1. Guest Post and Giveaway: Hot Point by M L Buchman

This morning I have a character profile and a giveaway for for Pure Heat as ML Buchman celebrates the release of Hot Point!

Mount Hood Aviation Profile

Full Name: Emily Beale

Occupation: lead pilot Mount Hood Aviation

Height: 5’10”

Hair Color: straight blond

Eye Color: blue

Age: 34

Originally from: Washington D.C.

Describe yourself in 100 words or less:

West Point graduate, age 20. The Screaming Eagles of 101st Airborne, 5 years. Captain, then major, SOAR—the Night Stalkers of the Special Operations Aviation Regiment. Retired honorably from military service on account of unplanned pregnancy with my husband. Lead Firehawk pilot Mount Hood Aviation firefighting since that time. What else do you want to know?

What is the hardest part of your job? What is the most rewarding?

One of the greatest challenges of being in command is, paradoxically, not to command. When I see that one of my pilots has guided themselves to exceed any prior definitions of personal excellence, then I know I have achieved what I set out to do.

When not working, how do you spend your time?

My top priorities are my husband and my child.

If money was no object and you had 3 weeks of vacation what would you do with your time?

My husband likes to fish. I would take him to the best trout stream on the planet, which may well be the one that runs through his parents’ Montana ranch. I would be sure to bring a good book. Perhaps several…he does enjoy his fishing.

Title: Hot Point

Author: M.L. Buchman

Series: Firehawks, #3

Pubdate: August 4th, 2015

ISBN: 9781402286940

Pulled apart by past mistakes. Driven by a passion neither could deny.

FROM WILDFIRE TO GUNFIRE

Master mechanic Denise Conroy—with a reputation for being as steel-clad as the aircraft she keeps aloft—shuns useless flyboys who don’t know one end of a wrench from the other.

Firehawk pilot Vern Taylor—known for unstoppable charm and a complete lack of mechanical skills—proves his talent for out-of-the-box thinking with every flight. He’s a survivor and a natural-born heli-aviation firefighter.

When Denise and Vern crash together in the Central American jungle with wildfire on one side and a full-fledged military coup on the other, their newly forged partnership is tested to the max. They have each other, but not even their formidable skills combined can protect Denise and Vern from the conflagration sweeping the jungle…and their hearts.

M. L. Buchman has over 35 novels and an ever-expanding flock of short stories in print. His military romantic suspense books have been named Barnes & Noble and NPR “Top 5 of the year,” Booklist “Top 10 of the Year,” and RT “Top 10 Romantic Suspense of the Year.” In addition to romantic suspense, he also writes contemporaries, thrillers, and fantasy and science fiction.

In among his career as a corporate project manager he has: rebuilt and single-handed a fifty-foot sailboat, both flown and jumped out of airplanes, designed and built two houses, and bicycled solo around the world.

He is now a full-time writer, living on the Oregon Coast with his beloved wife. He is constantly amazed at what you can do with a degree in Geophysics. You may keep up with his writing at www.mlbuchman.com.

About Hot Nights with the Fireman

Everyone in Washington, DC, knows that when the heat is on, you call Valerie Wainright. This brilliant, brassy PR maven can spin any hot scandal, and she’s never let a client ruffle her feathers. Yet when she agrees to teach DC’s bravest how to handle a media frenzy, she faces an entirely different kind of fire. Keeping things all business and no pleasure is far harder than she expected.
After steamy photos ignite the Internet, firefighter Jason Moore instantly goes from hero to bad boy. While he couldn’t care less about an online rep, he cares a lot about his job and saving lives. If Valerie can help clear his name, he’ll do what she says-even if it means forcing himself to keep his hands off her. But beneath Valerie’s cool cover, Jason feels a smoldering desire that lights his own. And this is one inferno he’ll definitely want to stoke . .

Excerpt:

She inched away on her chair and reached for the first thing on the top of the stack ignoring his statement about simply being a client. He knew as well as she did that clients didn’t kiss each other. “Let’s see what we’re dealing with. Why don’t you read out loud?” She’d struggled to find appropriate reading material. An obvious children’s book would’ve been humiliating, but the newspaper may have been too hard. Finally, she’d found a sample paragraph from a literacy website. It was on a fourth grade reading level, but with adult subject matter.

