I have been making 'finished' pencil sketches for weeks now and today, I will start painting my book, Would You Rather Be A Princess or a Dragon? (Tricycle press)
When I first sent this book around, publishers loved the story but were not interested in me illustrating the book. I sold the manuscript and 'then' showed them my drawings. My editor wanted me to illustrate the book. Looking at the dummy, I realized why other editors wanted someone else for the artwork. It took months or 're-thinking' what I had originally drawn. I am so grateful I had the time to push this book.
I will post some things along the way.
Adios.
Here's a 'test' illustration...

My web guys figured out how to keep the blog here and have it show up on my website... so much for moving.
Beyond that, this new year brings new thoughts about publishing. I'm anticipating some sort of Kiddie Kindle around the corner. Most likely from Apple. I feel like publishers have slowed down as far as making commitments for a lot of new books. Yes, books are being published, but from my own experience and a few authors I have spoken with, none of us are having new titles swooped up in the way that they had been over the years.
Is this like being a blacksmith who made a living putting horse shoes on horses while the automobile business was taking hold? What types of book will be translated into a digital format? Which books will stay in their 'booky' form and still sell?
These are some of the questions that keep me up at night and seep in my brain during the day. That said, I am still working on new books and I need to go back to work and write. (For whichever format it appears on down the line!)
Adios for now.
Barney
It would be interesting to see the drawings you sent out originally that you later had to "re-think", even though I understand they are not your "best' work.
Good idea! I will put some up! Thanks for the thought!!!
