To celebrate the holidays we asked some of our favorite people in publishing what their favorite book was. Let us know in the comments what your favorite book is and be sure to check back throughout the week for more “favorites”.
Erin Cox, Book Publishing Director for The New Yorker, avid reader and lover of books.
Wow, to pick just one is actually quite hard. So, I’m going to actually list a few. Some old, some new.
Evidence of Things Unseen by Marianne Wiggins is a book that I’ve long mentioned I would like to read, but never actually had. One stormy afternoon this fall, I finished a book and thought, okay, now is the time. I started reading and didn’t look up until the room was so dark I couldn’t see anything. I spent the next two evenings ditching plans and reading into the night. I had to see what happened to Fos and Opal and Flash, the main characters of the book, who live in Tennessee post-World War I and are all enchanted by light in all its many forms. (more…)

Last night Daughter, Mother, the Webmeister and I attended the Awards ceremony for this year's JDRF walk. Our team, The A-mazings won raised almost $13,000 for this year's walk, and we won individual Golden Sneakers, a Platinum Team plaque and a Sapphire level Circle of Appreciation pin. But best of all....WE WON THE BEST T-SHIRT contest!!
Just as a reminder, here's what they looked like:
I was so proud that we won that because my daughter designed the shirts herself. Of course, I had to tell everyone at the surrounding tables this fact, to my daughter's extreme chagrin. Sheesh, what does the kid want from me? I can't help being proud!
Anyway, here's Daughter with her armful of awards:
And here's me after picking up my Golden Sneaker:
Can you see my extremely groovy necklace? My daughter made it for me for Chanukah. I love what it says: "Imagination is everything. It's the preview of life's coming attractions."
Ok, I'll stop bragging about my daughter now. Even if she is smart and funny and talented and creative and generally gorgeous.
And you thought you had a tough job?
Our daughter Niki works for the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) fighting fires. She works long hours-108 in the last week, averages 4-6 hours of sleep a night and sleeps in trucks or on the ground, and lives on military rations. She is lucky to get a day off, sometimes just a few hours before she is called to another fire.
Just recently, her crew was one of the first to respond to one of the biggest fires in Idaho/Utah since 1910 where over 562,000 acres burned. She's a strong, adventurous young woman, not afraid to get dirty and loves fighting fires. Niki is pictured on the far left below in the rose red dress. She's such a beautiful young woman with a personality to match. She's also in her second year of college. We're so proud of you and all that you've accomplished and we love you so much Niki! You go girl~!
Beautiful young lady and gorgeous dress!!!
Am I the only one that is concerned there is a raging fire behind them and they've stopped to take a photo?
:)
she deserves a medal!
Wow..without these pictures you would never know what our young women and men go through to keep us safe.
What an inspiration she is.
LOL, I'm laughing at Cheri's comment. We know a lot of young people who work on the fires here in the west. Living in the mountains, it becomes another regular summer routine. I love the photos of your daughter. In one she's a kicka** fire stomping woman and in the next she's a beautiful princess. Women are so versatile.
Wow! That is very impressive indeed. Not too many could that job. Very inspiring.
What a beautiful firefighter! Does she want to meet my son...???
She's gorgeous...I admire her! My son used to work for CDF here in CA fighting wildfires and it is not an easy job.
My hats off to her...
