IN THE RAIN WITH BABY DUCK

 Written by Amy Heist

Illustrated by Jill Barton

Candlewick Books, 1995

ISBN1-56402-532-2

Pit-pat! Pit-a-pat! Imagine that imagine you’re a duck. Your mom and dad love walking in the rain. So do your grandparents. Ducks love the water, right? Well, not Baby Duck. Baby Duck hates the rain.

IN THE RAIN WITH BABY DUCK is a delightful and easy read. This colorful picture book has great action verbs that move the plot along. Baby Duck and her family prance, dally, and mutter. Simple sentence structures and larger text make this a story that can and will be read over and over again.

Grandpa Duck share a secret with Baby Duck, and she discovers that things are not always what they seem to be. Kids from four to eight years of age will identify with Baby Duck as she discovered that her mama didn’t always love the rain either. They will smile as they read about the special relationship between Grandpa Duck and Baby Duck. Grandparents will love this book as well as they cuddle up with a special child.

Done in a combination of watercolors and colored pencils, the pouting facial expressions drawn by illustrator Jill Barton on Baby Duck’s face could easily be found on a human child. They are exactly what they would be if a child was asked to do something that they don’t want to do.

Read it to your child and find out together how something that Baby Duck’s dislikes become her most favorite thing as the two come up with a solution of Baby Duck’s problem.
