1. SDCC’15: Aspen Comics Practice Santeria for Comic-Con

SDCC 2015 hasn’t been a slouch in the announcements department especially if you’re a fan of comics.  Friday morning, Aspen Comics held their Comic-Con caucus in room 9 kicking off with a big traditional “Aloha” and leading to a couple of big teases for fans.

Frank Mastromauro, Vince Hernandez, Mark Roslan, and Peter Steigerwald were joined by Josh Reed, Beth Sotelo, BigDog Ink’s Tom Hutchison, David Wohl, Paolo Pantalena, Siya Oum, V. Ken Marion, Heather Quinley, Alex Koant, and Hannibal Tabu. So many people that actually couldn’t fit on the stage.

Frank opened with the upcoming Eternal Soulfire showing off the Century Edition cover which was an SDCC exclusive. With Eternal Soulfire debuting this week more covers for issues three and four were shown off including a large piece separated into four different covers. The Vettix sketch cover initiative cover was talked about and their lineup for auction includes Art Adams with more names to follow soon. Vettix helps armed forces men and women attend hard to score events like comic-con.

The presentation transitioned into the recently launched Fathom Blue. One of the two Aspen team books set in the Fathom universe. Some scantily clad covers and regular covers for issue 2 through 5 were showing.

David Wohl talked about his new project called Santeria: City of Fear (working title). Wohl talked about wanting to do a paramedic story. It’s about a woman who saves someone’s live and in doing so is thrust into a world of Santeria. The pitch for the book sounds like an interesting take on what the cost of saving a life could be.

Oniba Swords of the Demon by Paolo Pantalena is a series featuring a female samurai. Her feudal Japan timeline story will see the heroine battle intricately designed monsters. There’s a sketchbook available at the Aspen booth featuring some intense line art.

The Big Dog Ink rundown started with an update on Critter. Some con exclusive covers were shown which should be available on the publisher’s online store. After Critter will be Legend of Oz Wicked West in October. Wrapping up the BDI stuff is a tease for new Shahrazad stuff next year.

Jirni Volume two debuts in August. Some new covers for the series were shown and Marion’s art really bumps up his game here.

The all ages Psycho Bonkers showed off some covers including one by MLP artist Agnes Garabowska.

LOLA XoXo Wasteland Madam had some new cover art to show off by the impressive Siya Oum. She’ll return to writing the LOLA series with Vol 2 whileWasteland Madam continues to be written by Vince Hernandez.

Steigerwald talked about the delay with Zoohunters. His current DC Commitments were taking more time than they should have but he’ll be returning to the book very soon.

Upcoming trades by the publisher include Fathom Vol 2, Fathom Killian’s tale, Legend of the Shadow Clan, and Jirni Vol 1.

Following the recent movement of Aspen Novels is Aspen Novellas. The first one in the line will feature the world of Executive Assistant Iris. They’ll be shorter than the novels but an expansion into the comics’ worlds that takes prose form.

Dellec and Shrugged will have new Volumes at some point. The stories for each are in the works but current titles are the focus. Mastromauro explained the publisher can only handle a certain number of books a month.

The Scourge,  Scott Lobdell’s previous Aspen series is in talks to be a feature film and has a screenwriter.

A gorgeous Michael Turner gallery edition collecting the legendary artist’s Batman/Superman run through the lens of the original pages is currently available at the show and at Graphitti Designs. The oversized book is a must for fans of Turner and orginal art which also contains tons of cover work and designs for his various DC Comics contributions. Fans can flip through one at the Graphitti booth, but be prepared for the best impulse buy ever.

The panel announced this year’s Halloween Fest book will be a Psycho Bonkers coloring and activity book for kids.

The publisher also announced a catch up with day-and-date digital as well as the back catalog continuing to update with Comixology.

For years Aspen has always had their IP on the cusp of breaking into other mediums, while there has been movement on a few things; according to Mastromauro the thing closest to being a reality is Executive Assistant: Iris. In the group’s opinion it’s the property that would be cost effective for a studio to tackle. Even teasing that it could be a SDCC 2016 announcement.

With that the panel closed with another rousing “Aloha!”

2. Critter Visits the Mona Lisa

Over the years, Critters have done there fair share of traveling. They've been as far north as Canada, as far south as the Caribbean,  as far west as California and as far east as Korea. These have all been very exciting places but I'm not sure I found any of theses places as exciting as the place I received today.

Critter visits the Mona Lisa!

I guess in the art world this might be as big as it gets. After all, the Mona Lisa is to art what Ke$ha is to music!

Lately, I've been really into the CrittaColor concept. I lik the interactivity and letting people help make he art, but i can't help feeling nostalgic about the old Critters after seeing this photo.

So here below are a few of the places "Old Critter" has been. if you'd like to follow any of the Critters, including the latest CrittaColor, check out Critters on Zonkey Street!

This little Critter traveld further than any other Critter. Here he is at he Biltmore Estates in NC.

Here he is again on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, CA.

In Seoul, South Korea.

Enjoying the weather on the sandy beaches of St. Johns.