He tensed in the chair beside hers, but gamely pulled the paper closer and started to read. She was relieved to hear he read it fine. He’d never be an orator or college professor, but his reading was perfectly adequate. He’d skipped a few words here and there, but as they hadn’t changed the meaning of the text, she didn’t think it was a big deal.

She showed him how to take a blank piece of paper or an index card and cover the rest of the text so only the line he was reading was visible. She’d read it helped visually, and it seemed to. By the last sentence, he hadn’t missed any words.

“Hey, that’s a good trick,” he said, looking up from the paper and smiling at her. She grinned back, loving the elation soaring within at helping a student. It was a rush she’d rarely felt in her PR job.

“I’m glad that works for you. I’ve also heard that getting an e-reader is easier for some people, because you can make the text really big,” she said.

He looked thoughtful. “I’ll have to try that. Maybe I’ll even read a book.”

She looked at him a long minute before she realized he’d been joking.

“I do read books,” he said quietly. “Did you think I was such an idiot, I couldn’t even do that?”

“No, I never assumed anything,” she said, placing a conciliatory hand on his arm. “You told me you struggled as a student, so I had no idea what you did or didn’t do.”

“I like action books,” he said. “Clive Cussler, that kind of stuff.”

“My dad loves those also.” They sat in smiling accord for a long minute before she realized she was stroking his muscular forearm, and it felt way too good to be touching him. She moved her hand back to her own space. “Let’s move on to writing,” she said. “That’s what has you the most worried for the application process, right?”

“Yeah. I can think of everything I want to say in my head, but then when I go to write it, it comes out differently on paper. I can’t explain it, but I guess that’s the definition of dysgraphia.”

“I think I understand. Let’s try writing a paragraph on why you became a firefighter. Is that an easy question for you to answer?”

He picked up a pen and applied it to the notebook paper she’d left out for this purpose. After five minutes, he slid the sheet over to her. She read it, and then read it again.

“You look worried,” he said.

She looked up from the paper with five sentences punctuated by grammar errors and no compound sentences. “I’m not worried. I’m thinking.”

He scowled. “Shit. I knew it. We shouldn’t have started this. It’s a waste of time. Now you think I’m a stupid idiot.”

She leaned in toward him. “You are not a stupid idiot.”

He lowered his head a fraction. “I’m stupid for doing this.” He closed the distance between them.

About Lexxie Couper

Lexxie Couper started writing when she was six and hasn’t stopped since. She’s not a deviant, but she does have a deviant’s imagination and a desire to entertain readers with her words. Add the two together and you get erotic romances that can make you laugh, cry, shake with fear or tremble with desire. Sometimes all at once.

When she’s not submerged in the worlds she creates, Lexxie’s life revolves around her family, a husband who thinks she’s insane, a indoor cat who likes to stalk shadows, and her daughters, who both utterly captured her heart and changed her life forever.

Having no idea how old she really is, Lexxie decided to go with 27 and has been that age for quite some time now. It’s the best of both worlds – old enough to act mature, young enough to be silly.

Lexxie lives by two simple rules – measure your success not by how much money you have, but by how often you laugh, and always try everything at least once. As a consequence, she’s laughed her way through many an eyebrow raising adventure.

Meet Shelli Stevens:

What makes the perfect book hero?

I think this can vary for every reader. For me, I love writing a hero who can have strong alpha tendencies, but whose weakness can be the heroine. Some humor. Maybe a bit tortured.

When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?

I’m a pantser. Which means when I write a book it’s a little bit like a Connect the Dots puzzle. I have ideas along the way but anything goes between. I never know how the story will completely unfold.

When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing books in middle school. I was a huge reader, and with it came the instinct to write my own romances.

Meet Leah Breamel:

Was it easier to write your story knowing about the concept beforehand or was this a story you had already thought about writing?

I had been fiddling around with the characters in Feeding the Flames for a couple years now; I’d actually started writing their story 2 years ago but put it aside when my Carina Press editor contacted me to write The Grady Legacy series. So having some time to let them form in my head made them easier to write this time around.

