Here’s an recent car commercial for the Peugeot 208 by Partizan, where the car outperforms the cast of Wacky Races. While it’s kinda fun to see these characters and their outlandish vehicles being translated into live-action, it’s a bit horrifying seeing these real-life versions of the characters getting into this ultra-realistic crashes and fiery explosions. At least puppet Muttley made it through in one piece.

For comparison, here’s the opening to the original 1968 television series:
This morning my husband and I were watching Good Morning America, as we do every morning, when I suddenly decided to check out one of my pet peeves. Between 7:45AM and 7:55AM PST I counted 11 commercials, a segment of the show that was less than one minute long, and then 12 more commercials. Yes people, less than one minute of programming and 24 commercials in a ten minute period!!! It may have been even more, since they run together it is hard to count them. The greed is unbelievable. We are already paying for this programming because we receive it on satellite so why should we be subjected to this?
This is not an attack on Good Morning America, it is all of television broadcasting. Over time they have added more and more commercials to each program until we are now spending more time viewing commercials than we are viewing the program we tuned in to see. I wonder how many people agree that this is excessive? I am so angry that I am thinking of giving up television viewing entirely. It seems to me we are giving up a lot of time and money to be brainwashed by the advertisers who want us to give up even more of our money..
If we adults are being brainwashed by advertisers what about our children? How many ads are they seeing as they watch children's programming? Are they influencing your children or are you? Unfortunately I think the answer is obvious.
How do we combat this? I am open to suggestions. Do we quit watching television? Do we mute all commercials and leave the room? Do we sign a petition to put an end to this? Do we bombard the stations with letters and emails of complaint? Do we contact the FCC with our complaints? What do you think??? Your opinion is requested.

The mighty Buck creates a fantastic world made entirely of Sherwin Williams’s paint chips. Click on image to see the animated ad, or click here. They mention that this is the first in a series for the paint company. Looking forward to seeing the rest.
-albeit for different reasons. This series of atmospheric and mythical Thermasilk ads were done by the insanely talented French commercial director Bruno Aveillan. I have loved every thing I've seen him do. Such completely engrossing visuals - telling entire tales and building complex worlds in such a short period of time. Complete with super models...
This one feels like the visual love-child of Phantom of the Opera and Sweeney Todd:
Fairy tale..
Faery:
This is a low-res version, but his has always seemed like the *perfect* ad to me. Such great imagery, music and edited so tightly:
Here is a longer, higher res version of the same. Again, great visuals, but not as much punch as the shorter one:

Heh - I fell in love with this ad campaign when it first aired starting back in 2000-2001 I believe. I looked up the director back then - hoping that he was also directing fantasy/period movies, since these were so fabulous. (As far as I can tell, that is not the case - darn!) He does continue to direct breath-taking, award winning commercials - as I will demonstrate in a follow-up post.
These are wonderful! What a shame he isn't making movies. I especially like the firefly one! Thanks for sharing and giving me inspiration this morning. x
Thanks d.moll and Kim (I'm so happy to introduce you to the wackiness that is my world).
Hayden and Garden Ms. S - I know! I had to watch it about 10 times before I quit crying every time. (My daughter walked in on me during one of the early viewings and was appalled at my emotional display over a commercial!)
Nice mix of rotoscoping, 2D, and 3D animation for this Mountain Dew spot, titled History. Produced by Buck, with illustrator Josh Cochran creating the look and style frames.

Should be noted that Josh worked closely with Buck’s designers to create the look and style frames, specifically co-director Thomas Schmid who split the drawing tasks with Josh. It was very collaborative. full credits on Buck’s site: http://buck.tv/work/history
JUST saw this Public Service Announcement on television. Sponsored by the Ad Council for Fatherhood.gov Cheer, baby, cheer! I am enchanted. Great commercial. Good job, guys. Let's get R-O-W-D-Y!

Seriously, I have no problem with a Pogues song being used for a commercial. But, it just seems very strange that Sunny Side of the Street is being used to sell Cadillacs. (It's the one called "Morning Ritual"). I really admire the person who thought of this and convinced the company to produce it, because it's just so bizarre. In case you're having time understanding Shane MacGowan's singing, the lyrics are here.
One of my favorite events is when a song I like is used in a TV commercial or on a TV show. It's especially great when it's not a common song, or when I discover a new musician thanks to the exposure. In my opinion, one of the best things The O.C., and the shows that has followed in its wake, has done is drawn attention to the importance of music. Now, any indie artist knows there's a shot at getting lots of exposure for their music via television.
There's a lot of sites that help you figure out the songs used in commercials, like What's That Called and Songtitle.Info. There's even a site for UK commercials, Commercial Breaks and Beats. But in my admittedly-not-exhaustive search, I only came across one website that talked about music on TV shows: Tunefind.
Do you know of sites that help identify music on TV? I'd love to know about them! I hope these sites help with patrons who are curious about the music on their TV.
And in case you were wondering: five of my favorite 'featured on TV' songs.
1. "Such Great Heights" performed by Iron & Wine, featured in M&Ms commercial Kaleidoscope. 2. "Ashes" performed by Embrace, featured in Veronica Mars episode 2x01, Normal is the Watchword. (YouTube link) 3. "Stay" performed by Michelle Featherstone, featured in Alias episode 2x04, Dead Drop. (YouTube link) [Michelle, on her website, talks about how TV was so critical to her music career] 4. "Catch My Disease" performed by Ben Lee, featured in a Dell commercial. 5. "I Feel Pretty" from West Side Story, featured in Nike Woman commercial I Feel Pretty.

Thanks for the links, those are great sites. My favorite is Of Montreal's song Wraith Pinned to the Mist used during an Outback Steakhouse commercial. Even though I am rather upset they changed the lyrics...
FANTÁSTICO!!!
That was beautiful. Wonderful use of 3d… color is one of things that seems often overlooked or at least not looked at hard enough in 3d.
dude thats awesome !
That is all kinds of win! Now this is advertising, i would actually use this company if it were in Australia.
I needed that this morning…sometimes I forget there are very clever, optimistic people out there with a TON of talent….thanks.
