inched away on her chair and reached for the first thing on the top of the stack ignoring his statement about simply being a client. He knew as well as she did that clients didn’t kiss each other. “Let’s see what we’re dealing with. Why don’t you read out loud?” She’d struggled to find appropriate reading material. An obvious children’s book would’ve been humiliating, but the newspaper may have been too hard. Finally, she’d found a sample paragraph from a literacy website. It was on a fourth grade reading level, but with adult subject matter.

He tensed in the chair beside hers, but gamely pulled the paper closer and started to read. She was relieved to hear he read it fine. He’d never be an orator or college professor, but his reading was perfectly adequate. He’d skipped a few words here and there, but as they hadn’t changed the meaning of the text, she didn’t think it was a big deal.

She showed him how to take a blank piece of paper or an index card and cover the rest of the text so only the line he was reading was visible. She’d read it helped visually, and it seemed to. By the last sentence, he hadn’t missed any words.

“Hey, that’s a good trick,” he said, looking up from the paper and smiling at her. She grinned back, loving the elation soaring within at helping a student. It was a rush she’d rarely felt in her PR job.

“I’m glad that works for you. I’ve also heard that getting an e-reader is easier for some people, because you can make the text really big,” she said.

He looked thoughtful. “I’ll have to try that. Maybe I’ll even read a book.”

She looked at him a long minute before she realized he’d been joking.

“I do read books,” he said quietly. “Did you think I was such an idiot, I couldn’t even do that?”

“No, I never assumed anything,” she said, placing a conciliatory hand on his arm. “You told me you struggled as a student, so I had no idea what you did or didn’t do.”

“I like action books,” he said. “Clive Cussler, that kind of stuff.”

“My dad loves those also.” They sat in smiling accord for a long minute before she realized she was stroking his muscular forearm, and it felt way too good to be touching him. She moved her hand back to her own space. “Let’s move on to writing,” she said. “That’s what has you the most worried for the application process, right?”

“Yeah. I can think of everything I want to say in my head, but then when I go to write it, it comes out differently on paper. I can’t explain it, but I guess that’s the definition of dysgraphia.”

“I think I understand. Let’s try writing a paragraph on why you became a firefighter. Is that an easy question for you to answer?”

He picked up a pen and applied it to the notebook paper she’d left out for this purpose. After five minutes, he slid the sheet over to her. She read it, and then read it again.

“You look worried,” he said.

She looked up from the paper with five sentences punctuated by grammar errors and no compound sentences. “I’m not worried. I’m thinking.”

He scowled. “Shit. I knew it. We shouldn’t have started this. It’s a waste of time. Now you think I’m a stupid idiot.”

She leaned in toward him. “You are not a stupid idiot.”

He lowered his head a fraction. “I’m stupid for doing this.” He closed the distance between them.

Meet Shelli Stevens:

What makes the perfect book hero?

I think this can vary for every reader. For me, I love writing a hero who can have strong alpha tendencies, but whose weakness can be the heroine. Some humor. Maybe a bit tortured.

When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?

I’m a pantser. Which means when I write a book it’s a little bit like a Connect the Dots puzzle. I have ideas along the way but anything goes between. I never know how the story will completely unfold.

When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing books in middle school. I was a huge reader, and with it came the instinct to write my own romances.

Meet Leah Breamel:

Was it easier to write your story knowing about the concept beforehand or was this a story you had already thought about writing?

I had been fiddling around with the characters in Feeding the Flames for a couple years now; I’d actually started writing their story 2 years ago but put it aside when my Carina Press editor contacted me to write The Grady Legacy series. So having some time to let them form in my head made them easier to write this time around.

What inspired you to write about these particular characters? What was the deciding factor in choosing their story for this Anthology?

Because I’d been thinking about these characters for so long and since both Quinn and Zac were firefighters, they were an obvious choice when Lexxie contacted me and said she was putting together a firefighter bundle. I suspect they telepathically contacted her when I met her in Kansas City last year.

What’s your favorite line from your story?

“Makin’ out with a woman is a lot more romantic in a bed than in the front seat of your truck, I promise.”

Give us the inside scoop on another author in the anthology. (Share a “secret” or funny story)

Lexxie Cooper, Shelli Stevens and I had breakfast together in New Orleans during the RT Booklovers’ convention to discuss the anthology but since Lexxie is from Australia, Shelli from the US, and I’m from Canada, we ended up discussing the different types of bacon each of our countries use. Now everytime I eat bacon I think of Shelli and Lexxie.

Would you consider doing this type of collaboration again?

Yes, it’s nice to have the support of a group of authors of a variety of experiences and finding out we have so much in common.

What’s up next for you?

I’m finishing up WRANGLING THE PAST, the final book in my contemporary western series THE GRADY LEGACY, and repackaging and release some formerly published short stories – CHERRY COTTAGE, FIRST NIGHT, and UNASHAMED. After that’s done, I’m getting back to writing the next book in my HAUBERK PROTECTION romantic suspense series. (So many stories to write, so little time!)

“Will was sitting in his classroom at school when his teacher, Miss Elyse, made the announcement.”

The Story

Will’s class is going on a field trip to a firehouse. Will is afraid of fire and firefighters. Firefighters are right up there with monsters, even though he knows firefighters are heroes who protect our stuff and us. Still, firefighters are “huge” plus “they run out of the smoke and fire swinging axes.” On the bus, Will still worries about the trip. His friend Tommy is all excited, ready for anything.