What inspired you to write about these particular characters? What was the deciding factor in choosing their story for this Anthology?

Because I’d been thinking about these characters for so long and since both Quinn and Zac were firefighters, they were an obvious choice when Lexxie contacted me and said she was putting together a firefighter bundle. I suspect they telepathically contacted her when I met her in Kansas City last year. ;)

What’s your favorite line from your story?

“Makin’ out with a woman is a lot more romantic in a bed than in the front seat of your truck, I promise.”

Give us the inside scoop on another author in the anthology. (Share a “secret” or funny story)

Lexxie Cooper, Shelli Stevens and I had breakfast together in New Orleans during the RT Booklovers’ convention to discuss the anthology but since Lexxie is from Australia, Shelli from the US, and I’m from Canada, we ended up discussing the different types of bacon each of our countries use. Now everytime I eat bacon I think of Shelli and Lexxie.

Would you consider doing this type of collaboration again?

Yes, it’s nice to have the support of a group of authors of a variety of experiences and finding out we have so much in common.

What’s up next for you?

I’m finishing up WRANGLING THE PAST, the final book in my contemporary western series THE GRADY LEGACY, and repackaging and release some formerly published short stories – CHERRY COTTAGE, FIRST NIGHT, and UNASHAMED. After that’s done, I’m getting back to writing the next book in my HAUBERK PROTECTION romantic suspense series. (So many stories to write, so little time!)

5. Guest Post-ML Buchman, Author of Pure Heat

ML Buchman dropped by the virtual offices to share the contents of Carly’s PG bag.  Check it out!

CARLY’S PG BAG with M.L. Buchman

Wildland firefighters always have a PG bag with them, Personal Gear. If they’re a Hotshot they’ll have a chainsaw, a Pulaski (a specialized axe that half axe and half adze—a sharp hoe), and a PG bag. If they’re a smokejumper, they’ll have the same thing plus a parachute.

Carly Thomas doesn’t fight fire on the ground, she fights it from the air from the observer seat of a Firehawk helicopter. She is the top-rated Fire Behavior Analyst and her reputation reaches far and wide through the firefighting community. The Flame Witch—she knows more about what a fire is doing than the fire does—flies to kill the demon. Over the years fire has taken too much from her; it will never get another soul if she has anything to say about it. She is one driven woman as Steve Mercer a former smokejumper turned observation-drone pilot is going to find out when he faces Carly’s Pure Heat.

Her PG bag is like no other. Of course it has a foil shelter, though that didn’t save her fiancé when he panicked. And she keeps a fire axe close at hand in case a falling tree again traps and threatens to kill someone as it did her father. The normal food and water are just like everyone else’s.

But Carly carries several unique things:

A heavily highlighted and thumbed copy of the “Wildland Fire Incident Management Field Guide.”

A packet of “Wildland Fire Risk and Complexity Assessment” forms.

A photo of Ham Thomas, her dad, a lead smokejumper for over twenty years. The man she has spent her life trying to honor with her actions, even at the cost of her own heart.

A tablet computer that displays the infrared data information from Steve Mercer’s high-flying high-spying drone. He can spot fire by its heat signature, though he can’t see the fire he’s rekindling in a heart she long thought dead.

A picture of Steve Mercer at a quiet moment between fires, leaning back against his classic, flame-painted Firebird Trans Am, grinning that smile that he thought was oh-so-charming, and actually turned out to be just that.

Thanks, Matt!

Pure Heat received STARRED reviews from Publishers Weekly and Booklist!

These heli-aviation firefighters battle more than flames.

The elite fire experts of Mount Hood Aviation fly into places even the CIA can’t penetrate.

She lives to fight fires

Carly Thomas could read burn patterns before she knew the alphabet. A third-generation forest fire specialist who lost both her father and her fiancé to the flames, she’s learned to live life like she fights fires: with emotions shut down.

