2. Illustration Friday ~ Stripes

...for this week's Illustration Friday

This is one of my illustrations from the NEW book How Haitians Play Basketball, written by Travis Mushet , published by TorchRunner Press for Blaze Sports.

How Haitians PlayBasketball introduces us to Milekson, a boy with a different walk and a love for basketball. When an earthquake strikes Milekson's home on the island country of Haiti, his life and the lives of his friends and family are changed in big ways. This book, the second in the BlazeSports Children's Series from TorchRunner Press, is a great way to tactfully teach your child about the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the abilities of people with disabilities, and the triumph of the human spirit. How Haitians Play Basketball makes a perfect addition to your school or public library, and a great gift for children both with and without disabilities.

4. How Haitians Play Basketball

(click book to enlarge)
It's been awhile since I've updated the blog here... I've been so busy cranking out illustrations that I've lost track of all time. My newest illustrated venture is How Haitians Play Basketball (TorchRunner Press) written by Travis Mushett, illustrated by me. This book was published for BlazeSports whose mission is to improve the lives of children and adults with physical disabilities worldwide through sport, healthy lifestyles, the prevention of chronic illness, sport diplomacy, and human rights. I worked with a fabulous team on this book and I'm very proud of it. I can't wait to to share this story with you! The release date is scheduled for mid-September, so stay tuned for more updates on this project. I'll be able to tell you when and where to get your copy! It's a wonderful story and your money will go to a most deserving cause.

5. Milford Memories / ArtQwerks 2011 Booth Share competition WINNERS!!!

Thank you for all that entered the Milford Memories / ArtQwerks 2011 Booth Share competition. I am so excited that the Chamber gave me the opportunity to donate my booth to fellow VFAA and HVCA members I care so much about. I received the decision from the Huron Valley Chamber of Commerce and they have chosen the following artists from the entries that were submitted.

...and Milford Memories / ArtQwerks Booth winners (and a little sampling of their art) are :

April Schwaegerle / Jewelry

Mary Bajcz / Fiber Arts

Janice Dumas / Watercolors

Their booth, filled with all sorts of gorgeous goodies by all three artists, will be set up in front of Main Street Art (see Janice's Painting above) for the fun filled weekend of Milford Memories Summer Festivals 20th Anniversary 2011 celebration, August 12th, 13th and 14th!

Three very well deserved winners! Congratulations to them all!

Finally! A blog entry...
I have been (and still am) working very hard on the illustrations for a children's book with the wonderful people at BlazeSports of Atlanta GA. Keeping a balance of work, exhibiting and making time to enjoy the pleasures of warm weather has been exciting and I've loved every minute of it, but as I begin another entry for Illustration Friday here, I realize it's been a MONTH since I've made any sort of entry at all...That's a first...I'm a big talker Betty Crocker...I blame spring.
It's so much easier during the winter months to hibernate, work, work, work and look at the beauty of the snowy landscape from the windows of my studio. It's a challenge in the spring however, to stick to my well planned schedule when sensory overload is so prevalent. The smell of fresh cut grass, the sound of pond waterfalls, my sweet horses nickering, the call of the sandhill cranes and hypnosis of the swimming pool sparkle on a sunshiney day, fill my imagination with all that lies ahead through the glorious summer months. These are the breathtaking touches of spring and summer that make time so enjoyable to spend in the outdoor warmth and gorgeousness with friends and family. I plan to soak it all in and enjoy it one moment at a time...

8. The Making of a Picture Book 4

Don’t Forget the Text

Though I can’t show you the text I can show you were it is going to go. One of the tricks in illustrating a picture book is the leave space for the text without leaving a gaping whole in your illustration.

Spread 6

When I plan out an story illustration I always have a layer with the text on it in the size the publisher has said it will be. This way I don’t have to guess and hope it will fit in the end. This also goes for book covers. Where the text is going to appear you also want the colors to be low contrastThis means that the value of the colors in a particular area are relatively the same value so either dark with light text or vice versa.

Zooming in for Effect

When illustrating a picture book you don’t always have to have crazy angles for every shot. Take a queue from the film industry and go in for some close ups. If your working on a computer you don’t even have to re-sketch your scene just use a free-transform tool to expand your image. I wouldn’t advise doing this with a painted image in most cases because of pixelationPixelation is when you blow up or expand an image and the pixels, the bits of color information that make up your image, become jagged and much more visible..

Spread 5

Digital Tool Tip

When using the free-transform tool in Painter or Photoshop remember to hold down shift while moving the arrows on the box the tool creates. This will ensure your image scales proportionally.

Free-transform tool in action

This concludes the fourth segment of The Making of a Picture Book. Thank you for joining me on this journey and I hope you will join me again for further installments.

15. Got Milk?

Alrighty then...I'm going to milk this holiday market until the cows come home and since the only animals living here are horses, dogs, one fish and an occasional mouse in the barn, that's going to be a very long time...at least until the holidays are over. The Holiday Art Market contains an array of many beautiful paintings, fiber art (wearable and to drool overable) and other amazing works from the artists that were exhibiting at the HVCA Arts and Greens the weekend before Thanksgiving. See their new stuff too! They have all come together under one warm and toasty roof at the HVCA Gallery in Highland MI. Come join us on Sunday, December 6th for the official opening of the market and meet the artists, listen to great music and Heiner Hertling read his illustrated children's book, A Pirates Quest, a delightful gorgeously illustrated gift for any child (or adult, I bought mine when it first came out last year), watch artists demonstrate their talents and shop while you nosh on snicky snacks. You can peruse the HVCA Art Shop Gallery too while your there! So come and get started, continue or finish up your holiday shopping here, where you will find fantastic unique and beautifully crafted art gifts for everyone at every age on your list! The HVCA Holiday Art Market is open December 1st through the 24th.

...oh yeah, I'll be there too!

16. ArtRage

This is a little sketch done from Art Rage , a little paint program you might enjoy yourself. I think I've found a new addiction. I actually did this for the week Illustrations Friday's word was "skinny" about two weeks ago and I didn't get around to posting, but hey... there's only so much time in a day. It's that time of year when I need to rearrange the studio so I can get the rest of my work done and find a place to organize all the stuff I drug out to the last show this past weekend. I'll post some pictures of that too, eventually.
