One of the places we regularly visit has a tree that houses gnomes: Lucia knocks on the door every time we go by, but alas, we always come by on market day, and the gnomes are never home: We have a pine tree in our back yard that would be a perfect residence for gnomes. We've sent out the word. The housing market is difficult right now, and so far, there have been no inquiries about the

Last night, we had some family and friends over for dinner. At one point, Lucia took her napkin and dipped it into my brother's girlfriend's wine. I was shocked. "That was mean and rude, "I said. "Why did you do it?" Lucia replied, "I was being Veronica wiping the face of Jesus." "Oh," I said. "I'm glad you weren't being mean-- you were just being... interesting." I asked her apologize to my

Jump on over to whimsybooks to read her post. Come on. Everybody play!
I hand wrote thank you notes to Sharon Draper and Joan Bauer. As they are enormously successful, I don't expect they needed the boost, but they are two authors who hooked me on YA literature. There were others, and I may write more letters. I've already commented on Laurie Halse Andersons page about her incredible books, and how my students devour them. I may send a note to Joyce Sweeney, except I see her twice a year, and it's much more fun to praise her work in person. Same with Alex Flinn, Dorian Cirrone, Edward Bloor, Gaby Triana, and Laurie Friedman. Amazing Florida writers, all of them. I probably shouldn't have started listing names, because I'm sure I left someone off. I should go browse my bookshelf. Oh my gosh, I could go on and on. But I can't write them all thank you notes. See? That's why you have to play, too! We have to spread the joy! Have fun.
Such wonder should exist everywhere.
That is pure sweetness.
When Frances was little, I used to write tiny little notes to her from Miranda the Fairy. Sometimes they would appear next to her pillow and sometimes she would find them while exploring our garden. Perhaps Lucia would love the idea of tiny notes from a gnome -
e.g.
Dear Lucia,
I have come to live in your garden for a while. I am very shy but I will watch over your garden and I will be peeping at you when you come out to play. Be a good girl.
With love,
Norman the Gnome
YP: Sweet! May I use it? I'd also like it if Miranda the Fairy came to visit too.
HWM and TadMack: Totally!
So sweet!
We have only the naughty tangle faeries that must come and dance in the baby's hair each night. And the ubiquitous tooth and holiday sorts of creatures. We should find more...although I generally take a hard line about keeping the house fey-free. They are so unpredictable.
LSM: Lucia's teacher told me about how one of her colleagues was talking about climing Mt. Rainier with ice-picks and laughing about how the wind fairies tried to knock her off the mountain. Her partner, who was listening in on the conversation, muttered, "You try a stunt like that again and I'LL knock you off the mountain."
The wind-fairies are a mite mischievous. (And fear not, YP, I know how to pronounce "mischievous" correctly.)
That is adorable! I want such a red door.
I'm tagging you for a meme today.
Hope you get some tenants!
Just make sure that the gnomes don't remortgage the property and get in over their heads with an adjutable rate mortgage. They're notorious for that, and the next thing you know they lose the house and you've got a family of ogres in the tree and then 'poof', there goes the neighborhood.
We definitely don't want ogres in the tree.