But he’s lit an inferno she can’t quench

Former smokejumper Steve “Merks” Mercer can no longer fight fires up close and personal, but he can still use his intimate knowledge of wildland burns as a spotter and drone specialist. Assigned to copilot a Firehawk with Carly, they take to the skies to battle the worst wildfire in decades and discover a terrorist threat hidden deep in the Oregon wilderness–but it’s the heat between them that really sizzles.

Praise for Wait Until Dark: “High-energy military suspense at its best…this book has it all.”–RT Book Reviews, 4 stars

About the author

M.L. Buchman’s romances have been named in Booklist’s Top 10 of the year and NPR’s Top 5 of the year. He has also published science fiction and fantasy under the name Matthew Lieber Buchman. He is happiest, no matter how cliché it may seem, when walking on the beach holding hands with the mother of his awesome kid… or when he’s writing. In addition to his career as a corporate project manager, he has rebuilt and single-handed a fifty-foot sailboat, both flown and jumped out of airplanes, designed and built two houses, and bicycled solo around the world. When I Grow Up I Want To Be…a Firefighter!

by WIGU Publishing

978-1-939973-11-5

2014

Age 6 to 10       60 pages

.IN PROCESS OF ADDING ILLUSTRATIONS

“Will was excited to go on his class field trip, until he learned they would be touring the local firehouse. Now, he is dreading the trip. For as long as he can remember, Will has been afraid of fire and, worse than that, firefighters! Though he knows firefighters are heroes who do dangerous work, to him they are giants in heavy coats and masks. Can Will overcome his fears and maybe even learn something surprising about himself?”

Opening

“Will was sitting in his classroom at school when his teacher, Miss Elyse, made the announcement.”

The Story

Will’s class is going on a field trip to a firehouse. Will is afraid of fire and firefighters. Firefighters are right up there with monsters, even though he knows firefighters are heroes who protect our stuff and us. Still, firefighters are “huge” plus “they run out of the smoke and fire swinging axes.” On the bus, Will still worries about the trip. His friend Tommy is all excited, ready for anything.

A fireman wearing a baseball cap and a t-shirt, not a mask and a giant coat, greet the kids. Will tries to convince himself the fireman is not scary, but this one is the Captain. The Captain tells the kids the firefighters train hard, and that the six firefighters at this firehouse are “First Responders.” Will sees that the firehouse is also the firefighter’s home while on duty. As he begins to relax, Will imagines himself as “Captain Will,” the firefighter with the biggest office. The firefighters also have some cool stuff, like a shiny fire pole and two Dalmatians. Who knew they could have pets?

Out of nowhere, a firefighter slides down the gold fire pole, in full firefighter gear. Captain Kirby said, “Did you know that a lot of kids are frightened of firefighters?” Will understands. The firefighter crawls toward the kids, as if saving them in a fire, making at least one jump back. When the mask finally comes off, Will decides the firefighter is not at all scary-looking. Before the kids climb back in their school bus, Will helps aim the fire hose, receives a Junior Firefighter Badge, and hops up onto the fire engine—in the driver’s seat!

Review

When I Grow Up I Want to be . . . a Firefighter stands up to its predecessors—be in the Army and be a Teacher. If anything, the series is getting better. Will is a believable character. He gradually lets down his guard as he learns more about firefighters. Will’s fear of the GIANT firefighter was shattered as the firefighter, who suddenly slides down the fire pole, and crawls toward the kids, scaring a few, turns out to be . . . a girl! Even the Captain, wearing a t-shirt and baseball cap, looked normal. Will shares many of his thoughts along the way, yet I am guessing one thought he doesn’t share is, “why was I scared to come here today?” It is evident in his posture and his face that he is finally having fun.

Packed with career details, I Want to be . . . a Firefighter brings the firefighter down to kid level, erasing any fear that can be induce when they wear their full gear. From the contents of the typical firehouse, to various emergency response vehicles, Will, and the reader, learns what it takes to be a firefighter and what the job entails. As a take-away, there is s Home Safety Check List and a sample Home Escape Plan in the back of the book.

