Before I let you know what’s cooking, I’d like to wish you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
I’m happy to announce that I’ve done something I’ve always wanted to do and some of my fans have asked me to and that is to publish a boxset of the Billy and Monster books.
Included in this boxset are the first five books in the Billy and Monster series. They are:

Billy and Monster: The Superhero with Fart Powers
Billy and the Monster who Ate All the Easter Eggs

Over the weekend, I posted the cover you see to the right on my Facebook page and asked family, friends, authors and fans to let me know what they think. One recurring theme was that the grey color was a bit dull so I’ve asked my designer to change it to a brick red and I know that is really going to stand out. If you have any thoughts, I’d be interested to hear them.
I have to admit that the driving force behind me doing this boxset was because I wanted to covert it to an audiobook. I use a company called acx.com (an affiliate of Amazon) to do my audiobooks and will be working with a professional voice-over artist over the next month to give Billy and Monster a voice. Can’t wait to share that with you.

Spring arrived a few weeks early here in my little corner of the world when I found
God Bless Our Easter by
Hannah C. Hall.
And no, Hannah is no relation to Cathy C. Hall. But I’d love to share a cup of tea and talk writing with her. Too bad Hannah’s all the way in Arkansas! Thankfully, her lovely book is here on my doorstep, so let’s take a look.
In
God Bless Our Easter, the most adorable baby animals
ever playfully romp through a spring day. The rhyming text tells of their discovery of God’s blessings in rain puddles and shady naps, in sunny daffodils and soaring butterflies.
God Bless Our Easter is the perfect book for a toddler’s springtime basket, though it’s sure to find a place in your child’s heart through
all the seasons.
And thanks to the blessing of email, I did have a chance to chat with Hannah and ask her a few questions.
When did you begin your writing journey?My mom predicted when I was a very little girl that I was going to grow up to be an author. I was always, always reading. I didn't get serious about writing, however, until college. When a professor I both respected and was terrified of told me I should to switch my minor to Journalism, I did as I was told! I wrote for my college newspaper and then transitioned into freelance writing for a few small magazines after graduation.When I started having children, my mom again encouraged me that I should write for kids. Having never taken a creative writing course, I didn't think I had the imagination to do it. However, as my kids and their imaginations grew, I found my inspiration.My "official" writing journey began after I pitched my first manuscript for a picture book at a conference. Though that particular story has yet to be published, I met an editor at a meeting there that resulted in the God Bless series, of which I'm now in the process of writing the fourth book. Moral of the story: go to conferences and listen to your elders! What’s your writing process?My process is certainly not very technical or structured. I'm a stay-at-home mom, so I do a lot of writing in my head while I fold clothes or wash dishes. I always keep a pad of paper and an ink pen by my side or in my purse. There is something about gliding a good ink pen over nice paper that inspires my creativity in a way a computer screen never can.Since I write a weekly blog, I am always thinking on that as well. What am I learning in the day-to-day from my children or about parenting or marriage that might be useful to someone else? I would hate to have these experiences (good and bad) and someone not get something out of it. I want to be real with people, and I really want them to learn from my (many) mistakes!
How did you find your agent?I queried many agents, and I'm not sure I got even so much as a rejection letter from any of them. They simply never responded. It was very disheartening. I stumbled on to the amazing Sally Apokedak while checking out a conference that she happened to be speaking at. (Conferences, again!) She responded to my query very quickly, and I appreciated that so much. She is a writer herself, so she respects writers and the time (and nerve) it takes to send out queries. She is down-to-earth, truthful, and truly a blessing to me. A big thank you to Hannah Hall for sharing her blessings with us here at the Muffin!

I'm approaching today's post on Easter books like a wedding tradition - with something old, something new, something borrowed, and something out-of-the-blue.
The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes
by Dubose Heyward, illustrated by Marjorie Flack
A little girl bunny defies the odds to become an Easter Bunny, even though she isn't high-born or well, male. Her good upbringing, hard work, and perseverance take her beyond what others think a country bunny can do. You go, girl! I loved this book as a child, and it was one of very few books about Easter at the time. Of course, this was before every cartoon book and TV character got their own holiday story. Does this older tale still win over the young readers? With a wink, I have to say that it doesn't really matter. We parents have to reserve the right to share a few books just because they spoke to us as children, and I'll put this one top of my list for its great story, lovely illustrations, and classic classicness.
The Easter Egg
by Jan Brett
Seriously, I have to wonder what took Jan Brett so long to tackle an Easter story because this is a natural subject for her amazing artwork. Look at the possibilities in decorated eggs! And so she did, with this new book where a bunny finds that his real talent isn't in egg-decorating, but in something else altogether. It's a sweet story, and of course beautifully illustrated. If you like some behind-the-scenes, check out the short video where Jan Brett talks about her process - while holding a chicken. She also has a coloring pages and more fun at her website.
Junie B. First Grader: Dumb Bunny

I'm still not feeling that great as I recover from a cold, but the show must go on. Well, at least at Booklights where I am sharing Easter books in a tradition generally associated with weddings. Namely, something old, something new, something borrowed, and something out-of-the-blue. Head over and give your favorite Easter books in the comments. Oh, and I share a bonus passage that should the Passover observers among us smile.
I had a hard time finding good Easter books, seeing that the majority of them seem to be the holiday experiences of Dora, SpongeBob, Clifford, Curious George, Fancy Nancy, Elmo, Mickey Mouse, and Strawberry Shortcake. Blecch. As I browsed Amazon, I also couldn't find a religious story that stood out as the go-to book on Easter.
Now at Christmas, I find the standard book/TV character holiday contingent along with a ton of good semi-secular stories that focus on Santa, trees, or gift-giving. But there are also many titles that focus on the birth of Christ, and do so in a way that make them good picture books, as well as religious books. I'm not seeing that with Easter books, and I've decided that from a step-back, story-telling, kidlit-reader perspective that Christmas has upper hand. I mean, there's a baby, animals, and presents which sounds a lot easier to make into a children's story than crucifixion and resurrection.
Come to think of it, there's the same problem for Passover books with the whole killing of the first-born child thing going on. Tough holidays to fictionalize. I guess. What do you think?
LURV The Country Bunny. It was a year round read when my children were small. What's the line about the Easter bunnies not making fun if the country bunny because they were " wise and kind and knew better"? Every home should have a copy. Way ahead of it's time. (Published in the late thirties, right?)

I love the Country Bunny! My mom used to shake her head at me in Kindergarten because every time my class went to the library I would check out that book... over and over and over again. I think the illustrations are beautiful.
What's really interesting though, is how feminist the Country Bunny was for it's time period. I wrote a whole critical paper on feminism in the book. It makes me wonder if women's rights were subconsciously wormed into my head from this book, to make me who I am today... So if you want a strong independent daughter, I'd recommend the Country Bunny :)
