I loved Electric Company, too. I especially liked when there were two silhouettes of people and they each would say a part of a word. I remember that vividly!

I also loved Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood (especially the part with the puppets) and Sesame Street, and Zoom!!

Funny thing - - as a kid I loved Zoom. Now as an adult, one of my husbands' oldest friends is Neal from Zoom!! Funny.

I also have to cop to loving Blue's Clues. (I used to watch it with the original Steve about 10 years ago, but have not watched in a long time.)

Oh....Mr. Rogers...he was wonderful. I loved the puppets, too. But I think I liked Captain Kangaroo even more. His voice was so soothing, and he had such great stuff in his BIG pockets....like carrots! Who didn't like Mr. Greenjeans?

Yes, that was one of my favorite parts of Electric Cpmany, too, and also when Rita Moreno would yell "Hey you guuuuyyyyyyssss!!!"

I used to love Electric Company too! I remeber a sketch with Morgan Freeman like if it was today. The song was:

Growing up in Chicago, I lived for The Bozo Show. Around '78 or '79 my aunt scored tickets (it was like trying to get tix for Oprah now) and we went to see it live. Does anyone remember Bozo? Man, Larry Harmon was great as Bozo. Cookie was awesome.

Kate: Captain Kangaroo was the best. My brother and sister thought he was boring, but I loved him. Remember Bill Cosby's Picture Pages?

I also remember watching The Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka every year. The whole family would get together for it, eat snacks...get scared by Oompa Loompas. So weird that we can watch it anytime we want now. Not the same.

Speaking of Blue's Clues, I used to work on that show. One of the best things about it was story meetings. We all had some great conversations about the shows we loved as kids, and I think we put a lot of that into B.C. I guess being glued to the TV as a kid pays off. ;)

This is a wonderful trip down memory lane Kate! I loved Electric Company! I recall the two silhouettes on either side of the screen would alternately say, "fffff" .... "ast" and simultaneously say, "fast!" "ffff" "ish" ... "fish"! That was my favorite! I was a budding nerd!

Alicia: No, I do not remember that. I think everybody loved that show, though. It was actually kind of progressive for its time, if you think about it....the show featured a lot of minorities, 2 of which we still know very well today as respected actors. Same with Sesame Street. I think there were a lot of white kids introduced to cultural diversity back then and learning Spanish (at least counting and a few choice vocabulary words). That is one thing I actually liked about those shows and others on PBS. I actually had a HUGE crush on Gordon from Sesame Street.

Sparky: Hey, nice to see you back here! Yes, i actually grew up in Peoria, IL, but we got Chicago channels and I watched Ray Rayner while getting reeady for school in the morning and Bozo. Bozo was HUGE!

Cool story abourt Blues Clues! I actually did a lot of work with the "Barney" people as one of my first studio jobs out of school. They were nuts. : )

Get Zapped: Yes, of course, everyone watched The Brady Bunch, Jackson 5 and Partridge Family....now you have me thinking of shows like Love American Style (LOL), The Donny & Marie Show, Love Boat and Fantasy Island! Ha! I know it is beginning to sound like I watched a lot of TV. I didn't, actually, but I do remember all of these! Too funny. It would be hilarious to see reruns of all of those shows.

i miss huckleberry hound and quick draw mcgraw.

i remember when i was a little girl, my father was stationed at Misawa Air Base in the north of Honshuu Island in Japan. We used to watch the Lone Ranger on TV there...but i'd swear were were hearing the dialogue on our radio...armed forces radio...

Kate, your drawing is wonderful. You're a natural born artist! The shows that meant a lot to me growing up were Captain Kangaroo, and Mr. Greenjeans too, and of course Tom Terrific and Phoebe the Wonder Dog! Remember them? And I was always late for school because I couldn't pull myself away from The 3 Stooges!I also loved Fractured Fairy Tales on the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show. And remember Mr. Peabody and Sherman? Wow, you've really got me going down memory lane here. Oh....and I was on Romper Room! (Yikes!!) And there was also Major Mudd (in Boston) and Rex Trailer, and I loved Bozo too. And here I thought my childhood was deprived :)

I especially enjoyed a show called "3-2-1 Contact" which had lots of cool segments on nature and science experiments, etc. They also had a "drama" segment called "The Bloodhound Gang" which featured adolescent detectives solving mysteries via the use of invisible ink and other such phenomena fascinating to a 7 year old girl. Electric Company isn't ringing any bells for me....maybe it wasn't shown in Australia. My age is showing here but I remember loving Andy Pandy and The Flower Pot Men when I was little. When I was a bit older, I loved the World of Disney which was a different show each week, The Brady Bunch, Flintstones, The Jetsons and Astro Boy were favourites too. My kids loved Romper Room and Sesame Street when they were little.

OH, I just remembered another TV show I loved....The Munsters!

Kate, when my nephew was a baby, my sister would sing him to sleep every night with "Puff, the Magic Dragon." I've always loved the song.

As an adult I grew to love Sesame Street, and the Muppet Movie soundtrack is still one of my favorites. As a kid it was Captain Kangaroo, and a local tv show in South Louisiana named Polycarp, this old cajun man in a cabin who used to have a barrel, and when he took the lid off it this crazy music would play. We never knew what was inside. :-)

Captain Kangaroo! My brother and I watched him every day! At night I watched Jackie Gleason and I wanted him to be my dad. That cracks me up! How sweet it is...