A fireman wearing a baseball cap and a t-shirt, not a mask and a giant coat, greet the kids. Will tries to convince himself the fireman is not scary, but this one is the Captain. The Captain tells the kids the firefighters train hard, and that the six firefighters at this firehouse are “First Responders.” Will sees that the firehouse is also the firefighter’s home while on duty. As he begins to relax, Will imagines himself as “Captain Will,” the firefighter with the biggest office. The firefighters also have some cool stuff, like a shiny fire pole and two Dalmatians. Who knew they could have pets?

Out of nowhere, a firefighter slides down the gold fire pole, in full firefighter gear. Captain Kirby said, “Did you know that a lot of kids are frightened of firefighters?” Will understands. The firefighter crawls toward the kids, as if saving them in a fire, making at least one jump back. When the mask finally comes off, Will decides the firefighter is not at all scary-looking. Before the kids climb back in their school bus, Will helps aim the fire hose, receives a Junior Firefighter Badge, and hops up onto the fire engine—in the driver’s seat!

Review

When I Grow Up I Want to be . . . a Firefighter stands up to its predecessors—be in the Army and be a Teacher. If anything, the series is getting better. Will is a believable character. He gradually lets down his guard as he learns more about firefighters. Will’s fear of the GIANT firefighter was shattered as the firefighter, who suddenly slides down the fire pole, and crawls toward the kids, scaring a few, turns out to be . . . a girl! Even the Captain, wearing a t-shirt and baseball cap, looked normal. Will shares many of his thoughts along the way, yet I am guessing one thought he doesn’t share is, “why was I scared to come here today?” It is evident in his posture and his face that he is finally having fun.

Packed with career details, I Want to be . . . a Firefighter brings the firefighter down to kid level, erasing any fear that can be induce when they wear their full gear. From the contents of the typical firehouse, to various emergency response vehicles, Will, and the reader, learns what it takes to be a firefighter and what the job entails. As a take-away, there is s Home Safety Check List and a sample Home Escape Plan in the back of the book.

April 11th is the release date for my ABC book. Published in France by Fleurus Editions, it's the first project where I had the challenge of drawing different types of vehicles, including bikes!
It's the story of Adrien, a firefighter who helps saving a farm and its animals during a thunderstorm.
Each double spread has a letter of the alphabet with three little vehicles and a full page illustrating the story. It's very nicely printed and the die-cut cover makes it even nicer.

The Mount Dora event series Authors in the Park continues with its Second Annual “Spring into Art” festival, Saturday, March 29 at Long and Scott’s Farm in Mount Dora, FL., event chairman Mark Miller announced today. The Authors in the Park group celebrates literacy while promoting local and independent authors from Lake County, Central Florida and beyond. (www.authorsinthepark.com)

The event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be the first time the group has held an event at Long and Scott’s Farm at 26216 County Road 448A, Mount Dora, Miller said.

“We are extremely excited, not only to be at Long and Scott’s, but because this year’s event will feature both authors and artists,” Miller said. “Long and Scott’s is known for Zellwood Sweet Corn and their fall corn maze as well as being a great supporter of their community.” (www.longandscottfarms.com)

Spring into Art will feature over twenty authors and artists. A wide variety of books will be for sale in all genres and ages, as well as exclusive artwork. Some of the paintings are slated to be sold for charity.

Firefighter Ted by Andrea Beaty and Pascal Lemaitre

When Ted woke up one morning, he smelled smoke.  He knew that he needed a firefighter!  Unable to find a firefighter anywhere in his room, he become one.  He did have to make his own fire extinguisher our of whipped cream and an air tube from the fish tank.  Firefighter Ted started the day by putting out a breakfast fire, much to his mother’s dismay.  He then rescued a kitten from the hot sidewalk.  This made him late to school.  Met at the door by the principal, Ted became alarmed that the principal was overheating, so he wrapped him in hazard tape and used his fire extinguisher on him.  When the class went to the science fair, Ted had to leap into action again to make it all safe.  In the end, there was a real fire and you know who came to the rescue!

This second Ted book follows Doctor Ted.  Done with the same humor and spunk as the first, readers will be very happy to have a second adventure that hints at a third.  Ted is a great character who takes imaginative play to an entirely different level.  He combines ingenuity with courage, never paying attention to what others have to say about his costumes or what he does to help.  The illustrations are done with thick black lines and bright colors.  They are inviting, fun and fresh.

Recommended for all public libraries, this series will fly off of the shelves.  It will also make a welcome addition to fire safety story times and units.  Appropriate for toddlers through preschoolers, this series will be enjoyed by ages 2-5.

The back to school time always reminds me of my master's thesis of preschool emotions and the first day of school. I researched this topic and complied a list of 100 books for parents and teachers to explore with preschool age children to prepare them for the first day of school.

This book will clearly be enjoyed by the younger audience in a guessing game of different animals. However, it would be equally enjoyable to a third or fourth grade audience. Each page shows a different picture of part of an animal. At the end the child is left to discover that the animal is a reinde-piggy-porcu-croco-touca-flami-roos-dalama-chameleo-bat-frog. But...(there is still a surprise). You can call me gorgeous. This books puts all the parts of the animals together to create a new animal.

The book is beautifully illustrated and lends itself to a drawing activity that allows students to create an imaginary animal.