The Infamous C-Word

1. In Sackcloth and Ashes. In the post on the C-word, I made two mistakes, for both of which I am sorry, though neither was due to chance. In Middle High German, the word klotze “vagina” existed, and I was going to write that, given such a noun, the verb klotzen “copulate” can also be reconstructed. Instead, I wrote that Modern German klotzen has such a meaning, though I knew only too well that klotzen means “puke, barf.” The modern verb seems to have a different origin; however, the available information is meager and not fully convincing. I also misspelled the name of the author in the picture. The illustration at the bottom of this post will reveal the full depth of my contrition.

2. Use and origin. One of our correspondents was told that in British English the C-word does not necessarily have offensive connotations when applied to women. This will be news to most of us. Perhaps the source of the information was the OED. In the past, c**t could indeed be used more freely. The same holds for the F-word (compare windfucker), but no conclusions follow for the present, as explained (quite correctly, to my mind) in a comment by another correspondent. The word was unprintable for a long time, and even now people usually avoid it. As for its origin, final -th in the protoform is impossible, for it would either have been preserved as -th or become d. Also, if the word had ended in -nth, the modern vowel would have been long, as in uncouth or in south. Like one of our correspondents, I also think that fuzzy-muzzy was coined on the analogy of fuzzy-wuzzy, alluding to pubic hair. Finally, beware of knowing little or no Italian. When English speakers, ignorant of the language, come to Italy and see some drink called caldo, they are surprised to get hot tea or hot coffee. I thought of this dilemma, while leafing through the old issues of the Italian journal Filologia antica e moderna in search of publications for my database. The title “Anatomia dell’eros ne Lo cunto de li cunti di Giambattista Basile” caught my fancy. The book by Basile is the famous Pentamerone, an early collection of Neapolitan fairy tales. It is known in English as The Tale of Tales, or Entertainment for Little Ones. Cunto (compare Modern Italian racconto and French conte) means “tale” in Basile’s seventeenth-century dialect. Quite a different word is the noun cunta “delay,” from Latin cuncta. Those who have read the history of the Second Punic War will remember Fabius Maximus, the cunctator (“delayer”). English dictionaries give the noun cunctation “delay,” a nice word to use in casual conversation. So much for cunto, cunta, and their English look-alike.

Engl. critter ~ Norwegian (Nynorsk) krøter. Mr. Jade Sandstedt pointed out this correspondence to me and asked how the two are connected. His question may affect the way the entry critter will be treated in our etymological dictionaries, assuming that they will ever deign to include such a word. One can sometimes read that critter is an Americanism traceable to creature. This is wrong on both counts, for the word is widespread in British dialects, but there it seems to be only or mainly a derogatory te

4. swell

Elliot may have been no taller than a juice box, but he sure could perform some swell rope tricks.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

The Illustration Friday theme for this week… for another 2.5 hours, is “swell”. So I thought it would be swell to post another snippet of the dummy I just completed just in time for the SCBWI L.A. Conference.

8. KIDLIT CRITTERPALOOZA!

 Critter lunching w/ Calgary Blueboarders
First off, I have to say what an honor it's been to host CRITTER here in my home in Calgary, Alberta, and on The Bookshelf Muse. CRITTER, for those of you just tuning in, is the art creation of Ian Sands and belongs to Christy Evers, who has sent him all over the world to visit KIDLIT writer/bloggers.

Critter's been on a road trip now for over 14 months, collecting the names of his hosts along the way, and will soon return to Christy's home in Morrisville, NC to be auctioned off as author memorabilia, with the proceeds going to St. Jude's.

As a MASCOT for the KIDLIT world, Critter has enjoyed the hospitality of our writing community, promoting creativity and raising awareness for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
Robert Bateman signs Critter, too!

You might have seen him at the LA SCBWI conference, crowd surfing at a rock concert, heading off to college, hanging out at Bluebeard's castle, being interviewed by the Texas Sweethearts, visiting the Gyeongbokgung Palace, or even meeting world renowned artist Robert Bateman. It's been quite the ride, and now Critter's ready to celebrate!

As his last stop here in Canada, it's up to me to send him off in style. And so, after we bought some new toques, ate some poutine and went moose-watching, we decided the best way to go out with a bang was by hosting a

9. Kidlit Critterpalooza!

For over a year now, CRITTER, the creation of artist Ian Sands, has been travelling the world, meeting many talented writers and authors and exploring where they live. At each stop he learns more and more about KIDLIT and the importance of literacy and creativity. This journey was the brainchild of Christy Evers, who got her hands on Critter after an interactive art project of Ian’s, where 500 Critters were hidden all over her city for people to find.

Critter has visited PJ Hoover (and the Texas Sweethearts!) in Texas, Beth Revis in North Carolina, Christina Farley in Korea, New England with Nandini Bajpai, Illinois with Kelly Polark, MG Higgins in California, Rena Jones in Montana, Cynthia Leitich Smith in Texas, Bish Denham in the Virgin Islands, 3 Comments on Kidlit Critterpalooza!, last added: 11/18/2010

10. Critter is FAMOUS!

We had another exciting few days with Critter. Because of all the amazing authors and writers Critter's met on his trip round the world, I knew Critter would absolutely love to meet world-famous naturalist artist, Robert Bateman.

