2. Illustration Friday: "stitch"

My submission for Illustration Friday's "stitch" is one of the little closets I made for the owners of Fred Segal Fun. I used wood, foamcore, wood dowels, acrylic paint and resin for the body of the closets. I made little dresses that I stitched by hand, little felt purses and wraps that I embroidered, hats and shoeboxes made from stonehenge paper, hangers made from floral wire and a cat made from clay. I love to sew and would like to make time to stitch up a few more things.

3. SCHOOL BANS HOODED SWEATSHIRT

NOTE TO SELF: EDUCATORS SHOULD STICK TO...EDUCATION

Here we go again. There used to be a time when schools and educators relegated themselves to expanding student's knowledge. It appears that they're also getting involved in fashion choices.

School officials at Lincoln Middle School in Meridien, Conn. have banned hooded sweatshirts, citing that they violate the dress code policy. While the district's Board of Education dress code policy does not specifically ban this piece of clothing, it does now allow head gear, which presumably includes sweat shirt hoods.

"The hooded sweaters, and some of the hooded shirts that are out, all those are excluded. If you're in the stores shopping, that's all there is -- everything is hooded," said parent Cheryl Tomassetti.

School officials said they decided to ban the shirts after some students were spotted wearing hoods over their heads in school hallways and classrooms. Officials said that hoods are sometimes used by students hiding headphones.

Makes a person wonder how far the arm of educators should extend, especially when it comes to the choice of clothing. If it was for safety purposes officials would be justified but headphones?

The ban will go into effect after winter break.

4. Nothing to Wear!

Tomorrow night I'm attending a gala event at the Loft Literary Center. It's a tribute dinner to the exiting director of the Loft.

I'm not normally a gala kind of person. They intimidate me. But former Poet Laureate Billy Collins is one of the folks paying tribute, and so I'm plunking down $100 to go to this.

Problem: I have no idea what to wear. Someone who works at the Loft told me most people would not be black tie. The Loft is a very casual environment, most of the time, and so are its students and instructors.

But Billy Collins.

But $100.

But...help!

I have about 30 minutes to run into a department store today and maybe an hour tomorrow to grab something. But what to grab? No idea.

I have a soft, black, swirly skirt, like the kind you'd wear for ballroom dancing (not that I can ballroom dance!). So I could buy some kind of pretty top to go with it.

Or are all these too plain and I need something sparkly/glittery (not my general style!)?

Or should I get a dress instead?

Would something like this with a pair of black heels be dressy enough?

And we won't even go into a purse. Geez. I have no dressy wardrobe whatsoever.

Any reactions/ideas?

I don't want to show up looking completely overdressed. I'd rather be a little underdressed. But I don't want to stick out.

Honestly, I feel like I'm back in 8th grade. But since I'll be meeting lots of other writers, I'm considering this a semi-writing decision. So I figured it was only semi-pathetic to ask y'all for advice.

Right? Right?...

I've decided to take a break from the Game Industry and try it as a freelance Illustrator. I felt that if I was to continue with games I would not have any time for my drawing... I have some plans for a book, I'll probably show some of it on the blog. Have nice weekends everybody

Unfortunately, these clothes are not in the budget for most librarians...or writers. But it's good to know the elite college kids of the world will be thinking of us as they wear them. :)

And here I was, so excited over all the catalog photography with stacks of books and in libraries and stuff that I forgot to actually look at the clothes!

And I don't wear quiet shoes. Most of the library is carpeted and on the stuff that isn't? My heels have that "teacher click" that I always associate with authority...

Word to what Camille said. When I was the librarian at TSD in Knoxville, one of the teachers referred to my cardigan as part of my "uniform," since I wore it almost daily . . .

Mattias those look stunning! I agree with the other comments that your shirts could become very popular if you decided to sell them.

Actually, I'm asked to do t-shirt designs too. Never had one of my illustrations printed on a shirt. I work with pen & ink, just like you and I was told that this could be very difficult because of the detail. Transfers like 'flock' were impossible with fine lines I was told. But now I see your shirts and it works great! Could you tell a bit more about the technique you used?

självklart ska du sälja t-shirts med dina egna illustrationer. dom skulle sälja som smör i solsken.

du skulle dessutom kunna sälja: vykort, väggkalendrar, dagbokskalendrar (som filofaxer typ med spiralrygg eller så), miljökassar i tyg, "iron-on-stickers" (så man kan stryka på en av dina illustrationer på t ex en fläck på ett plagg som inte går bort), osv. det finns nog en oändlig massa områden du skulle kunna sälja.
jag skulle definitivt vara en storkund!

funderade igår lite på hur du skulle teckna en fotograf med kamera...hur det skulle se ut rent visuellt och hur du skulle bygga en story kring det. men det är kanske inte alls något du har funderat över. och man kan ju säkert inte önska heller... ;)
men ja, det vore himla kul om du får brist på idéer...vilket du i och för sig inte verkar få.

I don't know if you could sell them through CafePress (http://www.cafepress.com/). I'm not sure that site is available outside America, or what the quality of the shirts would be like, but it might be worth checking out. I'm sure there are other sites elsewhere.