This is so awesome Kate. Yeah, I know what you're saying. The Electric Company and Sesame, Mr. Rodgers and Zoom Zoom--I grew up on all of that stuff. I read a repot recently that the classic Sesame episodes were deemed too "scary" for today's kids, yet look at what's on during the day, and the video games they play! Some bs about Oscar being too "depressed", etc, etc. What?!? Anyhow, Great post here. I actually look forward to getting all nostalgic and getting those old Sesame dvds soon, and speaking of Burl Ives, I watch the original animated (stop motion) Rudoulph around Christmas every year, on dvd. It still blows everything else away in my opinion.

Those drawings are great. The teeth are impressive in magnitude and frequency. I love looking at my 2 year olds drawings, there is something great about drawings that are non representitive; drawings for drawings sake.

I find this story very interesting. Its amazing how kids can really tell whats happening through art. How nice that you have your artwork from when you were little. My mom didn't keep anything :o( I ,on the other hand ,have no space too keep my kids art anymore :o)

Even as a child, you were able to capture the sense of movement, especially in that running bird! My favorite parts: the smile on the person up the tree, the eyelashes on the shark, the interesting legs on the dinosaur, and the sun's rays. :) Thanks, these made me smile.

This makes me wish all the more that I'd kept art stuff from my childhood too. I love looking through my own kids' art from when they were little.

I love the one of the dinosaur chasing the person up a tree. Your mention of Hilda brought back the childhood memory of a dachshund that lived a few doors down from us and it hated kids too. I remember we would try to sneak past their house but, if the dachshund noticed us, the race was on to the end of the street with the dachshund in fast pursuit, making threatening growling noises all the way. It was quite terrifying for us as kids but we laugh about it now. Wonderful drawings, Kate, thanks for sharing them with us. :)

Thanks, Kate, for your kind comments regarding my father. I noticed you're a chiropractic assistant. I'm studying myofascial release trigger point therapy. Wow, it does wonders for headaches, and other pains. I may not have go to back to my chiropractor again to have my neck put back in. Since I started working on myself, my headaches are gone. No more Tylenol.

The food scene in Chicago is much more daring and experimental than here in Seattle, but Seattle seems to have a great focus on freshness and easy access to great seafood and produce as well as plenty of ethnic diversity, at least in the Asian spectrum, which I love. Take care!

Aaah! but, it also feels that way in an agency. The big fish is the dumb boss who got all his promotions by kissing booty... and if you don't return the favor in kind, he'll eat you up and spit you out. The grass is always greener... :)

Yes, I know....greener grass. Really, I consider myself fortunate that I really am doing what I love to do for a living. But with all of the insane outsourcing this country now does, it is so much harder to live as a freelancer here. And it takes a certain personality type....I would not recommend it for most people because you have to be content living always within your means and a fluctuating yearly income and there is absolutely NO job security, but...I LOVE IT! There are things I wish I had....paid vacations (I have had one "vacation" in 18 years, and that was in 2000 with a friend who had an extra ticket) and my lousy health insurance is atrocious and I use coupons for everything and buy my clothes at discount stores....or I go without. But you know what? It still beats going to an office and trying to fit where I don't fit, hating my boss, and having no sense of satisfaction in my work. There is no ideal job out there. But I do think it is important to be as happy as you can in your job.

Oh, and I just wish my clients would PAY ME ON TIME!!!

I love to see childhood drawings... and then when I see the work you do today, it's great to see how much one grows with time and practice and hard work. You are an amazing artist, and brave too, for I am sure it is tough to be a freelance artist, but you are also quite an inspiration!

Did you ever see Finding Nemo--the part at the end, when the credits are scrolling down, and the little fish pulls a big, surprise chomp on the much larger fish? That's how I'd love to be able to approach my rent and expenses, and every time I try, some new expense seems to magically appear. Such is life I guess, and I wish you the best! I love this drawing. Children's drawings are so free of everything we 'learn' in later years.

Moving is quite an adventure. I have moved a lot before coming to this apartment, where I stayed three years, the longest time in one place since I moved out of my childhood home. Vincent and I shared some happy and some difficult moments here, so it's a little bit sad to leave the place.
But we are moving to the country in the south-east of France. My father bought a winery there and Vincent is going to take care of it. So we are really excited about that. But it also seems absolutely unreal. In two weeks time we will change life completely. I still can't imagine the moment when we will actually arrive there.

I hope you are doing fine. When is your teaching job going to start ?

Yep, lots of big fish in my life too, taking a bite out of my bank account without enough to go around. I feel your pain about freelancing, and agree with you that it beats working for someone in an office that I'd feel like running out of. I need fresh air and freedom. Now the money part...ugh. That's tough. One week I made $2.50 because I sold one lousy card!!

I hear that...my Dad worked all the time too. I think now how my husband is so available to our daughter and I'm so grateful. Mitch Albom wrote a new book something like Lunch with Mom about conversations with his dead mother. It's a good one.

Thank you Janice. I am always interested in that sort of thing. I will get the change to see children grow and develop artistc skills when I begin teaching all levels in the upcoming school year. I hope to start a blog to share their work and some of my observations. Even though I will be their teacher, I think I will be the one learning the most!

WOW! I've seen many 3 year old drawings and they were nothing as good as this! I love all of the colors you used for the texture on the turtle shell. This piece just shows that you were born to be an artist. :-)

Thanks you two. I am amazed sometimes when I look back at these drawings from my childhood. They help me to remember now to think outside the box! Turtles don't have to be green and brown. : )