So, when hubby and I went to a dinner event with him, of course Critter came along. Now I figured he might be a bit nervous meeting someone who is probably one of the most well-know artists of our time, but Critter played it cool. I guess he's used to artists, being the creation of Ian Sands and all.

Robert loved Critter's story about his trip around the world to promote creativity and raise money for charity. A strong environmentalist and philanthropist, he could see why Critter's mission was so important. Robert has his own mission, and will be soon opening the Robert Bateman Center for Art and Environmental Education, which will showcase art as a forum for raising awareness and increasing knowledge about environmental issues.

There was one moment when Critter squealed like a little girl...when Robert Bateman signed him, too! What an HONOR!

Naturally, after meeting such a passionate and giving personality, Critter wanted to do something good for others. He's hoping to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital soon when he's auctioned off to a new owner, but for now, he helped us put together a care package for an orphanage in Tanzania, Africa, which my family and I recently visited this summer.

After all that hard work, it was off to the Cheesecake Cafe to meet local Blue Boarders Kidlit writers (front, left to right) Brenda Johnson, Janet Gurtler, Linda Duddridge  and (back, left to right)
Deb Marshall, Leslie Carmichael & Stina Lindenblatt.

We talked shop, discussed books...and of course, ate some Rolo cheesecake. Another first for Critter!

It was a pretty busy couple of days. Now Critter's hard at work on a secret event called

12. Halloween, Critter Style

Let me tell you, having Critter around to celebrate Halloween was nothing short of EPIC. It all started when I found him trying to body surf across the candy bowl.

Well, the truth came out pretty quick: Critter has NEVER been trick-or-treating. Can you believe it?

So of course, I had to do something about it. And my kids. Together we dashed through the house, searching for suitable costumes. Hubby stood by and muttered something about us not being quite right in the head, but I'm sure I misheard.

There were some challenges. Like, erm, Critter's unique triangular shape.

First we went for the mummy look--we figured it would work awesome with his stiff walk. But after he was all good to go, my kids and I agreed...Critter looked too cute to be scary.

Maybe we were going about this all wrong! Critter's in Canada, after all, and so what's more Canadian than Hockey? So, we turned him into a Calgary Flame!

But as soon as Critter put on his jersey, he wanted to hit the ice, not go trick-or-treaking! And of course that would never do.

So, Darian, Jarod and I put our heads together and twisted our brains around the problem. Maybe we ate some candy. Okay, okay...a LOT of candy.

We wanted something unique. Something crazy. Something totally bizarre that only the Ackerman family would think of.

And then finally, WE HAD IT! The PERFECT costume, build for his shape, light weight and even better, something that comes straight from one of my books!

We turned Critter into a tree-shaped air freshener. Doesn't he look cute?

(So now you're wondering why I wrote a book about a tree-shaped air freshener, aren't you?)

Actually the book was about zombie janitors who wore air fresheners to keep them 'fresh'. Because you know, I'm weird like that.

13. Critter has made it to his last destination!

Critter has made it to Canada with Angela Ackerman over at The Bookshelf Muse. This is the grand finale of his world-wide tour before he is auctioned off for St. Jude. I understand that Angela has lots of fabu-tastic stuff in store for him. Why don't you go on over to to her blog and see how Critter adjusted to Canadian life in the Ackerman home. He's very sociable. He seems to make friends wherever he goes.

15. What is a Critter?!

Ian Sands seems like a very cool person. He makes public, interactive art in North Carolina. Like, his art is on the side of a bus. Or, you might be walking down near the water in and see this, that Ian made:

That would make me so happy. Someone did public art in the Huron River here in Ann Arbor, but it was all rusty wires and then it blew away in a tornado. Sad.

Anyway, Ian started a project called the Lost Critter project. He made a lot of Critters and then set them free...

Christy Evers is also a cool person. She writes books for kids. You may know her around Jacqui's Room as the eternally encouraging commenter C.R. Evers.

Now, somehow, Christy got a hold of a particularly cute Critter:

She is sending him all over the real world to visit children's writers. At the end of his travels, Christy is going to auction Critter off and donate the proceeds to charity (I told you she was nice).

And now, this week, Critter is in my house. I got him in a padded envelope along with the directions to "have fun" and a hint that Christy expected "mischief."

Mischief? Me? Stay tuned...

16. Working is in progress again

Remember when I was writing so hard that I had to stop blogging and write a poem about how hard I was writing?

This week, I don't even have time for a poem. It's good news: my agent loved all my new ideas and wants to see them all ASAHOIPOS.* And my agent is wise and I always do what she says. Also, she is a black belt and can beat me up. So no blogging for me for a few days.

That said, we have a visitor at our house this week. And, oh, the adventures we have had. Already, there has been dress-up and candy and a robot vs. objet d'art brawl.

Have you met Critter? You will...