7. ABC

April 11th is the release date for my ABC book. Published in France by Fleurus Editions, it's the first project where I had the challenge of drawing different types of vehicles, including bikes!
It's the story of Adrien, a firefighter who helps saving a farm and its animals during a thunderstorm.
Each double spread has a letter of the alphabet with three little vehicles and a full page illustrating the story. It's very nicely printed and the die-cut cover makes it even nicer.

You can see more images from the book under Featured Project ---> Mon Alphabet des Véhicules

8. Spring Into Art 2014

Here is the official press release for the upcoming event. (That guy, Mark Miller, sure talks a lot, sheesh...)

The Mount Dora event series Authors in the Park continues with its Second Annual “Spring into Art” festival, Saturday, March 29 at Long and Scott’s Farm in Mount Dora, FL., event chairman Mark Miller announced today. The Authors in the Park group celebrates literacy while promoting local and independent authors from Lake County, Central Florida and beyond. (www.authorsinthepark.com)

The event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be the first time the group has held an event at Long and Scott’s Farm at 26216 County Road 448A, Mount Dora, Miller said.

“We are extremely excited, not only to be at Long and Scott’s, but because this year’s event will feature both authors and artists,” Miller said. “Long and Scott’s is known for Zellwood Sweet Corn and their fall corn maze as well as being a great supporter of their community.” (www.longandscottfarms.com)

Spring into Art will feature over twenty authors and artists. A wide variety of books will be for sale in all genres and ages, as well as exclusive artwork. Some of the paintings are slated to be sold for charity.

In addition to great books and art, representatives for Team Jay will be on hand, Miller, an author himself, said. Team Jay is a project of the Lake County Firefighters Charity to benefit young Jay, the son of a firefighter currently battling Leukemia. (www.lakefirefightercharity.org)

The outdoor event is free to attend, Miller pointed out. Authors and artists alike will be available to discuss their writing, sign autographs and enjoy a day on the farm. Some author proceeds will be donated to Team Jay and other worthy organizations, he said. Scott’s Country Café will be open for lunch.

Visit www.Facebook.com/AuthorsInThePark for details on participating authors, artists and event updates. Join the FB event here: www.facebook.com/events/622986207772066

9. Guest Post: Dawn Colclasure Escapes

My guest today, Dawn Colclasure, shares her thoughts on writing poetry and how the author can escape into his/her own special world.

When it comes to writing poetry, one rule of fiction applies: There are several types of genres to choose from. You can write romantic poetry, horror poetry or fantasy poetry. Writing futuristic poetry is another option – even poets like to envision what kind of world we may one day live in.

And sometimes, it’s not even our world that we write about when we write poetry. It could be any kind of world at all, one of our own making that can exist in fantasy poetry. This is where the poet has the chance to “escape” to a world where we can only dream about certain things actually happening. A cure for a disease? It’s there. A magical potion to take the burn scars away? Find it in the mysterious cellar. Something to use against nightmare monsters compromising our ability to sleep? It’s just a wish away.

Writing fantasy poetry offers the poet another benefit: We have the chance to step into a world where we can be ourselves without criticism. If we always dreamed of traveling the world as a dancing magician, it can happen with fantasy poetry. Another benefit is that writing fantasy poetry allows the poet to be seen by others for who we are on the inside – someone who is big, brave and magical – and not how we are on the outside – scarred, broken or slow.

That’s one thing writing fantasy poetry does for me. With fantasy poetry, I can be beautiful and not scarred or I can hear instead of being deaf. And I can do anything with two good strong hands when I only have one hand that has all five fingers on it (the other hand has three). My poetry chapbook, Follow That Dream, may have poems about what it’s like to be in a hospital so much and teen angst, but it also has fantasy poetry where I got to be a maiden or a sea captain. Poetry brought those worlds to life. Fantasy poetry allows me to create the kind of world where the scarred and disabled are not so limited and completely accepted just as they are.

When the poet sits down to write, no matter what kind of poetry that will be written, it is a chance to create a world where anything is possible, even a cure. Even acceptance. It’s a world where magic happens, and that’s the greatest kind of world to escape to of all.

About the author: Dawn Colclasure is a writer who lives in Oregon. Her articles, essays, poems and short stories have appeared in several newspapers, anthologies, magazines and E-zines. She is the author of seven books, among them BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL: How We Survive as Writing Parents; 365 TIPS FOR WRITERS: Inspiration, Writing Prompts and Beat The Block Tips to Turbo Charge Your Creativity; Love is Like a Rainbow: Poems of Love and Devotion and the children’s book The Yellow Rose. She is co-author of the book Totally Scared: The Complete Book on Haunted Houses. Her Web site is at http://dmcwriter.tripod.com/.

About the book: Follow that dream. Take a few moments to read poems meant to seek refuge from the harsh realities of life, from pain, confusion and loneliness. Allow these poems to take you on a journey of wherever your imagination may lead you. The poems in this book share coming-of-age struggles and the fantasies created in order to offer a temporary escape from the real world.

I began writing in 2009 after I graduated from the Children’s Institute of Literature in 2009 that following December I put out my first picture book. From there I put out my first adult genre fiction the following year.
3) How did you choose the genre you write in?
I love fiction! I decided on a topic that interests me and begins to write.
4) Where do you get your ideas?
I got it from the fact my father was a firefighter.
5) Do you ever experience writer’s block? Do you work with an outline, or just write?
I have never experienced writer’s block. I don’t use outlines either. I just write as I go.
6) Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?
Yes, Ray Bradbury! I loved his writing. I also loved the fact that it took him awhile before he made it, this is something I could relate to.
7) Can you tell us about your upcoming book?
It is called ‘District One Stand By: On the Bleeding Edge of Change’ which is the second one in the series.
Catisha Spadoni gets a phone call in which she wasn’t expecting. It spirals from there knowing someone deliberately did this to her former crew. She decided to take the case, in the mist of it all her personal life began falling apart.
“District One, Lieutenant Catisha Spadoni, speaking.” I answered the phone as I tried hard to unbury the phone from the stack of papers I was trying to do for Jack, our beloved Captain.
“Catisha, you are the person I actually wanted to talk to.” the voice on the other end said. I recognized him as Rick Johnson, my former Chief and Fire Marshal that I worked with in New York City.
“Well you got me, so I guess it is time to ask why you are calling.” I chuckled.
“Obviously you haven’t watched the news or you would already know why I am calling.”
I glanced at the clock. “The national news doesn’t start until a couple minutes when the commercial stop. I already watched the local news. Why what’s going on?” I asked.
“Breaking News from New York City. A Firehouse exploded in the early hours today. The Firehouse, trucks, and equipment are also destroyed. The firefighters who were sleeping at the time were inside. All except three made it out alive. Three are still unaccounted for. The rest have been hospitalized for injuries from severe to minor.” the national news anchor began.

“Oh my God!” I screamed as they showed the firehouse that I lived in. That was my  former crew that was injured and also among the missing. Those were my  brothers and sisters in that barn.

8) Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
The only real parts of my book is the fact my father was a firefighter and I got to know these wonderful people. Everything else is fictional.
9) What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
I think each chapter has a different reason why it holds close to my heart. However I think Chapter 28 in ‘District One Stand By: On the Bleeding Edge of Change’ would be my favorite from the book. It is were ‘Angel’ a new character comes in.
10) What project are you working on now? Will you have a new book coming out soon?
Yes, I am working on ‘District One Stand By: Love Beyond the Flame’ which is the third in the series.
District One Stand By: On the Bleeding Edge of Change is coming out in less then 12 weeks.
11) Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?
I don’t know how to answer that. I have my favorite characters, but each of them have a reason why they do the things they do. I wish in book one I added Jimmy and Angel, two new characters.
The theme of Catisha’s life is what I go with.
12) Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?
Yes, NEVER give up!!! I got plenty of rejection letters in the beginning of my career and then I began rejecting contracts. Now I am happy with my publishing company! Even if you have to self publish get out there!!!
13) Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
Thank you for all of the support!!! I would also like to say part of the proceeds of this series go to the 9-11 Foundation and the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation, two very important Foundations to me. It may never take away the pain of loosing a love one on duty, but I would love to help in any way I can.

11. Firefighter Ted

Firefighter Ted by Andrea Beaty and Pascal Lemaitre

When Ted woke up one morning, he smelled smoke.  He knew that he needed a firefighter!  Unable to find a firefighter anywhere in his room, he become one.  He did have to make his own fire extinguisher our of whipped cream and an air tube from the fish tank.  Firefighter Ted started the day by putting out a breakfast fire, much to his mother’s dismay.  He then rescued a kitten from the hot sidewalk.  This made him late to school.  Met at the door by the principal, Ted became alarmed that the principal was overheating, so he wrapped him in hazard tape and used his fire extinguisher on him.  When the class went to the science fair, Ted had to leap into action again to make it all safe.  In the end, there was a real fire and you know who came to the rescue!

This second Ted book follows Doctor Ted.  Done with the same humor and spunk as the first, readers will be very happy to have a second adventure that hints at a third.  Ted is a great character who takes imaginative play to an entirely different level.  He combines ingenuity with courage, never paying attention to what others have to say about his costumes or what he does to help.  The illustrations are done with thick black lines and bright colors.  They are inviting, fun and fresh.

Recommended for all public libraries, this series will fly off of the shelves.  It will also make a welcome addition to fire safety story times and units.  Appropriate for toddlers through preschoolers, this series will be enjoyed by ages 2-5.

Reviewed from library copy.

12. Browsing at the Bookstore

The back to school time always reminds me of my master's thesis of preschool emotions and the first day of school. I researched this topic and complied a list of 100 books for parents and teachers to explore with preschool age children to prepare them for the first day of school.

I found three new titles for the Pre-k to Grade 1 classroom to start off the school year. These titles are Hello My Name is BOB, Hello My Name is JACK by Linas Alsenas, This is the Firefighter by Laura Godwin and Call Me Gorgeous by Giles and Alexandra Milton.

I picked up this book at first glance because of the Hello My Name is Bob sticker. (I hate when I get one of these stickers to wear). Suprisingly, I loved Bob the Brown Bear and is friend Jack the black and White Panda Bear. Why? Well, my childhood was spent playing with my brown bear named John who was friends with my sister's black and white bear named Frank. Bob is a bear who loves to sit. As he simply puts it, "Sitting's great, isn't it?. Jack is a bear who lives to do wild and crazy stuff. The go to each others favorite places even though they have totally different interests. They realize that even though they are different they can be great friends.
The pictures are cute and fun loving and just want you to pick up Bob and Jack. Especially cute is the picture of Jack with underpants on his head. A great book to start the school year and show young children how we don'thave to like the same things to be good friends.

Firefighters are always a big topic with young children. I have an all time favorite "Firetruck" song. It is song by Mr. Ivan Ulz. Check it out at -http://www.ivanulz.com
I have also had the honor of having working with him last year - http://missolibrary.blogspot.com/2009/02/ivan-ulz-performs-his-1-hit-firetruck.html. This book is great because it gives the feel of a typical New York City Firehouse. "This is the company Eighty Five Zero. This is the firefighter. This is the hero." This is great for Fire Safety week or just before a visit to the firehouse.

This book will clearly be enjoyed by the younger audience in a guessing game of different animals. However, it would be equally enjoyable to a third or fourth grade audience. Each page shows a different picture of part of an animal. At the end the child is left to discover that the animal is a reinde-piggy-porcu-croco-touca-flami-roos-dalama-chameleo-bat-frog. But...(there is still a surprise). You can call me gorgeous. This books puts all the parts of the animals together to create a new animal.

The book is beautifully illustrated and lends itself to a drawing activity that allows students to create an imaginary animal.

13. Melbourne Bush Fires, 2009 February - Tribute to the Rescuers and Fire-Fighters - The Journey - Ron Chironna and Jr.R.Poulter

Ron ’s amazing picture inspired the poem, “The Journey” which both celebrates the role of the rescuers and the fire-fighters, and highlights the traumatic events they were dealing with moment by moment. The courage and dedication of such unsung heroes is what it means to be ‘my brother’s keeper’! I am so grateful there are people around like this - inspiring wonderful role models for our children in a world which seems to be increasingly full of hatred and violence and selfishness - TO THEM!!!
